I will keep that in mind. Thank you. 19CannyMum: |
I had my first (static) electric shock while touching a car door. I have been warned door knobs shock also. I haven't read anyone talking about this. How do you all cope with this? |
Landing gist! I got to MMA 6ish, quite early for an 11pm flight, but that was because I wanted my family to get back home in good time. Check-in had not started so I had to wait for about 20mins. Now, get this about me, I hate stress particularly while travelling(I travel a lot lol). The only food items I had were peanuts, indomie(onion) and maggi and I was ready to drop them if need be. Immediately my bags went through, those hyenas pretending to be customs officials called me and wanted to check my bags with their dirty hands(yeah, I don't like those people). I told them what I had and they started telling me about getting some certificate and I knew they were just about money. I guessed they sensed my nonchalance and told me to go. I flew BA. One bag was overweight by 1kg, while the other bag(although full) was about 18kg. The lady said maybe i should move some things to my hand luggage(yeah BA allows your hand luggage and personal item to weigh up to 23kg, if you can lift it in yourself of course). So i just moved some clothes into the hand luggage. Went through immigration and they were quite friendly. I didn't really travel with cash(had about 100pounds and few dollar bills. I had my settlement fees in my dollar card. Boarded without any hassles. I hated the food(bland jollof, the disrespect lol). Oh yes, I had a long layover in London(almost 9 hours). I booked my ticket like that on purpose so I could sleep, eat and take a bath at the lounge. Honestly, long haul flights wear me out and I needed that break. Got to Heathrow around 5am and got enough rest in time for my 1.25pm flight straight to Calgary. Flight to Calgary was smooth. The food was good especially the mashed potatoes. Got to YYC, I didn't need the personal effects list and I had no goods to follow. I was directed to the office with a big E. I got there and I wasn't asked any other question apart from those questions on my COPR. No question about funds or anything else. I declared my food items and wasn't checked or anything. I got out and my sibling and family were waiting for me. Yeah, Canada definitely has a lot of empty land space than the US. It wasn't cold at all when I got here( had on a turtleneck with no jacket and was fine). I went to Nandos with my family and it was really good. So YYC doesn't have Service Canada, so I went downtown the next day. I feel confident about driving soon because I had been driving in the US. Got my SIN, opened an account with Scotia and got a Chatr line. I had initially gone to request for a healthcard, but the guy said I needed a proof of address(phone bill, copy of lease, mailed bank statement etc). I went to get a phone line and requested a printed phone bill with address and all to suffice for proof of address. I went back to get my healthcard and the Asian guy said he wouldn't accept it. Now I am a kind of person that believes even a fellow Nigerian can be a dirtbag to me and it's usually not about race but that human beings can be dirtbags regardless of race. Now my sibling had had an encounter with this same guy when trying get an Albertan license and also noticed the Asian guy's attitude. Anyway, my sibling drove me to another place and this same utility bill was accepted without any question. My sibling wanted us to go back and demand from him and probably a superior officer why the same utility bill that was rejected by him was accepted at some other place. I was not that bothered by it so, we went to get ribs(yummy). It's snowing but still not that cold for me, so I am settling in nicely. One other thing, I noticed the aging population thing almost immediately. So many old people at the mall. So my wakabout continues today. I loved reading other people's landing gist, so there goes mine. May Canada favour us all. |
It's ppr people. Here's my timeline: IELTS Feb 2018: LRSW 8.5, 7.5, 8, 7.5 CRS:450 ITA: March 26 AOR: May 6 MEP/1P1: May 16 FTD TO ACCRA: May 24 ADR: January 2019 (birth cert, salary account and family form) PPR: February 4 I honestly couldn't have done it without this thread. I learnt a lot. Major thanks to the elders of this thread. Their stories were truly inspiring. I wish you all the best in whatever stage you are in this journey. Cheers! |
Oyinbo po!(in Jenifa's voice) I was not surprised you aced your IELTS both times. Your writing scores are especially impressive. Congrats to you and your family. May Canada favour you. BoboXIV: |
Nigerian doctors are bad, yet they thrive abroad. Whose fault is it when a woman in labor has to bring generator to a government hospital? It goes on and on and no I’m not a doctor. |
Okay, thank you. smslive2: |
@smslive2 Please can you put up the list of the people who have got ppr on this thread on page 1? |
Exactly! oskaroni: |
Let me try to help with the knowledge I have. So I applied to the University of Alberta and got admission this year. I graduated with a cgpa of 3.85/5. When my cgpa was calculated on their portal, it was converted to 3.33/4 for admission purposes. From this and having applied successfully to two other schools, I believe that for a typical Nigerian school(at least the uni i attended, which is Babcock University) that operates a 5point cgpa grading system, 3.5/5 which is where 2nd class upper starts from is the equivalent of 3/4, which is the same as a B average Canadian standard(at least for the University of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan). 4/5 Nigerian cgpa is 3.5/4 Canadian and also a B+ average, while 4.5/5 is the equivalent of 3.75/4 and an A- and on it goes. oskaroni: |
It was sent there on May 24, about 10 days after MEP. Estac: |
My dear, just relax and be sipping tea like me. That office is very slow. My AOR is May. I have requested GCMS notes twice and can see that no activity whatsoever has taken place since it was transferred to the office about three months ago. I mailed the office and they responded that my application is waiting in queue and applications will be treated in sequence. Jocanada: |
I couldn't agree more. I wrote IELTS in Nigeria in October 2017(Academic) and in February 2018(General) and I got 7.5 in writing both times. I think the problem might be that Nigerian markers may be more rigid about a particular style of writing and look out for some PARTICULAR things. I think we should be trying to figure out these things after all, some people still get no change in marking after EOR. sleekchic: |

I don't agree. I saw the examiner grade me, as I got up from the chair after my speaking test. He wrote down 8.5 and that's exactly what I got when the result came out. Elfmannisback: |

I hated the movie! Don't have high expectations. I was surprised to see it win so many awards. Well, try watching and see! armadeo: |
I paid 28k for a new license. The incompetent official that did my capture seemed more interested in my address and relationship status than any other thing. Eventually, he made a mistake and the temporary one issued had motorcycle on it instead of private. He then told me that it can't be changed because it had been sent and that I will have to wait till the permanent one is issued, then it can be sent back to be corrected. This means I have to wait for a very long time. I can't wait to leave this country. |

I used the Cambridge materials downloaded from links on this forum. I also used ieltsliz. Two major things I learnt from ieltsliz are 1.) For the listening test, if you practice very well with past questions, you will be able to predict most answers. Even if you don't hear the answer as soon as it's played, you should be able to summarize the information in your head in order to answer the questions. At least, that worked for me. Also, one major area that makes a lot of people flop is the map labelling, which is about 5 questions. It's very hard for most Nigerians because maps are not exactly common in Nigeria. 2.) For speaking, you don't have to follow the cue card to the letter. You are not marked on task completion for the speaking test. Worry more about being able to speak fluently at length than any other thing. To conclude, practice a lot. dokxavi: |
Hello house! First of all, I'm thrilled to have aced my IELTS at the first attempt. I hope my fellow February 10 candidates got the required scores as well? Anyway, I have this information for those who are using WES to assess their credentials from Babcock University. I'm sure someone will find this useful. So, after WES sent my transcript for verification, I kept waiting and eventually had to go to Babcock to track its progress. Babcock uses a body known as ETX for the verification process. At the registry, the lady there checked for the verification mail for my transcript and sent it to ETX, then put me in contact with the ETX people. I was then required to send my email address and got an invoice to pay 2000 into their GTB account. I got an email 2 days later that the verification had been completed. I had to wait for about 5 working days for it to reflect on WES. Ready to dive into the pool!!! ![]() |
Hello house, please anyone who graduated from Babcock University here? How long did the verification take? My IELTS speaking is tomorrow. Wish me luck. |
Why do people see aging as an insult? I tire! It's a privilege to grow old. Smh! |
Thank you all for the advice. I will have the money transferred to my personal account. I really appreciate all the information that I keep getting from this forum. |
Hey people, I have a question regarding pof. My mum is providing my funds. I am a signatory to her account. I would like to know if I should just leave the money in her account and have the bank write a letter, identifying me as a signatory. Or should I just have it transferred to my personal account. Please advise. Thank you. |

@infamous International students are not permitted to study medicine. I am sure of Canada and majority of universities in USA but, I don't know about other countries. |
Lawyers in the house, please how easy was it to transition to the Canadian legal system? I heard the licensing process is tough. Please, can someone shed more light on it even if it is someone else's experience. Thank you. |
@michv I agree with you. It's such a stressful and unforgettable experience. I was once refused a us visa years ago but later reapplied and got the visa and now all I do is renew whenever it expires but I can never forget the experience and stress involved so how on earth will I forget to put that in an application? Please let's do better. |
@osemigho thank you very much, getting right to it. @matic, yes I got a letter form the dean telling me that it is a competitive course and they take only 20 students. |
@osemigho I studied public administration and want to go for masters in public administration. I have also worked at the bank for 3years. My budget is about 27000CAD per year that is tuition, accommodation and all so I don't necessarily need a scholarship. Please advise. |
Hey house, I have been following this tread for a while and I have learnt a lot. I applied to university of manitoba and saskatchewan and did not get in due to the fact that the program I applied to is competitive. I graduated with 3.85/5 and thought I stood a good chance as it is a second class upper. Still awaiting decision from Alberta but somehow discouraged. Please gurus in the house(Austinpee, Yemdogg and others) do you think it is wise to consider a PGC because it seems that my cgpa is kind of low or are there other schools that can consider it that you know of. I would appreciate your response. Thank you. |
