It was a delight to reconnect with my former school mates from the University of Port Harcourt, forty years after graduation at the ongoing Unique Uniport Class of 1981 Reunion in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State .

Today was an eventful day as we visited notable sites in Bayelsa like the first oil well in Oloilbiri, Ogbia LGA Bayelsa State the Oil and Gas Park , a visit to our former lecturer Prof. E. I mean our Govts (present & past) can't do anything rational due to poor laws & neglect of citizens, the only thing we are good in is using force to make citizens accept Govt's decisions.
Thanks, hope all will be well!
It’s been nice relating with you. I believe if we listen and understand ourselves this way we’ll be able to create solutions and move forward

What do you mean by
“How do you expect suck people to tackle your problem except by force”?
Also I don’t think everything is about the government. As a people we should be able to advance and make life better for ourselves. Also I think bringing PMB into this is out of context and will only take us back to being biased, political and tribalistic. Once again thank you. It has been great so far
ArewaNorth:

Govts at all level in Nigeria are not performing their rightful duties. The grazing routes are made by colonial masters, therefore our Legislators have the responsibility to make mutually beneficial laws especially in areas where there are conflicts.
Herders are Nigerians, and states with significant number of herders should have made laws to regulate their business, the laws must meet the contemporary standards of cattles breeding that will make the business modern and highly profitable. The neglect is too much not only on this single case but in all the daily living of Nigerians.
Our leaders are so lazy that they can't even make laws that can meet the culture, tradition and complexity of Nigerians but went to some extent to borrow most of their Govt style and policies from whites. How do u expect such people to tackle your problems except by force?
The solution to the problem is for both state and Federal Legislators to make laws which are unequivocally not bias, fair, beneficial to all and free from ethno-religious hitches.
Govt should use both kinetic and non-kinetic approach to deal with the rising issues of banditry and kidnapping which are mostly in the circle of Fulani.
Nigerians should eschew stereotyping and ethnic profiling of Fulani because of their political differences with PMB because the Fulani causing these havoc are very few comapred to Fulani population. Both innocent and bad herders living in the bush can't account for 2% of Fulani population in Nigeria.
Politics / Re: Sheikh Gumi Takes Medical Outreach To Herdsmen In Kogi Forest by Adrian98(m): 11:09am On Nov 24, 2021
Well once again thank you. You mentioned blocking of routes and more. Don’t you think that we have gotten to the stage and time where cows and herders don’t just roam the streets or wherever they feel like but a secluded space they can call their own? This way no one can come and disrupt their herding. This way their cows won’t be stolen easily. Also I’ll like to hear from you since we are already engaged in this topic. How can these acts be stopped or reduced
ArewaNorth:

FARMERS-HERDERS CLASH
For many years there has always been a conflict between farmers and herders. The main cause of the problem are these; some traditional rulers sell large portion of grazing lands (RUGA) to farmers which consequently lead to conflicts because the supposed land to have their cows graze is sold and turned farm will block their route and herders will graze their cows in it, some herders believe grazing on people's land can bring prosperity on their cows (superstition).
BANDITRY
Fulani were allegedly used as a tool to get easy money by a combined team of traditional rulers, Police, Judges and some business men. When herder commit offence the police and court charge him too much money, he has to sell cows and pay. Vigilant group set up to tackle banditry later became used to extra judicially kill the Fulani bandits in an attempt to stop the bribery and corruption in the supposed to be justice system. However, this killing made the Fulani bandits to slowly become what they are today.
The police sometimes will take all the cows to police station and sell them if they commit a big crime. Their fellow Fulani bandits started stealing their cows (hundred of cows) untill they rendered them cowless to the extent that if you don't have one of your child among the bandits they'll steal all cows from your family. The rich local business men enjoy stolen cows at cheaper prices. If the bandits are caught they get a soft landing from judges in connivance with Police and release them (justice was a subject of cash exchange at the highest bids in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina).
Before we know, a syndicate of bandits were organised which is a product of banditry, neglect and injustice. After losing their cows to banditry and injustice they join the syndicate of banditry to survive because herders only know how to herd cows and nothing more.
Note: for a herder, it is better to lose a relative to death than to lose a cow, cow is the most precious thing for them, more important than God to the most illiterates among them.
EXTENSION OF CONFLICT TO SOUTHERN NIGERIA AND NORTH-CENTRAL STATES
In a typical transhuman practice, Fulani cattle breeders usually drive their herds from their original home lands in the arid Sahel region of Northern Nigeria during the dry season into guinea savannah and the rainforests of central and southern Nigeria in search of greener pasture. Once the raining season sets in, nomadic herdsmen will commence a homeward journey from the south through the central to the northernmost part of the country. And year after year, the seasonal cycle of movement of cattle from north to south and back to the north has become the defining feature of the Fulani cultural occupation of nomadic pastoralism in Nigeria.
However, this practice is not without its problems. In a country of indigenous tribesmen and not a nation of citizens such as Nigeria, where access to land is mostly by privilege of birth and not always an economic right, the indigenous peoples of central and southern Nigeria are predominantly farmers, who require their lands for crop cultivation. The cultural occupation of farming of these indigenous communities usually gets disrupted by the transhumance of the Fulani herdsmen, whose cows often stray into farmlands and eat up crops, even before they are harvested. With a weak policing system and slow dispensation of justice by constituted authorities, aggrieved parties often take the laws in their hands, thereby ensuing in farmers/herders clashes.
At the core of this ethnic nationalism is the carefully contrived mindset that there is such a thing as a legally gazetted grazing reserves and routes for herdsmen, which has now been encroached upon by sedentary communities along the lines of the traditional routes, running from the north to the south. Convinced about the existence of these gazetted routes and reserves across Nigeria, many Fulani herdsmen have now come to believe themselves to be the victims and farmers the offenders in the encroachment upon their traditional grazing routes. Motivated by this belief, the Fulani herdsman now considers the invasion of farmlands with their cows and destruction of crops as only a legitimate process for the recovery of their grazing routes. And when farming communities put up resistance to what they consider as trespass, an armada of Fulani militia men were mobilised into Nigeria from the neighbouring countries of the Sahel to launch a “cow war” in Nigeria

Thank you for this but you only talked about Gumi and not specifically about the bandits or herdsmen and how they are causing havoc. Once again thank you
ArewaNorth:

It is obvious that Sheikh Gumi is a Medical Doctor and former Army Captain and later retired and became Islamic scholar.
Islam is a very vast and complex religion, it is very difficult for Non-Muslims and Muslims with little knowledge of Islam and Islamic history to understand Gumi and his actions.
Gumi belongs to the Mutazilite school of thought, one of Islamic philosophy. Just like how we have people with Shi'a or Sunni philosophy but he is Sunni with Mutazilite principles.
Muʿtazilites believe that good and evil are not always determined by revealed scripture or interpretation of scripture, but they are rational categories that could be "established through unaided reason"; because knowledge is derived from reason; reason, alongside scripture, was the "final arbiter" in distinguishing right and wrong.
The school worked to resolve the theological "problem of evil": how to reconcile the justice of an all-powerful God with the reality of evil in the world talkless of human Govt like Nigerian Govt.
The test of life is specifically for adults in full possession of their mental faculties. Children may suffer, and are observed to suffer, given the nature of life but they are believed to be completely free from sin and liability. Divine justice is affirmed through the theory of compensation. All sufferers will be compensated. This includes Non-believers and, more importantly, children, who are destined to go to Paradise without any after life trial. No specific Islamic Nation that have this philosophy as very few scholars are today left with this ideology especially Euro-American Islamic scholars.
Going by the Islamic Philosophy of Mutazilites which is the ideology of Sheikh Gumi and the only Islamic scholar in Nigeria with this ideology, it can be seen that there is nothing to be surprised from Gumi's actions except from Non-Muslims who are not familiar with this Islamic school of thought. They are extremely moderate and believe all sins can be forgiven, no matter the gravity of the sin.
Sheikh Gumi is one of the scholars that are not liked by most Nigerian Muslims due to his controversial views on Islamic principles which are in most cases contrary to the Teachings of Hadith.

Thank you. Do you think Buhari despite his military experience is being biased and being tribalistic?
Safyqueen:

Something is wrong and somethings are also right with this Gumi medical expedition.

There are rumour that this banditry are sponsored by the owners of the dislodged illegal gold miners which majority of them are retired army officials. Some says they are also elites who are never at any point in time like Buhari as a president. They are also category of elites deadly hit hardest by TSA. All these assertion fits Gumi.

However there are genuine Fulani herdsmen that are not bandits. They are also victim of banditry and animal rustling but the media had contributed in politicising the menace in such a way that not only Buhari but majority of the northerners now believe they need to protect or defend their own.

Buhari is just too weak to use government machinery to deal with this people until things get messy and usually too late then. He is too slow.
