The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and
Project for Human Development (PHD), a civil
society organisation, have asked President
Muhammadu Buhari to resist any form of blackmail
or pressure to repeal the on law same sex
marriage in Nigeria as he visits President Barack
Obama of the United States of America.
The Director of Mobilisation of CAN, Mr. Sunday
Oibe, in an interview with THISDAY in Kaduna,
described the decision of yesterday the Supreme
Court in America to legalise same-sex marriage as
the highest form of ungodliness.
He maintained that Muslims, Christians and
animists in Nigeria had taken a unanimous stand
against same sex marriages, declaring that there
was no going back on the issue, no matter the
amount of pressure or blackmail from any foreign
nation.
Oibe said: “President Buhari should not give in to
any pressure from any quarters on the issue of
same sex marriage. Whatever the agenda of his
meeting with President Obama, our president is
aware that Nigerians will not subscribe to same
sex marriage.”
He declared: “The judgement of God is upon
anyone who subscribed to same sex marriage,”
noting that Nigeria has taken an official position
against same sex marriage.
“If there is anything that unite Christians, Muslims
and animists in this country, it is the issue of this
same-sex marriage.
“If America which was founded on the word of God
has decided to be ungodly and taken position
against God, the repercussion of their action is
coming because Sodom and Gomorrah was
destroyed by God over the same sin that America
has committed.”
According to him, “When a nation takes an official
position against God, it is doomed. America was
founded on the premise of the word of God. If you
see the currency of America, there is an
inscription ‘In God We Trust.’
“This means that the founding fathers of the
American nation depended on God during their
struggles in their trying moments.”
He said it was unfortunate that the American
Supreme Court, in the name of human rights and
freedom, has decided to undermine the thinking of
the founding fathers of this nation that has reached
the peak of greatness through the grace of God.
He added that one of the things that Nigerians will
continue to celebrate former President Goodluck
Jonathan for, was his signing of the law against
same sex marriage, despite opposition from some
of the western nations, especially the US.
Also, PHD at a rally in Lagos, against the backdrop
of Buhari’s visit to the US, has urged Buhari not to
listen to the US government on gay rights issue, so
as to protect the laws and values of Nigeria.
The theme of the rally was, ‘Gay Marriage: Obama,
Please Leave Nigeria Alone.’
Buhari will today be at Washington DC on a four-
day official visit, during which he will hold talks
with President Obama and other senior officials of
the US government.
The Director-General of PHD, Mr. Jerry Okwuosa,
said the rally was to hint Buhari on the fears by
Nigerians that Obama might ask him to
decriminalise “the Same Sex Prohibition Law of
Nigeria.”
According to him, this is a way for the US to
promote gay rights, which is a part of America
foreign policy.
”The US is now the major exporter of gay rights in
the world. It has recently pressurised Uganda for a
reverse of its anti-gay law.
“Under the influence of the US, Mozambique has
recently decriminalised its anti-gay law. At the
moment, US is putting pressure on Kenya to
legalise gay marriage.
“President Obama is meeting with President Buhari
tomorrow to discuss issues which include security,
economy, Ebola and gay marriage legalisation in
Nigeria.
“Fear is being entertained that Obama might trade
off US assistance to President Buhari’s
government with shooting down Jonathan’s anti-
gay law.
“We are however, urging President Buhari to reject
such a trade-off, ” he said.
Also speaking, Mr. Sonnie Ekwowusi, a director of
PHD, noted that the only way to avoid chaos in any
society was for the legislature to make laws in
accordance with the values and aspirations of the
people.
According to him, homosexuality is not Nigeria
culture; it is a taboo or abomination.
“Homosexuality is not our culture. Every society
has its own values and should grow with those
values. Nigeria has her own values and we must
stick to our values and tradition.
“Laws are made in consonant with the values of
the people. Every country is interested in
protecting what it holds dear.
“Our view is that homosexuality is an acquired
habit that ought to be eradicated and not be
transformed into an acceptable human conduct by
law (in Nigeria).
“Our recommendation with regard to same sex
marriage is absolute prohibition,” Ekwowusi said.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African
Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, had stated that
America would continue to pressurise Nigeria until
it legalises same sex marriage.
She made this known on July 13 during a live-web
chat with journalists in Washington.
The peaceful rally featured placards with
inscriptions such as- ‘Obama, Please leave Nigeria
Alone’; ‘Gay Marriage should Remain Illegal in
Nigeria’; ‘Obama is Not God’; ‘Gay Marriage, Buhari
Don’t Listen to Obama.’
The protesters, numbering about 50, including
lawyers and youth leaders of both sexes, paraded
from the Tafawa Balewa Square, through Lagos
City Hall, to the MUSON Centre. |
President Barack Obama is hosting Nigerian
President Muhammadu Buhari for a meeting
Monday at the White House with the threat
posed by Boko Haram militants expected to
top the agenda.
The two leaders, along with U.S. Vice
President Joe Biden, will also likely discuss
proposed political and economic reforms in
Nigeria aimed at ending widespread
corruption.
The four-day trip is Buhari's first to
Washington since being elected in March and
taking office in May in a rare peaceful
transition of power in Nigeria.
The White House said the visit emphasizes
U.S. "commitment to strengthening and
expanding our partnership with Nigeria's
new government" and supporting its people.
Buhari will also have breakfast with Biden on
Monday and later meet with West African
diplomats, World Bank executives, and
members of the U.S. Congress. He is
scheduled to hold a town hall meeting with
Nigerians on Tuesday.
Both the U.S. and Nigeria appear eager to
improve relations after years of strained ties
under President Goodluck Jonathan. Nigerian
officials had turned down some of the
assistance the U.S. offered to combat Boko
Haram, even after the militant group sparked
international outrage with the kidnapping of
more than 200 schoolgirls in May 2014. |
1. Burn your blueprint. Rid yourself of whatever fantasies you harbor about the bliss of coupled life. They’re not helping. There is no script, so don’t be disappointed when your fairytale gets hijacked. 2. Forgive. Didn’t Jesus say something about forgiving someone not just seven times but seventy times seven? That would be 490 times….which should last you through your first 6 months. Jesus underestimated because, remember, he wasn’t married. 3. And forget. If you forgive but don’t forget, did you really forgive? I know people who claim to have forgiven but still use every available opportunity to bring it up. And if you don’t want to forgive, forgetting works just as well. 4. Be a good teammate. Life can come at you hard. One of the nice things about marriage and relationships is being able to have someone else in the bunker when you’re getting shelled. 5. Grow. If you still have the same desires, opinions and beliefs at age 50 that you did at age 25, that’s your own damn fault. You will not, and should not, be the same person you were then. 6. And adapt. Even if you stagnate, the person you’re in a relationship with will change. Don’t fight it. Embrace it, learn from it, be thankful for it. 7. Find your faith. There is great comfort in believing in something or someone beyond our crude human existence. Explore this belief. Take this journey together. 8. Travel together. Travel forces couples to rely on one another in unpredictable ways. It will also broaden your worldview and the way you value your relationship. 9. Travel separately. I want to go to Australia and you want to go to Maine? Cool. Take lots of pictures. See you in a week. 10. Develop your own interests. It seems counter-intuitive, but you will enhance your relationship when you pursue your separate interests. 11. Cultivate a wide, diverse circle of friends. One of the greatest joys of living is meeting new people. And many of the people you meet will likely make you appreciate your mate even more. 12. Don’t keep score. I know a couple who keeps track of the number of times each partner completes a household chore. Don’t do this. It’s exhausting. And childish. 13. Exercise. You owe it to each other to be in the best physical health possible. The mental side effects from exercise will also be beneficial. 14. Practice self-awareness. Take frequent looks in the mirror. Reflect on who you are and the contributions you are making to your relationship. Are you being judgmental? Unfair? Harsh? Hypercritical? Defensive? 15. Admit that you’re wrong (even, on occasion, when you aren’t). This is both the easiest and hardest thing to do on this list. But this simple gesture will pay immeasurable dividends; it will help you grow and it’s just the right thing to do. 16. Celebrate accomplishments big and small. Whether it’s a promotion at work or the police officer let you off with just a warning, find every occasion possible to toast your good fortune. 17. Surprise one another. Fill up her car. Let him sleep alone in the bed once in a while. Buy some bacon. 18. It’s the good little things. Holding the door, suggesting a movie night, paying attention. The reward for these is greater than the sum of the parts. 19. And it’s the bad little things. Cracking your knuckles, spitting, clearing your throat, picking your nose, chewing ice. These are death by a thousand cuts to your relationship. 20. Cultivate your finer qualities. When do you ever have an opportunity to really work on qualities that make you a better person? In a strong relationship, you can do it every single day. Qualities like patience, loyalty, compassion, trust. 21. The bathroom is private. If you think it’s quaint to brush your teeth while I use the toilet, you’ll change your mind about that eventually. Trust me. 22. Talk about sex (but not just right before, during, or right after). Sex is an important part of any relationship. But for some reason couples don’t want to discuss it unless they are in the throes of passion. Don’t make sex a taboo subject. 23. Encourage each other. We all have insecurities. Your relationship is one place where you should be completely free to reveal these and your spouse should help you overcome them. 24. It’s okay to have secrets. Even George Bailey slipped Violet Bick a $20 bill every now and then. 25. Avoid subtext. This is a cowardly way to communicate. If you have something to say, say it. Don’t hint about it. 26. Put it down. The toilet seat. Her cell phone. The beat. 27. Pick it up. Your dirty sock. Your used tissue. The pace. 28. Don’t over-romanticize past (or future) relationships. You weren’t that great and your ex isn’t that hot. 29. Never use the “s” word. Don’t call each other “stupid.” That’s just stu…. not wise. 30. Offer solutions, not criticism. Anyone can criticize. A good teammate (See Rule 4) will offer a way out. 31. Read. To escape or to expand. Either way, it helps. 32. You are equals. It doesn’t matter which one of you makes the most money. It doesn’t matter which one of you has the better REO Speedwagon vinyl collection. It doesn’t matter which one of you has the best nickname. It doesn’t even matter which one of you has the coolest food allergy. 33. Compliment each other. Sincerely and often. 34. Respect each other’s friends. You know your wife’s loud mouthed, insane friend Cathy who thinks you have weak bullshit and can’t believe you married her BFF? See below. 35. Know when to keep your mouth shut. No list would be complete without the “Do these jeans make my butt look big?” lesson. 36. Indulge each other’s passions. Scrapbooking doesn’t count. 37. Lose your arbitrary moral code. This list alone proves that I am the king of the double standard. When I want to spend money on a new set of golf clubs, it’s a good investment. When my wife wants to spend money on new kitchen countertops, she’s a profligate. It’s not exactly fair. 38. Respect space and time. Have we not evolved as a species or watched enough Dr. Phil to realize our mate does not want to answer the question “How was your day?” the minute he/she walks in the door? 39. Take pride in your appearance. Your marriage license doesn’t give you a free pass to always wear sweat pants and T-shirts. 40. Maintain good hygiene. Could your big toenail puncture a snow tire? Could your breath peel wallpaper? Take care of that, please. I don’t want to have to tell you again. 41. Ask before you throw it away. Don’t touch that broken, ceramic, animated cactus tequila shot glass holder. I’m serious. 42. Invite his/her family to special gatherings. At least once. Thankfully, this may be all you need. 43. Speaking of family, everyone gets a holiday card and a birth announcement. Even your creepy Uncle Steve and their psycho cousin Lisa. 44. Don’t be petty. So I forgot to stop at the store to get your prescription. Did you have to throw away my ceramic cactus shot glass holder? 45. Be self-sufficient. Learn to do your own laundry. Know how to cook a meal; how to navigate the grocery store; how to make an online purchase; how to turn off the water to the house; how to erect a Nerf basketball hoop; how to unclog a toilet. 46. Everything is fair game for a joke. This should be at the heart of everything you do. I have not found a single thing that I have been unable to eventually laugh about. If you know this from the beginning, it makes things a lot more fun. 47. Have good manners. Don’t yell. Open the door. Help carry the groceries. Cover your cough. Hold your gas. 48. Be responsible with money. No one lives on love. You need money. If you earned it, you will almost certainly respect it. If you didn’t earn it, you must respect it even more. 49. Remember to say thank you. Even and especially when things don’t seem like they need to be acknowledged. 50. Adapting beats abandoning. There will be moments when you want to quit, walk out, give up. You can do that. But you will probably be doing so without giving due consideration to the new life that awaits you. Will you be better off in six months? 10 years? |

He said that he would still give his best to the state, notwithstanding the inherited liabilities. Lalong debunked insinuations that he was part of the governors who went to President Muhammadu Buhari to ask for help in clearing the backlog of workers salaries because he had the option of taking a loan. He promised to improve on the quality of primary and secondary education in the state. Lalong said that he also had to contend with myriad of other problems and challenges bequeathed to him by the last administration in the state. The governor said that this included a decaying and faulty educational system. He said that for any society to develop there was need for a sound education system, adding that his administration would leave nothing to chance to ensure quality education. Rev. Sister Mary Katlong, the Principal of the college, said that there was need to improve the standard of education in the state and the country in general. The principal expressed worry that Plateau came last in a national secondary competition that was held recently. She therefore appealed that the governor should mobilise all that was needed to put education on the right pedestal. There were 64 graduating students of the college of which Juliet Nweke emerged the overall best graduating student while Rachael Bernard was the best graduating student in CISCO and computer science. THE Nigerian Civil Defense and Security Corps, (NCDSC ) , Delta State Command has arrested seven suspected oil pipeline vandals while ferrying 66, 000 liters of crude oil from the state to neighbouring Anambra state . The suspects: Muhammadu Abdulkareem , Ifeanyi Agbo , Augustine Asemota , Endurance Mordi, Ajulo Sunday , Ifeanyi Illoh and Chiemer Ikechukwu , were arrested along Kwale- Nssukwa road in Delta state on Saturday . Mrs. Beatrice Irabor, The state Commandant , who paraded the suspects at the headquarters of the command in Asaba said tanker truck , driven by Muhammadu Abdulkareem and assisted by Ifeanyi Agbo containing 33, 000 liters of stolen crude oil was seized. She narrated that the Anti-Vandal Squad of the NCDSC caught the suspects while transporting the product in their truck and container lorries with registration numbers , Delta LEH 206 XA , Delta 325 SKL and Edo Auc 62 XA respectively, she said , “ The other two container trucks were also loaded with 33,000 liters . They were arrested at about 3a .m by our Anti- Vandals Squad while conveying the illegal product to Onitsha in Anambra state .” She advised vandals and their sponsors to abandon the crime or be forced out of it in due course, “proper investigation will be carried out on the suspects , after that, prosecution will take place in accordance with the law ,” she stated. However , following the Inspector-General of Police’ s directives on the strengthening of security on the highways, the Delta State Commissioner of Police , Usman Baba , on Saturday allayed the fears of the residents in the state by launching Safer Highways Patrol Teams. He dismissed the speculation that the withdrawal of military check points across the state and nationwide would not lead to increase of crime. “ The command wishes to use this medium to inform the general public and road users that although the ban on road blocks on the highway is still in force , patrol men could occasionally embark on stop and search as part of crime preventive and detective mechanisms ” , he said. |
South- East and South-West groups have faulted what they described as the lopsided appointments made by President Muhmammadu Buhari , recently . The groups, Afenifere , Yoruba Unity Forum ( YUF), the Movement for Oodua Republic ( MOR) , Ohanaeze Ndigbo , The Igbo World Union, Njiko Igbo Group and the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) , said that so far, Buhari ’s appointments favoured the Northern parts of the country, while disregarding the federal character policy. They pointed out that such lopsided appointments had never happened in the political history of the country. The YUF Secretary General, Senator Anthony Adefuye , warned that the earlier the situation was reversed , the better, so as not to give the impression that the North is marginalising the South. He said, “The fact that the President, Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives are from the North is worrisome . There is no way the North can take all the principal offices and leave the deputy to us . It has never happened before and the earlier it is reverted, the better. “ There is no way that can continue because the South is not subordinate to the North . The think- tank committee of the YUF will meet soon to look at the issue and see how it affects the Yoruba people . However , the development is a wrong signal that must be corrected. “ What is more worrisome is that the immediate past INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, handed over to a Southerner but the Presidency changed it to a Northerner . We are watching and waiting to see what comes out of this new government . “ Southerners are always careful and concerned not to marginalise the North . Therefore, I will not expect the North to marginalise the South now that the Presidency is shifted to the region. ” Also , the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere , Yinka Odumakin, said that the group was closely monitoring Buhari’ s actions and taking note of them . Also , George Akinola , the leader of MOR, warned that Nigeria was heading towards total conflict should the situation continue. Meanwhile , the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo , Chief Gary Enwo - Igariwey , advised Buhari to respect the principle of federal character when making appointments. He said: “We expect the President to recognise other nationalities that make up Nigeria . Elections are over, it is time for governance. We expect that the principle of federal character, which is constitutional, should be respected. “ It is important that in making his appointments, the President should recognise that there are six geo - political zones in the country and it is imperative that he carries all of them along in the spirit of nation building and as a statesman .” The Igbo World Union and the Ohanaeze Youth Council described the president ’ s actions as a threat to the corporate existence of Nigeria The OYC national president , Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro , said : “ Buhari should not abuse his privileged position as the President of Nigeria for the moment. He should not forget our federal system but reflect the federal character in his appointments. “ We are warning him to drop the Northern agenda and govern Nigeria in line with the constitution which he swore to protect. We will hold him by his statement that ‘he is for nobody and for everybody’ except he now wants to tell us that he is the President of the North alone. “ Jonathan appointed Northerners as his National Security Adviser, Defence Minister, Inspector- General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff etc. But so far, Buhari has shown us that he has no regard for other parts of the country.” In the same vein, the president general of Igbo World Union, Dr. Mishak Nnanta , advised Buhari not to give in to any ill - advice from individuals with parochial interests . |

"I thought this would never happen but it is time for me to say goodbye to Chelsea. The club I have lived every single minute for since joining in July 2004, the club in which I thought I'd hang my gloves and boots one day and finish my career. But life doesn't always turn out the way you think it will. "Since 2004 it has been an incredible journey with so many highs and not many lows. We have managed to win every single English trophy as well as the Europa League and the biggest of all - Champions League. Looking back at all the achievements, including our first-ever league double in 2010, back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, and multiple EPL and FA Cup wins, I couldn't be more proud! As a team we made history together! "Last summer, things changed and I understood I was no longer the first-choice keeper but I felt it was not the right time for me to go. During the season it became clear that my situation would not improve and as I know I am not at the stage of my career when I want to be on the bench, I made my decision to move on and look for new challenges. "The limited playing time gave me the chance to refresh and rest mentally as well as make me realise just how much I enjoy playing football at the highest level, because I missed it badly every game day I was not involved. I have the same commitment to football, the same motivation and the same hunger for success as I had at the beginning of my career and I love the challenges brought by the top-quality players you face while playing the Premier League - simply the best and the most challenging league in the world. "That's why I spoke to Mr Abramovich about me staying in the Premier League and I'd like to thank him from the bottom of my heart for his support in this matter. It means so much to me because without him Chelsea would not be where it is now. He deserves huge credit for what he has done for the club and for all of us. "I would like to personally thank everybody involved with Chelsea for their support - all the players, staff, managers and all the coaching staff I have had the pleasure of working with over the years. Without them it would have been impossible for us to have achieved such success. "But most important of all - a huge thank-you goes to all the Chelsea fans. I did everything for you and you gave me your love back. I'll never forget it. It will stay with me forever. We will meet again but this time I will be in the other goal - I hope you will remember our history and understand it is time for me to begin a new adventure. "I wish everybody at Chelsea all the best for the new season and for the future. Thank you for an incredible 11 years." |
