Pyrate Confraternity expresses concern over spate of corruption in Nigeria The Association of Seadogs, Pyrate Confraternity, has expressed concern over a spate of corruption in Nigeria. This is because it describes corruption as an unfortunate phenomenon and a danger that poses a lethal threat to human integrity. It said virtually all the countries in the world are having their own share of this endangering vice. The confraternity said, “Little wonder, it has been tagged to be ‘normal’ in daily engagements with others, such that it is often adopted in the race to achieve a wealthy livelihood. “It is a phenomenon that has a colossal negative impact on the social, political, and economic stability of a nation, a menace that is living and growing uncontrollably within the human community and, if not curbed, would completely destroy the humanitarian and empathetic features in human beings, hence the birth of the ‘International Anti-Corruption Day. Pyrate Confraternity said it respected International Anti-Corruption Day, which is observed and celebrated on December 9 every year, saying, “It is to remind the globe of the responsibility of curtailing it and also to raise awareness among the general public on the impact of the prevailing insanity in many countries as well as raise concern on the destructive effects of corruption on the growth of society at large.”. It said it was as a result of this that the Abeokuta Chapter of the Association, alongside the Canada Chapter, organised a television programme to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day. Speaking at the programme, which was aired on Ogun State Television (OGTV), Abeokuta, two discussants, Mr Adeyemi Akintunde, a veteran Journalist and Comrade Yinka Folarin, Executive Director, Human Rights and Grassroot Development Society, The duo were invited to speak on the malpractice that has eaten deep into the lives of human beings. Speaking during the programme, Akintunde said that the issue is not peculiar to Nigeria but prevalent all over the world. According to him, ‘’Corruption is complex in nature and is a social, political, and economic phenomenon that has contributed to our governmental instability’’. He said these vices have really dealt with people immensely, saying, for instance, that it is evident in the health sector, where numerous untimely deaths of citizens are recorded. Folarin equally condemned the act of corruption and also reiterated that the health sector is porous with corruptible representatives who do not take human lives seriously. He said that these unscrupulous people tend to manage wealth that is needless in the first place. According to him, ‘’We will have a human rights-respecting society if we are able to eradicate corruption in our lives. As a result of corruption, the lives of the people are being threatened and trampled upon. In the health sector, ‘’When they steal what belongs to the entire population, what do we use to equip our health facilities? Which apparently means the lives of the people are threatened. “Corruption will entail denying people their rights at all levels of engagement, denying them a good livelihood, denying them the right to a good education, denying them affordable and accessible access to good health care, and many more,” he explained. In conclusion, he said it is paramount and, as a matter of acceleration, that “we all must ensure that this menace does not hamper the existence of a sane environment, and as such, we all have important roles to play in kicking it out of our mental state of reasoning by fastening our seat belts and gearing ourselves towards a better and a free-of-corruption future.” https://tribuneonlineng.com/pyrate-confraternity-expresses-concern-over-spate-of-corruption-in-nigeria/

NAS Abeokuta Chapter Strongly Condemns Tragic Killing of Director of Finance, Calls for Swift Justice The National Association of Seadogs, NAS Abeokuta Chapter has expressed profound dismay over the shocking killing of Mr Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance and Account attached to the office of Governor Dapo Abiodun, at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta. The NAS received reports indicating that Mr Oyekanmi lost his life tragically on the NNPC bridge near Kuto, Abeokuta, while returning to his office from Fidelity Bank, where he had gone for a routine withdrawal. In response to this, yet another scary incident in the macabre series of murders that have over the years dumbfounded the population, NAS has issued a strong condemnation, fiercely denouncing the act. The association is calling on both the government and security institutions to take swift and decisive action to unravel the circumstances surrounding Mr Oyekanmi's killing. In a statement signed by the Capoon, Prince Olubiyi Adegbenga, the group expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and stressed the need for heightened security measures to safeguard the lives of citizens to prevent further losses of lives. NAS emphasized the urgency of obtaining justice for the grieving family, urging authorities to address the root cause of such social menace to prevent recurrence. "We demand for a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice, serving as a deterrent to others." "A decisive and thorough investigation becomes pertinent because of the obvious but unswered questions raised by the circumstance of the death of this strategic officer." "NAS can not come to terms with the fact that the State Government is transacting with and moving such a large amount a hundred million naira plus in CASH while the government harps on cashless policy." The organisation also raised suspicion of a foul play on the fact that only the director of finance was killed in the incident. Therefore, as an organisation with a firm root in justice we hereby join the bereaved family in calling for a thorough probe and justice to bring the criminals behind the cruelty to book as the community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant.

The platform, according to Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, at an educational summit on Thursday in Abuja, is a convergence of world-class and globally renowned educational resources aimed at reshaping the nation’s higher education landscape. He maintained that BIMS is set to revolutionise the way students access educational services and more, being the gateway for accreditation and authorisation to access the Tertiary Education Research Applications and Services platform (TERAS). “The countless benefits that TERAS promises to bring to educators, students, and the entire educational community are awe-inspiring and must be fully exploited. “Some of the benefits of BIMS include streamlined enrollment and identification processes; Enhanced data security and accuracy; Personalised learning experiences; Access to tailored educational services; Improved communication between students and educational institutions,” the minister stated. Meanwhile, in his remark, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, shed light on the historical significance of the TERAS platform, which was born out of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. TERAS, he explained, has been meticulously designed to integrate various essential components, and at its core is the BIMS. Also speaking at the event, the former Executive Secretary of TETFund, Professor Suleiman Bagoro declared, “TERAS has its origins in the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic.” “The pandemic brought forth a profound disruption in the nation’s education system. In response to this, the Nigerian government took swift and strategic action. The Federal Ministry of Education introduced a series of policies and directives that would lay the groundwork for TERAS, a revolutionary platform to mitigate the disruptions. “The initial stages of BIMS’s development witnessed the registration of over two million students and staff from beneficiary institutions. However, this is just the beginning. He further stressed that BIMS’ integration within TERAS creates an ecosystem of comprehensive services that extend to institutions, staff, and students. These services encompass sponsored Mobile Internet Access, plagiarism checking through EagleScan, aggregated Journal and Research Subscriptions that include respected resources like EBSCO, the Blackboard Learning Management System, Digital Literacy programs like ICDL, Communication Skills training, and Intervention Funding. https://sunnewsonline.com/tetfund-unveils-bims-for-tertiary-institution-students/

#WorldMentalHealthDay: Pyrates Charge Society On Upholding The Rights Of Those With Mental Illnesses The National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity through a resource person, Dr Iyanuoluwa Balogun, a mental health advocate and psychiatrist at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, has charged the society at large and the government to be more involved in upholding the rights of people with mental illnesses. This charge was made in Abeokuta during the radio programme, Citizens Forum on the RockCity 101.9 FM Abeokuta, Day Break Show. The programme which was sponsored by the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Ash Montana Deck in collaboration with Long Island and Grundziro Decks, was part of activities to commemorate the 2023 edition of the World Mental Health Day. It was stressed that upholding the rights of individuals with mental illnesses suggest they should not be discriminated against because of their mental illnesses; they should not be stigmatized because of their mental challenges; and they should have access to adequate health care which should be affordable; access to work and even housing; they should be allowed to be involved in making decisions affecting their health. Dr Balogun equally called for more government participation in protecting and promoting the mental wellness of her citizens. Responding to a question on the global theme of the 2023 World Mental Health Day, which is ‘’Mental Health is a Universal Human Right’’, Dr Balogun explained that the global theme suggests that all humans have the right to live freely and access health care of which mental health is inclusive. That mental health is a universal right also suggest that people with mental illnesses should be allowed the right to make decisions regarding their health care, particularly those with insight about their mental health status and with enough competence to make decisions. Those with mental illnesses have the right not to be discriminated against, or stigmatized, ‘’…recognizing mental health as a human right is saying that first of all, we want to erase stigma that surrounds mental health…; we want to make mental health accessible …’’ She noted the perception society has of people with mental health issues,‘’… when it comes to mental health particularly, there is an aversion to that word and it is not just a Nigerian thing. It is all over the world. People are averse to the concept of being mentally ill because to be honest it is a scary thing. You are talking about an illness of the mind. …when you are saying that there is an illness of the mind, you are saying that the mind might be broken or the mind is ill.’’ … ‘’And so generally all over the world, people are more hesitant to accept mental illnesses". This attitude often breed stigma, exclusion and discrimination against people with mental issues. To fight the challenges of stigmatization, exclusion, accessibility of affordable health care for people with mental health issues, she made the following suggestions: deliberate efforts by government bodies like policy makers pass all-inclusive and favourable laws for people with mental illnesses, massive education of people about mental health issues and awareness. The doctor suggested that a lot of times, our aversion towards conversations on mental health, lack of understanding or inability to accept that mental health illnesses can affect anyone irrespective of status, race or beliefs may be largely because of lack of proper education about mental health issues. Education can help remove fear and ignorance from the minds of people. Individuals and the government should be charged with this responsibility of massive education. She cited the sponsored radio programme by the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, as an example of a form of public education on mental health issues to create awareness and enlightenment. She re-echoed the role of education in demystifying mental health issues. ‘’The more we can demystify this thing, the more people can be aware and the more there is understanding and the lesser there can be fear’’. She observed also that people with mental illnesses are often afraid and careful about disclosing their mental health status. Therefore, ‘’people can be encouraged to share their experiences in safe zones.’’ Again, as part of measure to promote mental health as a universal right, Dr Balogun appealed to all to discourage the idea that mental illnesses are spiritual illnesses or an affliction or punishment from God. Adding that such myth further encourage stigma and exclusion. Reacting on the sub-theme, *"Mental Health and the Prevailing Economic Situations in the Country"* and the question on whether the economic situations in Nigeria can affect our mental health, Dr Balogun opined that the economic situations can indeed affect our mental health. According to her, the current economic problems can increase stress on the mind, uncertainty, hopelessness and fear. The condition of persons with some form of mental illnesses can be exacerbated by economic uncertainty too. The economy can put a strain on the mental health of the people to the extent that more people can break down, engage in adverse addictive behaviour like gambling, substances abuse, increase rate of suicide, and increase in depression. She proposed the following as workable solutions: the government should do more to ameliorate the harsh economic situations; people should learn to leave within their means; people should find ways to relax more through such activities like meditation, physical exercises, recreational activities like tours; eating healthier (eat more vegetables and more fruits); drink lots of water, getting adequate and proper rest, and taking care of our physical health. Reacting on how to deal with mental illnesses in children, teenagers and young adults, Dr Balogun advised on the need to create safe spaces for the children; such spaces starts from the home and then extends beyond. The discourse programme sponsored by the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Ash Montana Deck in collaboration with Long Island and Grundziro Decks, was done as part of the core values and ethos of the organisation in striving towards the attainment of a just and humane society through advocacy, public awareness, education, enlightenment, and humanitarian gestures. https://afrobadootv.com.ng/2023/10/20/pyrates-charge-society-on-upholding-the-rights-of-those-with-mental-illnesses/

PBAT’S REFORMS AND NIGERIAN YOUTHS I remain Habeeb Whyte and I still harbour the responsibility I believe life placed on me to suggest a path deserving a collective action from Nigerian youths towards the faith of our father’s land and in determining our own future. I have grown to know that everything that irritates us as Nigerian youths about someone can lead us to understanding the person more. Just like Adlous Hoxley puts it, ‘there are things known and there are things unknown and in between are door of perception’. What we are, is what we have been as youths. What we would be is what we do now. I am aware that wisdom comes from knowing that what others say about you is not your reality. It is their reality. One has not only an ability to perceive the world but an ability to alter one's perception of it. Simply, one can change things by the manner in which one looks at them. Reality is only a reflection of our own intentions, biases, knacks and desires. I have always looked with a different lens because I have kept my views informed not by parochial considerations or personal gains but by the solemn embrace of the fate of my realities as a Nigerian Youth. As a person, I have thoroughly taken caution on the realities of the general elections that ushered in President Bola Ahmad Tinubu. I have always known that only weak minds stay at the middle of the road in trying periods like this. I rather I appreciate that I have to painstakingly learn with the willingness to unlearn and relearn the politics of this country. More so, I was not born until the crisis had started. I do not want to join the bandwagon of commentators that make opinions on issues they know close to nothing about. I think this should be the wisest path for anybody that was only a child through the 90’s and beyond. The generational paradigm as it affects our choice of governance differs. Our reasoning often time is shaped by what our parents, teachers and elderly ones told us and not by what we participated in as major players. We have only participated in the Occupy Nigeria campaign, Not Too Young to Run campaign and the most pronounced is the End Sars campaign. I made bold to say that I partook in all the major phases of this campaign. I made my voice seen and felt by demanding for good governance and importantly, youth involvement in governance. I know that at a point. I am aware that in the past, no place was reserved for members of the youth constituency during policy formulations. We were weathered with policies that seem not to be too friendly to our growth but now the story has changed. There was a progressive call that was obeyed by the people in power. Allahu Akbar!!! Having fought for what was right, we became enemies to our progression by allowing the fate of governance ushered in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his political opponents to take the spaces where the world is judging us from. Our attitude across our social media platforms on our leaders is not worthy at all. We are distracted while these persons are living their lives – Their dreams. We are allowing men make mockery of our intelligence by sheepishly dragging us into the fate of their own dark hour. Are they better of Mr. President? We should better be concerned on how to help Mr. President achieve his goals. It should interest us that we have a listening leader and someone who prioritizes our constituency before any other constituency. The deliberate reason why some of us supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was because we saw him as that leader that would pave the way for the youths to become real stakeholders in governance. Every time Mr. President speaks to us a Nation, he continually emphasizes our importance. He gives us score cards but we are not really interested in assessing same with good critics. He kept on appointing and giving us key responsibilities at sectors that we would not have imagined any one from our constituency at earliest time like this to be in such position. I am aware that Mr. President is not only fulfilling his election promises but he is carrying the youths along towards achieving a sustainable future for this Nation. There is a steady engagement and participation of young people in the development process. A country we prayed for! I used to live in fear when discussions that bother on handing over of power to youths is concerned. This is because, I could picture the future as it would unfold should that happen. Why? Because, we Nigerian youths were not prepared for the role and we fail to recognize the fact that there has been deliberate effort to incapacitate us. This is what I mean whenever I talk about bastardization of our youths. Now, we are beginning to have a fair share of our lack of preparedness. What ideas are our representatives across board bringing onboard? Are we still bothered on who won or loss election? Are we still bent on why President Tinubu should not have won the elections while our various State Governors are getting palliatives from Federal Government and we are not seeing the effect in most States. I wish the type of energy deployed to bringing down the person of Mr. President could be extended to demanding for good governance from our Governors. Demanding accountability especially on the proceed of subsidy is concerned would have been true patriotism than the former. We are not even bothered that local governments are been buried in governance by most Governors in Nigeria. Are we not worried about the debt profile of some States and yet there is no evidence of development. The States that most of us we inherit as Governors, Senators, House of Representative members, House of Assembly members etc. as far as governance is concerned in years to come. What do we tend to make up as leaders of our generation; when our kids start asking questions, what type of answers are we planning to give them. Is it that we would be comfortable telling them that when we had a President with unprecedented electoral results and tribunal verdict, we were busy playing cards of his opponents. Would it not interest you to tell your kids you were part of those that speak and do good for the sake of the Country and not because you are Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo. You were a Nigerian before you identify as a Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo. This is us - that have forgotten so soon that most of our Governors are yet to publish the judgements of their respective tribunal of enquiries on the End Sars saga. It is just ridiculous that we are have been soaked into another narrative that would not add any legal value to our corporate existence. Whether bitter or sweet, Mr. President is here to stay. We must accept this reality and not be caught in a web of a divided society. We must give our total support to the social governance policy trust fund of Mr. President. He has tagged it the ‘Renewed Hope’ – we already have a developmental plan as opposed the several documents of plans and agenda intentioned on sentiments and prepared without national interests. We are beginning to see the light that we would be handed a working country with national development agenda under implementation, and enjoy the supervision of patriotic elders whose only consideration is national interest. The fact is this, we have a President that has placed upon himself the responsibility to provide the reference point of discipline, patriotism, humility, and adequate sense of self by extending his limits beyond the average standard that is acceptable to his generation. Mr. President has succeeded in employing his political authority to stimulate hope and pride in the corporate purpose of this Nation. We must not be used as detractors to the birth of a New Nigeria. Interestingly, youths of India, Singapore, Brazil, China and Indonesia compete with the world’s best in Information Technology, Agriculture, Entertainment, Alternative energy, Medicine etc. Of course, those building our bridges and roads are their own youths. The expatriate doctors in our best hospitals are their youths. Those designing and building the phones we use are their youths. Now, our own youths are already leading spaces more due to the deliberate intervention of Mr. President’s faith in our abilities. I could remember that one of the assurances of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Southwest APC Youths rally was that Mr. President would give opportunities to youths to flourish in their areas of activities, the Governor said young people would be part of the major drivers of the Tinubu presidency. This is never in doubt again. Mr. President in less than six months of Presidency has the highest number of youths in key and strategic positions in Government. The amazing part is that, Mr. President is not stopping. I would always wish for a productive mindset like that of our President. He is a thorough blend of the mosaic traits – he would lead the path to the New Nigeria. The path he kicks started from his very first appointment in office. It is unprecedented. If he is not the Messiah; he is the Moses. Thanks. Amb. Habeeb Whyte Esq., MBA. Democracy Day 2023: ‘Sustaining Democracy in Africa is a communal Effort’- National Association of Seadog It is no news that democracy had been truncated by unscrupulous activities of African leaders in the past which has caused the economic activities of these nations nosedive. Democracy has been simplified as a system of government ruled by the people. This signifies that; at all levels, peoples' representation and desire to be exposed to good living with availability of basic needs for survival must be fully secured by those entrusted with such responsibilities. This in no doubt has been the reverse over the years, especially in this part of the world, where some people believe they are competent to deliver the dividend of democracy as expected, thanks to their selfish and dramatic quest for wealth and power which has taken Centre stage. Based on the above submission and coupled with the insensitive nature of these set of democratically elected individuals, who have seized the opportunity to use public office to enrich themselves, changing the purpose and intent of democracy and replacing it with tyranny and oppression, the international democracy day was birthed through a unanimous resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 holding every 15th of September. This is a day set aside to be observed globally to celebrate, as well as review the state of democracy across the world, and it is in this vein that the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, has decided to align itself with this great ideology, to always review democracy and hold leaders responsible since Nigeria transit to democracy over 24 years ago. As part of the associations mission, the Abeokuta Chapter celebrated this day together with the rest of the world, sponsored with a radio program on Rockcity 101.9 (Day Break show), Abeokuta, Ogun State, between 10.15am and 11am to analyse and sensitise the public of the importance of this day. To achieve this, hosts of discussants, Mr Adeyemi Akintunde, a renowned journalist and legal luminary Barr. Habeeb Whyte, gave an insight and general view of how far democracy has thrived in Nigeria with respect to the theme 'EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION’. Mr Adeyemi spoke on the need for African leaders to engage and encourage youths to take leadership roles in order to sustain democracy across the African continent, and most especially in Nigeria so as to foster rapid development and growth of the nation. In the same order, Barr. Habeeb Whyte admonished youths occupying various offices in government to use the experience acquired in the course of discharging their responsibilities to develop and empower other youths by giving room to communal development. In conclusion, democracy is a system that assures equality, accountability and purposeful growth in any nation if managed in a judicious manner with a conscious focus on secured creation of enabling standard of living.

It is a rare sight in Nigeria for a man to unite the elites, bourgeoisie and working class under one roof. It is equally difficult to see Nigerians from different tribes come together in unity and respect of a common goal even more so when convened by a fellow Nigerian. The rarity of such occasions is lost on Senator Anyim Pius Anyim as he has continued to pull it off in the most natural manner and once more, he has done it. As he marked his 61st birthday on February 19 in Abuja, men from every stratum of the society gathered to commemorate the event. It is obvious that his non-discriminatory personality and impeccable track record of building consensus between different segments of the country is paying off. This grand event of his is proof of that. According to one of those present, Senator Anyim does not play favourites. No matter what part of Nigeria you are from, he treats you with equal respect. This is an attitude he has maintained all through his years in the public service and that is why he is considered a man of the people. 21 Likes 7 Shares
