Tulsa's black community unnerved by shootings

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa's black community was on edge Saturday after police said the same attacker or attackers were behind a series of shootings a day earlier that left three people dead and two more critically wounded.

Police are still waiting for the results of forensic tests, but investigators think the early Friday morning shootings are linked because they happened around the same time within a three-mile span and all five victims were out walking when they were shot.

Officer Jason Willingham said Saturday that police are searching for a white man driving a white pickup, which was spotted in the area of three of the shootings. At least two dozen officers are investigating the case, along with the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, Willingham said.

"We don't have one definitive way where this investigation is headed," Willingham said. "Right now, that's the only thing we have to go on."

Police don't believe the victims knew one another and are trying to determine the circumstances behind the killings. All five victims are black, and black community leaders met Friday evening in an effort to calm unrest and promote safety.

"We have to handle this because there are a number of African-American males who are not going to allow this to happen in their neighborhood," said the Rev. Warren Blakney Sr., president of the Tulsa NAACP. "We're trying to quell the feeling of `let's get someone' and we will make as certain as we can that this isn't pushed under the rug."

Blakney said "avid distrust" between the African-American community and the police department had raised concerns the shootings wouldn't be fully investigated, and he contacted police to emphasize the need for them to work together to avoid vigilantism.

Tulsa's police department has been tainted by accusations of corruption. Three ex-police officers and a former federal agent were sentenced to prison in December after a two-year investigation involving allegations of falsified search warrants, nonexistent informants, perjury and stolen drugs and money. Two other ex-officers were acquitted of stealing money during an FBI sting but fired after an internal affairs investigation.

More than a half-dozen lawsuits have been filed by people who claim they were wrongfully locked up by police, and nearly 40 people had their convictions overturned or prison sentences commuted as a result of the corruption probe. Prosecutors have suggested the five police officers who were charged were part of a broader plot in which corrupt officers stole money and drugs, conducted illegal searches and fabricated evidence without fear of getting caught.

Four of Friday's shooting victims were found in yards, and the fifth in a street. Police identified those killed as Dannaer Fields, 49, Bobby Clark, 54, and William Allen, 31. Fields was found wounded about 1 a.m. Friday, Clark was found in a street about an hour later, and Allen was discovered in the yard of a funeral home about 8:30 a.m., though investigators believe he was shot much earlier.

Minutes after Fields was found, police found two men with gunshot wounds in another yard two blocks away. They were taken to hospitals in critical condition but were expected to survive, police said. Willingham said those men described the shooter as being white.

Police Capt. Steve Odom said in his 30 years with the police department, he'd never seen so many shootings happen in such a short time.

Walker said detectives interviewed people Friday afternoon in the neighborhoods where the shootings happened and believe a white man driving a white pickup truck may have been involved.

Tulsa City Councilor Jack Henderson urged people to be cautious but not let "some crazy, deranged person mess up their weekend."

"There's no need to become a vigilante," Henderson said, adding that he has been assured police are working on the case as a "24/7 round-the-clock deal."

North Miami Teen Stabbed Mother To Death, Threw House Party While Body Decomposed In Next Room

It takes a special kind of kid to throw a house party while the mother they murked rots in the next room.

Kit Darrant, a 16-year-old student at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School, told investigators he killed his mother, Renette Emile, 35, because he was angry at her for scolding him about staying out late on a week night.

Then, according to a Miami-Dade police arrest affidavit, he cleaned up the blood, sprinkled her body with deodorizers and laundry detergent and wrapped it in bedsheets.

That was March 27.

Four days later, he threw a party.

For eight days, police said Darrant took care of his 3-year-old brother at their apartment in the sprawling Jade Winds complex near North Miami, coming and going.

When relatives called Kit told them his mother couldn’t come to the phone. But eventually his aunt became suspicious.

According to the Miami-Dade arrest affidavit, Darrant and his mother quarreled about his late hours.

He said he was angry and decided to kill her when she went to bed. He waited, then attacked her by wrapping his hands around her bare neck and choking her until she lost consciousness, the police report said. But his mother, who was face down, would not go easily.

Realizing that she was still breathing, he went into the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife, returned to the bedroom and stabbed her in the back of the neck, police said. She was still breathing, so Darrant turned her over and stabbed her repeatedly in the chest and arms until she was dead.

His baby brother was sleeping in the next room.

Afterward, Darrant wiped the blood from the knife, removed his soaked clothing and went to sleep, police said.

The next morning, he cleaned up the bedroom covered the body and tried to hide the smell as the body decomposed, authorities said.

Over the next few days, neighbors and security guards at the gated complex noticed Darrant driving his mother’s car at all hours. He played his music loudly and kids were going in and out.

After more than a week, Rena Emile became alarmed and she and a friend drove to the complex. She told the employee in the guardhouse she had a feeling that something was wrong.

“They told me they saw him driving her car with the baby inside and they thought it was odd,” she said.

Even before Emile and her friend entered the apartment, they were immediately hit by the smell.

“It was filthy dirty,’’ Emile said, shivering at the memory. “Me and my girlfriend kicked the door down. We knew right away.”

Darrant returned to the complex as police arrived. He said nothing as he was whisked away, Emile said.

Friends and family said Darrant had been in and out of trouble and that his mother was threatening to put him in a boot camp.

“It was normal teenager stuff, like not following the rules,” said Emile, who said she spoke to her sister frequently.

Despite the mother-son conflicts, Emile said her sister never once mentioned that Darrant was violent or threatened her in any way.

Police, who obtained a search warrant Thursday, visited the apartment earlier this year for a domestic disturbance and reckless driving. Darrant was arrested for trespassing in 2010, police said.

Renette Emile worked as a security guard at Jade Winds up until a couple of months ago, her sister said, adding that she was disturbed that fellow security guards didn’t notice something was amiss after seeing her nephew driving his mother’s car with his brother inside.

Neighbors, she said, noticed a foul odor emanating from the apartment, but also didn’t report anything.

“The neighbors said they saw him coming and going and hanging with friends,” Emile said. “I can’t believe that people thought it was odd and never said anything.”

“I know him, but I didn’t think he would do something like this,” said a fellow student.

“This is really a shock,” said another student who has known him since middle school.

An 11- year old boy (name withheld) was arrested yesterday for armed robbery.

The boy, with a gang of at least 20 robbers, raided several streets in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, southsouth Nigeria, dispossessing people, especially ladies, of their handsets, necklaces and handbags.

“They started robbing people from Atamunu Street to Mayne Avenue, Okpo Ene Atu and escaped through Target Street to Bogobiri, where I suspect they went to sell their stolen items,” Glory Eyo, a civil servant, whose handset was snatched by the gang told our correspondent.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the robbers were armed with guns and machetes and started the operation at about 3 p.m. They went from one street to another unchallenged and snatched about 40 handsets.

Eyewitnesses said those who attempted to stop them were attacked.

“When my sister told me her phone had been snatched by a gang of young robbers, I went outside and I saw them moving towards Mayne Avenue from Okpo Ene. I ran after them and when I got close and shouted at them to stop, one of them pointed gun at me and said, ‘I will shoot you if you come closer’. So I had to retreat,” John Ekong told our correspondent.

The gang ended their operation at Atu by Goldie, where they picked second hand bags being sold by a lady, Fostina Thompson. By that time people had mobilised and given them a hot chase. While others escaped, the youngster was caught by the mob.

“When we went after them, they fled for safety at Target Street. While some escaped through the back streets, I caught the boy when he wanted to enter Mary Magdaline Street. I put a stud on him and he stumbled and the knife fell from his hand,” Ebayi Oden, who caught the suspected kid robber said.

The robber had a deep machete cut at the back of his head and was bleeding profusely.

He was about to be set ablaze by the mob when police from the Atakpa Police Station arrived and took him away.

The boy confessed that the phones they steal are sold to a baba at Bogobiri, a community where the Hausas dwell in Calabar.

Rothschilds eye cross-Channel unity

The Rothschild family plans to secure “long-term control” over its international banking empire by merging its French and British assets into a single entity and implementing a new form of governance that provides immunity from hostile takeover.

The historic reorganisation will reunite the shareholdings of the French and English sides of the family into a single company, listed in Paris.

The bank has made a series of incremental changes in recent years in an attempt to simplify its structure. But people close to the family said it now wanted a “big bang” to make its global operations more efficient. The changes will also “significantly enhance” its capital position ahead of the implementation of the stricter Basel III regulatory requirements.

David de Rothschild, who will be chairman of the merged group, said that the changes would “allow the bank to better meet the requirements of globalisation in general and in our competitive environment in particular, while ensuring my family’s control over the long term”.

Mr de Rothschild is the great-great-great-grandson of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, founder of the dynasty in Frankfurt, and is also descended from his son Baron James de Rothschild, who established a bank in Paris in 1812.

The British branch of the dynasty traces its roots to 1798, when another of Mayer’s sons, 21-year-old Nathan Mayer Rothschild, arrived in England from Germany to start a textile business. With a Channel blockade making exports difficult, Nathan turned to London’s financial markets to make his fortune.

Two years ago Rothschild appointed a non-family member, Nigel Higgins, as chief executive for the first time in its 213-year history.

Mr Higgins will be joint chief executive of the merged entity, alongside Olivier Pécoux, head of Paris Orléans, a listed French group that acts as a holding vehicle for the Rothschild Group.

Paris Orléans, which has a market value of €540m, will be the vehicle for bringing together the British and French entities. The family will also implement a limited partnership structure that acts as a safeguard against takeovers, similar to ones used by Hermès, the luxury goods group, and Michelin, the tyremaker.

The Rothschild family is offering to buy out minority shareholders in Paris Orléans, who own about 30 per cent of the stock. They are offering €17 a share, compared with a €16.31 closing price on Wednesday. Allianz, a key shareholder, said it would remain a long-term investor.

Nigeria is one of the world's major oil producers, but the Niger Delta remains one of the poorest regions


Hundreds of Nigerian protesters blocked waterways in the Niger Delta to prevent Shell workers from reaching oil rigs.

One protester said they wanted to remind Shell of its responsibilities to the local Nembe Island community, which needs electricity and other amenities.

Later in the afternoon, a local chief ordered the protest to end and the release of some workers on board three Shell boats blocked by the protesters.

The oil giant has denied to the BBC that anyone was kidnapped.

Nigeria is one of the world's major oil producers, but the oil-producing Niger Delta region remains one of the country's poorest and least developed regions.

For several years, bombings and kidnappings by militants in the Niger Delta - fighting for more rights and a share of oil wealth for local people - paralysed the oil industry.

Nearly three years ago, most militants accepted a government amnesty, but the BBC's Abdul Muhammed Isa in Port Harcourt says four soldiers and four policemen were killed by unidentified gunmen in the creeks around Nembe Island last month.
'Improving lives'

Shell has four flow stations and two oil rigs in Nembe Island - one of the largest communities in the oil-producing zones of Bayelsa state where about one million people live, our reporter says.

Youth leader Jonathan Omongu told the BBC Tuesday's action was organised as a warning to Shell.

Nengi James, a Nembe chief and chairman of the area's oil and gas committee, told the BBC that the protest followed a meeting on Monday between the community and Shell that ended in deadlock.

He said that, despite the area's oil wealth, the community has little to show for it and the residents want Shell to provide electricity, water and schools.

Later on in the day, the chief told the BBC he had ordered the protesters to free the Shell workers on board the boats blocked by the protesters in the morning.

According to the Reuters news agency, 14 members of Shell staff were on the boats earlier in the day.

"No production was affected. No-one was kidnapped or seized," a Shell spokesman told the BBC.

In a statement, Shell said it would continue to work to help improve the lives of the Nembe community which had already "resulted in the implementation of many projects in the area".

The Irish Masses win Round 1

The Saturday deadline for the Irish masses to register for new property taxes, new water taxes, and various other new taxes has come and gone. The Irish masses have given the bankers a bloody nose. (For those of you in the USA, Irish houses don't yet have water meters like yours does.)

However this was only Round 1.

The bankers will win, because the masses do not support a public central bank. In all those protest marches with their hand-held signs and posters, do you see one sign that calls for a public central bank?

Until a nation gets a public bank, all protests are simply a means for the masses to blow off steam. All “reforms” are simply maneuvers in the shell game. All political parties are simply distractions. Poverty, debt, and unemployment will continue to worsen. Each coalition of politicians will say, “Elect us, for we will stand against the bankers!” -- but they always do an about-face as soon as they get power. This is a standard game in all nations that have private central banks. ("Change you can believe in!" And it's natural, since the masses will not listen to me unless I promise to make things better for the masses, and the bankers will not support me unless I actually make things worse.

Even if this issue proves to be the end of the Fine Gael majority (as Margaret Thatcher’s Poll Tax eventually undid the Conservative majority in England), the bankers will simply put in a new coalition. When Blair got in with Labour, he was even worse than the Conservatives (just as Obama is worse than Bush.) Each new leader promises “hope and change," and is worse than his predecessor. This will continue as long as private bankers remain in control.

Any public figure who does not discuss the need for public central banking is a fraud. Yesterday the bankers installed George Galloway as MP for Bradford England. Galloway's tirades against the wars and against Israel divert public attention from the true source of the problem. Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter says Sinn Féin voted to increase the household tax in Northern Ireland, and are therefore hypocrites. If that is true, then I am not surprised. In Ireland, Sinn Féin sat in the fence until a week ago.

The United Left Alliance has five seats in the Dail, and has called for a boycott – but they too are frauds. Unless they call for public central banks, they are simply holding out for special favors from the private bankers. Same with Sinn Féin.

Brazil has one of the strongest economies in the world, and accounts for almost 80 percent of South America’s economy. Brazil’s central bank is government-owned, but the bank bureaucrats are almost as bad as the private bankers that control the West. Still, it is better than what we have here.

Popular financial blogs pretend to question the bankers, but they delete all reader comments about public central banking, since such references would stop the mindless chatter. Everyone wants to argue about the symptoms while ignoring the disease.

Irish politicians were among the first to submit to the Troika. This made the Troika overconfident. Their servants in the Dail (Irish parliament) screwed up. They confused the masses, saying people could only register online for the new property taxes and water taxes (starting with the householder fee), while also saying (falsely) that they have already received millions of registrations by regular post. The politicians didn't even bother to make sure the online registration system worked properly. Even if people wanted to register, they could not log on. That's carelessness.

The Irish media screwed up by saying that most people have not registered. The media forgot to use standard divide-and conquer techniques, saying that every county has registered except YOURS. Everyone has registered except YOU, and the government is coming after you!

The Catholic Church screwed up by not drilling into the masses that they must “render unto Caesar.” Last Tuesday in Letterkenny (County Donegal), one priest, Brian O’Fearragh, led a protest against tax registration. (Doubtless the Church will slap down O’Fearragh harder than it did Bishop Richard Williamson for questioning the Jewish holo-hoax.)

Like I said, this was only Round 1. The bankers will learn. They will not be so careless. They will tell Irish politicians, media bosses, and Church bosses, “If you cannot get the job done, then we will replace you immediately!”

No doubt the bankers have flown consultants to Ireland from throughout Europe and North American to instruct Irish politicians, media bosses, and Catholic bosses on how to properly crush the masses. Ireland had property taxes until 1997. Ireland will have them again.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Viewers got a first glimpse of Whitney Houston's upcoming film Monday when NBC's "Today" show premiered a trailer for the much-awaited release, and a fuller clip debuted on Yahoo! Movies.

A remake of the 1976 original, "Sparkle" stars Houston as the mother of three girls who form a singing group and struggle with fame and drug addiction. The trailer displayed the daughters, including "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, in performance. Houston is prominent throughout, at one point singing the classic gospel song "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."

She also tells one of her daughters: "I always knew you had the gift. It makes me feel like I did something right. Don't lose it."

Debra Martin Chase, who is a producer of the film, said she had mixed emotions with the trailer's release; the movie is scheduled for release Aug. 17.

"On the one hand, I'm so excited about the movie and we're really happy with how it turned out," she said in a phone interview Monday. "(But) just to have it said yet again that this is Whitney's last performance, it's hard. It's hard."

Houston is listed as the executive producer of the movie, which had already finished filming in Detroit when the superstar died Feb. 11 at 48 in Beverly Hills, Calif., on the eve of the Grammy Awards. An autopsy has shown she accidentally drowned in the bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors.

There is no mention made of drugs in the trailer, and Chase declined to say whether it would be a focal part of the movie as it was in the original, saying she didn't want to talk specifically about the plotlines until closer to the movie's release date.

She also added that the movie was not altered to increase Houston's time in the film in the wake of her death.

"She is an integral, very much an integral part of the movie, but she's not one of the girls," she said. "She plays an important role, she's throughout the movie, but she's not one of the main characters."

Chase echoed other people involved with the movie who praised Houston's professionalism on the set. The movie was seen as a comeback vehicle for the star, whose career had waned over the years due to battles with drugs and alcohol.

"She was healthy, happy, on time every day, hung out on set when she wasn't working because she loved the cast," said Chase, who also declined to talk about the circumstances of Houston's death. "She had fun, her spirit buoyed everybody every day."

Houston had worked to get "Sparkle" to the screen for 12 years. It was her first movie since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife" and 20 years removed from her debut in the blockbuster movie "The Bodyguard," which was re-released for one night last week.

"Whitney loved this movie very much. This was her idea," Chase said. "The great thing for me as her friend and her producing partner is that this movie will be an essential part of her legacy. ... It's the best performance of her life; she knew it at the time. She looked beautiful on camera and she enjoyed every minute making the movie."

Dangote Cement plans London listing

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, plans to list his $11bn cement business on the London Stock Exchange next year and loosen his personal control over the company.

The Nigerian industrialist, who has capitalised on the continent’s booming demand for building materials, told the Financial Times he intends to free-float a 20 per cent stake in Dangote Cement to finance its rapid expansion. It will be the first listing of one of Mr Dangote’s companies outside Nigeria.

“We want to list in London next year,” he said in an interview in Lagos. “By then the upside to our business will be much bigger than today.”

Already the largest cement producer in sub-Saharan Africa, Dangote Cement is more than doubling capacity this year to 21m metric tonnes, and wants to reach 43m tonnes in 2015. Besides Nigeria, where it has three plants and 70 per cent market share, the company has contracts to construct factories in eight African countries, from Senegal to South Africa to Ethiopia.

The expansion comes at a time of fast growth in Africa, with the IMF forecasting that regional economies will expand by 5.75 per cent this year. This is boosting spending on infrastructure and housing and driving demand for cement.

Dangote Cement’s net profit in 2011 is expected to be $790m on revenues of $1.5bn, according to guidance filed at the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Mr Dangote, whose net worth is $12bn according to Forbes, said he wanted to quadruple profits within four years and turn the business into the world’s most profitable cement company.

Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan have been appointed as co-leads for the London share issue. Mr Dangote said that the company was on track to meet the stringent corporate governance requirements for a premium listing, and that he would give up his current role as chairman.

“My plan is to have different faces [on the board],” he said. “The face of the chairman will not be Aliko Dangote, it will be somebody else, a professional who is well-respected within investment circles.”

At the same time, Mr Dangote’s conglomerate, Dangote Group, is changing focus. It plans to sell 80 per cent stakes in its food business, which include salt, sugar, flour, rice and pasta.

Besides cement, the group will concentrate on three other main sectors, Mr Dangote said. The mining arm will focus on coal, iron and bitumen. The petrochemical business will produce methanol, polyethylene, and fertiliser.

The infrastructure business plans to produce and sell 2,000MW of electricity in Nigeria – about half of the country’s current capacity – when power sector deregulation is completed, and to build a $1.5bn port, “the biggest deep-sea port in West Africa”, near Lagos.
