Farrakhan, Winfrey Visit Haiti on Separate Trips

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan started a five-day trip to Haiti on Sunday, arriving just ahead of fellow Chicagoan Oprah Winfrey as they make separate trips to the poor Caribbean country.

Farrakhan told reporters at the airport that he will be exploring ways his organization can help Haiti rebuild from the devastating 2010 earthquake.

He said he intends to "listen, learn and share," and is particularly interested in learning more about Voodoo, the religion widely practiced in the country.

"I have longed throughout my life to set my foot in the sacred soil of Haiti," Farrakhan said.

Haitian Foreign Minister Laurent Lamorthe greeted Farrakhan at the airport, and the Nation of Islam leader was expected to meet later in the week with President Michel Martelly.

Authorities hustled the journalists out of the airport after the news conference so they could not cover Winfrey's arrival.

Winfrey was expected to visit a settlement camp for displaced people run by Hollywood actor Sean Penn and his aid group J/P HRO on Monday. She was also expected to meet with fashion designer Donna Karan, who has celebrated the work of Haiti's artisans through her Urban Zen Foundation since the quake.

Martelly has said he would meet with Winfrey on Monday. He said he hopes she will serve as a goodwill ambassador for Haiti and help bring aid to the country.

Israel Acts to Curb Illegal Immigration From Africa

JERUSALEM — The Israeli government on Sunday announced plans to spend $160 million on efforts to stem the growing number of Africans who enter the country illegally, seeking jobs and political asylum. The money will go toward work on an Egyptian border fence that is already under construction, an expansion of detention centers and increased policing of companies that hire undocumented workers.

“If need be, we will close businesses so that the enterprise known as the State of Israel does not close,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after a cabinet meeting that focused on the issue.

Over the past six years, about 50,000 Africans, mostly from Eritrea and Sudan, have trekked across the Sinai into Israel, some of them working in hotels and on construction sites, others living in rundown urban neighborhoods, unable to find work and relying on refugee agencies.

All well-off countries face the challenge of how to handle poor foreign migrants and how much credence to give their accounts of political persecution. But the situation in Israel is complicated by Jewish history and has led to a national debate. On the one hand, this is a small country that wishes to maintain a strong Jewish majority. On the other, the Jews’ past of eviction and persecution makes some here argue that Israel should have special sensitivity for those fleeing prejudice and conflict.

Mr. Netanyahu said that the overwhelming number of Africans who slip into Israel are not political refugees, but are looking to improve their economic status. He said they pose difficulties for the people they settle among. Poorer Israelis, in particular, resent the Africans’ arrival and compete with them for jobs.

“We hear the outcry coming from Israel’s cities,” he said. “We will continue to care for refugees, but they make up a minimal part of the human wave. Entire populations are starting to move, and if we don’t act to stop this we will be flooded.”

Refugee advocacy groups in Israel contend that Mr. Netanyahu is wrong, that the majority of those who arrive here are fleeing civil wars or political persecution.

Mr. Netanyahu plans to visit several African countries early next year and said he would raise the issue of repatriating the refugees.

The influx of Africans began in 2005 after the Egyptian police attacked Sudanese refugees who were camped out in Cairo and demanded asylum. More than 20 people were killed, and word spread that Israel would provide them a better welcome and more job opportunities.

The Israeli government hopes that the fence being built along the Egyptian border will keep out most infiltrators. The demands for a fence have grown in the past year with the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and the increase in tensions with Cairo that followed his ouster.

Three months ago, demonstrators in Cairo ransacked part of the Israeli Embassy, leading the Israeli government to airlift its diplomatic personnel from Egypt. In August, infiltrators from the Sinai killed eight Israelis in the popular Red Sea resort of Eilat; in fighting afterward, Israeli troops killed five Egyptian security personnel.

But both governments say they wish to maintain ties, and Israel said it would send a new ambassador to Cairo on Monday. No new permanent home for the Israeli Embassy in Cairo has been found.

The militants said they were on their way to Abuja to protest what they called non-implementation of the amnesty programme and to also ask the Federal Government to begin the implementation or else they would take arms and return to the creeks.

With solar companies like Solyndra going bankrupt, some analysts are saying that the environmentally friendly ways of producing electricity are too costly.  They claim that to mass produce electricity via solar panels takes far too much land and therefore is not really feasible.

But there is an alternative that’s been hidden from the public for over 30 years.

In the 1970s and 80s, there was a guy in our church that worked for a major technology company.  He had a PhD in physics and worked on solar energy.  He not only told me that the technology to supply affordable solar energy to every home is possible, he showed me.

Richard invited my wife and I over for dinner once and to show me his house.  He had a very nice three level home with lots of windows.  The very center of house was open from the ground floor up so that people could see and converse from the first, second and third floors. The livable square footage in his house was almost three times what my house was.

It was not uncommon for my summer electric bills to run around $350 per month trying to keep the house comfortable in the Arizona sun.  Other homes the size of Richard’s had summer electric bills easily exceeding $1000 per month.  Richard told me that his summer electric bills ranged from -$150 to -$400 per month.

His small solar panel system was so efficient that about 9-10 months a year, it produced more than his household (wife and three daughters) could use.  The excess power was run through a meter and sold back to the utility company.

He then took me to his back yard to show me the solar panel array that he built.  It wasn’t nearly as large as I expected.  As Richard proudly showed me the solar unit, he explained that one thing that made it more efficient than most is that he had a solar light detector that helped keep the panels lined up with the sun’s rays to keep them running at peak capacity.  As sun moved across the sky, the panels also changed angle to follow it.

I asked him how much it cost to build and install his solar panel system and he told me that for a house like his, it would pay for itself in less than a year.  For smaller homes he estimated it would take about 2 years to pay for itself.  His solar units were unlike any that I’ve seen on homes then or since.  The home solar units in use today still do not use the same high efficiency levels as the one He built.

However, he told me that the technology he used would probably never see public or commercial use because it would cost the power companies millions of dollars in lost revenue.  It was just like the carburetor my neighbor built for the Chevy Vega years ago.  He worked at the GM proving grounds east of town and he developed a fuel efficient carburetor that in town got 100 miles per gallon of fuel.  He told me it would never see the light of day and that it would sit on the GM shelves with all of the other energy saving devices they created because the auto industry was married to the oil industry.

My friend Richard told me that the energy companies work very closely with all major technology companies to ensure that they both continue to make money.  Then Richard told me that if a company mass produced solar units like, that it would bring the cost way down from what he spent out of pocket.  Mass production would make the solar units much more economically feasible for many homeowners, but the utilities won’t allow it to happen.

If that was the technology that existed over 30 years ago, then who’s to say that it hasn’t been improved, refined and made much more affordable today.  Can you imagine selling electricity back to the power company most of the year?  The technology is out there, but I doubt if we’ll ever see it in our lifetime because of the utility companies.

Niger Delta to get solar engineering for rural electrification

THE Federal Government has given its approval to the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to begin the demonstration of solar panel, solar engineering and solar energy for rural electrification of locally produced solar panels in the Niger Delta.

Speaking to the press at the Nigeria Energy and Power Summit (NEPS), the Director General of the agency, Prof. Olusegun Adewoye, said: "Right now, the Federal Executive Council has approved our paper on demonstration of solar panel, solar engineering and solar energy, to demonstrate rural electrification in Niger Delta. Within a space of four months, we would have finished installing all the solar panels in those places. It is a pilot scheme. We have 7.5 megawatts capacity and this is a small job to demonstrate.

According to him, NASENI was using the plant to demonstrate that solar panel manufacturing business was real and possible in Nigeria and hope government will now put money in this plant and increase its capacity saying that "we also hope that the private sector will help in developing the plant. We are also advising states to setup their solar projects because NASENI can do a business plan for them to produce locally."

He said the agency was proposing the establishment of a solar panel production plant in each geo-political zones capable of producing 25MWs worth of solar panels yearly. This, according to him would be established on a public-private partnership system (PPP) with federal and state governments providing catalytic support.

Prof. Adewoye explained that energy is central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts affecting all aspects of development and none of the Millennium Development Goals can be met without major improvement in the quality and quantity of energy services in developing countries, while describing lack of access to modern energy services as a major obstacle for people to move away from poverty and upgrade their quality of life.

The NASENI boss said the Karshi Solar Panel Plant is stocked with over 1,000 solar plants of various ratings in addition to semi-knocked down components and large stock of raw materials to roll out more solar panels of various specifications.

He further said the agency has successfully established a 7.5MW solar panel manufacturing plant in Karshi, Abuja with a production-line to facilitate a smooth roll-out of solar panels. The facility is one of only three available in Africa with the others located in South Africa and Senegal mainly for export.

Drone Warfare, President Obama and the French Revolution

Forecasting a future of robotic warfare in which perverted science is put at the service of its Empire, the U.S. has built 60 bases around the world for its unmanned, remotely controlled killer drone warplanes. And more bases are under construction.

“Run by the military, the Central Intelligence Agency, and their proxies, these bases, are the backbone of a new robotic way of war,” writes Nick Turse, an investigative journalist for AlterNet and TomDispatch.

The bases “are also the latest development in a long-evolving saga of American power projection abroad---in this case, remote-controlled strikes anywhere on the planet with a minimal foreign ‘footprint’ and little accountability,” Turse points out.

He notes that there may be even more than 60 bases since the Pentagon has dropped a “cloak of secrecy” over its operations. With the recent murder of American citizen Anwar al-Aulaqi in Yemen, the drones are now assassinating suspects in no fewer than six countries, Turse says.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post also reports the Obama Pentagon is building a constellation of secret drone bases in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula to attack al-Qaeda affiliates in Somalia and Yemen.

A number of the drone bases are located in the U.S., centered at Creech Air Force base outside Las Vegas, Nev., where “pilots” seated in front of computer screens can direct the unmanned drones and command them to launch a Hellfire missile on a suspect in Afghanistan, 7,500 miles away.

At Ft. Benning, Ga., a new, advanced drone is being tested that the Washington Post reports is the next step toward a future in which drones will “hunt, identify, and kill the enemy based on calculations made by software, not decisions made by humans.”

In the first 10 months of his administration, President Obama vastly increased the number of drone attacks in the Middle East, assigning the CIA the role of launching them in Pakistan. It should be noted that Obama is a former CIA employee and approved an Agency drone strike during his first week in office.

The New Yorker magazine reported in its edition of October 25, 2009, that since taking office up to that time President Obama sanctioned at least 41 CIA drone strikes in Pakistan that killed between 326 and 538 people, many of them, critics say, “innocent bystanders, including children.”

In fact, the first two strikes took place on Jan. 23, the President’s third day in office and the second of these hit the wrong house, that of a pro-government tribal leader that killed his entire family, including three children, one just five years of age.

The magazine noted that when another suspect was attacked while sunning himself on his roof, the missile also demolished his house wiping out his entire family.

The killing of 25 Pakistan soldiers last week by American aircraft only reinforces the belief that U.S. intelligence agencies are not to be trusted in deciding who is the enemy any more than they could provide reliable information on whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

The drone planes, particularly those named Predator and Reaper, have become so popular in the Pentagon defense contractors can’t keep up keep up with the demand. In fact, the Pentagon plans to buy 700 new medium and large unmanned aircraft systems over the next decade, reliable sources say. What’s more, the government plans “new generations of tiny ‘nano’ drones, which can fly after their prey like a killer bee through an open window,” The New Yorker says.

Suspects targeted for killing by drones are first identified by the CIA and military intelligence agencies. Who knows what legal standards, if any, are used? Is a man a terrorist who takes up arms against troops who occupy his country? None of the suspects ever get to retain a lawyer. None of them ever see a judge or get a chance to plead to a jury.

In short, President Obama’s enemies are being assassinated with absolutely no pretense of a legal proceeding. Webster’s dictionary defines assassination as “to kill suddenly or secretively, especially to murder a politically prominent person” and also “to destroy or harm treacherously and viciously,” which describes the Pentagon-CIA attacks perfectly.

This is just one more aspect of the American empire’s mass arrests of innocent individuals who are never brought to trial. At Guantanamo, for example, some 800 prisoners have been arrested and tortured and over a ten-year period only seven have been brought to trial. That’s not a judicial system. It’s a non-judicial system. And the drone warfare campaign is also non-judicial.

At least in the Terror spawned by the French Revolution, the accused came before a sort of mob called the Paris Revolutionary Tribunal, which is more that can be said for today's drone strike victims. In Paris, the accused could not hire a defense lawyer or call witnesses and the only sentence that could be passed was death. This same despicable standard is being applied in today’s drone attacks authorized by President Obama, who has turned back the clock of international jurisprudence by 200 years.Why should future historians not refer to him as the American Robespierre? #
