Diezani denies Vienna mansion allegation

Minister of Petroleum   Resources, Mrs. Diezani                Alison-Madueke has denied allegations that she bought a 20 million mansion in Vienna, Austria.





An Austrian newspaper, Heute reported that the minister allegedly bought the mansion even as millions of Nigerians go to bed on empty stomachs.

But the minister through the spokesman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Levi Ajuonuma dismissed the story as “idle gossip”.

Dr. Ajuonuma who is group general manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the NNPC,  said in a chat with newsmen on Friday that “As professionals, we know that comment is free but facts are sacred. Now if you are saying in this age and time that somebody bought a 20m euro mansion in a very conservative city like Vienna, then you must be able to produce the picture of the so called mansion, the transfer wire number for the said purchase, as well as other details of the transaction. 20m euro is no small money anywhere in the world”.

He recalled that a similar unsubstantiated story was culled from the Jakarta Post and spread by the online news media in September accusing the NNPC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources of planning to invest in a multibillion-naira refinery project in Indonesia.

"Interestingly when the Jakarta Post retracted their phantom story and apologised on front page to the NNPC for the fake story, the online media never bothered to publish same because they are usually not interested in facts," he said.

He implored newspaper editors and gate keepers to fact check news stories from foreign tabloids and online media in good time for publication.  ``With the aid of forensic accounting, it doesn’t take rocket science to track any financial transaction. You cannot conduct a 20million euro deal anywhere in the world, without attracting red flag from relevant international agencies, ’’ he said.  Ajuonuma assured that the Minister of Petroleum Resources is not perturbed by such publications, noting that the focus now is on ensuring the full activation of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration Transformation Agenda in the oil and gas industry.

Irked by recent reports alleging that she acquired a 20 million Euro mansion in Vienna, Austria, the minister of petroleum resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has petitioned the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).


The terse petition to the director-general of the intelligence agency, which was dispatched over the weekend, requests the NIA to launch a thorough inquest into the source of what she described as a “negative character onslaught”. The petition letter, dated 11/11/2011 and entitled “Phantom Allegation by Heute Newspaper” was personally signed by the minister and copied President Goodluck Jonathan.


The letter in which Alison-Madueke implored the NIA DG to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves reads in part: “I write to draw your attention to a recent report published by the Vienna-based Heute newspaper alleging the purchase of a 20 million Euro mansion in an undisclosed location in Vienna by my humble self. The story which is clearly concocted to portray Nigeria’s public officials as corrupt and prodigal was scripted as well to denigrate and embarrass the federal government of Nigeria.”


The letter which was obtained by LEADERSHIP further reads: “In the light of the above, it is my wish that you use your good offices to cause a detailed investigation of the mischievous story with a view to ascertaining the real motive behind this unwholesome article.’’


The NIA is Nigeria’s foreign equivalent of the State Security Service (SSS) and is charged with gathering intelligence abroad for government as well as the protection of the country’s citizens and other overseas interest. Meanwhile, a source within the presidency yesterday hinted that President Jonathan, irritated by the spate of phantom foreign media-induced attacks targeted at Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, has ordered the NIA DG as well as the Nigerian ambassador to Austria to dig into the matter, with a view to ascertaining the veracity or otherwise of the said report.


It was gathered that  legal action may be instituted in Austria against the publishers of Heute once it is established that the report was fabricated to ridicule a Nigerian minister.


“The presidency is approaching the matter with an open mind. But let us look at this case from the standpoint of common sense. Heute is based in Vienna which is the location of the said mansion, yet Heute claims it culled or obtained the report from a Nigerian newspaper which it has so far refused to name.


“The question is: what stopped Heute from going to the land office or county registry in Vienna to obtain documents and even photographs of the so-called mansion? We really need to send a strong warning to these so-called foreign tabloids,” the source who pleaded anonymity said.


Recently, the Jarkata Post similarly published a report stating that the NNPC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources were billed to sign a $2.68 billion deal for the construction of three refineries in Indonesia. The report, which was widely circulated online, caused a major stir in the country amid denials by the NNPC as Nigerians were bewildered by government’s presumed insensitivity of such project. However, days later, the Jarkata Post recanted the story and apologised to the minister of petroleum resources and the NNPC.

I share the author's sense of risk, but I'm not filled by hopelessness as he is. Not that I can deny that despair about the state of this continent washes over me ever so often. I’m out of here.” Then I find myself remembering that scene in Blood Diamond where Danny(Leo DiCaprio) talks about leaving Africa. The colonel takes sand and pours it over Danny’s hand and says “This red earth, it’s in our skin. The Shona say the color comes from all the blood that’s been spilled fighting over the land. This is home. You’ll never leave Africa.” I’ll never leave either. Travel to other countries, yes. I enjoy learning about and experiencing other cultures, but this is home. Most of us will never leave. Despite everything, I still believe that Africa is the land of tomorrow. We have riches like oil, gold, diamonds, uranium etc., but these are not our most precious resource. Our people are. We need to learn how to harvest our various talents and work together for the betterment of all. If we allow ourselves to be filled with a sense of hopelessness, then we’ve already lost that bright future that I really do believe can be ours.

Side note: whenever I see anything to do with Ghana, I think of its 2010 World Cup football team. That match against the USA was one of the best of the tournament. Pity that they were robbed in their following match. Nevertheless, they made Africa proud. The Black Stars.

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, on Saturday decried the high rate at which Nigerians opt for foreign education.

Apart from undermining the nation’s education sector, Fashola said, the trend had dire consequences on the nation’s economy and had negatively impacted the country’s trade balance with receiving countries.

Speaking at a youth stakeholders’ forum organised by After Graduate Development Centre (AGDC) in partnership with the Lagos State Government to mobilise and sensitise youths on national development, he explained that the capital spent abroad by Nigerians going to Europe or elsewhere for education could have been used to develop the Nigerian economy.

The governor said there was need for a check on the trend. This, he said, could be achieved by boosting the capacity of local educational institutions, as well as the development of new ones to address the problem of the demand-supply deficit in the nation’s university system.

It will be recalled that recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Malam Lamido Sanusi, revealed that 71,000 Nigerians studying in Ghana spent N155 billion on school fees in the neighbouring country.

He said that this was much more than the N121 billion annual budget for all the federal universities and described the situation as worrisome.

" I am trying in my small way to puncture some of the fraudulent and fallacious arguments these imperialists put up to justify some of their costly adventures but which some among us who call themselves democrats, human rights activists, non-state actors, feminists and the likes, choose to buy and swallow spoon, fork and knife.

The Americans and the Europeans are in trouble and only their leaders know it. Many of the leaders and ordinary peoples of those continents have sold their souls to Satan. We live in a moral world and whether we believe it or not, there are consequences of our actions. The people have squandered the resources most of which they stole from other people through outright theft, piracy, unfair trade policies and living a life of insatiable greed fuelled by smart advertising in which most of their citizens, especially women, buy what they do not need but which they have been led to believe they must possess if they want to live a good life and be like the Jones across the street. Payback time for a life of greed and living on credit has come.

The politicians of those countries have unsuccessfully tried so many things for their countries to remain afloat but no dice. Imperialism in which an imperial power extracts the resources of client states is not bringing as much money and wealth and with as much speed as the West would like because some leaders of ‘primitive’ countries like Saddam and Gaddafi are not pliable. The West is at its wit’s end: they do not know what trick in the rule books to employ any more. The new option is therefore recourse to old-fashioned re-colonisation: re-colonise the countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia.

What strategy to adopt? Start with those countries with huge strategic resources but which have wise, intelligent, nationalistic and assertive leaders such as Saddam and Gaddafi who could act as obstacles. The calculation is that by such a strategy they can shock, destabilise, intimidate and overawe the rest. To be concluded next week."

Two-week-old baby dumped by roadside in Ekiti

A baby believed to be about two weeks old was on Tuesday found at roadside on Ekeolere Close by some residents of Moferere area of Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

The residents, who were attracted to the scene by the persistent cry of the baby, told PUNCH METRO that the baby girl was wrapped in a white shawl and was put in a small carton by the roadside close to the residence of a former state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

A resident, Taiwo Abdullahi, said the baby might have been abandoned either late on Monday or early on Tuesday.

She said the residents trooped out very early when a passer-by raised the alarm that a baby had been dumped in the neighbourhood.

Some of the residents told our correspondent that a note suspected to have been written by the baby’s mother was found in the carton.

They said from the note, the baby was born on October 23, 2011.

Good Samaritans, our correspondent gathered, administered first aid on the baby and later gave her glucose to restore her strength.

Some of those who attended to the baby said she was lucky to have survived the harsh condition.

A nurse, who declined to give her name said, “ I wish they could give me the baby to take care of. She is so beautiful. Her mother might have dumped her because of harsh economic condition but that excuse is not good enough.”

The residents said the baby was taken away by a team of policemen who were invited to the scene.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Gender Empowerment, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi, told our correspondent that the baby had been taken to the Children’s Home at Iyin-Ekiti.

The commissioner said the baby was already being taken care of by the state government.

Sources at the home said that the baby had been examined by a medical official and was found to be in good condition.

They said she would be given a name at a later date but added that her surname would be Fayemi.

Eritrea: We can't supply Somali militants weapons
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Eritrea's ambassador to Kenya said Friday that there is no proof to back allegations that Eritrea supplied three planeloads of weapons to al-Qaida-linked militants in Somalia being pursued by the Kenyan army.
Beyene Russom told The Associated Press that it would be impossible for the small, East Africa country to supply weapons because it is under a U.N. arms embargo and is being monitored by the U.S. government and the U.N.
"We can't do that because it is a very complicated operation," Russom said. "We do not have the capacity to bring three planes in two days, crossing the airspace of Djibouti, crossing the Red Sea and entering the Indian Ocean and entering Somalia airspace, unloading and flying back in this highly militarized area."

Many - including the star himself - seem convinced this is just another dramatic plot twist in a soap opera that must surely have many more seasons to run.

My own sense is that President Jacob Zuma - a ditherer when it comes to policies, but a ruthlessly efficient and experienced master in the darker arts of political survival - would not have moved against Mr Malema if he didn't have a reasonably competent strategy in place.

I would be surprised, for example, if the ongoing investigations into alleged corruption by the ANC youth league president did not start to gain momentum and traction in the days and weeks ahead.

We shall see. In the meantime, here is something I wrote for the radio immediately after yesterday's verdict was announced in Johannesburg.

Big moment
They call him Juju here…

And it's very hard to get away from him.

Julius Malema has the bling of a chubby rap star, the political subtlety of Venezuela's Huge Chavez, and the divisive powers of marmite.

To nervous whites in South Africa, he's another Robert Mugabe in the making. To middle class blacks, he's plain embarrassing. To many poor, neglected communities - he's a hero: A rags-to-riches fighter who promises an economic revolution in one of the world's most unequal societies.

But - in a packed, sweaty office lobby - the ANC announced it was pulling the plug on Juju's big adventure.

For the next five years he will be suspended from the party he first joined as a pushy kid during the last, bruising years of apartheid.

It is a big moment for South Africa - and the ANC - the ruling party that turns 100 next year and is widely believed to be losing its way.

There are three main reasons Juju is out.

First of all - he's guilty. He repeatedly violated the ANC's code of conduct. The rules are pretty clear.

Secondly - there's politics. President Jacob Zuma is running for a second term next year. Julius Malema had become a powerful, outspoken rival. Not any more.

Thirdly - there's the money. Juju's Mugabe-style rhetoric about nationalising the mines, and seizing white-owned land, has been scaring away foreign investors. One close friend of the president told me Mr Malema has become a national security risk. He has to go.

And so he has. At least, he will go if an appeal fails, as seems likely.

And suspension from the ANC may be the least of his worries. His mysteriously fancy lifestyle has been attracting a little too much attention - and now the police say they're investigating him for alleged corruption.

And so, like some gaudy soap-opera, the Malema show is coming to an end.

To some extent it's been a media creation. After all he's only the head of the youth league of the ANC. His power should be negligible.

And yet, across Africa, everyone I meet seems to have an opinion about him.

He embodies and articulates some of the confusions and contradictions of a continent that has shaken off colonialism, and embraced economic growth, only to find that the Chinese and the banks now seem to call the shots.

South Africa will be duller without him. And maybe better off. But in a country where many are losing faith in their politicians' ability to confront decades of inequality, Mr Malema is a symptom. And there will be others like him.

Nigerians witness today a dismal picture of our Democracy due to Corruption in all Arms of Government - Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Democracy apart, Good Government is vital to the survival of the common man in our emergent economy. Unless something is done urgently to check the metastasizing cancer (corruption) this society is going down through a dismal tunnel the end of which cannot be predicted. Patriotic Nigerians should engage in efforts to salvage this Democracy and avert bloody cataclysmic change, anarchy, terrorism or just break-down of State Mechanism as in Somalia. Government alone cannot fight and stem corruption within its own fold.

The recent Court arraignment of three ex-Governors by the EFCC for embezzlement of State Funds to the tune of over One Hundred Billion Naira is evidence that our Public Officers are not ready to change their corrupt ways. The accused persons, though presumed innocent showed no remorse whatsoever smiling through the process as if they were receiving an Honours Award. One of them mobilized thugs to court to harass innocent patriotic youths who were in court to watch the proceedings. Although Nigerians are aware the Agency is still sitting atop case files of many corrupt governors (and ministers), the EFCC deserves commendation for this modest effort. Less than 10 out of over 40 gubernatorial suspects and only about 3 or 4 convictions so far - that is all we've got for Nigerian and Foreign investment in the Agency (Admittedly the Agency's work has been impeded by few corrupt elements in the criminal justice system including fifth columnists within its own house) Hopefully, critics of the Agency, who allege selective prosecution would have by now seen the light.

Not to be outdone by the Executive and their Federal Counterparts, Members of the Legislative Arm of the States have been helping themselves from the kitty with the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker "carrying first" with 500 Million Naira Monthly Disbursements now under investigation. The Exclusive "Pointblank News" Report, quoted verbatim hereunder is also representative of the peculative activities of State Legislators across the country. The Report:

"The Oyo State legislature blew a whooping N121 million on a two week " legislative training "tour of the United Kingdom, abandoning victims of the recent flood that ravaged the city of Ibadan. This amount excludes the amount paid to the organizers of the “training" in London. Another drama is also unfolding. The legislators are at war with the Speaker, Jumoke Sunmonu, because she has refused to share the 20 per cent commission, she got from the travel agency which sold the tickets to them. N25 million was used to purchase return air tickets to London for the 33 lawmakers. She was the one who brokered the air ticket deal, which comes with a commission Pointblanknews.com sources hinted that each legislator got N660,000 as estacode, while accommodation was N1 million each , while the air tickets gulped N25 million for the House. It was learnt that the trip which the opposition and political observers have tagged" wasteful", was partly financed by the state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)."

The Judicial Arm's new head, Chief Justice Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon Justice Dahiru Musdapher has set up a 28-member panel to reform the judiciary. The Panel began its daily sitting on Tuesday October 19, 2011. The Chief Justice deserves commendation for taking immediate steps to examine among others, the problem of corruption in the Judiciary. But the cancer may have metastasized to unimaginable proportions. A tip of the iceberg is a report dated 26 August 2011 in Nigerian Tribune:

“FG uncovers corruption in judiciary •N106bn traced to judgment procurement •Judges own luxury houses in UK, UAE, S/Africa" The Report (verbatim):

"The Presidency appears to be in a dilemma as to the nature of its intervention in the judicial arm of government, following the submission of a secret report which indicted a number of judicial officers of monumental corruption. Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune confirmed that the government is in possession of the document which detailed lots of underhand dealings in the judiciary. It was confirmed that unethical practices, such as judgment procurement and actual instances of corruption were probed by the secret committee. According to investigations, the report, which detailed incidents in the judiciary from 2006 to 2011, confirmed that a number of judges have been named as “living above their legal means.” It was further confirmed that a number of judicial officers were linked to what was termed “judgment procurement,” which was said to have gulped about N106 billion in recent years. “The bulk of that sum has been salted away in foreign lands to procure properties in the name of fake companies, fake children, schools and fake associates,” a source privy to the document quoted the submission. “The last has not been heard of the development in the judiciary, as far as corruption is concerned. A report in the hands of the state has confirmed that some properties were bought globally, especially in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), South Africa and London. Some of the real owners are judicial personnel, whose total emolument cannot in anyway justify the purchases."

Although the Nigerian Taxpayer has been made to worry mostly about corruption in Election Petitions and Gubernatorial Embezzlement Trials, the reality is that those issues constitute less than 10 per cent of the work of the courts and are seasonal. Truth is the common man as well as the big corporations has for years complained of lack of access to justice due to judicial corruption. Even the Law Enforcement Agencies of the Government are not exempted from unjust, corrupt (sometimes illegal) orders and judgments! Perhaps the new Committee’s one-month assignment would lead the way to reducing the incidence of "judgment procurement" - a euphemism for judicial corruption but one must admit that the NJC is doing its best given the workload of Petitions arising from pervasive unethical conduct amongst Judicial Personnel.
Hon Justice Kayode Eso (of the famous Eso Judicial Reform Panel) lamented at the recent Hallmarks of Labour Awards Night held at Oriental Hotel Lagos the imminent collapse of the Justice System re-stating the strategic nature of a Reformed Judiciary to the Polity. His words: “the news that you hear about the judiciary is not palatable, as the third arm of the realm, the judiciary is the guardian of the nation, if the guardian of the nation is shaky or corrupt that will be the end of the nation. Until we put the judiciary in order nothing good will happen.”

In the circumstances, we hereby re-state our position that there is need for a comprehensive public review of Institutions and Individuals responsible for pushing Nigerians into this dismal state of affairs. Nigerians are tired of venting their anger on keyboards or just crying to Almighty God for salvation. Government should provide a non-conventional forum (other than the Internet, Newspapers or National Assembly) for expression and addressing the perennial failure of governance so that all are involved in finding solution.

The Commission of Enquiry into Election Violence and Mr. President's proposal for a single tenure for Office Holders are steps in the right direction. But these are isolated solutions by Government to government on specific issues that are seasonal. A holistic approach is needed so we don't end up duplicating efforts or implementing reforms piecemeal, in fits and starts. Besides, Nigerians (from experience) do not trust Elected Representatives to address serious issues of accountability, retribution ethics-in-Government, and social reform in any meaningful way. That will be like making our past (coup-plotter) Presidents head a Panel on the causes of political instability since independence in 1960. As the malaise of official corruption festers daily, our jobless youths, its hardest hit victims are getting restive. Their bottled social discontent and hardship will in due course find expression in a most unusual and unexpected manner on surprising targets, if nothing is done urgently. Where are the promised “dividends of Dremocracy? Nigerians have since discovered even before the above-cited Reports that this Democracy is indeed nothing but a scam!

The Nigerian state security services has detained a youth organizer who was a fervent supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan during Nigeria's last presidential election.

Wale Ajani was arrested after he granted a press interviews claiming that the government's proposed plan to cut fuel subsidies was "evil". He remains detained by the SSS after he honored an invitation by the agency to discuss his involvement in a planned hunger strike by youth groups slated for November 11 2011.

The SSS is famous for harassing civil rights activists, bloggers and journalists critical of the Nigerian government.
