So many things wrong at the club. I read that Varane was angry that he was dropped against Man City, made a complaint to Murtough, and then refused to play against Newcastle.
Instead of the players bought for their leadership and positive attitude to impart those qualities on the other players, it is the players with negative attitudes that are pulling others to the dark side. |

Leyqute: Fair.
He has made tf mistakes for which he should be blamed. But if we had a good structure etc, he won't be in the position to make those mistakes.
That's my point. I never said otherwise. I have always been pushing for a good support structure for the manager with quality DoF and scouting. He was the one who put himself in harm's way when he started hiring mainly from players that he knew. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 2:59pm On Nov 03, 2023 |
Leyqute: Of course, he shoulders blames for the wacky transfer window.
What I'm saying is that if things were done in the right way, that tf window wouldn't have happened. It's like hiring Paul Mitchell as doF and allowing him to coach the players from time to time. O wrong.
There are many ways to fail at building a good team. I don't get your point. If you agree he shoulders blame, then we have no disagreement. I never said we should not improve club structure and get a proper DoF. What i don't agree with is this narrative that ETH has not made mistakes. He has made a number of huge mistakes, and he should bear his own cross. Murtough and co will bear their own cross too. There are enough crosses to share around. |

Leyqute: This is like blaming Rangnick for being a bad manager when he is known as a renowned technical director.
ETH is only good at being a coach, why are you blaming him for being incompetent at player transfers? I am blaming him for not knowing his limitations. Whatever happened with the Rangnick dismissal it is clear that ETH did not fight to have him retained. He then decided to push for players that he knew, discarding the list that Rangnick had prepared and discarding whatever the scouts submitted. In essence, despite being poor in player evaluation he forced through his own choices. Based on that he has to share in the blame for the transfer flops. I can't pity him if it goes pear-shaped. |

I knew that for them to give him overall world best in 95/96 especially since his move to Barca also aided that, he must have done something very very breathtaking The guy was on mad form that season. That was the first time people saw a player and legitimately felt he might threaten Pele. Scoring 34 league goals in a La Liga season was uncommon in the 90s. Only Romario had come close and Hugo Sanchez was the last to surpass that but neither of them added jet-fuelled dazzling dribbles it. P.S I forgot Maradona. I was talking about attackers. |

ChristoBam: Like I said, you're looking at things retrospectively. You believe Antony shouldn't have looked like anything special to ETH or any of those involved. It's all because the Antony you know now is super mid.
We wouldn't have gone for him if we didn't think he was special. What you don't get is, I'm saying no matter how special he was, we should have walked away when the price tag became unattainable. But these ones negotiated 80m and were totally ready to pay. You're now saying ETH should have told those willing to pay the money not to get that player he thought was special and he should have stuck instead with Pellestri and Amad. That's funny bro. No newly appointed manager is ever doing that.
I'm not refusing to lay any of the blames on ETH. I'm just laying the blames on those that actually deserve it. Ten Hag's been totally getting all of the blames everywhere. Not seen anyone say anything about Murtough and the Antony deal. It's all Ten Hag, The Hag. But I have blamed Murtough several times for that deal nah. The truth however is that ETH has to share a large chunk in that blame. If it was a player that had no prior link to ETH so he was depending only on our scouts’ reports one can cut him some slack or if it was a player whose potential or qualities were in the neighbourhood of 80m but for ETH to give the okay to the club spending 80m on a player like Antony (a player he knew very well) is borderline negligence. He now compounded it by chasing Mount the next offseason. A player the average EPL fan recognised was a flop waiting to happen. If his talent evaluation is so poor then it is going to be a recurring problem. The guy has even got me doubting Kobbie Mainoo cos for ETH to like him so much I am becoming suspicious. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 12:23pm On Nov 03, 2023 |
ChristoBam: Lmao, please don't start this. There are players like Antony that end up adding new aspects to their games every year. Antony was really good for his age at that point. Obviously needed to add more to his game but that's expected for young wingers.
Where's Brandt that Klopp wanted so bad instead of Salah? People nake mistakes with young players like that all the time. You think they'll add something to their game and they end up not doing that.
Why would you even say the manager should make do with Pellestri and Amad? I hope if this manager gets sacked for whatever reason you won't say he should make do with Hannibal and Maino. Klopp was never Brandt's manager. If ETH had never coached Antony before i could give him a pass but the fact that he had coached him day in day out for 2 years and still did not bite Murtough's ear off when that one was foolishly offering 80m is a big cause for concern. I did not say he must make do with Amad and Pellistri but making use of them is better than wasting 80m on a dancer. I can live with that more easily than burning money that we have been told is limited. All i see is that you are refusing to lay ANY BLAME AT ALL at the feet of ETH. I can't get with that program bro. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 10:56am On Nov 03, 2023 |
ChristoBam: He'd have said no and then used which player at that spot?
You have to avoid looking at things retrospectively. We all thought we were getting a player that'd finally solve our right wing issue.
Ten Hag absolutely needed a left footed right winger. He was not going to tell them not to get him the player because of the price tag. Murtough should have cancelled discussions and looked for other alternatives. I disagree totally with this. We can look at thing’s retrospectively because we didn’t know how poor Antony was. We only had YouTube highlights to go by. However his coach of 2 years should have known better and if his mentality is “I prefer to waste 80m rather than improve the players on ground” then he is not the man for the job. If he had blocked the Antony move and tried to work with Amad and Pellistri we would not be worse off on the pitch and we would not have wasted 80m. There is no way I can absolve him completely of built in that matter. Murtough started the foolishness but ETH completed it. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by afrodoc2: 10:31am On Nov 03, 2023 |
ChristoBam: Mount I still understand. But how's Antony's deal on him. You should be calling for Murtough and Arnold's heads. He was available at a very cheap price early in the window. I personally forwarded many news reports in which it was emphatically stated that if we don't sign him before a particular time, we'd need to buy him at an unbelievable price.
Why delay the signing of a player because he's not as proritized as Dejong and Timber and then end up paying 80m at the end.
That's definitely not on ETH. We wouldn't be lamenting this much if he went for 40m. You don’t have to forward Antony reports to me. I followed it closely too. If I was ETH and I saw that because my bosses had foolishly delayed buying a 20-25m pound worth player early in the window they were going to now pay about 80m for him, I would have told my bosses not to bother paying such for him since it would be a colossal waste of limited funds. UNLESS I as ETH don’t know how to evaluate players and foolishly thought a 20-25m pound worth player would miraculously develop 80m pound skills from thin air. 2 wrongs do not make a right. You don’t correct foolishness with foolishness. Murtough and Arnold were foolish for dragging their feet on the deal initially. ETH was foolish for not pulling the plug on the deal when they started asking for BMW money for a Hyundai car. |

At least, I didn't watch them live to know the reason why a 20yr psv boy would be crowned world best. I guess they're some things wiki can't probably tell us He had moved to Barca before he won the award. He won it for his exploits in the 2nd half of the 1996 (1st half of the 96/97 season. The first 3 months of that season was mad as he and Davor Suker went head to head until he left the Croatian in the dust. Also most of his goals were spectacular rather than ordinary. He was injured for a large chunk of the preceding season in PSV so it was definitely that Barca early season run that got him the 1996 award. |

Also, ETH is not helping the team by playing some players out of position and making stupid selections and substitutions. He is making a lot of errors and many of them are unforced. nitrogen: The issue now is we can’t see what his coaching looks like. No glimpse of it at any point, it’s been gbasgbos since he joined, except when he plays counterattacks. But the style is no more working for him.
Another thing is if we had given ETH less say re: transfer matters, you will still come here to blame the board. I warned about this when he got the job because i know that this issue is beyond coaching. That is why his Ajax teams can play such lovely football and we are playing like a pub team. That is why good ebening struggled to play consistently exciting football at Assanal but his Villa side are a must watch. The thing though is that i don't pity ETH. He accepted the control, and he has to face the repercussions of that. If the football does not improve significantly by the end of the season then he should be kicked out for another person to try. That person can then be supported with a quality DoF and more funds. If the football gets worse he (ETH) won't see the new year at the club. |

My submission on Antony. afrodoc2: Possibly. I am not going to die on that hill. I will say most of the blame is on him but it is rarely 100% one person’s fault. There are several other people being paid big bucks to do a job in that organisation.
Putting the blame 100% on one person without looking at the whole picture is why we keep regressing while sacking manager after manager. Nobody in that whole place could look ETH in the face and say, “excuse me sir but it is like your head is hitting the ground if you think this guy will be our new right wing star”, or look at Murtough and say “excuse me sir but it is like they are cooking on your head if you think this salsa dancer is worth 80m pounds”.
Heck Murtough and ETH should have been able to tell each other that. When one factors how crap Antony has been there is no way one can completely absolve ETH of blame. |
