Sincere 9gerian: Definitely, this is the FIRST TIME that the construction of Second Niger Bridge is reaching this level of progress.

I believe by now, the preliminary works should have be concluded and the next phase of work, which ground braking commencement of real works of erecting the Bridge, should hopefully commence soon.

Meanwhile, the old Niger Bridge is as solid as ever and only requires regular maintenance. Even after the Second Niger Bridge is built, the old Niger Bridge will continue to be in use.

Mr. Amosun said FG’s construction will not stop his expansion plan for the Ijebu-Ode metropolis road.

The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has said the controversy generated by the Federal Government over the road construction works in Ijebu-Ode metropolis will not distract his government from going on with his massive [/b]expansion plan for the road.

Mr. Amosun gave the assurance while inspecting the road project and said his government is committed to executing the project in line with its promise to provide quality and durable roads throughout the state.

[b]He said the Ijebu Ode road deserves more than the asphalting which the Federal Government hurriedly carried out after his government paid N2 billion to contractors for a more elaborate expansion.

“Ijebu-Ode people deserve more than mere asphalting of their roads. They need something better than this. This is the area where the Awolowos, Soyinkas, Onabanjos and other founding fathers of the state come from. As you are aware, our own road is known as ‘Ogun standard road’, and that is what we are committed to doing here in Ijebu-Ode”, the governor said.

Lamenting the development, Mr. Amosun said contract for the asphalt surfacing of the road was awarded by the Federal Government as far back as 2010 but no action was taken until his government decided to intervene to address the dilapidated state of the road in the interest of the residents.

Mr Dosumu indicted the governor’s administration for not commencing the construction of the fourth mainland bridge as promised while campaigning in 2006 and concluded that “the federal government built the third mainland bridge and therefore the fourth mainland bridge will also be built by the federal government.”

However, the governor, intermittently addressed Mr Dosumu as “my friend” and “my opponent,” said that a responsible government will never concede its people’s needs to impossibility, especially because “the federal government has proven quite unreliable where needed most by Nigerians.” “The federal government has kept us in perpetual darkness and has not even maintained the federal roads, so while my friend will prefer to wait for the federal government, I have chosen to take my destiny in my hand,” he said, explaining that the vicissitudes of the global financial meltdown stalled the construction project.

FreeGlobe: So why didnt you snatch Lagos/Ibadan expressway? Thousands of Lagosians are dying in the Lagos Ibadan expressway, No death has been recorded on Niger bridge yet. Why can't Fashola invest a little of his over 800 billion naira loan to fix that road or even partner with Ibadan governor instead of this crying to Jonathan everyday for neglecting the SW. smh.

Desola: Think of it this way: for the bridge to fall on the likes you mentioned, they would 1) have been out of their minds to take a trip to that hell hole. 2) the would have had to travel in a canoe or ship to be directly placed under the cursed bridge. Moreover i hve tested the bread, we process the flower in my town in local , the process is complex juss like processing gari but the only difference is that after peel it, u washed, den ground it, dry the tinz desame day nt to next day, den u 'll re-ground to become flower in shot all others ingredient like baking powder, yeast e.tc then you can make bread, puff puff , donuts, chin chin.

I juss said this to assure that this has already be done in south-west Nigeria as far as 10years ago.

The Lagos State government on Thursday said that it had not abandoned its plan to construct a seaport in the ancient town of Badagry.

Governor Babatunde Fashola gave the assurance while inaugurating the Phase II Market Street in the Badagry Local Government Area.

Fashola said that the government kept the seaport project on the “front burner”.

He said that the government was aware of the needs of the ancient city, and would attend to them one after the other.

Fashola said that his administration would inaugurate more facilities in Badagry, including a court complex and a housing estate.

Fashola, however, warned the market men and women against trading on the roadsides, noting that roadside trading was an offence in the state.

“This road is supposed to aid easy access to your market; don’t trade on the road.

“Customers are supposed to meet you in your shops”, he said.

He appealed to Badagry residents to shun all forms of vice, and urged them to pay their taxes promptly.

Fashola also called on them to participate in the ongoing residents’ registration.

Earlier, the state commissioner for works and infrastructure, Obafemi Hamzat, hoped that the road would improve socio-economic activities in the area.

“This project was awarded in May 2012 as part of this administration’s efforts to solve flooding and traffic congestion within the community.”

The Lagos State government has established Agric-Youth Empowerment Scheme (AGRIC-YES) which is borne out of the need to create dignity and honour among young people.

The State Governor, Babatunde Fashola described agriculture as the foundation upon which the earth stands and in turn will give the youths a new focus and a new beginning.

Fashola gave this assertion at the graduation ceremony of 286 trainees of the state’s owned Agriculture Training Institute in Epe, Lagos.

“It was a very simple idea conceived in 2009, it has been rigorously developed and unflinchingly implemented; When we graduated the first set of grandaunts in 2010, it was our first tentative steps to how to pursue a policy that, we were clear in our minds, was a way forward.

We know it was a policy to take young people, young graduates away from the allure and the clamour and desperation of seeking and looking for jobs that do not exist and to bring them back to the foundations of the earth, to bring them back to the land. Without production of food, the factories and other industrial production would collapse.

If we do not produce food, the factories will shutdown, if we do not produce food and go back to the land, there will be no rubber to make tyres to even drive those luxury cars. That was the simple idea behind the AGRIC-YES, to go back to the land,”Fashola said.

Facilities
He pointed out that all the facilities needed for the young farmers to be productive have been provided and enjoined them not to disappoint themselves and those who have reposed enormous confidence in them.

[b]Fashola stressed that the newly-built 200 housing units in addition to the already existing 100 units in which each grandaunts is entitled to a two-bedroom apartment was aimed at making life comfortable on the farm settlement.

[b]“Four years after, we have added a 32-tonne cassava mill to provide cassava flour to supplement what the flour mills are using in global production. I am happy to hear that most of our beverage manufacturing companies are collecting their cassava starch from here.

It is going into our ingredients that end up as beverage, chocolate drink and all of that in our State. We have added a 64-tonne feed mill so that all the feedstock required for our livestock is now locally sourced and locally produced. In that alone about 32 people are employed to keep it going. We have also added a 50, 000 broiler capacity which means that we are now able to produce 10,000 chickens a week from this place.

We have provided 50, 000 capacity automated broiler houses. We have also added 50,000 layers and by January 2014 the stock of egg production here will rise to about 150,000 eggs in one day.

Other facilities added to make life comfortable for the grandaunts, include improved road network, and laid out streets. The administration would continue to tackle the problem of electricity in the institute until it is solved, you have my commitment; we will do something, no matter how difficult it is,”he said.[/b][/b]

Gratitude
One of the best graduating students, Oloko Olanrewaju, who spoke on behalf of other grandaunts, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the privilege given to them.

Olanrewaju told the gathering that they have been well trained during the course and promised that they would do their best to achieve food security in the country.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Prince Gbolahan Lawal, in his address, charged the grandaunts to use the skills which they have acquired to be the change they want to see in the world.
