@THE AMAKA @sandee575 @Olisa4all Where are u guys? Is there any new episode of ACI? I’m itching to know. |
nowal:I think it is Jessica Parcells who said, "Never underestimate the power of silly people in large groups." That many people are replying to Da Grin doesn't mean he was more influential than UMY. In any case, I thank God for the brilliant argument below: Jarus:@Poster, There's no basis for comparison. Who is Da Grin in the first place? U can compare Da Grin with one other upcoming artiste. I think the question should be: BETWEEN OBASANJO (when he dies) AND YAR'ADUA, which will pain u more. We may have to establish this (OBASANJO & YAR'ADUA) as a new thread. Let us begin to judge (rate) our leaders while they are still alive. |
The stuff couldnt download 100%. It stopped at about 6" instead 9". very interesting up to d limit I watched. I m trying to re-try d download. It talked about the Lockerbie bomb explosion of 1988, which killed over 200 passengers and crew, which also saw the Liberian terrorist jailed (remember he was released last year on health grounds). i m trying d download again. |
Olisa4all:Hey olisa, I'm cool. Been temporarily outta service too. Just came in2 NL 2day aftet a long while. I didnt get to hear about the Cadet Training. Can u get me link/site for the helicopter training? I'm really very fine. I guess is fine too 4rm her last post. THE AMAKA:Hi Amaka. Nice to hear from u again. I'm still opening the link, so I will watch it in a few minutes after it's fuly opened. Yes, I understand why. In Aviation, airliners do hire/rent (I guess I m using the right register here) airplanes from other airliners when especially the hiring party has less aircrafts to meet their demands, and also there the airliner giving out theirs has idle planes or do not intend to fly for any reason. In the case of Delta Air/Northwest, I guess Northwest is the airliner that hired Delta Air 's aircrafts. The inter-change in identification is usually tolerated. Meanwhile, the link is still opening. i will comment after it fully loaded. I can see this thread is now abandoned for us three. That's better so we can do our thing. Olisa, pls do get me the info I asked for (Helicopter training). I work, but need to learn flying airplanes (even a heli), if not for anything, for fun. I count on you. |
@Sandee, Thankx a million. I'll b asking u questions once in a while. I love pilots @Amaka, Tnx too. Pls, let me knw when some new series are out in ACIs. I need to learn more. Greet Olisa, our friend. |
sandee575:@sandee575 Tnx so much. U ve really answered my questn (up to maxmimum of 15 degrees). Forgive me for the wrong register; I'm still a layman in Aviation, learning from secondary sources. However, I hear 4rm documentaries and literature about ANGLE OF TAKEOFF, which they explain as that maximum angle when the nose can b pulled up to avoid TAIL STRIKE (Tail strike often happens, but dont really cause accidents). Depending on the size of the aircraft and its model, I hear it can range from 8deg to 11 degr to 14 and 15 degrees. Of course, it is practically impossible for an airplane to takeoff with about 30 degr or like a rocket 90 degrees. Pls, Sandee, if I may ask. R u in the Aviation area? Pls, I need to have a pilot friend. I like that job, not minding the TERRIBLE RISK. I want to see if I can become a pilot. I want to learn more. Caution: I am above 30 years. @The Amaka/Olisa I have seen it too. I think that was the 4th 9-11 plane, where the passengers then already abreast of crashes became America's last line of defence in the air. I think, it was the same that a man sent a text msg to his wife saying (I paraphrase) "we have hijackers, but i think we can over-power them." Unfortunately the narrow aisle did nt allow more than one passenger to enter the cockpit for attack. It was also suspected that those hijackers had pepper spray substance like tear gas which could have incapacitated the passengers from attacking. I felt bad about it. How easy it is to die! Yes, Aloha airlines. It was a case of Metal Fatigue and also design flaw, where part of the fusealage was torn off throwing out some people including a FLIGHT ATTENDANT, who was never seen again. God help us o! @Olisa Pilots do sleep. In fact autopilot makes them sleep deeper, unlike the driver of a car or lorry who dare not. Autopilots cannot however wake them up from deep slumber even with d alarm system. Have u forgotten d story last year of two pilots (of Northwest Airlines) that slept and flew past their Destination Airport by about 240km? They claimed they were in a heated argument over the new AVIATION POLICY that they forget when they passed their target airport. Everybody knows they slept. Traffic controllers raised an alarm of a possible hijack event, before they incidentally came around. It think it was oct 21, 2009. The pilots were suspended instantly. Another incident in January 2009, when another set of pilots were woken up after 18 minutes of sleep by ATCs. See these links ( I hope the news will still be there): http://www.islandpacket.com/1493/story/1009088.html http://www.metro.co.uk/news/world/article.html?Sleep_probe_after_arguing_pilots_fly_150_miles_past_airport&in_article_id=756960&in_page_id=64 The general warning which some documentaries carry is: "When you fly, you put your TRUST in the PILOTS, and the pilots put their TRUST in the their COMPUTERS, but when the computers fail, the outcome could be disasterous." That is why when I fly, I put my TRUST IN GOD. |
Olisa4all:Yah, Olisa, u hv my opinion. @The Amaka, I think d Muttalab guy isnt dt ug. He s a fine boy. Mayb d path he chose kinda left him unkempt. My opinion tho. Meanwhile, which episode was "The Flight That Fought Back." I may nt remember d title, but I guess I must hvv seen it. Just descrribe it 4 me. I will also go check those episodes out on Yutube. Pls, guys, if any of the ACI series is on commercial DVD sales, I wouldnt mind buying as much as 50 of them. Dt tells u hw much I like them. They ve tot me a lot about life. Very educative, informative. Each time I fly,, I become conscious of what to do at any point. I watch for cracks (do u remember d lady who saw cracks but merely changed her seat position?); I watch the attitude of the plane to know whether the pilots are sleeping. I ve had to ask a flight attendant to go, check whther the pilots were asleep; she laughed but she did. What I like most are d improvements in d aviation industry: The collision avoidance systems & all; the idea of asking pilots to use diffrnt routes when going, and when returning to avoid collisions, which happnd in the past. I wish I can be a pilot. The Hudson River ditch is still the hero today. I ve heard much of ditching; none has ever been as successful as that of 57-year old Sullenberger. He's my man anytime. Ethipian airline pilot that dirtched in the waters is also good. He saved many lives. Guys, I can talk all day on airplanes. I wish I have a pilot friend. I need to share his personal experience. If there's anyone on NL, please, let me meeet him. They are cool pple. |
@Olisa4all & The Amaka, Sorry 4 steppin aside 4 a long while. Quote from: Olisa4all on February 26, 2010, 11:51 AM THE AMAKA (f)U re right The Amaka. It's the Ethopian Airlines crash. The pilot could not convince the hijackers that he had no enough fuel to fly to Australia (of all places)!! Midair, the plane suffered fuel starvation [dont mind me I use their language register now; I'm almost a pilot now, lol]. The pilot managed to ditch the plane on the ocean. Unfortunately some pple still died. Most of the pple that died failed to heed to AIR CREW WARNING "NEVER INFLATE YOUR LIFE JACKET INSIDE THE PLANE!!" Well, I have watched severel of the them. I cant really remember their names/titles, but I love these episodes of ACI 1. Mistaken Identity: Where the US Naval War Ship errorneously (mistakingly; hence the name mistaking Identity) shot down Iran Airlines, thinking it was an F15 war plane. That was at the heat of the gulf war. US refused to apologise, saying they took proper measure before firing. 2. KLM collision with another plane on the runway, which left several people dead. THe KLM pilot was impatient, and did not wait for final clearance before he took off, unfortunately there was another Jumbo plane taxiing on the runway. THe KLM was in a hurry apparently because his destination airport was about to close that night. He was rushing to beat the airport closing time but did he? 3. In this episode, Iraqi terrorists shot at a DHL cargo plane with an Rocket Propelled Granade (RPG), and injured the right (or was it left) wing. This affected the plane's hydraulic systems that control the aircraft. Yet, the pilot managed to land safely. 4. THe Fedex plane struggle where a depressed staff member of Fedex wanted to hijack the plane and commit suicide, using the plane. It was a terrible struggle b/c the man injured the 2 pilots & struck one of them unconscious. But they still managed to land the plane. 5. Kid in the cockpit: where a pilot brought his two teenage children into the cockpit and handed over the controls to them; unknowing to the pilot, the autopilot was disengaged by the boy and the plane crashed into the ocean, killing all on board 6. The volcanish ash episode; where the plane flew across a mountain that just witnessed a volcanic erruption. The volcanic ash block the engine power and the 4 engines went off. But luck smiled at them, that the engines started roaring back to life as the plane was to crash into the ocean. 7. The Hudson near-crash of January 2009, although this is not yet in ACI documentary. Maybe, I should invite the 2 of you to re-enact it. lol I have many, many others in my head. My good friends, I know you will have enjoyed this. But, let me not bore other pple. @Olisa4all I understnd u come 4rm a Pilot's family. Could u pls, assist me with the question I posed early? What is the takeoff angle of most airplanes? I do NOT mean the Climbing angle(s); I mean takeoff. I know it varies from plane to plane. Can i have the range? Honestly, I would have loved to be a pilot. I love airplanes. I sincerely do. In fact, Air Crash investigation documentaries have made me to be aware of what to do in case there is a mayday - GOD FORBID! |
chaircover:I trip. Never knew there are wonderful ladies in NL. I always read some stupid advice from women, that runs my tummy. Chaircover, this is it!. Thanx 4 dt. |
@Poster U are a liar. I hate when pple who are nt working hard begin to look for short-cuts to their stepping up. your story is like those that say without sleeping with their lectures, the man will fail them (I have equally tackled such here). @All, it is rare that marketers are sacked when they are doing well. Exception was only during the mad downsizing occasioned by the d bad economy and meltdown. Let this man (or is she an lxb) not deceive anyone of you. No female bank manager can make such a silly demand, with a threat behind it. No! Nigeria is bad, but we have nt got this bad. Poster is necessarily a ne'er do well. Wake up and do your job. |
@everybody We can really see why myriads of marriages are crashing daily from the Western world (now hitting hard on) to 9ja. What a pity. But, b/4, I abandon this thread in shock & disbelief for what I am reading, I want u all to ponder over this statement by Seneca, "Fidelity purchased with money, money can destroy.” It means, any love bought with money, can be re-purchased by the highest bidder. I means that the moment your 'love' finds a 'lovier' person, it can easily align towards the new 'love.' It means that for whatever reason a husband is incapacitated, the woman is at liberty to leave or treat him the way his condition demands. I can really see without a crystal ball what is crashing people's marriages. I can c. So sad, isn't it. Woe to man. I rest my case. |
A jobless man isn’t ripe for marriage — Elo Obokia, ActressLittle wonder their marriages (in Nollywood) are crashing like hell. What role models for Nigeria and Africa. Nonsense! If your marriage is built on materiality, what do you do when the man suffers a temporary setback in business? Divorce of cause. Stupid! I hate when women of failed relationships begin to advise our younger folks that marriage can never work. I hate it, like hell & death. Instead of u to think inwards & redress whatever it is that caused your misfortune, you begin to advise others to tow your failed path. Nonsense!! |
Feraz « #19 on: Yesterday at 03:56:44 PM »@Feraz Tnx. However, there is no Igbo greeting "Ututu oma." Ututu oma is a bastardised expression, coined from the English transliteration of "good" (oma); & morning (ututu). Good morning in Igbo is best expressed thus: "I boola?" "I boola chi?" "I saala chi?" "I teela?" "I tetela?" "I putala?" [transliterated as: Have you come out?] Let us also be careful, not to confuse a learner of Igbo. The "u" as in "who" is NOT the "u" contained in "ututu." There is actually a diacritic sign underneath the "u," which differentiates it from the English "u." This she will learn in orthography (Igbo alphabet). |
ezeagu (m)« #31 on: Today at 10:47:27 PM »My brother, let's not argue over this. What is taught in schools and used for other official purposes is 'STANDARD IGBO,' which many laymen call "Central Igbo." Standard Igbo is an agglutination of different dialects (for compromise sake), but standard Igbo is NOT spoken by a particular Igbo linguistic group. For example, there is no nasalisation and aspiration in Standard Igbo, meanwhile, both features are very present in almost all parts of Imo & Abia states (which area comprises the so-called 'Central Igbo'). However, tone is a universal process in all Igbo dialects and the standard form.Quote from: airzzee on Today at 08:22:04 PMCentral Igbo is taught in schools and people are encouraged to speak it. The problem poster (a non-native speaker) will have is mastering these Supra-segmental features. Poster needs to get a competent tutor or DVD as a tool to understnd the language. The problem with Igbo (like many other Nigerian languages is that varying the tone wrongly can create taboo or derogatory words, which will be seen as disrespectful. Again, b/c she is interested in Mbaise Inland East Igbo - [See Ikekeonwu (1986)], she must also have interest in the supragemental features (aspiration, nasalisation etc), since their inclusion changes the meaning of words or utterances. Let us look at some of the distinctive features in Igbo: 1. Tone: (We have 2 main tones (HIGH tone & LOW tone), and the third called DOWN-STEP (merely a down-stepped high tone; what laymen call Mid Tone, simply b/c Yoruba has Mid Tone). Change of tone brings change of meaning. E.g.: (a)"AKWA" can mean [cry (HH); cloth/dress; bed/bridge; egg] - notice that maning changes depending on which the tone mark occurs where. (b)"EGBE" [hawk/kite (HH); gun (HL); to crawl (used with auxillary verb "na" as in na-egbe, meaning is crawling) (LH) (c) "ISI" [head (HH); blindness (LL); to cook (verb root) (HDstep); warning/bad-omen (LH); odour (HL)] 2. Nasalisation (found mainly in Abia & Imo states & a few other areas): "ARA" (without nasalisation) - madness (there are also tonal variants here: HH or HDstep) "ARA" (with nasalisation) - bosom "RA" (without nasalisation) - lick "RA" (with nasalisation) - have s.ex/make love 3. Aspiration (found mainly in Abia & Imo states & a few other areas): Aspiration comes with embeded nasalisation; therefore pple tend to mistake one for the other. "ba" (without aspiration) - become rich/more in number "ba" (with aspiration) - scold; peel (eg. peel yam) 4. There is another tonal effect in Igbo called "Downdrift." During longer utterances (sentences), the tone continues to drop (drift) downwards/get lowered, such that a subsequent tones in a sequence of words, are lower/reduced in pitch than similar tones preceeding (appearing before). It's like running the musical scale downwards (d' t l s f m r d). But, only those with a musical or good phonetic ear can actually notice/deduce this phenomenon. In summary, To learn Igbo therefore, apart from the orthography (Igbo A,B,C,D), which NL pple are telling you, you must pay attention to: 1. Tone (present in all dialects and standard form) 2. Downdrift (compulsory in all dialects and standard form) 3. Nasalisation (For Imo and Abia & adjoining dialects) 4. Aspiration (For Imo and Abia & adjoining dialects) I also want to use this medium to encourage our people to know one/two things about their languages; it does not take anything away from us. Igbo people especially are backward on this. The average Igbo man leaving outside the Igboland does not speak Igbo let alone understand the science of Igbo language. So sad! @Poster Note that there are probably over 100 dialects (including variants) of the Igbo language. This means you must know who is teaching you, what he is teaching you and his competence. I think, with my little explanation, you will have known what you want. @ChinenyeN/ezeagu I guess you will have learnt one or two things. |
ezeagu:May I make these clarifications: 1. There is nothing like "Central Igbo." We have "Standard Igbo," which is NOT spoken by anybody 2. Owerri, Mbaise, Orlu, Okigwe, Umuahia & their neighbouring areas of Igbo has suprasegmental features, including NASALISATION & ASPIRATION (both of which are phonemic in nature; meaning they can bring about change in meaning). 3. Igbo generally is a tonal language, meaning that tone brings about change in meaning between words that look alike. You need to put extra effort to master these things. I can bet you, it will be difficult for you to learn Igbo without a CD/voice recording. Anyway, good luck. |
@Amak & Olisa4all Pls, who knows the initial takeoff (NOT CLIMBING) angle of airplanes? I ve been trying to figure that out. Pls, if u get that, let me know. |
THE AMAKA:Nice to knw I'm nt alone in this "wierd" progrme. I tot I m d only person dt loves it. Dt's my best, & best, & d best TV prgrme 4 me. I learn a lot from it. Mayb, we shall a thread to discuss d episodes we watched. I love planes badly. At times, I feel I can fly one without going thru d training; just by watching AC investigation. Thanks dear Olisa4all:Tnx Olisa, That's my favourite TV progrme. I can do without it But, I disagree wit u concerning your stats. Most crashes are caused by human error - from the ground crew, to the cabin crew error. |
THE AMAKA (f)« #24 on: Yesterday at 06:24:50 AM »Have u watched any of the numerous episodes of 'AIR CRASH INVESTIGATION' or 'SECONDS FROM DISASTER'? If u haven't, pls do; I bet u will change your opinion instantly. |
lawrence83:Na wa oh! The thing reach like this? |
It's good for NIGERIA TO GO so that Amodu can go. He's a BIGGGGGGGGG disappointment! A BIG SHAME to him & NFF |
What do you think about the New 2010 Renault Electric Car?: 1. The idea & concept 2. The advert itself on the media [I LOVE THE ADVERT!] Can the concept itself bring the much needed change to the world? Have a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-E32pADJOs&annotation_id=annotation_844945&feature=iv |
It is interesting to hear all the views and invectives as well, when all we needed to do was to EXPLAIN WHAT CURSE MEANS, and rub minds. A leper was to be healed. The precondition was for him to throw himself into the River Jordan seven times. It is similarly interesting that know that what prolonged this man's cleansing was the decision between plunging himself into the waters and ego-flexing; when, of course, he had no choice. Until we wake up, God knows when, |
Mine may differ from others. However, you need to consider the following circumstances: 1. Where do u stay - on your own? 2. Do u have somebody (like your parents) sustaining you for now? 3. How old are you? 4. How long have u looked for work; i.e after graduation? (Note: 2 years is average in Nigeria) 5. Are u under some kind of pressure? 6. Mayb, u live in the city, where transportation will take up almost the whole salary? Also note that starting with such paltry amount may: 1. Distract you from getting a better job 2. Make relatives feel you re working & start mounting more pressure for money 3. You may not have much time to look for what u deserve and step up 4. Make you become complacent & see yourself settling for that meagre job/pay all your life When I finished from Uni, I was offered a lecturing job in my university, among other jobs. I rejected them b/c I had my focus and knew what i wanted. I waited for my passion for more months and I got it. I chose it out of passion and hunger for it. I have been in this job for the past 10 years, and still running. It pays me both in body and spirit. You can do the same, if you can consider all the circumstances. You may use the time available to upgrade yourself. Think again. |
This is great! For some time now, I have been paying my so-called tithe via such charity ventures (to needy individuals and homes). After all, Christ said, “Whatsoever you do to such people, you have done to me.” I’d rather GIVE IT TO PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED it than those who have amassed so much, while the indigent around them suffer. That’s part of my philosophy anyway. Let me know how to start with this. Meanwhile, does it mean we must be in a collection of 5’s or 10’s before it can be done? Is there no such in Lagos? Only Abj? I stay in Lagos, that's why I ask. Send us an email add for us to communicate further. I am very much interested |
Loveme23 (f) « on: January 15, 2010, 03:52 PM » Freiburger (m) « #3 on: January 15, 2010, 04:40 PM »Nothing "sounds egoistic" there about her ideal husband. That's her dream. It is good for somebody to set a high standard for him/herself, a goal, a vision and be focused in life, so you are not confused and distracted by every fly crawling past your direction. She has written her vision statement & needs to stick to it. I did that too, and got only one person scoring over 70% of what I wanted & took her as a wife. I made sure, however, that some major qualities were never compromised in the 70% - education was one of them. Poster should know that getting 100% of a man/woman is IMPOSSIBLE, as no one is perfect. @poster Even when you (are about to) get married to your chosen one, you may need some books to help u understand your spouse. PERSONALITY PLUS, by Florence Litteure, will be a good one to teach you how to understand your own temperament, his temperament and your common/differing interests. For your information, marriage is like the bitter kola: the taste to the tongue is different from the sound of its chewing. And like somebody said, “Marriage is an institution where the people outside want to go in and the people inside want to go out.” It is what you make of it that eventually becomes marriage for you and not necessarily external factors. Good luck to you. |
Each time Nigeria fumbles in football matches, our Nigerians begin to boo the players, insult them and say all kinds of unholy things against them. But, when Man-U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, FCB, Inter or Real Madrid, etc loses, our people brood for weeks, crying, wailing. A story was told last time of how Chelsea supporters in Nigeria pushed a cow (they bought and decorated in Chelsea colour) into a lagoon in Lagos, simply b/c they lost a major tourney. You need to read some comments about Nigeria by Nigerians in all spheres including football. I wonder y, I cant figure out why. Y do most Nigerians hate Nigeria? Why is there no single patriotism for our beloved country? For me, I LOVE MY 9JA; NO GOING BACK, NO CASTIGATION, NO BAD BELLE, NO KAI! 9JA IS DA BOMB! What about you? |
We have many unpatrotic Nigerians. What a shame! I love Nigeria, I love u my fatherland, whether we win or lose!!!!!!! |
Ben-10:Woeful. Only about 31% had 5 credits including English & Maths. Over 57,000 (about 17%) results seized for exam malpractices. Why wont it be so? Like fathers like children. The fathers are doing election malpractices (cheating in elections), the children are cheating in exams. There's no difference! Visit this site: http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=164255 |
airzzee:As I said earlier, a cursed person DOEST NOT know that he is cursed. But, we need to understnd what 'CURSE' means. Please, brothers & sisters, what is a curse? Somebody tell us so we can move on. |
Kobojunkie:@Kobojunkie You are NOT “Ibo.” You are “IGBO.” There is no word or people like 'Ibo.' Meanwhile, I forgive your abuses. OgidiBoy: olubuffett:Now, that critical-minded people are talking, shall we review the topic: First I acknowledged that fact that the Igbo are: 1. Hardworking; probably the most hardworking; 2. Ambitious; 3. Intelligent; maybe wiser than the others - wise men come from the East, you know; 4. Even more (positive and sweeter things). So, I am NOT coming from a derogatory point of view. The truth is that a CURSED PERSON seldom knows that he is cursed. Just like A MAD MAN DOES NOT KNOW OR REALISE THAT HE IS MAD. Most mad men that were taken for deliverance were NOT healed mainly because, they never understood what was wrong with them in the first place; they felt they were okay, hale and hearty, and saw no need to make some positive utterances required of them to be rescued. Correct me I’m wrong here. So, I won’t be surprised if people react the way they do. It's understandable. But, the truth must be told. The truth is not sweet, not palatable, not good to hear, not enticing, not flattering. The truth is bitter; very, very bitter. Before we go forward, can somebody tell us the meaning of the word “CURSE?” You may use the dictionary, or any reasonable citation, or the holy books, even the traditional Igbo meaning of curse (“obubu onu”). We pause a little for your responses, and also form some quorum. Today, today, we shall liberate ourselves from any bondage. Only if you agree that something is wrong (50% solved) and look for a solution (100%). Our people say, “He who does not know where the rain started beating him does not know where it stopped beating him.” This is a serious matter. |
