#11 Oriental Yeti ("Lu Chin" ![]() We thought it couldn't get any scarier than the Hairless Cat but this new creature found in China is something of nightmares. Since 2010, no scientist has concluded what it is. Evidently it calls out like a cat but looks like a hairless bear. morning nairalanders, every time i remember what i passed through within the last 2 weeks i seriously hate nigeria and this even made me more angry to hear we are celebrating independence, this was what actually happened and it happened to me not a movie.... on the 20th of september 2013 in my residence in akinyosoye street ondo my home in school as a student of adeyemi college of education ondo, this day would always leave lot to think of in me for the rest of my life as i slept being so weak from the days' work at around 12:45am i heard a loud hit on the backyard door before anyone could wake up the door was already pulled down and seven(according to those who saw them when leaving) men came in with weapons and started raiding the house of 8rooms and were seriously beating people mercilessly they entered my room and took all they could lay hands on with heavy hands of beating on me and my friends they took my samsung galaxy s2 from the trolley and took my laptop,my friend's laptop and in short they collected all our phones and all this didnt happen without heavy kicks from their big boots, they took us all and locked us i the landlady's room and went back to search each room and believe me nothing useful was spared talking of perfumes, modems, all my domiciliary mastercards and atms including money they left for the house behind our house at about 2:35am they also raided the house behind us and took to their hills.......................lets say i forgot this is a street we pay monthly vigilante/security dues and they were no where to be found there was nothing we could do so we accepted faith until security men came to open the door to where we were locked at about 5:15am i was so so so down and the guy next to my room was seriously injured so we took him to a nearby hospital and believe me he sustained a really fatal injury which they inflicted on him by hitting his cooking stove on his head............. my samsung gala s2 has an anti theft activated in it that sends back any number inserted into it to my roommate so i waited to receive the new number inserted into my phone and lo and behold i received this message with the new number, and i had gone to the police station to make a report and promised to be back when i receive the msg and when i received it i went there and to my greatest surprise i was asked to pay 3k for signal file or so and i was like i lost all i had to thieves and u still ask me to pay money again and with the look on my face one of them said ok i shouldn't bother so i left the second day i was there again and the one that says i shouldn't bother explained things to me that they need to track the thieves down by calling them with a lady so they need money to get sim, load airtime and transportation he requested for #1500 buit i gave him the last 1k with me that day and to my surprise when i went back there he said i should go get an mtn sim i got it,he said i should go and load airtime on it which i also did from my own purse again now time to call i wish u could just imagine someone older than my mum that they said would make the phone call.....(god i felt like crying) and i forgot to add that when ever they want to make the call i would be the one to remove my sim from my torchlight phone i just got it was as if i was the one doing the case myself ,when i reasoned i was only loosing there than gaining or having hope to retrieve my phones and laptop back i left and went to get a computer with an internet connection to do some research and lo and behold i saw the persons details plus picture(that is the person who inserted his sim) but he is not in the state he came from a nearby state so i went to give the police all the details i got and i hated Nigeria more when he stylishly shielded away from going to that location to arrest the culprit he said if i could get enough money they may do that but Nigerians reason with me na i got no and i have been spending since the day this case started pls what do u think i can do even if its just my laptop,,,,,,,, got a whole lot of work on it that is seriously affecting me now |

Inside one of the many busy open markets in Kampala, rows of hanged trousers and dresses swing in midair, casting a shadow over the colorful stacks of unsorted clothes sitting on rickety wooden stalls. Amidst the hustle and bustle, bargain-hunting shoppers rummage through the large piles of printed t-shirts, short-sleeved blouses and retro jackets in search of a great deal. This is the Ugandan capital's version of a thrift store, fully stocked with second-hand garments from the West. Here, European-made clothing, American sports jerseys and designer labels are all offered at discount prices, turning second-hand markets like this into a prime destination for cheap garments. "Things from U.S. and UK, London, they are nice," says Karol, owner of a local second-hand market stall. "My customers keep on coming." Cashing in on second-hand clothing Uganda's $35,000 electric car Uganda's teenage chess star Short-term gain, long-term pain? The sale of Western cast-offs starts with charities in European and North American countries that earn money by offloading donated clothes they cannot find buyers for. The unwanted used clothes often end up in landfills. Increasingly, however, they are also being purchased by wholesalers, who then sort, label and package them into containers for export to different markets. A large portion of these previously owned clothes ends up in market stalls across Africa -- according to an Oxfam report, used garments account for over 50% of the clothing sector by volume in many sub-Saharan African countries. For customers in Kampala's bustling markets, however, this is no dumping ground. Instead, these clothes are as desirable as they are affordable. "Yes, the price is right and the clothes are still looking good," says Brenda, a local shopper. In the beginning, it appears to be a win-win situation for everyone involved; Western charities receive much-needed revenue, African buyers with weak purchasing power get low-priced, well-made clothing, and merchants find eager customers for their merchandise. But some experts say that the mass influx of cheap hand-me-downs from the West could have a much more negative impact. "The long-term effect is that countries such as Malawi or Mozambique or Zambia can't really establish or protect their own clothing industries if they are importing second-hand goods," says Andrew Brooks, lecturer at King's College London and co-author of a study called "Unravelling the Relationships between Used-Clothing Imports and the Decline of African Clothing Industries." Your t-shirt may be quite cheap for someone to buy, but it would be better if that person could buy a locally manufactured t-shirt. Andrew Brooks, King's College "Your t-shirt may be quite cheap for someone to buy, but it would be better if that person could buy a locally manufactured t-shirt, so the money stays within the economy and that helps generate jobs," he adds. Big business Analysts say textile industries are relatively easy to develop and, as success stories like South Korea showcase, can provide the first step in the ladder towards economic growth. A booming clothing sector is labor intensive, generates national revenues through taxes and, ultimately, can help end dependency on aid. But in Africa, the introduction of trade-liberalization policies and the opening of economies in the 1980s and 1990 allowed both second-hand and cheap new imports, especially from Asian countries, to enter markets across the continent. This undermined growth opportunities for many local industries and led to the closure of several African clothing factories, say experts. According to a 2006 report, textile and clothing employment in Ghana declined by 80% from 1975 to 2000; in Zambia it fell from 25,000 workers in the 1980s to below 10,000 in 2002; and in Nigeria the number of workers fell from 200,000 to being insignificant. Meanwhile, second-hand became a highly lucrative industry across African markets. Whilst exact continent-wide figures are hard to come by, global used clothing exports from OECD countries stood at $1.9 billion in 2009, according to 2011 U.N. Comtrade data. Yet Brooks claims the figure is an underestimation, largely because of the widespread smuggling of used clothes that occurs in many countries, as well as trans-shipments that are not documented in official statistics. "The best estimate that probably gives the value of the global trade of second-hand clothing would be about $3 billion," he says. "Obviously, that's the import cost and once things are sold on retail, [it's] probably twice that," he adds.

About 70,000 refugees who fled violence in Mali are living in "appalling" conditions in a camp in the middle of the Mauritanian desert, Doctors Without Borders said Friday. The situation has only got worse in Mbera camp since French forces entered Mali in January to help local forces take on Islamist militants, the humanitarian group said. About 15,000 more refugees have flooded into the camp since the fighting, and conditions are so bad there that many who were healthy became ill or malnourished after they arrived. The number of children admitted to clinics in the camp for severe malnutrition more than doubled in that time, climbing from 42 to 106, Doctors Without Borders said. What led to Mali's disintegration? Mali's refugee crisis worsening About 85% of the children under treatment arrived between January and February, despite the nutritional status of the new refugees being generally good when assessed on arrival. "These statistics show that the refugees have grown weaker whilst in the camp, the very place where they should have been receiving assistance, including correctly formulated food rations from aid organizations," said Henry Gray, emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders. "There has clearly been a lack of preparation for this new influx of refugees." The camp was set up by the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, with the Mauritanian government 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) from the border when refugees started arriving in early 2012. The report, "Stranded in the Desert," is based on testimonies collected from more than 100 refugees at the Mbera camp between February and mid-March of this year. The majority of the refugees in Mbera camp are pastoralists who lived nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyles in northern Mali, according to the report. Some of the families left their young men behind to tend to their herds while they fled over the border into neighboring Mauritania. "Most of the refugees are from the Tuareg and Arab communities," said Gray. "They fled preemptively, often for fear of violence due to their presumed links with Islamist or separatist groups. Their home in northern Mali is still in the grip of fear and mistrust." Limited water, poor hygiene facilities While some improvements have been made at the camp since the mass influx of new refugees three months ago, Doctors Without Borders said, "the challenge will be to continue to provide assistance that meets humanitarian standards." Water is still in short supply in the desert camp, a situation made worse by daytime temperatures that reach 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). Refugees at Mbera receive just 11 liters of water per person per day, instead of the 20 liters recommended by humanitarian standards, the report said. Some of the families that arrived in January had to wait more than a month for materials to build shelters, the report said. They were forced to do what they could with sticks and scraps of cloth in the meantime. There is also a serious shortage of toilet facilities. When the camp was extended in January to accommodate the influx of refugees, there were four latrines for 12,000 people -- far below the recommended minimum of one per 20 people. More are now being built, but the hygiene situation remains difficult. Another problem is that the rations provided by the U.N. World Food Program, mostly rice and pulses, are very different from the pastoralist refugees' customary diet, which is based on meat and milk. Many new arrivals also suffer from delays in getting food supplies, the report said. And with the situation in northern Mali still volatile as French and African forces hunt down the remaining Islamist fighters -- and against a backdrop of complex ethnic and political tensions -- it's unclear when the refugees will feel able to return home. 'This time, we left early' A 71-year-old Malian interviewed for the report, Ibrahimou, said three sons had stayed in their village to care for the livestock, but the rest of his family had left. "With the other village chiefs, we took the decision to leave out of fear of the Malian army," he said. "I lost brothers and cousins in 1992. I saw a lot of atrocities and I lost a lot of loved ones in the conflict. I almost lost all my animals too. This time, we left early. Nobody knows when we will be back but, at my age, I have no desire to go into exile every 10 years." About a quarter of those interviewed said they'd fled direct fighting where their lives or family members' lives were in danger. A small percentage said they had fled because of the seizure of power by Islamist groups in cities such as Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal. Islamist extremists carved out a large haven in northern Mali last year, taking advantage of a chaotic situation after a military coup by the separatist party MNLA. Many of the most recent arrivals in the camp told Doctors Without Borders they had left Mali because of food shortages and other problems. "Life has become very hard. I had nothing to give to my children. There was nothing to eat, shops were closed or empty. There was no market for cattle. I could not stay because I have small children to feed," said Halima, aged 24. Doctors Without Borders has been working at Mbera camp since February 2012, when the first groups of refugees from Mali began to arrive. Its teams have treated about 1,000 malnourished children since then and delivered about 200 babies. Even before the latest influx of refugees, the nutritional situation was critical, with a study by Doctors Without Borders in November revealing mortality rates above the emergency threshold for children under 2 years old. Since the French-led intervention in January, the number of consultations at its clinics in the camp has gone up from 1,500 to 2,500 per week, Doctors Without Borders said. UNHCR has said that it and partner agencies "struggle to maintain minimum humanitarian standards in Mbera Camp."

Akpos who has lived in Ghana all his life, just got admission into one of the Nigerian institutions. At the first day of lecture, the following conversation erupted….. The Lecturer said, “let’s begin by reviewing some Nigerian history.” The Lecturer asked who said, “I shall return to die in the land of my fathers?” She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Akpos, who had his hand up. Akpos replied: “King Jaja of Opobo, 1875” very good!” said lecturer. Then, she asked again, who said, “The land use act will feed the nation?” Again, no response except from Akpos:”Obasanjo , 1976.” The Lecturer snapped at the class; “class, you should be ashamed. Akpos, who is new to our Country, knows more about our history than you do.” The Lecturer heard a loud whisper: ”Ghana must go”. “who said that?” she demanded, Akpos put his hand up,”Buhari 1984.” At that point, a student at the back scornfully said;”Hmmm, you think you are smart?” The Lecturer glared and asked; “All right! Now, who said that?” Again, Akpos said,”Babangida to Abiola, 1992.” Hmmm, a Student at the back smilled “I dey laugh ooh” Akpos smilled back and said Obasanjo to Atiku 2001. Now furious, another student yelled; ”Oh yeah! Eat this!” Akpos jumped out of his chair waving his hand and shouting to the Lecturer,”Indian mistress giving an apple to Abacha, 1998. Now, with almost mob hyseria, someone said; “You little poo. If you say anything else, I’ll kill you.” Akpos frantically yelled at the top of his voice; “Chris Uba to Ngige, 2004!” The Lecturer fainted, and as the class gathered around her on the floor, someone said; “Oh poo, we’re in Big trouble now!” Akpos whispered; “Chimaroke Nnamani, Ayodele Fayose and Lucky Igbinedon 2007. Someone angrily said; “Dont answer him, he is a fool” Akpos smiled nd replied; “Obansanjo to IBB, 2011 Now, the Lecturer managed to get up and asked Akpos; pls, who’re you? Show your self.. Akpos jumped up, yelled and said; Jonathan to BOKO HARAM, 2012. |
