CelebritiesI Can’t Withdraw Money Without My Wife’s Permission - Actor Abubakar Yakubu by ajasbaba(op): 9:55am On Sep 11, 2013
Abubakar Yakubu is a Nollywood actor who has been married to Precious for eight years.

In this interview, they talk about their marriage and how they cope together as a couple;

How they met?

Yakubu: I met her before she left secondary school. She was in her final year then. She was a very innocent and naive girl who took me like a friend and teacher she could talk and relate to.

Precious: Two months after we met, I realised that he was the person God wanted me to marry. Though I was young, I knew that I would say yes if he proposed to me.

Yakubu: The first day I saw her, as she walked towards me, I just said, ‘That’s my wife coming.’

On religious differences:

Yakubu: She was not a Muslim when we married; she has always been a Christian and we still practice our individual religions till date.

Precious: Before we got married, we had put that into consideration. We decided that we met religion on earth and when we die, we will leave religion behind. We did not allow religion to become a barrier to our love; we decided that we would keep practising our individual religions. During festive periods (of both religions), we all celebrate together. My baby has a Christian and an Islamic name and we have been living like that without problems.

Parents reaction over religious differences:

Yakubu: They were reluctant but in the Koran, it is stated that a Moslem man can marry a Christian woman. It is only a Muslim woman who cannot marry from another religion. Moreover, religion should add to people’s happiness instead of taking away from it. If God has designed that this is the way we should be, I should not be the one to change it. I follow her to church and to deliverance service, I also fast with them. God is one. It is only when people worship something else that they become scared of God. In my wife’s church, you pray for yourself, just like in Islam. The solutions to people’s problems are with God and if people seek Him, He will answer them.

On if she is worried about marrying an actor:

Precious: No. I was not because my husband is not like any other actor. I have known him for a long time now. He is not a womaniser, I was in secondary school when he met me, he gave me time to go to the university, I graduated and went for National Youth Service Corps, but he waited for me. That obviously showed that he was in love and if a man is in love, even when he sees other women, he would not be tempted. He is a wonderful man and if I should come back to this world a second time, he would be my husband.

Why he did not settle down with an actress;

Yakubu: It is destiny. Probably, if I had seen and fallen in love with someone else, I would have married her; unfortunately I did not see anyone. I dated my wife for 13 years before we married. I have been in the industry for more than 30 years but I have not been attracted to anybody enough to want to settle down with her. Besides, there were not so many women in the industry in the 90s and the few girls in the industry at the time were Christians. Socially and religiously, I needed somebody who could understand and relate with me and take me as I was.

How they deal with misunderstanding;

Yakubu: I apologise a lot even when she is at fault.

Precious: Before we got married eight years ago, he was always the first to apologise. Since we got married, he flexes his ego but we always find a way to settle our differences. It is either I call him or he sends me short message on my phone.

On whether they operate a joint account;

Yakubu: Yes, we do. She is the principal signatory, I cannot take money without her signature but she can take without mine and I like it that way because I am a big spender, I may empty the account under seconds.

On if she prevents him from taking money;

Precious: There has been no time like that. I would never prevent him from taking money because he has given me enough privilege, telling him not to take money would be taking things for granted considering the fact that there are men who do not allow their wives to know what is in their accounts.

What angers them about each other:

Precious: Sometimes, he stays out late with his friends and they have too much to drink.

Yakubu: The normal thing women do to offend a man but she is more like a sister, whenever she misbehaves, I will pretend as if I am angry and put her back on track. We would laugh about it later. There is no definitive character in her that I don’t like.

PoliticsLagos Ranked 4th Worst City On Earth by ajasbaba(op): 2:28pm On Sep 02, 2013
Eko o ni Baje Oooo. Lagos is ranked the 4th worst city on earth and the second-fastest growing city in Africa. This is courtesy of Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU

According to the list which has countries from Africa and Asia in the first three,Lagos shares its 137 position with Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea

The report released yesterday reads....

“Rapid growth is not always a good thing because Lagos is now a magnet for two perpetual threats to peace: pirates and Islamist warriors.

Boko Haram have a problem with cities like Lagos and also lots of weaponry. Pirates threaten trade and use kidnapping as a method of funding. Islamist terrorist groups such as Boko Haram (“Education is forbidden”) want to create their own version of heaven on earth by destroying cities such as Lagos and imposing strict sharia law. Lagos has enormous potential but as yet little to show for it – hence its poor ranking
CelebritiesEFCC Wants Stephaine Okereke, Others Arrested Over Akpabio's 50m Largesse!! by ajasbaba(op): 2:21pm On Sep 02, 2013
The Nigerian movie industry otherwise known as Nollywood is poised for a showdown as the Association of Nollywood Core Producers,ANCOP, has petitioned EFCC and SFU over the N50 million largesse donated by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State to support the industry

The association is alleging massive fraud in the disbursement of the fund. It has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) to investigate the matter

According to a copy of the petition made available to HVP, signed by the association’s President, Comrade Alex Eyengho, the group is asking the agencies to invite the National President of the Association of Movie Producers, AMP, Zik Zulu Okafor, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, DGN, Andy Amenechi; the Secretary General of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Yakubu Abubakar and actress Stephanie Okereke- Linus Idahosa for obtaining the fund and disbursing it without the consent of the industry’s stakeholders.

Part of the petition dated August 19, 2013 and addressed jointly to the EFCC and SFU, read thus:

“On June 15, 2013, news broke out that some Nollywood stakeholders under the auspices of a non-existent ‘Guild of Nollywood Stars’ visited Governor Akpabio in his office in Uyo for the purpose of collecting the N50 million pledge to Nollywood.

“The Governor presented to the visitors a prototype post-dated (25-06- 2013) Zenith bank cheque number 00063639 with Akwa Ibom State Government as the account name, issued in favour of Guild of Nollywood Stars. “We also gathered that the Governor, in his usual generosity, gave each of the visitors N500, 000 cash. “Expectedly, the massive publicity given to the entire episode by the press generated heated debates. In fact, it polarised the industry till today.

“Suspecting fraud, ANCOP immediately raised the red flag when it queried the use of a non-existent ‘Guild of Nollywood Stars’ to access the N50 million pledge, by those who visited Governor Akpabio.

“We are demanding that you immediately commence a full-blown investigation into the alleged fraudent act over the N50 million Governor Akpabio gave to Nollywood to carry out a specific task but now domiciled in the account of one of the the over 30 associations and guilds in Nollywood…Sir, anything short of this is an invitation to anarchy in Nollywood.”

PoliticsNelson Mandela Discharged From Hospital by ajasbaba(op): 1:16pm On Sep 02, 2013
Mr Mandela’s discharge this morning from Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital comes a day after confusion in the Mandela family over whether the 95-year-old former president had in fact been sent home.

Mr Mandela, whose condition is described as “critical" and "at times unstable," was admitted to hospital June 8 suffering from a recurring lung infection.

His home in the upscale Houghton neighbourhood of Johannesburg, already fitted with a hospital-like clinic, has been reconfigured to allow him to receive intensive care there, according to the statement issued by South African President Jacob Zuma’s spokesman.

Mr Mandela’s doctors “are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria.” “If there are health conditions that warrant another admission to hospital in future, this will be done,” the statement said.

PoliticsPoliticians Hijack APC Membership Registration In Anambra by ajasbaba(op): 1:42pm On Aug 21, 2013
The ongoing membership registration exercise by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has ran into some hitches, as party stalwarts from the three merged political parties are trying to hijack the process.

Ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state, THISDAY gathered that the interim leadership of APC has directed that membership registration be allowed to commence in the state.

However, some officials sent from the headquarters of APC in Abuja to oversee the registration exercise in the state had reported that some persons had already started organising registration of members in different localities.

Also, the officials said some of the leaders of the former three parties had decided to constitute their own structures at the ward and local council levels and are using such structure to woo people to register as APC members.

A source said the party officials discovered that in some places the politicians had already printed and issued different versions of APC registration materials to their supporters without the approval of the national headquarters.

"Some of the leaders have started doing registration without the approval of the party and some have even gone ahead to set up illegal structures of APC in the various local government areas, " he said.

THISDAY learnt that the matter has been brought to the notice of the interim national leadership which is planning to take urgent steps to arrest the confusion before it spill-over into campaign arrangement for the gubernatorial contest.

It was further learnt that the party leadership had anticipated the brewing rancour, hence its decision to convene a fence-mending meeting tomorrow to try to rally support for the interim leadership, especially as it embarks of the setting up of party structures in the states and local council areas.

It has also set up a committee headed by Alhaji Bello Masari meant to work out modalities for setting up party structures is to meet tomorrow to draw-up a roadmap.

Wednesday's meeting will have all the top leaders of the party in attendance, including former national and state officers of the three political parties, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progress Change (CPC) and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) that formed APC in attendance.

While speaking to journalists shortly after its first formal meeting of the interim leadership in Abuja, the National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, had warned those printing forms and calling rallies in the name of APC to desist from doing so as they have no authority to do so.

"We feel it is creating some misunderstanding. People are anxious to be part of APC but because the party has never given a directive, some people were just talking on behalf of the party without authority. We are putting a stop to that.

Akande also warned that henceforth statements about APC should emanate for the office of the party's Publicity Secretary, adding that the Publicity Secretary statements can reflect the true position and mind of the party.

" We are warning all people who are arrows ting to themselves chairmanship of APC in the states and local government areas to desist from doing so because they are unauthorised.

"All those who printing forms and calling rallies in the name of APC are also not authorized to do so.

He urged the party supporters should exercise patience until the constitution of party structures so that authority can flow down to every level.
PoliticsDHQ Recommends Boko Haram Members For Trial by ajasbaba(op): 1:31pm On Aug 21, 2013
Team, Tuesday advocated the need to try the detained members of the Boko Haram sect in court for the crime they committed in the last four years.

The team lamented that the colossal lose of lives and property in the last four years in the country as a result of the sect’s insurgency.

The Chairman of the team, Brig. Gen. Abdulkadir Abubakar, leading other members of the team on a courtesy visit to Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, said the team observed from information available to it that a lot of lives and property had been lost.

He said the insurgency was regrettable, while also disclosing that the Defence Headquarters had sent them "to explore ways of handling cases of those detained for judicial option in line with laid down rules."

Abubakar revealed that the Joint Investigation Team comprises officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, State Security Service (SSS), police, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Immigration and lawyers from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and that of Commissioners of Justice from Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States, said the team would study the detention files of all suspected Boko Haram insurgents and categorise them according to their level of involvement in the series of bombings, killings and attacks that have claimed the lives of over 3,000 people.

"Since our arrival, the team has done some work and we have noted the colossal lost of lives and property and also the high-handed indoctrination of youths and followers of the insurgents that are committing or has committed the dastardly act.

"We are expected to classify the detainees for prosecution or as witnesses or for further investigation, deportation or as the case may be, to determine the offences of suspects that could be tried either by the federal or states’ courts and make any other deemed recommendation that may be necessary," he said.

Abubakar promised that the team was capable of making diligent compilation and process that would ensure justice at the end of the day under the constitution and rule of law.

He also said some of the suspects would be tried at the state courts while others would be tried at the Federal High Court."

In his remarks, Shettima commended the Defence Headquarters for the quality of officers and men in the team, adding that it was the first time it (Defence Headquarters) would send such calibre of people to the state for investigation of the Boko Haram suspects.

The governor also said the state had the highest number of detainees even, as he urged the team to give justice to the detainees.
"Selective justice to a few is an injustice to all," he said.
SportsNFF Broke, Spends N1.5bn In Seven Months by ajasbaba(op): 11:34am On Aug 21, 2013
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is flat broke after spending N1, 572,052,396 in seven months, THISDAY Sports gathered Tuesday.

The federal government allocated the capital sum of N1.9billion to the football body as overhead and personnel budget for the current year. But from facts made available to THISDAY Tuesday, the federation is only waiting for the course of the year to lapse, having expended more than N1.5 billion by the end on July on its elaborate sporting activities.

The approved overhead cost for the ‘’Glasshouse’’ for the year is N1.8billion.The financial challenges of the NFF are in the purview of the public.

According to reliable sources at the football federation, the Confederations Cup in Brazil and FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, were two main expensive activities for Nigeria in the second half of the season.

The conservative cost of prosecuting the campaigns, both which overlapped in the month of June is put at N295 million. But the cost pales in relative comparison to the money spent campaigning at the Africa Cup of Nations early in the year in South Africa.

Though the Super Eagles clinched the Africa Cup of Nations title for the first time after a 19-year wait, the estimated cost of attending the tournament alone is put at more than N700m.

The overhead cost in South Africa was one of the reasons that informed NFF to reduce the Super Eagles bonuses in addition to cutting down on the strength of the back-up technical staff in March this year as NFF claimed its resources were lean.

For instance the Eagles were paid N172 million as bonuses through the quarter finals at the Africa Cup of Nations. In addition, about N70million was paid on accommodating the team in Faro, Portugal before the start of the tournament.
PoliticsINEC Accuses Parties Of Promoting Thurggery, Rigging by ajasbaba(op): 11:24am On Aug 21, 2013
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, Tuesday upbraided political parties, accusing them of arming youths with dangerous weapons and buying them drugs to aid electoral violence and rigging of elections.

He also urged political parties to engage in campaign of issues instead of unnecessary name calling during electioneering campaigns.

Jega, who was speaking at a confidence-building workshop with women and youths of political parties in Abuja, said: “Youths are misused; if not abused, politicians provide arms and drugs for the youths. This should not be allowed to happen. Politics is not a do-or-die affair. Electoral contests should not be seen as a war situation and the bottom line is if politicians buy arms and drugs to the youths, it would not argue well for our electoral process. But, INEC will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute offenders, if they are caught.”

The INEC chairman, who described the activities of political parties due to the military tendencies of politicians, lamented that they behave like ‘military garrison commanders’ because of their imposition of candidates that did not win elections.

Jega, who lamented the absence of internal democracy within the political parties, said political parties were presenting candidates that did not win elections at the primary elections.

According to him, “We monitor the primary elections of the political parties, but the candidates presented by the parties to us are not the candidates that we saw win elections during the primaries that we monitor. Some of them behave like garrison commanders. This is not good for the system and development of democracy in the country.”

On the multiple voting by the electorate during elections, Jega said, henceforth, those he described as 'dead persons' would not be allowed to vote.

He said: “We have a credible voting system in place. A situation where politicians buy up the voter’s card and give it to people to vote will no longer happen, even where you cut off the thumb of the owners of the card. All voters with voting cards must pass through the card reading machines, so dead people will no longer vote.”

In an apparent reference to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where its former National Youth Leader, Alhaji Giza Umar, was about 60 years, the INEC chairman said the youth leaders of political parties were expected to be within the age limit of between 18 and 35 years.

He also said a group, the Alliance for Credible Alliance (ACE), had complained that some political parties allegedly appointed over aged Nigerians as youth leaders.

While stressing the commitment of INEC to monitor campaign expenses, Jega said: “Nobody wants to see violence in the electoral process. So, we have a responsibility to do everything possible to keep on taking adequate measures to minimise violence in the polity.

“We also have to do everything possible to minimise the use of money in the electoral process. In INEC, we are doing our best as we move towards 2015, so that we can effectively monitor the expenditure by candidates of parties as we move towards 2015.

“It is clear that there are certain limits imposed in the legal framework as to how much candidates can spend during electoral campaigns. Regrettable, we have not been able to monitor this in the past and we are doing our best so that as we approach 2015, we should be able to monitor campaign expenditures of candidates. This issue also involves lack of internal democracy in political parties.”

The INEC chairman further lamented the inability of the commission to prosecute electoral offenders, stating that where there was evidence of such offences, the judiciary failed to dispense justice.

He gave the example of a prominent politician from Bayelsa State, who was caught as an electoral offender, explaining that the politician in question went to court and obtained a court injunction against his prosecution by the commission.

According to him, “In Bayelsa State, we wrote to the Inspector General of Police and decided that the results from the area should not be accepted but what happened. Our job was not to implement. There has to be polices record. That person in question went to the court and got injunction stopping us from prosecuting him. We are accused of not prosecuting big fishes.”

On whether the two newly registered political parties; the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and the Independent Democrats (ID) could participate in the November 16 governorship in Anambra State, Jega said they could provided the two parties met the commission’s guidelines for the governorship election.

He said: “We have issued the guidelines, if they can compile, do their primaries in compliance with the legal provisions, if they have their structures on ground, then they can partake at the governorship elections slated for November 16.”
PoliticsAmaechi Swears In Acting CJ Amidst Criticisms by ajasbaba(op): 11:11am On Aug 21, 2013
GDI kicks, wants gov to resign for violating constitution
• Okocha: They’re ignorant of the law
Ernest Chinwo

The Rivers State Governor, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, Tuesday swore in a new acting Chief Judge of the state, Justice Peter Agumagu, to replace Justice Iche Ndu who retired from service last Monday.

But the appointment is already causing ripples as a group, Grassroots Development Initiatives (GDI), has called on Amaechi to resign for violating the constitution in the appointment of Agumagu.

Agumagu was sworn in during a brief ceremony at the Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt, Tuesday.
Until his appointment as acting Chief Judge, Agumagu was the President of the state Customary Court of Appeal.

While congratulating the new acting chief judge on his appointment, Amaechi urged him to discharge his responsibilities judiciously.

He said the acting chief judge would hold office pending when the National Assembly would approve the candidate recommended for appointment as the substantive chief judge by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The governor said: “Let me congratulate you on your appointment. I sat through the week with the state attorney general to review the appointment and we looked at the constitution and the constitution says the most senior judge of the High Court and we looked at your appointment as a judge of the High Court and compared it with the rest of the judges in the state and realised that you are the most senior judge of the high court of the state. We therefore took that decision to proceed with the appointment.

“I wish to congratulate you and say to you that you have an enormous assignment in these three months. We are proceeding with that while waiting for the resumption of the National Assembly and hoping that if they do approve the recommendation of the NJC, we will then proceed with that, and we hope that within the three months you are acting, you will discharge your responsibility.”

But the GDI, in its reaction, described the appointment as a rape of the constitution, adding that it was a way through which Amaechi planned to take over the judiciary.

The President of GDI, Bright Ameawhule, at a press briefing in Port Harcourt yesterday argued that Agumagu did not qualify for the office of acting chief judge of the state as he was not a judge of the High Court as specified by the 1999 Constitution.

He said since Agumagu was President of the Customary Court of Appeal, he could not be said to be the most senior judge of the state High Court as required by the Constitution.

“Justice Agumagu is not qualified, pursuant to section 271(4) of the 1999 Constitution, to be appointed the acting Chief judge of the state as he is not the most senior Judge of the High Court of the state,” he said.

According to Amaewhule, “Amaechi does not have the constitutional power (as much as he would wish he had) to appoint the Chief Judge of the state, be it in the substantive or acting capacity, outside the provision of section 271 of the constitution.

“Amaechi and Worgu Boms have just done that. They did that in connivance with Agumagu, whose hunger for the office of the Chief Judge of the state, in order to play effective lap poodle to Amaechi, knows no bound. At last, Amaechi can now use him as the point of contact in the state judiciary to terrorise perceived political opponents.

“We urge Amaechi who has a non-performing executive arm of government, a comatose legislature and who now seeks to destroy the state judiciary to voluntarily resign from office."

Amaechi is clearly a danger to democracy and the rule of law and shall continue to remain such a danger as long as he holds high political office.”

In his reaction to the position of the GDI, Chief of Staff of the Government House, Chief Tony Okocha, insisted that the governor acted within the law.

Okocha said: “I should not be responding to positions of nincompoops, who lack knowledge of the law. When people are not aware, they make such ignorant comments and judgments.

“The governor has powers to appoint an acting Chief Judge, even without recourse to the assembly and such appointment is, according to law, bound to last three months. Besides that, the governor is well aware of his rights and responsibilities, he’s not one of those who act with disregard for the law. Even while he was performing the swearing-in ceremony, he said a substantive appointment would be sworn-in if the National Assembly approves the recommendation of the NJC at its resumption from recess.”

But responding to the allegations and call by GDI, Okocha described those criticising the allegation as being unaware of the law and the workings of government.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the League of Rivers State Lawyers in Abuja, Mr. Timi Briggs, has said the swearing-in Justice Agumagu as the acting CJ Okocha whom the NJC had recommended for appointment as the CJ is a slap on the NJC.

Briggs in a statement issued in Abuja, said that the judicial arm of government is independent and as the last hope of the common man, her functions and processes should not be left in the hands of another arm of government for fear of being abused.

“This is what Gov Amaechi’s inordinate ambition will cause to the judiciary unless he is put under check.

“I see politics and executive interferences in this action by Amaechi to over reach and ridicule the NJC. By hurriedly swearing in a man who the NJC had rejected as unfit for the job of a Chief Judge, Amaechi has told the NJC to “go to hell.” We have nothing against Justice Agumagu but as lawyers, there is the urgent need to insulate the judiciary from Gov Amaechi’s political manipulations and influences. If this is not done, the essence of the judicial arm of government in a democracy will be destroyed,” he said.

He rapéd the girl in July last year when the youth of the church were having a special programme at night, but Damiolola’s mother said: “We did not know the girl was pregnant until January this year, while he (pastor) had hurriedly left in September 2012.”

The new church, which he started in Ikoyi area of Ikere-Ekiti, is said to be:

Attracting a lot of people, having succeeded in taking many members of the church where he pulled out.

According to Daily Sun, the embattled pastor had been organizing revival programmes and crusade, calling members of the public who were not aware of his atrocities to come for miracles.

The girl, Oluwadamilola (surname withheld) who until her ordeal was a SS1 student of a high school in Ikere-Ekiti, gave birth to a baby boy on May 26, while the man was still in detention, over the matter.

Damilola’s mother told Daily Sun that the father of the young pastor had entered a written agreement with the parents of the girl in March this year, promising that they would take care of the girl and her pregnancy but the lackadaisical attitude of the randy pastor compelled her parents to report the case to the police.

After he was granted bail, he organized a thanksgiving service in his church when his lawyer advised him to transfer the case from the Magistrate Court to High Court.

It was gathered that the middle-aged pastor was married, and this was the reason he hurriedly left the church in September last year when he realized the girl was pregnant and warned her not to let anybody know.

SportsDavid Moyes Already Giving Excuses Why United Might Not Win Premier League by ajasbaba(op): 4:19pm On Aug 16, 2013
David Moyes took a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s management book and last night criticised the Premier League over Manchester United’s opening fixtures.

The new Old Trafford manager has complained to the League, insisting: ‘I think it’s the hardest start for 20 years that United have had.

‘I hope it’s not because Manchester United won the League quite comfortably last season that the fixtures have been made much more difficult.’

Does Moyes have a point? Judge for yourself with a list of United's previous starts below

Concerns: Manchester United boss David Moyes has hit out at the start of the season handed to his team

Remember this? Moyes' Everton beat United on the opening weekend last season

Moyes, whose side play Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the first five weeks of the campaign, rang Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore directly to voice his concerns.

‘The old manager told me those sort of things happened,’ said Moyes last night. ‘I find it hard to believe that’s the way the balls came out of the bag, that’s for sure.’

His comment about Ferguson was meant as a joke but it is clear that Moyes genuinely did wonder if his team had been given a tough start on purpose.

The former Everton boss touched on the subject when he was unveiled as United manager back in July, but has now taken his comments to a level that will cause some of his rivals to raise eyebrows.

A Premier League spokesman last night confirmed that Moyes had raised the issue and said: ‘We assured him the process is random and above board. He accepted those assurances.’

United begin their League season with a tough trip to Swansea City tomorrow evening. This is followed by a home game with Chelsea and a visit to Liverpool.
Moyes added: ‘It is a hard start.

But if it is a hard start for Manchester United, it is a hard start for everyone else because they have to play us.

Good start: Louis Saha scored as United thrashed Fulham 5-1 on the opening day in 2006

‘It is as tough a start as Manchester United have ever had. I looked at that a little bit questionably when I saw it.’ Moyes did not shed any light yesterday on whether Wayne Rooney would play at Swansea, but he said he was pleased the striker came through an hour of action in England’s 3-2 win over Scotland on Wednesday.

‘He got his first competitive 65 minutes,’ said Moyes. ‘He hasn’t had any other serious action. It was a good game for him but I thought Danny Welbeck also had some good match action and I was pleased about that — and Tom Cleverley too. From that point of view it was good they got a run-out.

‘I couldn’t tell you about Saturday’s game now. When I get back I will see how he is.’

Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has questioned whether his side have become the latest victims of ‘big club syndrome’.

Chelsea won a battle to move their home game against Villa from August 31 to next Wednesday to accommodate their UEFA Super Cup match.

Lambert, whose side now face Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in a week, said: ‘All of a sudden, they tell us we’re getting jammed in between Arsenal and Liverpool when we had given them our preferred dates. I don’t think it’s fair — even after having it explained to me 45 times.'
