It was a moving scene. In the bathroom, the clung to each other. They were probably desperately seeking a way to escape the fire that gutted their home. They did not make it. Husband and wife were burnt to death.

Nobody knows how the mystery fire started yesterday in the palatial home of the Mr. And Mrs. Boniface Ndubuisi. Sympathisers only came and met the bodies of the multi-billionaire couple, who just returned home from abroad, in the bathroom of their 2, Arinze Lane, off Okolo Street, American Quarters, Onitsha, Anambra State home.

The building was said to have been razed before fire fighters could gained access into the compound. The couple’s valuables, worth billions of naira, reportedly went with the fire.

In a tension-soaked atmosphere yesterday, tongues wagged over the likely cause of the fire.

An eyewitness could not fathom how and where the fire started in the one-storey building, but confirmed that it started about 4am.

The couple, The Nation learnt, had six children; three in America, two in Abuja and one in Lagos.

The eyewitness said the couple’s bodies were found inside their bathroom, clinging unto each other.

The Divisional Police Officer, Onitsha Central Police Station, Mr Tope Fasugba has visited the scene with his men. He said the incident is being investigated.

The police, it was learnt, have taken the bodies to the morgue in Onitsha.

Many blamed the incident on power surge from Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). Fire fighters strived to prevent the fire from spreading to other compounds.

we will be attempting to have a national election and we are worried that insecurity is growing, corruption is growing. Boko Haram will go on flexing muscles in the North. So, the North will be unsafe for southern politicians to go and campaign there. From next year, no southern politician will have the courage to go to the North to campaign. Similarly, the northern politicians will not feel safe to come down to the south to campaign. What it means is that politicians will not be able to play politics in any part of the country they wish. In other words, America does not even need to remind us of their doom prediction. We are already walking towards it.

The Federal Government has announced Julius Berger AIMS Consortium as the preferred bidder for the construction of the Second Niger Bridge that is to connect Delta and Anambra states.

The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, stated this in Abuja on Friday after hours-long meeting with delegates from the consortium and various government agencies.

According to him, five construction firms took part in the bidding process, but Julius Berger AIMS Consortium won.

He said, “We have gone through a painstaking procurement process that lasted for about 13 months and at the end of the procurement the preferred bidder has emerged. It is important to let Nigerians know that very competent consortia bid for this particular project.

The leadership crisis in the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Tuesday took a new dimension as one of the key actors in the conflict and leader of a faction of the sacked National Executive Committee, Alhaji Sadeeq Massalla, recognised the new interim National Chairman, Mr. Maxi Okwu.

Massala until Tuesday was the Acting National Chairman of APGA appointed by factional NEC, on July 16th, 2012 to battle the leadership of APGA led by Chief Victor Umeh.

The former national Vice Chairman of APGA (North Central) who was conspicuously absent at last Saturday’s national caucus of the party in Abuja, where Okwu and Alhaji Sanni Shinkafi were elected as Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary, respectively, had Monday denounced the caucus meeting which produced new leaders for the party, describing it illegal and unconstitutional.

Giving reasons for the sudden turn-around, Massala told reporters that he changed his position on the matter after studying the Enugu High Court Judgement and was properly briefed by his lawyers.

Massalla who was accompanied by Maxi Okwu said he has reverted to his former position as the Deputy National Chairman, North of the party.
