Lazy nigerian doctors .
This is how a serious doctor should be :
George Q. Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School and the Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine at HMS, is an internationally recognized leader in stem cell science and cancer biology. He is also a longtime member of the HMS faculty whose work spans the fields of basic science and clinical medicine.
Daley has been professor of biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology at HMS since 2010 and was an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2008 until he resigned in 2017 upon assuming the Deanship. He previously held, as its inaugural incumbent, the Samuel E. Lux, IV Chair in Hematology/Oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and was the Robert A. Stranahan Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at HMS.
A former chief resident in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (1994-95), Daley maintained an active clinical practice in hematology/oncology at Mass General and then at Boston Children’s, until assuming his administrative role as director of the Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation Program at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, a post he held until Jan. 2017.
He has served since 1995 as a member of the faculty of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST), since 2004 as a founding member of the executive committee of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and since 2009 as an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and as a core faculty member of the Manton Center for Orphan Disease Research at Boston Children’s.
Daley’s research focuses on the use of mouse and human disease models to identify mechanisms that underlie blood disorders and cancer. His lab aims to define fundamental principles of how stem cells contribute to tissue regeneration and repair and improve drug and transplantation therapies for patients with malignant and genetic bone marrow disease.
Beyond his research, Daley has been a principal figure in developing international guidelines for conducting stem cell research and for the clinical translation of stem cells, particularly through his work with the International Society for Stem Cell Research, for which he has served in several leadership positions, including president (2007-08). He has also testified before Congress and spoken in forums worldwide on the scientific and ethical dimensions of stem cell research and its promise in treating disease.
After earning his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Harvard in 1982, Daley went on to earn his PhD in biology (1989) at MIT, working in David Baltimore’s laboratory at the MIT-affiliated Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.
He received his MD from HMS, graduating in 1991 with the rare distinction of summa cum laude. He then pursued clinical training in internal medicine at Mass General and was a clinical fellow at Brigham and Women’s and Boston Children’s hospitals. While running a laboratory as a Whitehead Fellow at the Whitehead Institute, he joined the HMS faculty as an assistant professor in 1995. He was promoted to associate professor in 2004, was named to an endowed chair at Boston Children’s in 2009 and became a full professor at HMS in 2010.
Daley's teaching efforts include serving as course director for the Molecular Medicine course at HMS and for an undergraduate course on stem cells in disease in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Earlier, for more than a decade, he led the Research in Health Sciences and Technology course in the HST program. He has trained dozens of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and is a frequent participant in seminars and grand rounds at schools and hospitals in the Boston area and beyond. In 2012 he was recognized with the HMS A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award.
Important contributions from the Daley laboratory have included the creation of customized stem cells to treat genetic immune deficiency in a mouse model (together with Rudolf Jaenisch), the differentiation of germ cells from embryonic stem cells, the generation of disease-specific pluripotent stem cells by direct reprogramming of human fibroblasts, and demonstration of the role of the LIN28/let-7 pathway in cancer. In past research, he demonstrated the central role of the BCR/ABL oncoprotein in human chronic myelogenous leukemia, work that provided critical target validation for development of Gleevec, a highly successful chemotherapeutic agent.
Daley was an inaugural winner of the National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award for highly innovative research (2004). His numerous honors include the American Philosophical Society’s Judson Daland Prize for achievement in patient-oriented research, the American Pediatric Society’s E. Mead Johnson Award for contributions to stem cell research, the American Society of Hematology’s E. Donnall Thomas Prize for advances in human-induced pluripotent stem cells and the International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation’s Janet Rowley Prize for outstanding lifetime contributions to the understanding and/or treatment of the disease. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, among other professional societies.

afrodoc2: I never said that no one has PhD in medicine.
What i said is that it is not a requirement to teach.
For instance the current heads of Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Dermatology at Harvard Medical School do not have PhD.
All they have is their medical degree and their fellowships.
This thing doesn’t affect me cos i left the country long ago, but it makes no sense.
They focus too much on titles and flash in that country, rather than substance. This is not the way to mprove medical education in the country. This is the almighty dean of Harvard’s college of medicine

afrodoc2: So PhD is the one that is more standard? What people are buying in Naija while barely stepping in class?
Also who will be the supervisor for all these specialists that suddenly have to go for PhD in order to teach medical students.
If they enforce this useless rule there won’t be enough lecturers to go round. Many universities might have to close down their colleges of medicine due to inadequate number of lecturers. Then fewer people would graduate as medical doctors. Then you people will be happy as you will need to depend on herbalists and witchdoctors. Did you buy your mbbs? |

This is exactly what is practiced abroad. In America, using basic medical/dental degree to apply for a lecturing job(Faculty Job) qualifies you for the position of Assistant Professor. Are you cleared now? You don’t know anything . A resident is a doctor taking training to become a consultant ( fellow) and it’s 3-4 years for the serious once. |

Kolping: NUC Develops Academic Postgraduate Programmes in Medicine 25 June 2018 https://www.nuc.edu.ng/nuc-develops-academic-postgraduate-programmes-in-medicine/
In its bid to meet the academic postgraduate requirements of Nigerian University System, the National Universities Commission (NUC), has developed academic postgraduate programmes in medicine. The programme is designed to award Masters, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Medicine (MD).
The Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, mni, MFR, FNAL highlighted the general need to overhaul the medical curricula for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
He said this at a meeting with some Deans of Post Graduate schools and Provosts of Colleges of Medicine of Nigerian Universities last Wednesday in the Commission.
In his address, the Executive Secretary stressed the need to enhance and refresh the medical profession, hence the decision by the Commission to assemble experts in the medical profession to develop the curriculum which include graduates of Medicine and Dentistry who were lecturers currently on their fellowship, could now undertake their PhD concurrently with some concession.
He said it was necessary to re-introduce the option of MD by publication to provide opportunity for many Professors to keep contributing new knowledge for as long as they wanted without the rigors of interfacing with any supervisor.
Professor Rasheed informed the meeting that the PhD was not a replacement of the fellowship training in the medical field but an option to the medical profession as a whole. It would henceforth be a pre-requisite for any medical professional that wanted to pursue the teaching career.
He explained that the said doctorate degree was strictly for the graduates of medicine and not for other science disciplines which could be acquired not only through thesis but also through publications in high impact journals.
He stressed that every scholar shall publish a minimum of 5 articles on the same topic and the publication date must not be earlier than the date of registration for the programme.
The 3 categories of people that would be allowed to get a PhD included:
1. Those that must have enrolled in the fellowship programme of either the national or West African medical schools and successfully passed the part one of either or both and embark on the part 2 without a Masters degree can be allowed to start their part 2 and enroll for a PhD too. The student should be expected to work on the 2 projects at the same time but can be given a very good concession from the National Post Graduate Medical College to serve as incentive.
He added that if a student registered for fellowship in medical college and he/she completed the PhD before he/she submit himself for the final exam in Lagos and had successfully defended the PhD thesis, the medical college could examine him on several other issues but waive the thesis requirement and adopt the PhD thesis in its place.
2. Those Fellows who want to have a PhD in addition to other qualifications could register for the programme without any requirements or course work, but would be required to write a thesis within specified period under the supervision of a very reliable lecturer.
3. And those who were not interested in becoming fellows but have very good MBBS degrees but want an MSc and a PhD.
The Executive Secretary also commended the leadership of MDCN (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria) for sheathing their swords and joining in the intense discussions on matters that they were very passionate about and advised that coming together to develop the health sector was more important than being at loggerheads, as NUC and other professional bodies were all geared at championing the same course.
He also informed them that there was need for MDCN and NUC to meet and discuss appropriate undergraduate admission quota for colleges of medicine.
He expressed his gratitude to all of them present on their doggedness at maintaining a very impressive standard in the medical education.
In his speech, the Director, Directorate of Academic Planning, Dr. Gidado B. Kumo, said that the meeting with Deans of Post Graduate schools and Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigerian Universities was very necessary because they were authorities in the matter and had to be kept abreast of any development on issues pertaining to requirements for admission into any degree awarding programme.
He said the Commission needed to discuss with them as stakeholders to arrest any area of difficulty that a student might come across in his university in the pursuit of his PhD and also make them the Commission’s ambassadors when matters arise in their respective university Senates.
The Executive Secretary, Medical Schools for Africa and Provost, University of Ibadan Medical School, Professor E. Oluwabunmi Olapade – Olaopa on behalf of the Deans and Provosts present, thanked the Executive Secretary, NUC for introducing the doctor of medicine MD option into the medical practice in Nigeria. He agreed that medical education was a continuum and therefore a PhD for the medical school was very important in order to reverse the dearth of doctors in the society and keep the system as fresh as possible.
He added that though research was important, of greater importance was establishing a link between the research from the PhDs and the clinical medicine, to know the impact of your research clinically.
He hoped that the standard of the qualification would be of high quality and urged the lecturers to continuously participate in the supervision of the doctorate thesis, regardless of whether they belonged to the clinical field or basic sciences, to promote synergy and continuous training that will ensure the profession boasts of more doctors with research degrees.
Professor Oluwabunmi particularly stressed the need to keep doctors in-country and provide them with the same degrees they go to seek in other countries. While keeping them busy with the PhD and MD degrees, they should be encouraged to write publications and keep adding knowledge and value to the medical field. This, he said would drive the development of effective health systems nationwide.
Present at the meeting were Provosts of some Colleges of Medicine and some Deans of Post Graduate Schools of Nigerian universities. The NUC Team included, Dr. Gidado Bello Kumo, Pharmacist Audu, Mrs. Nwosu and other staff of the Directorate of Academic Planning. Please whoever has commented in front page should please edit , and paste this . If most people against the PhD has seen this their ignorance would have been contained before this madness I have read . Gr8amechi: Yes doctors in residency write thesis as a minimum requirements to be awarded a fellowship try and Google it. Nigeria law that established the national postgraduate medical college equated it to a postgraduate medical university responsible for postgraduate training of specialist medical doctors.
To become a fellow you must have done work that is rich and adds to scientific knowledge, most of you arguing do not really understand how medicine is structured Hehehe ... not as rigorous as a PhD research work, maybe masters. Go to Quora, this thing has been treated extensively there. |

0m0nnakoda: The reason why doctors should have an exception is Medicine is a practical profession. All over the world when doctors qualify they often choose to SPECIALIZE specialization is a practical pathway and a Specialist doctor is at the top of his game A Phd can go through a year without writing a single prescription ot touching a patient with his hands
Thus only a tiny number of doctors do Phds and in some specialties none do. Around the world specialist doctors linked to medical schools are given Honorary Lecturerships That is the nature of medicine Doctors doing Orthopaedics need to go to Igbobi to train under specialists not Phds
The key word is TRAINING
How many universities courses can be described as TRAINING? That’s fine. But those who wants to lecture in the university( not honorary ) should have a PhD , their student can then go to clinics to me the consultants. It’s the same thing we are saying. Doctors should know that their game is up and should stop blackmailing others to achieve their aim. We have watched on the sideline how they blackmail and manipulate johesu to get a different salary scale and cmd by going to strike when johesu wants to negotiate even after returning from strike to press their deman which they later got.nor they want to do same for other disciplines! No way. Get ur PhD or remain in clinics as consultants to teach practically when students meet u there, simple . Know this, it’s only in medicine in Nigeria that public institution pay far higher that private institutions. An average doctor in private hospital see teaching hospital as their chevron , it should be the other way round. Something is not right. |
