The staggering ₦202 billion revenue shortfall recorded by Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies in Q1 2025—despite a massive 106% hike in billing—is nothing short of a national disgrace. This is the clearest evidence yet of a broken, exploitative, and grossly inefficient system. DisCos continue to charge Nigerians exorbitantly for power they neither supply reliably nor meter accurately. Unmetered billing, load rejection, and decaying infrastructure have become the norm, while critical investment is nonexistent. Nigerians are being punished for the incompetence of private firms that have failed in their obligations. This daylight extortion must end. We demand urgent reforms, full metering, accountability, and consistent power delivery—not more bills for darkness. |
This brazen wave of defections from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is nothing short of a betrayal—not just of party loyalty, but of the democratic ideals Nigerians have fought so hard to uphold. It is a cynical, opportunistic maneuver that underscores the utter decay of political integrity in our nation. To shamelessly label the PDP a “social club” and deride its electoral efforts, while fleeing to a ruling party, is not an act of reform or patriotism—it is naked self-interest masquerading as political strategy. These defections are not rooted in ideological convictions or a principled stand for the people. They are driven by personal ambition, hunger for patronage, and an insatiable lust for power. Such defections corrode the very foundation of a functional democracy. A robust multiparty system depends on the strength of opposition parties to check the excesses of those in power. By hollowing out the opposition through calculated desertions, we are turning Nigeria into a one-party state by stealth. This is not democracy. It is creeping authoritarianism dressed in the garb of electoral freedom. Worse still, the defection of former candidates, party executives, and key figures who once sought the people's mandate under the PDP now reveals a political class with no allegiance to vision, policy, or principle. What becomes of the voters who entrusted them with their hopes, believing they stood for something different? They are left deceived, abandoned, and betrayed. This unprincipled carousel of party-switching shatters trust in the political process. It signals to young Nigerians that politics is not about service or reform, but about survival and personal gain. It deepens cynicism, fuels voter apathy, and fractures any attempt at building credible institutions. If we must salvage what remains of our democracy, this culture of political prostitution must be condemned in the strongest terms. Nigeria deserves leaders with conviction, not chameleons who change colors at the scent of power. History will not be kind to those who traded the nation's democratic promise for thirty pieces of silver. |
The Federal Government appears poised to embark on yet another costly venture—an initiative that, if history is any indication, is likely to become a monumental waste of public funds. Time and again, we have witnessed projects launched with fanfare and lofty promises, only to be abandoned at approximately 90% completion. These unfinished projects are left to decay, becoming symbols of inefficiency and mismanagement. Then, after several years—typically with the arrival of a new administration—we are told that efforts are underway to "revive" the project. What follows is a recycled narrative of hope, feasibility studies, and fresh funding allocations. And so, the cycle of waste, neglect, and empty rhetoric continues, with little regard for accountability or sustainable development. |

It was learnt that the incident which took place on Tuesday at the premises of the station located along Ijoka Road in Akure has further exposed the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria. Mr Tokunbo Opebi, the acting chairman of an Akure-based radio station Breeze 91.9 FM, has been accused of beating and assaulting a former member of staff of the station Mercy Okafor for tendering his resignation letter. It was learnt that the incident which took place on Tuesday at the premises of the station located along Ijoka Road in Akure has further exposed the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria. Source privy to the incident mentioned that Okafor joined the station as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) corps member but was offered employment by the station after she completed her service. “Mercy Okafor is a bundle of talent. She is Igbo but she has a Bachelor’s degree in Yoruba language.I heard her mum is from Ile-Ife; her versatility and her command of Yoruba Language attracted people to her. They begged her to stay after her service.” the source said. According to the source, when the station's accountant, Bisola Agbayewa, gave birth and went on maternity leave, Okafor was asked to fill in for her, which she did admirably. When the leave expired, the accountant did not return and instead resigned, so Okafor became both an accountant and an OAP at the station. "Breeze 91.9 FM has the worst payment package of any radio station in Akure, Ondo State's capital," the source claimed. Up to 2024, some OAP earn as little as 25,000 Naira per month, while temporary workers are paid as little as 10,000 Naira, in direct violation of Nigerian labour rules and the Minimum Wage Act. These payments are not made on time or as scheduled. According to a credible source, some of the workers had not received full payment for the month of December as of February 5th, 2025. According to the source, Okafor submitted her resignation letter and notified the station's management of her plan to leave the organisation. When she finally turned in the company's data, all hell broke loose. The chairman reportedly told her she should have stayed until the station found a replacement, but she told him she had already given the station notice, which they had ignored. Infuriated by her courage, Tokunbo allegedly withdrew his shoe and struck the lady in the head before unleashing a barrage of blows on her. “It took the Intervention of Bimpa Dele-Mogaji and Joyin Johnson to free Okafor from the hands of Tokunbo who was throwing punches at the young lady,” the source said. “Tokunbo is responsible for almost all the woes that have happened to that station. If you stay you won’t get paid regularly, if you leave you might get arrested on trumped up allegations. Who has he not arrested and detained, from former engineer to marketer to OAP?" he lamented. “If you honourably tendered your resignation letter before the end of the month you will never get the salary for that month or any other outstanding pay." Mercy Ekene Okafor who is the victim of the recent physical assault has reportedly received treatments for internal injuries sustained from the assault. Her mother and some relatives came to Akure on Thursday to take her home to Ile-Ife for treatment. “No allegation of financial misappropriation was brought against her, Tokunbo simply said he beat her up like that because he didn’t like the tone with which she responded to him," the source said. Attempts made to reach the general manager of the station Sunday Ajongbolo and the acting chairman were unsuccessful.

The conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a complex and protracted crisis with roots stretching back decades. It's characterized by a multitude of armed groups, shifting alliances, and devastating consequences for the civilian population. It's crucial to understand that this isn't a simple war between two sides, but rather a tangled web of interconnected conflicts. Early Roots (Post-Colonial Era): The seeds of the current instability were sown in the post-colonial era, marked by weak governance, ethnic tensions, and competition for resources. The Rwandan genocide in 1994 significantly destabilized the region, with an influx of Rwandan refugees, including Hutu militias (Interahamwe), into eastern DRC. This led to the First Congo War (1996-1997), involving several neighboring countries and ultimately ousting Mobutu Sese Seko. The Congo Wars (1998-2003): The Second Congo War, often called Africa's World War, followed shortly after. It drew in multiple African nations, each with their own interests, and involved numerous armed groups vying for control of the DRC's vast mineral wealth. This conflict resulted in millions of deaths, primarily from disease and starvation, and left a legacy of deep-seated mistrust and violence. The M23 and Beyond (2009-Present): While officially declared over in 2003, the conflicts in eastern DRC never truly ended. Numerous armed groups continue to operate in the region, including the M23 (March 23 Movement), a primarily Tutsi-led rebel group that emerged in 2012. The M23's resurgence has been particularly destabilizing, leading to renewed fighting, displacement, and human rights abuses. Other prominent groups include the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Hutu militia group, and various Mai-Mai militias, often formed along ethnic lines to defend local communities. Key Drivers of the Conflict: Resource Curse: The DRC's vast mineral wealth (coltan, gold, diamonds, etc.) fuels the conflict. Armed groups and foreign actors exploit these resources, contributing to the cycle of violence. Ethnic Tensions: Competition for land and resources often exacerbates existing ethnic divisions, leading to intercommunal clashes. Weak Governance: The DRC's government has struggled to establish effective control over the eastern region, creating a power vacuum that armed groups have filled. Regional Interference: Neighboring countries have been accused of supporting various armed groups, further complicating the conflict. Land Disputes: Land ownership issues are a major source of conflict, particularly in densely populated areas. Humanitarian Crisis: The ongoing violence has created a severe humanitarian crisis. Millions of people have been displaced from their homes, facing food insecurity, disease, and sexual violence. The region also struggles with the presence of child soldiers and other human rights violations. International Involvement: The United Nations has a peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) in the DRC, one of the largest in the world. MONUSCO's mandate includes protecting civilians, supporting the peace process, and promoting human rights. However, its effectiveness has been debated. The Path to Peace: Finding a lasting solution to the conflict in eastern DRC requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes addressing the root causes of the conflict, such as resource exploitation, ethnic tensions, and weak governance. It also requires a commitment to dialogue and reconciliation among all stakeholders, including armed groups, the government, and local communities. Furthermore, international support is crucial for providing humanitarian assistance and promoting sustainable development in the region. |

In today's society, where various ministries are being established to address specific needs and demographics, it has become imperative to create a Ministry for Men Affairs. This urgent need arises from the alarming rise in mental, emotional, and physical pressures faced by men, which have devastating consequences. The increasing rate of suicide among able-bodied men in our society is a stark testament to this crisis. Men are often expected to embody strength and resilience, but this societal pressure can lead to suppressed emotions, mental health issues, and a sense of isolation. A dedicated Ministry for Men's Affairs would provide a platform to: - Address the unique challenges faced by men - Promote mental health awareness and support - Foster a culture of openness and vulnerability - Develop initiatives to improve emotional well-being - Provide resources for physical health and wellness - Encourage positive masculinity and gender roles By establishing this ministry, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for men to thrive, and ultimately, reduce the alarming rates of suicide and mental health issues affecting them. |
Super Eagles striker, Kayode Olarenwaju, has urged a Federal Capital Territory High Court to dissolve his marriage to his estranged wife, Ezinne, because it has broken down irretrievably. The Turkey-based footballer who is also seeking custody of their children, urged the court to order a UK-based pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, to pay him N1bn in damages for the emotional trauma, financial loss, and loss of goodwill caused by his “adulterous affair” with Ezinne. Olarenwaju and Ezinne have been engaged in a marital battle following allegations of infidelity, among other issues. The matter took another twist when Ezinne instituted legal action against her estranged husband. In the suit dated March 20, 2024, Ezinne accused Olarenwaju of making baseless allegations of infidelity and witchcraft against her and her mother, adding that Olarenwaju damaged her phone in the process. She said, “Upon arriving from Turkey personally and without prior notice to his wife or children, the Respondent rained abuses on the Petitioner and her mother, making baseless accusations of infidelity and witchcraft and trying to force the Petitioner out of her matrimonial home. In the process, the Respondent smashed the Petitioner’s iPhone 15 pro-Max beyond repair.” However, in a cross-petition marked PET/304/2024 filed on July 1, 2024, a copy of which was seen by our correspondent on Monday, the Super Eagles striker accused Ezinne of repeatedly committing adultery with the UK-based pastor and other men since their marriage in 2013. Ezinne and the UK-based pastor are the Respondent and Co-Respondent respectively in Olarenwaju’s cross-petition. The Super Eagles striker also claimed in his cross-petition that his estranged wife kidnapped their children, who were later rescued by the Department of State Services personnel. He said, “Whilst the Cross Petitioner was still trying to get his facts right and phantom a means to have all the lingering issues resolved, the Respondent, under the guise of going to church on March 24, 2024, abducted the children of the marriage and absconded to an unknown location in Abuja. The Respondent then informed his lawyer to write a petition to the DSS regarding the abduction of the children of the marriage. “Pursuant to the aforesaid petition, the DSS was able to track the location of the Respondent and got her arrested with the children of the marriage in her hideout somewhere in Brains and Hammers Estate, Abuja. The Respondent was subsequently granted bail.” Olanrewaju accused his estranged wife of undermining their joint business ventures. He said, “The Cross Petitioner in his bid to have a lifetime investment in Nigeria decided sometime in 2019 to incorporate a company and indeed incorporated DE- J-S Concept Ltd. as a vehicle for his investments in Nigeria and also made the Respondent a shareholder and a director. “ The Cross Petitioner thereafter purchased many properties from one realtor, Ugochukwu Igboanugo of Ziloc Constructions Limited, who was initially introduced to the Cross Petitioner by the Respondent and it was later discovered that the said Ugochukwu Igboanugo was an ex-lover of the Respondent. “Unknown to the Cross Petitioner, the Respondent has connived with the said Ugochukwu Igboanugo and collected all the property documents and has been solely and personally collecting rent proceeds from the properties, expending same on her amorous relationship with the Co-Respondent to the Cross Petition.” On why the court should grant him the custody of the children, Olarenwaju said, “The Respondent is not bothered with the educational and mental well-being and stability of the children of the marriage as the same is evident in her actions by having romantic and sex-related discussions with the Co-Respondent and other men in the presence of the children. Indeed, her absconding with the children whilst school is in session without regard to academics leaves much to be desired.” His reliefs read, “ An order for a decree of dissolution of the marriage between the Cross-Petitioner and Respondent/Petitioner on the grounds that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. “An order granting custody of the children of the marriage to the Cross-Petitioner with right of access to the Respondent. “An order against the Co-Respondent for the payment of the sum of N1,000,000,000 to the Cross Petitioner for the emotional trauma, financial loss and loss of goodwill occasioned by the adulterous relationship between the Co-Respondent and the Respondent.” The matter has been slated for hearing on September 24, 2024. https://punchng.com/super-eagles-player-seeks-divorce-demands-n1bn-damages-from-uk-based-pastor/?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=social |
No fewer than 25 persons, mostly women and children, were feared kidnapped by terrorists wearing hijab at the Runka community in the Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State. The PUNCH reports that Safana is one of the frontline local government areas ravaged by the activities of the hoodlums. Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums stormed the community in the late hours of Saturday in large numbers, shooting sporadically into the air to scare and intimidate the residents. According to a community leader who spoke with The PUNCH over the phone, the hoodlums moved from house to house, taking away residents into the nearby Rugu Forest. “One person sustained an injury during the process and was rushed to hospital for medical attention in the area,” the community leader said. Meanwhile, the authority of the local government council, led by the chairman, Abdullahi Sani Safana, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH. In a telephone conversation, the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, however, said he was yet to be briefed. “I am yet to be briefed on this incident, but, I will let you know once I am briefed, please,” Sadiq told our correspondent. More reports from other sources pointed out that the Divisional Police Officer in the local government had deployed a team in the area to bolster security in the community and help in the rescue efforts. According to a JTF source who volunteered information to The PUNCH, “Going by the way the operation was carried out, we have no doubt that there were strong insider dealings in the terror attack and kidnapping. I think informants are behind this attack.” https://punchng.com/terrorists-in-hijab-attack-katsina-community/?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=social

Mrtaye:Well, on the contrary, it's not for the extremely rich. This soak away is neither deep nor wide. An 8 year old can stand inside and get out without help. Anyone who could dig the big one for fecal waste should be able to dig this. I think it bothers on enlightenment and effective housing regulations. |
Mrtaye:Let's face reality. How many drainages are covered in this Nigeria? If you go through my comments here, I stated that there are soak aways specifically built to accommodate kitchen and bathroom wastes. They don't get filled up because the floor isn't plastered. The water gets absorbed by the surrounding soil. This is different from the septic tank where fecal/toilet wastes goes. The floor of those ones are plastered and can get filled up. Only toilet wastes goes in there. Mind you, channelling bathroom wastes into drainages either covered or not, causes water pollution during flood. |
The US has reached an agreement with Niger to withdraw its military forces from the African nation by September 15, according to the US Defense Department and the Nigerien Ministry of National Defense. The newly agreed deadline gives the US four months to drawdown fewer than 1,000 troops who remain in the country, as well as their equipment, which includes MQ-9 Reaper drones and other assets. But even as the deadline looms, US officials see potential for a relationship with Niger. “They want to maintain a relationship with us,” a senior defense official said, “and that relationship is certainly informed by where we’ve been with them.” Niger’s military government announced in March that it had ended an accord with the US that allowed military personnel and civilian staff from the Department of Defense to operate in the country. The US delegation met with Niger’s ruling military junta last week to try to reach an agreement that would allow for the secure withdrawal of US forces and for clearances for military flights. The flight clearances had been a sticking point in the sensitive negotiations needed to withdraw US forces. Until now, US troops who have left Niger took commercial flights, including as recently as last week, according to US officials. The remaining troops on the ground are tasked with drawing down US personnel and equipment still in Niger. The Defense Department has worked with the Nigerien military for more than a decade, focusing its efforts on counterterrorism in West Africa. The US previously operated out of two base – Agadez and Niamey – that allowed the Pentagon to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance missions with drones. Now, US forces are limited to the base in the capital of Niamey, where Russian forces have already begun operating. “Niger has been really an anchor for our counterterrorism efforts over a decade,” said the defense official, who said conversations on future cooperation are ongoing. But what that coordination looks like is an open question, especially as the US has already begun removing some of the 1,100 military personnel operating in the country. Defense officials painted an optimistic picture of a potential future relationship with Niger given the military junta’s demand that the US withdraws its forces from the country. The Nigerien military “did not see this as the closing of the relationship,” said a senior military official. The senior defense official and senior military official briefed reporters Sunday afternoon, following a series of meetings between US and Nigerien officials about the withdrawal. The US delegation was led by Chris Meier, the assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low-intensity conflict. The Nigerien delegation was led by Col.-Maj. Mamane Sani Kiaou, the chief of staff of the Nigerian army. “Both delegations confirmed the guarantees of protection and security to the American forces during their withdrawal. The delegations also established procedures to facilitate the entry and exit of U.S. personnel, including overflight and landing clearances for military flights,” the joint statement said. The US is still evaluating what military equipment will be left in Niger. “Obviously sensitive equipment, lethal equipment, hazardous equipment – these kinds of things will be removed,” the defense official said. Much of what the US anticipates leaving behind will not be “terribly mobile,” the official said, describing it as housing equipment and other kinds of life support. While Russian forces have been operating at the same base from which US forces are withdrawing, the US officials said they consider it unlikely that American equipment might fall into Russian hands. Your inbox is overflowing, tasks remain unfinished, and ideas abound, yet you persistently opt for a more leisurely activity - indulging in humorous animal videos and scrolling through Netflix options. If this scenario resonates with you, and you find yourself habitually procrastinating instead of being productive, then please continue reading. By the end of this article, you will discover four practical strategies to help you overcome procrastination and regain momentum, starting today. Procrastination is a universal experience, affecting even the most accomplished and inspirational individuals. Notable examples include the Dalai Lama, Mozart, and Leonardo da Vinci. Let us take Da Vinci as a case in point. While we marvel at the masterpiece that is the Mona Lisa, it is worth noting that it took him 16 years to complete. Da Vinci's propensity for procrastination was so renowned that one of his benefactors threatened to cut off his funding in order to prompt him to finish a commissioned work. You are, therefore, in good company. Even the most successful individuals struggle with procrastination. I, too, am guilty of this habit, having delayed writing this very piece. I knew I needed to produce it, yet I found myself staring blankly at a wall, doing nothing. The irony of procrastinating on a post about procrastination is not lost on me. This led me to investigate and explore the different types of procrastinators. According to UPMC, there are three primary categories: 1. Thrill Seekers: individuals who derive a sense of excitement from racing against deadlines and, therefore, procrastinate to intensify this experience. 2. Avoiders: those who delay tasks due to fear of judgment, regardless of whether their work is successful or unsuccessful. 3. Indecisive: procrastinators who postpone tasks to avoid accountability for subpar outcomes. Upon reflection, I identify as a Thrill Seeker, as I often delay tasks until the last minute, despite knowing I have the time and resources to complete them earlier. However, this approach leads to increased stress levels, which could be mitigated by tackling tasks promptly. This introspection led me to wonder: what drives procrastination? Research suggests that stress plays a significant role, as our brains are wired to prioritize relaxation. The limbic system and prefrontal cortex are in constant conflict, with the former controlling emotional and behavioral responses and the latter governing planning and decision-making. As the limbic system is more developed, our emotional and behavioral inclinations often take precedence, leading us to seek escape from stressful tasks. For instance, an overwhelming workload, coupled with personal worries, may prompt us to procrastinate, seeking temporary reprieve from our responsibilities. Upon recognizing the signs of procrastination, I have found the following four strategies to be effective in overcoming it: 1. Reflection : When you catch yourself procrastinating, take a moment to reflect on the underlying reasons. Are you worried about something else? Identifying the root cause enables you to address it and get back on track. Writing down your concerns can help you confront and manage them. 2. Task segmentation: Instead of viewing a task as a whole, break it down into smaller, manageable parts. Focus on starting with the bare minimum, and schedule a small amount of time for the task. This approach can help you build momentum and increase productivity. 3. Mindful reminders: Contrary to the phrase "out of sight, out of mind," keep your tasks visible and top of mind. Use reminders and break down large tasks into smaller, actionable steps. Ask yourself, "What is the bare minimum I can do to get started?" For instance, I prioritize reading 25 minutes daily for self-improvement. To ensure I follow through, I keep the book next to my nightstand as a constant reminder. 4. Strategic breaks: If you find yourself procrastinating, acknowledge it and take a break. Allow yourself 15 minutes to relax and recharge. During this time, you may find yourself thinking about the task ahead and feeling more motivated to start. I hope these strategies help you overcome procrastination and achieve your goals. |
Mrtaye:Yeah! I said bath water. Bathwater smells as a result of the soaps we use in bathing. Technically, the soaps make the bathwater smell. So, Imagine 10 households on a street using all kinds of soaps to bath, how do you think their drainage system will smell like? Bro, it all be inhabitable. |
Mrtaye:Haba bros, small small naw. Which drainage? You want make everywhere dey smell? You sef reason am, imagine everyone on your street channels their bath water to the drainage, how pleasant do you think it'll be? |
2Radii:Why won't you? Are you telling me that if you live in a comfortable 3 bedroom flat, you'll wash outside? Or you have a washing machine, will you carry it outside ni abi what is it you're saying sef? Or if you live on the third floor, you'll carry your laundry down to wash? Abeg, landlords should do the needful and not stress the hel out of their tenants. In building construction, only the toilet waste goes into the sceptic tank. Other wastes like kitchen and bathroom goes into a smaller tank. But in Nigeria, landlords will just build rubbish and make all waters go into the same sceptic tank. |
Mariangeles:Hmmmm. Here they come. Intimidated already? Always shasimg shadows. Ola meant something as grand as jewel and no Igbo name carries it? Gimme an Igbo name that carries OLA |
A ward is just one small section of a hospital. Even from the pictures above you can see how small the ward is. Must we commission everything in Nigeria no matter how small it is? Is this not the same state where 1 MRI machine was also commissioned? I hope we don't start commissioning tables and chairs in the future.
