MYSTERIOUS MAP OF NIGERIA SURFACE IN JOS CLOUD AROUND GADA BIU (RUKUBA ROAD) Around 6pm

In what will seem a Supernatural artistry that can only be linked with divinity especially at a time that Plateau state is Hoodwinked with unrest, a Map of Nigeria clearly defined in the sky surfaces in Gada-Biu along Rukuba road in Jos.

The picture was taken around 6pm, the exact time of the expiration of the dailuy curfew imposed by the Plateau state Government in Jos North, Bassa & Jos South LGAs.

Residents and passersbys were astonished and were full of praises to God in echoing that the significance of the artistic Map of NIGERIA in the cloud heralds a spiritual dimension to the bloodlet in the Home of peace and Tourism.

A silver lining to the myriad of bloodshed in the land is upon us.

Foreign AffairsAfghan’s Christians Have Gone Underground by Akell(op): 8:03pm On Aug 19, 2021
The minuscule community of Christian believers in Afghanistan has gone underground in fear of their lives after the hard-line Islamic Taliban returned to power this week in Kabul, an expert on persecution in the region said this week.

However, estimates suggest there are between 3,000 and 12,000 Christian believers in a nation whose population hovers around 38 million. Definitive numbers are difficult to come by, since publicly identifying as a Christian can subject an Afghan believer to beatings and death.

The return of the Taliban has sparked fears the Islamist insurgency will reimpose the strict Shariah-based law it followed when it ran the country in the years before the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. Non-Islamic faiths could be one of the first things targeted by the new regime as it consolidates power.

“There’s a lot of fear and uncertainty given the Taliban takeover of the country,” Will Stark, South Asia regional manager for International Christian Concern, an organization headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, said in an interview. “For Afghan Christians, that’s particularly scary or concerning for them, given their status as mostly converts from Islam.”

Mr. Stark said the only recognized religious minorities even before the U.S.-backed Afghan government collapsed were Hindus and Sikhs, permitted to “live as second-class citizens.” Christianity did not have official status, he noted.

“Even under the previous government, conversion from Islam was considered very shameful and could have fairly dire consequences for individuals who became Christians,” Mr. Stark said. He added that “Taliban ideology is much more fundamentalist and extreme” on the question of what the Islamists view as “apostasy” from the nation’s official faith.

“There’s a real concern amongst Afghan Christians that targeted killings will start happening because of their status as Christians,” Mr. Stark said.

“I’ve heard reports from people I know on the ground, that they’re receiving phone calls from unknown [telephone] numbers in which they’re being told, ‘We know who you are, and we are going to come for you.’ And that’s a direct threat and likely coming from Taliban fighters or maybe the Taliban itself, that they will be targeted, because of their faith identity.”

He said undercover Christian believers in the nation — no longer able to flee to neighboring Uzbekistan or Tajikistan — are given stark instructions on how to avoid getting on the Taliban’s radar.

“From what I understand, the folks who are not known [as Christians] are being advised to essentially lay low shelter in place, if you can change your phone number, change your address, go somewhere else, and just kind of lay low for a while if you can,” Mr. Stark reported. “Individuals who had things like Bibles or Christian literature have been told to bury it, dispose of it, and get rid of it. Because if you’re found with that, there is a concern that that could lead to, you know, them being killed for being in possession of a Bible.”

CrimeArmed Robbers Attack Bullion Van In Ondo, Gun Down Police Officer by Akell(op): 9:22pm On Aug 18, 2021
Armed robbers on Wednesday attacked a bullion van along the Akure/Owo Highway in Ondo State, shooting a policeman in the process.

The Public Relations Officer of Ondo State Police Command, DSP Funmi Odunlami, confirmed the attack, stating that it occurred close to Emure-Ile junction along the highway.

However, the robbers were unable to steal any funds as the bullion van was not carrying any cash when they struck, Odunlami added.

The injured policeman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated at the moment.

A team of policemen has also been deployed to the area to apprehend the armed Robbers

Foreign AffairsTaliban Says No One Will Use Afghan Territory To Launch Attacks by Akell(op): 12:39am On Aug 18, 2021
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid says group won’t allow territory ‘to be used against anybody or any country’.

The Taliban held its first official news conference in Kabul since the shock seizure of the city, declaring on Tuesday it wished for peaceful relations with other

“We don’t want any internal or external enemies,” the movement’s main spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, said.

The spokesman asserted that the rights of women will be protected within the framework of Islam.

The group previously declared an “amnesty” across Afghanistan and urged women to join its government, trying to calm nerves across a tense capital city that only the day before saw chaos at its airport as thousands mobbed the city’s international airport in a desperate attempt to flee.

Evacuation flights from Afghanistan resumed as a Western security official told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday that the Kabul airport’s tarmac and runway – which troops from the United States control – were now clear of crowds.

The official said military flights evacuating diplomats and civilians from Afghanistan have started taking off.

At least seven people died in Monday’s chaos, including several people who clung to the sides of a jet as it took off.

The Taliban has meanwhile declared the war in Afghanistan over and a senior leader said the group would wait until foreign forces had left before creating a new governance structure.

China said it was ready for “friendly relations” with the Taliban, while Russia and Iran also made diplomatic overtures.

HealthEbola Virus Disease: Disease Declared In Abidjan by Akell(op):
The Government of Republic of Côte d’Ivoire has declared the presence of a case of an Ebola virus disease (EVD) infection in the capital city of Abidjan. The case is 18-year-old Guinean girl who travelled from Labe in Guinea to Abidjan by road on 11August 2021 and hospitalized on the night of 12 August 2021 following a high-grade fever. On the 14th of August 2021, the Institute Pasteur in Cote d’Ivoire confirmed the infection to be EVD. The patient is currently in isolation and under the care of a Treatment Center for Highly Epidemic Diseases at the Treichville University Hospital.

More recently, on 19 June 2021, the Republic of Guinea declared over the EVD outbreak after four months of concerted effort.  However, further investigation will be conducted to trace back the relation between this case and the concluded outbreak.

“In this recent past outbreak in Guinea, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) assessed and supported neighbouring countries including Cote d’Ivoire in preparation for and response to potential spill over of cases. We witnessed the experience, expertise and resources in place in these countries to handle such incidents. However, as this case is reported in a busy capital city of Abidjan, Africa CDC is already in contact with senior health officials of the country to assess the situation and offer its expertise” said Dr John Nkengasong, the Africa CDC Director.

Following this confirmed case, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene and the Office of the Prime Minister called for an emergency meeting and put in place a swift multi-sectoral emergency response measures. These public health measures include: activation of different inter-sectoral coordination and emergency response units; reactivation of the community surveillance of the Ebola response; further investigation of the case, contact tracing; risk communication and community mobilization, immediate vaccination of target groups, strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures; and enhanced cross-border surveillance and collaboration with neighbouring countries.

In response to this new EVD case, the African Union Commission has been informed of the outbreak and is ready to offer a comprehensive support of all AU organs. The Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation; and will continue working with the Government of Republic of Côte d’Ivoire to deploy emergency response support team of experts, supplies and equipment as needed. It will also continue to work closely with the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to coordinate emergency preparedness in neighbouring countries across the region.

Foreign AffairsScotland To Let Pupils Change Gender Without Parent’s Consent by Akell(op):
The Scottish government has announced that children as young as four will be able to change their gender at school without their parents’ consent under guidance introduced in the country, Mail Oline reports.

It was disclosed that any pupil who decides they want to switch gender must be supported and listened to in school following the Scottish Government’s advice.

The guidance applies in primary schools, where the youngest children are only four or five, because ‘recognition and development of gender identity can occur at a young age’.

It also tells teachers not to question a child who says they want to transition to live as a boy or a girl and instead ask for their new name and pronouns.

Primary and secondary schools have also been told to put books featuring transgender people on the curriculum, allow pupils to choose which changing room or toilets to use, and consider introducing a gender-neutral uniform.

The guidance was branded ‘shocking’ and led to concerns that children are being allowed to make life-changing decisions at too young an age.

The advice says: ”Some young people are exploring their gender identity in primary school settings. Primary schools need to be able to meet the needs of these young people to ensure they have a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment in which to learn.”

A section on ‘changing name and recorded sex’ says children simply need to tell others informally that they want to use a different name, and that they don’t need to record this formally on their official school record. Advice to school staff on what to do if a child wants to discuss their gender includes asking ‘what name and pronoun you should use to address them’.

It also says that they should ask if their family is aware they are considering their gender identity, but does not suggest the teacher should contact them.

The guidance document also states that no Scottish law compels people to use the toilets that correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth.

PoliticsLawmakers To Replace FCT Minister With A Mayor by Akell(op): 12:57am On Aug 17, 2021
The House of Representatives is considering a constitution alteration bill to change the administrative structure of the Federal Capital Territory.

The bill, sponsored by Dachung Bagos (PDP, Plateau), seeks to remove the President as the Chief Executive Officer of the FCT and replace him with an elected Mayor, who will administer the FCT as the Chief Executive.

Mr Bagos’ bill is proposing the deletion of sections 301 (a and c) and 302 and introducing the new part II into the constitution.

The bill was introduced to the House on November 5, 2019.

Process of altering the constitution

A constitution amendment bill has to be passed by both Houses (Reps and Senate) with a minimum of 2/3rd of the entire members of the House.

The exception to the rule is state creation and boundary adjustment, which requires 4/5th of the members of each house to pass. The copies of the bill passed must be harmonised (The wordings, the structure must be the same.)

The harmonised bills passed by the two chambers will then be sent to the state Houses of Assembly. If 2/3rd of the Assemblies (24 states out of the 36 states) pass it, the copies will be returned to the National Assembly, which will then send it to the president for assent.

The president has two options; sign or decline.

Section 9 (1, 2) reads, “The National Assembly may, subject to the provision of this section, alter any of the provisions of this Constitution.

“An Act of the National Assembly for the alteration of this Constitution, not being an Act to which section 8 of this Constitution applies, shall not be passed in either House of the National Assembly unless the proposal is supported by the votes of not less than two-thirds majority of all the members of that House and approved by resolution of the Houses of Assembly of not less than two-thirds of all the States.”

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: Jacqueline Suowari: Nigerian Artist Drawing With Ballpoint Pen. by Akell(op): 12:24am On Aug 17, 2021
The power of the pen

Suowari's work is as motivational as it is aesthetically pleasing. Her huge creations share a message of hope and empowerment; their intention is to allow Nigerians to embrace vulnerabilities -- encouraging them to discuss issues, including mental health, that she says aren't in common discourse in Nigerian society.

"The Nigerian system kind of bullies you into shape," Suowari said, adding that she's trying to encourage people to be their authentic selves, whether that takes the form of acknowledging their own personal strife or joining huge political action, such as the EndSARS movement.

One of the pieces included in her latest body of work is an image of a woman wearing a traditional Ankara wax print dress and loosely styled dreadlocks. "One of the things that was the agitation for the EndSARS movement was the stereotyping of people based on their looks," said Suowari. "In Nigeria, if a policeman should find a woman dressed like that in the night, they would say she's a prostitute."

Suowari said that her vast portraits represent the faceless, voiceless masses; she wants to tell the stories of the minority and ostracized individuals to give them strength.

"I believe that everybody was created with a particular blueprint. It's like a puzzle -- you're supposed to be a certain kind of way to fit into the puzzle for better things to happen," she explained. "We can't make up this beautiful picture if everybody's the same."

Art for the greater good
Suowari's latest collection, "Now I Wear Myself," opened in Abuja on June 25. The exhibition will go on tour in October with the next showing in Lagos and further dates to be confirmed.

After a guest appearance on Rodney Omeokachie's "The Young God" podcast following the launch, Suowari said she was overwhelmed with messages of thanks for openly discussing subjects that she feels are unnecessarily taboo in Nigeria.

"I think the artist is some sort of prophet," she said. "Some sort of priestess, or pastor, or doctor that should be able to use their art as a tool to inform positive change in people's minds."

Suowari regularly receives emails from fans saying how her work has touched their lives. "I think for me that is the greatest achievement: being able to use your art as a tool to change people for the greater good," she said. "To inspire people to be better."

Art, Graphics & VideoJacqueline Suowari: Nigerian Artist Drawing With Ballpoint Pen. by Akell(op): 12:17am On Aug 17, 2021
From a distance, Jacqueline Suowari's larger-than-life portraits look like monochromatic photographs overlaid with colorful graphics. Upon closer inspection, you see these dramatic images are the culmination of thousands of tiny lines made using a simple ballpoint pen.

Suowari, 31, has been an artist since she was a child, practicing professionally for over a decade. She studied Fine Art at the University of Port Harcourt in southern Nigeria, and has participated in group exhibitions globally and had solo exhibitions in Miami and Nigeria.
Her work has been featured in several publications including Chukwuemeka Ben Bosah's book, "The Art of Nigerian Women," which celebrates female artists from the Nigerian diaspora.

This June she launched a touring exhibition of her new body of work entitled "Now I Wear Myself." In her new exhibition, Suowari considers the fetishization and condemnation of aesthetics associated with indigenous Nigerian cultures, and tries to destigmatize subjects that are often taboo in the country, like depression, grief and shame.

Philosophy with a ballpoint pen
As a child Suowari didn't know whether to be an artist, a poet or a dancer -- so she decided to be all three. "Somehow, I've been able to merge all these things together to form the Jacqueline Suowari experience," she laughed.

"I describe myself as a visual artist who specializes primarily with the ballpoint pen," said Suowari. Her practice is a combination of intricate drawings paired with bold Afro-urban painted elements in poppy, primary colors. These works -- often up to eight feet tall -- are accompanied by poetry and performance art.

"With my drawings, I have this philosophy of layering -- it's just a way that I pattern my strokes upon each other," explained Suowari. "I like to look at each stroke as the human experience. One experience, one stroke -- and the gathering, and layering, and falling together of all the strokes creates the person and their character."

Foreign AffairsMajor Airlines Reroute Flights To Avoid Afghan Airpsace by Akell(op): 6:54am On Aug 16, 2021
Major airlines are rerouting flights to avoid Afghanistan’s airspace after the Taliban took control of the presidential palace in Kabul as US-led forces departed and Western nations scrambled to evacuate their citizens.

United Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic said they were not using the country’s airspace.

A United spokeswoman said the change affects several of the airline’s US-to-India flights.

Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed few commercial flights over Afghanistan at 03:00 GMT on Monday while many planes were overflying neighbouring Pakistan and Iran.

Airlines and governments have paid more attention to the risks of flying over conflict zones in recent years after two deadly incidents involving surface-to-air missiles.

A Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 people on board, and a Ukraine International Airlines jet was downed by Iran’s military in 2020, killing all 176 passengers and crew.

The US Federal Aviation Administration in July imposed new flight restrictions over Afghanistan for US airlines and other US operators.

The FAA said flights operating below 26,000 feet were prohibited in the Kabul Flight Information Region, which largely covers Afghanistan, unless operating in and out of Hamid Karzai International Airport, citing the risk “posed by extremist/militant activity.”

The restrictions do not apply to US military operations.

Other countries, including Canada, Britain, Germany and France had also advised airlines to maintain an altitude of at least 25,000 feet over Afghanistan, according to the website Safe Airspace, which tracks such warnings.

Korean Air Lines said some of its cargo flights were using Afghan airspace, though its passenger flights were not.

“Due to the situation in Afghanistan, we are flying our cargo flights at higher altitudes,” a spokesperson said. “We are closely monitoring the situation and we plan to review shifting our routes if necessary.”

Taiwan’s China Airlines said it was keeping an eye on the situation and would adjust flight paths if needed in accordance with US and EU airspace instructions. It did not elaborate.

Commercial flights set to land in Afghanistan have also been affected by the chaos on the ground. Emirates has suspended flights to Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, until further notice, the airline said on its website.
Foreign AffairsMalaysia’s Political Turmoil: Five Things To Know by Akell(op): 6:45am On Aug 16, 2021
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to announce his resignation on Monday after a difficult 17 months in office.

Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to resign on Monday after a tumultuous 17 months in power marked by his government’s poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic and growing division within the ruling coalition, local media reports have said.

He is expected to inform the king of his decision after chairing his last cabinet meeting at 10am (02:00 GMT).

Muhyiddin, who has defied calls for him to step down, held a series of meetings with his party on Sunday after admitting in a televised address last week that he no longer had a majority to rule.

Afterwards, Mohamad Redzuan Yusof, a minister in the prime minister’s department, told online newspaper Malaysiakini that Muhyiddin had told the party he planned to resign the following day.

The political upheaval comes amid rising public anger at the continued surge in coronavirus cases despite months of various levels of lockdown.

Many Malaysians blame the government for spending too much time on politics and not enough time governing.

Some 12,510 people have died from the disease as overloaded government hospitals struggle to cope.

On Sunday, Malaysia recorded 20,546 cases on Sunday, its fourth successive day of more than 20,000 cases.

Who is Muhyiddin Yassin?
Muhyiddin, 74, is a veteran politician who began his career with the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) before jumping ship amid the tumult of the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal in 2015.

He became prime minister in March 2020, after a week of political turmoil triggered by a power grab within the then-ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition that led to the resignation of his predecessor, Mahathir Mohamad.

Following days of uncertainty, Muhyiddin convinced the king he had sufficient support among members of parliament to form an administration.

His Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition included his own Bersatu party – without founder Mahathir and his supporters – defectors from the previous administration’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat, as well as UMNO, Parti Islam Se Malaysia or PAS, the country’s Islamic party, and GPS, the ruling party in the Borneo state of Sarawak.

Muhyiddin’s cabinet included 70 people, the largest in Malaysian history, with four “senior ministers”. Some politicians were also appointed to prominent roles in government-linked businesses.

What went wrong?
Muhyiddin’s support and legitimacy have been questioned ever since he came to power.

As a result of a pandemic lockdown, it was not until July 2020 that parliament sat for the first time following the change in government. Muhyiddin survived a delayed budget vote with a majority of just two.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has claimed a number of times he has the support to rule but it is UMNO that has proved to be Muhyiddin’s biggest headache.

Part of the country’s political landscape since it was founded in 1946, the PN-era saw an emerging split in the party’s upper echelons.

While those holding prominent positions in the cabinet backed the status quo, other senior members – including UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Prime Minister Najib Razak – were more critical. Zahid is on trial on a slew of corruption charges while Najib was found guilty in the first of a series of 1MDB-linked trials in 2020.

Since September last year, the party has announced its withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin a number of times.

In July, hours before Zahid was expected to announce the party would no longer back him, Muhyiddin promoted Ismail Sabri Yaacob and Hishammuddin Hussein, the two most prominent UMNO politicians in his cabinet to senior roles. Sabri was named deputy prime minister.

Who could take over?
It is not clear who could emerge as the country’s next prime minister, given the fluid state of political loyalties.

The ructions could see UMNO’s return to pole position.

Among those in the frame are Ismail Sabri, despite his prominent role in handling the pandemic.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, a veteran UMNO leader, is also said to be a possibility.

On the opposition side, Anwar Ibrahim, may see this as his last chance to be prime minister, a position which has long eluded him.

Rather than focussing on who should be the next prime minister, the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) said politicians should be looking at an effective COVID-19 ‘reset plan’, measures to support the economy and institutional reform.

What about the king’s role?
Malaysia has a unique system of monarchy where the role of king is rotated every five years among the nine Malay sultans.

The current monarch, King Al-Sultan Abdullah, is from the central state of Pahang and took the throne in 2019.

It is a constitutional monarchy, but the king has become increasingly prominent since Muhyiddin took charge.

He met each member of parliament individually before being convinced Muhyiddin had the support to form a government but also rejected Muhyiddin’s first request for an emergency last year.

In June, amid the deepening COVID-19 crisis and continued political manoeuvring, he called for parliament to sit “as soon as possible”, repeating the call two weeks later.
Foreign AffairsSee Taliban’s Key Leaders In Afghanistan by Akell(op): 6:16am On Aug 16, 2021
Six important figures lead the Taliban movement that has been fighting the Western-backed government since 2001.

The Taliban has been fighting the Western-backed Afghan government in Kabul since it was removed from power in 2001.

It originally drew members from so-called “mujahideen” fighters who, with support from the United States, repelled Soviet forces in the 1980s.

The group emerged in 1994 as one of the factions fighting a civil war and went on to control most of the country by 1996, when it imposed its interpretation of Islamic law.

Opponents and Western countries accused it of brutally enforcing its version of Islamic law and suppressing religious minorities.

The Taliban is once again ascending militarily in Afghanistan since foreign troops began to withdraw, seizing most of the country’s territory to control the capitals of 10 of 34 provinces.

Its founder and original leader was Mullah Mohammad Omar, who went into hiding after the Taliban was toppled by US-backed local forces following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US.

So secretive were Omar’s whereabouts that his death, in 2013, was only confirmed two years later by his son.

These are some of the key figures in the movement:

Haibatullah Akhunzada
Known as the “Leader of the Faithful”, the Islamic legal scholar is the Taliban’s supreme leader who holds final authority over the group’s political, religious and military affairs.

Akhunzada took over when his predecessor, Akhtar Mansour, was killed in a US drone attack near the Afghan-Pakistan border in 2016.

For 15 years, until his sudden disappearance in May 2016, Akhunzada taught and preached at a mosque in Kuchlak, a town in southwestern Pakistan, associates and students have told Reuters news agency.

He is believed to be aged about 60 and his whereabouts are unknown.

Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob
The son of Taliban founder Mullah Omar, Yaqoob oversees the group’s military operations and local media reports have said he is inside Afghanistan.

He was proposed as the overall leader of the movement during various succession tussles.

But he put forward Akhunzada in 2016 because he felt he lacked battlefield experience and was too young, according to a Taliban commander at the meeting where Mansour’s successor was chosen.

Yaqoob is believed to be in his early 30s.

Sirajuddin Haqqani
The son of prominent mujahideen commander Jalaluddin Haqqani, Sirajuddin leads the Haqqani Network, a loosely organised group that oversees the Taliban’s financial and military assets across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The Haqqanis are believed by some experts to have introduced suicide bombing to Afghanistan and have been blamed for several high-profile attacks in Afghanistan, including a raid on Kabul’s top hotel, an assassination attempt on then-President Hamid Karzai and a suicide attack on the Indian embassy.

Haqqani is believed to be in his late 40s or early 50s. His whereabouts are unknown.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar
One of the co-founders of the Taliban, Baradar now heads the political office of the Taliban and is part of the group’s negotiating team in Doha to try and thrash out a political deal that could pave the way for a ceasefire and more lasting peace in Afghanistan.

The process has failed to make significant headway in recent months.

Baradar, reported to have been one of Mullah Omar’s most trusted commanders, was captured in 2010 by security forces in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi and released in 2018.

Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai
A former deputy minister in the Taliban’s government before its removal, Stanikzai has lived in Doha for nearly a decade and became the head of the group’s political office there in 2015.

Or could he have changed his name because he believes Pantami is associated with terrorism while Ibrahim is the new man?
