President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said he is struggling to build his house in his Otuoke village, Bayelsa State. He said he might give out the house before he dies if he found out that his children are not ready to live in the village. Jonathan spoke in Lagos at a fund-raiser for St. Stephens Anglican Deanery and Youth Development Centre, Otuoke. He said, "We are all mortal beings, we are all biological specimen so we will all die but when we die, what will we be remembered for, what will we leave behind? "I use to tell people that even the house I am struggling to build in the village, these days in this global age, how am I sure that my children will even stay in my root. They want to go to West Indies, they want to go to Latin America. "So, I was even joking with people that if I look at the behaviour of my children and if I don't see any of them that will patronise the village, I will donate my house before I die." The President urged wealthy Nigerians to make meaningful contributions to the development of poor communities in the country in order to better the lives of the youth and empower them to make useful contributions towards national development. He said the project for the St. Stephens Anglican Deanery and Youth Development Centre was dear to him because he wanted to make sure that the younger generation passed through a better system of education different from the one he experienced while growing up. "I feel the only thing I can do is to make sure that from nursery school to primary and secondary school, there should be a standard educational facility and youth programme, so that it gives opportunity for the younger ones to grow. Even if we die in the next 100 years, people will remember that those before them have something for them," he said. Present at the occasion were Chairman of Visafone, Jim Ovia; Chairman Capital oil, Chief Ifeanyi Uba; Chairman of A-Z Oil, Chika Okafor, Chairman Arik Air, Joseph Arumemi- Ikhide, Oba Otudeko and Tony Elumelu. Also present were Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, ministers, senators, members of the House of Representatives and prominent indigenes of Otuoke. NL, is this a. new trick to make us believe he now has a shoe and its only house that is left |

A young mother, Adeola Joseph, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour by a Magistrates Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state for burying her only child alive in her residence for two days in 2012.The trial chief magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, while delivering judgement said the accused did not look remorseful and so not fit to live among humans.“The convict is callous and may not change from her devilish act as she did not show any remorse” he said. “She may do worse if given the opportunity to continue to live amongst human beings. She needs to learn how to live among human beings and not animals.”Before her arrest at Ijetu area of the state capital and consequent conviction, she was said to have made several failed attempts in the past to eliminate the two-year-old baby,Fatia Nafiu, who she saw as an impediment to her success in life. The 18-year-old Adeola, who was confirmed to be mentally fit by medical doctors during her trial, maintained that she had no regrets about her action. Her first attempt to get rid of Fatia – who may be called a miracle child – whom she had lived together with for two years, was in November, last year, when she allegedly poisoned her food. It was gathered that the second attempt was a month after the first failed attempt, when the young mother dumped the baby by the bank of River Osun but some passersby rescued the baby and took her to a motherless babies home from where she was later returned to her mother. The mother and child lived together until Adeola made another attempt on lived together until Adeola made another attempt on the baby’s life; but by sheer providence, the child escaped death once again. Adeola’s house became a Mecca of sorts as people rushed to the scene of the incident to catch a glimpse of the child who was rescued by good Samaritans led by Prophetess Tunrayo Akinwande. Fatia was buried alive in the early hours of Monday, February18, 2012 and was only exhumed alive, miraculuously two days after by the Prophetess who lived close to where she was buried. It was gathered that upon her exhumation, Fatia fainted and was rushed to the State Hospital, Asubiaro in Osogbo where she was admitted for three days before she was discharged. |

GET A GOOD PENALTY TAKERThe assignment of playing penalties should be taken off Mikel Obi – it is an added pressure to a player who is trying to win back the fans into his corner and the angst of missing spot kicks should not become another albatross across his neck. Imagine that he missed that kick against Ethiopia in the 87th minute and Nigeria was sent packing from the Nations Cup, the Nigerian football fans may never forgive and forget. So there is Vincent Enyeama, who takes these kicks for his clubs wherever he has found himself – from Enyimba to Hapoel Tel Aviv, he has been the consummate penalty taker. Also Obi should be taken off every set piece duty. His corner kicks and free kicks have posed no threat in this tournament. Floated high like volleyball about to be spiked, it makes good catching practise for the opposing goalkeepers. Victor Moses, if he plays will do a better job. TRY OUT ANOTHER MIDFIELD COMBINATIONThe combination of Fegor Ogude, Mikel Obi and Nosa Igiebor has not wrought the desired forward play that will transit into goals so Coach Keshi needs to do a little tweaking in this department. In the first two matches, Igiebor has been out of position because Obi has decided to push forward more exposing Ogude to the two beat one situation and Igiebor caught in between the lines. If the coach wants to line up Mikel as the offensive conduit then he should bring in another player who will help Ogude in his defensive duties and also have the propensity to carry the ball into attacking areas.Ogenyi Onazi would have been the preferred choice as he has the energy and as he showed against Catalonia, he also possesses that burst of pace that can take him beyond defenders in the push into the third segment of the pitch. He has also showed that he can score with two goals in his five appearances for the Super Eagles. PLEASE DO NOT RESTORE AMBROSE TO RIGHT BACKIf Keshi does not trust Kenneth Omeruo to do the job at right back, please let Ogenyi Onazi continue in that position as his energy and ability to go forward will be needed against Ethiopia not a perpetually marooned Efe Ambrose, who has shown that he cannot be trusted going forward or defending.Omeruo and Onazi have shown that they bring more quality to the right back than the Celtic central defender does. So in Nigeria’s search for a win – and this is not writing off Ethiopia’s chances, the Eagles full backs must be able to join the attack and provide good crosses or even get into scoring positions – these qualities Ambrose has not shown in his various stints at right back. BRING IN OSHANIWA FOR ECHIEJILEThe Eagles will not get any worse if Juwon Oshaniwa comes in to replace Elderson Echiejile at left back. The Portugal-based defender has been the most nervous defender for the Eagles and has not joined the attack as frequently as expected.Anytime the opponents attack down Nigeria’s left side, fans have their hearts in their mouths not knowing what calamity would befall the team on account of Echiejile’s apparent nervousness. This is not saying that the SC Braga man is not a good player but that he has not shown enough confidence to continue to command the left-back position. Let Keshi try the option that he has. DO FOR A DOUBLE-PRONGED ATTACKNow the Ethiopians will be preparing on how to shackle Emmanuel Emenike, but that plan can be thrown askew if Emenike is paired with either Brown Ideye or Ikechukwu Uche.Emenike has shown that he can score goals and we have also seen the way he has been man-handled in the last two matches so the coach should help him out by giving him a partner and playing two orthodox wingers in Ejike Uzoenyi from the left and Victor Moses or Ahmed Musa from the right. This will give more potency to the team in the last attacking third of the pitch and will also stabilise the midfield. The most important thing is that it will have the Ethiopians thinking again about their game plan and before they settle, the Super Eagles might already have notched up the goals that will take them into the quarter finals. |

Two soldiers deployed to participate in the West African Force in Mali were on Saturday killed in an ambush by terrorists at Itakpe Junction, along the Okenne- Lokoja Road. Four others were said to have received injuries from bomb explosions and gun attacks from the assailants. The bodies of the late soldiers were deposited at the mortuary in Lokoja while the injured soldiers are receiving treatment under heavy security at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. It was learnt that about 150 soldiers were travelling in a convoy from Ibadan, Oyo State when they came under the attack in Kogi. Motorists were held up along the Okenne-Lokoja Road for over one hour as the road was blocked by men of the Joint Task Force. The Army Director of Information, Maj. Gen Bola Koleosho, who confirmed the attack, said those who killed the soldiers were members of a terrorist organisation. Koleosho said the terrorists laid an ambush for them and threw Improved Explosive Devices on the convoy while firing at them simultaneously from the bush. He said the soldiers left Ibadan for the North on their way to Mali and stopped over in Okenne to pass the night. He dismissed insider’s collaboration on the ground that it could not be substantiated. He said, “The troops were coming from Ibadan, I think it took them some time to leave and when they got to Okene, they stopped over to pass the night. “They were leaving in the morning around when the attackers who were not robbers, because thieves don’t use IEDs, waited for them. After they allowed the first escort vehicle to pass, they threw bombs at them while opening fire from the bush. “Our soldiers at the back returned the fire. If not, the casualty figure would have been higher. One person died instantly and the other died on the way to the hospital. The other four are responding to treatment.” Koleosho said the soldiers decided to block the road to ensure that innocent Nigerians were not attacked by the terrorists. He also said it was to pave way for the soldiers to defuse unexploded IEDs which might have been left behind by the terrorists. http://www.punchng.com/news/terrorists-ambush-mali-bound-soldiers-kill-two/ |
