I have nothing to gain by sharing my experience other than giving back to a forum I learnt quite a lot from the experience of others. And sincerely, this is not the right place to troll. Boss.. Congrats but u actually made my day.I laughed and started rolling on the floor.Gbam..wat a word. holakunle: Preamble
My application was denied on April, 2015. Nervousness, inadequate preparation and an apparent error on the I-20 contributed to the refusal. I stammered from the first question to the last. The denial was a funny story because I have a valid B1/B2 visa (in fact I just returned from a vacation in the US) with previous visits to France, Germany, Netherlands and South Africa.
Fast forward to yesterday. I knew only God can give me a stress/anxiety free interview. So I fasted with prayer point on Divine Favour. I ended the fast at 3 when body no fit continue. lol.
Today
Got to the venue late this morning, the official at the confirmation table threatened to send me back for because I cited traffic as excuse for coming late. I just they look the guy.
I entered eventually around 9am. Joined the queue and started my prayer point declaration.
I got to the VO, he told me to hold on. Another guy, probably a new VO, came behind him and they discussed for about a minute.
VO: Please put your right fingers on the scanner….bla bla bla
Me: I complied
VO: Where have you traveled to?
Me: France, Germany, Netherlands, South Africa and the US
VO: Cuts in! So you have been to the US several times
Me: No. Just Once. This April
VO: What did you go for?
Me: Vacation.
VO: What do you do for work?
Me: I am a Bleep in an Bleep firm in Nigeria
VO: So why do you want to go to the US
Me: Going for graduate studies in Engineering
VO: Cuts in. Oh so you are going for school. I missed that. I didn’t check your documents well.
VO: How did you get the school and why Montana State
Me: I made research through usnews.com, gradstudy and google. I picked the school because it has a strong reputation in engineering and the courses in the department are structured with research demands in the the mineral industry.
VO: ok. How much do you earn?
Me: Whispered XXYYZZ
VO: How do you plan to fund your studies?
Me: I have some money saved up
VO: Looking concerned. Montana is a remote state in the US. Why did you pick a school in the state?
Me: I used some criteria during my search. School Reputation and Quality of the education and gbam, Montana came up. I actually said Gbam...lol
VO: Are you married
Me: No. Single
VO: Folded my passport and tossed me the I-20. Then said thanks for coming. You can pick up blab la bla
Me: Thank you Sir
Glory be to God in the highest for the wonderful thing He has done. |

I will advice you read your assistantantship letter well for rules guiding deferment.in my own case, it is written that the offer will be given to another student incase you deem fit to defer to another semester. wiseman2392: These gurus in the house! Aha! You people are bless and rich. U are bless and rich in the sense that u can share part of what u have with people and still have more. Why are u doing this I asked mysef ? You are doing this only to help people both rich and poor to achieve their dreams. Many are happy reading these threads especially mysef. I keep wondering about what brought this forum, I highly salute u people, I give my respect. I started following nairaland like eight months ago and the advise giving here is priceless. Thanks to this forum, here comes my fear; I was given admission(fall 2015) for Chemistry(MSc) with 50% scholarship in one school in US. But I have to defer d admission(Spring 2016) due to the fact that my financial document wud not be ready on time. I deferred, a form was sent and I filled the form and mailed back to them. My fear is I have not heard from the school and I don't want the scholarship to be forfeited. I have mailed the school twice but no response. A friend told me I shouldn't bother that once it has been deferred, the scholarship award is intact. My question is many of u wud have passed thru these processes and I believe u cud help, kindly help me out to relief me of fear. Thanks, am really expecting your reply. |

Oga Deetus, please finish this story, did he get the Visa? This story is interesting..Hope isn't a season film.. DeeTus: Hahahaha. Why Jesus? Don't you know that Nigerians are so desperate for visa?
I could remember when I went to one of the embassies with my little cousin. Met a man who could hardly fill a form given to him probably due to time and anxiety.
While some agents were telling him 10k, others were saying 12k, 15k and so on.
The man said something in one of the local languages, meaning things have fallen apart, then i started laughing.
Then he looked at me and said oga, please can you help me? I only have 3k with me now. I said Sir, don't worry, it's absolutely free.
He then looked at me constantly for like 1 minute. Was so surprised. I said bring the form. He gave it to me. I said while I fill the form, just be saying, I'll get my visa in Jesus name till i finish filling this form.
So immediately i finished filling the form, he gave me his bag and wallet and asked me to hold them and went inside, i said Lord, pls let this man and my cousin be successful. I am not perfect but i've tried my best in a difficult time. |

Big Francis killed it..See my life I just go dey beg for fund..maybe na why my advisor no reply my mail..I will see him when I get US..chai bigfrancis21: Funding can be quite competitive and it is not something to be passive about. Don't sit back and wait. Locate one or 2 professors in the department with research fields in line with what you want to do and contact them. Don't be too direct about wanting funding in your first email to them. First impression matters a lot. Rather in your email, suggest ways you can help them improve on their research works, current or past. Before you email them be sure to access and download one or two copies of their research work, thoroughly go through them and come up with ways you think you can better the research. Never make the fact that you want funding for the sake of its money so apparent and clear. Rather, an intense interest in research should be your expression, your reason for wanting funding. Or else, the professors would think you are just going for the money and I can guarantee you a 100% that no professor would grant you funding knowing your motivation is just for the money and not for the research itself.
And don't defer your admission yet. Slug it out first with your professors to see if you could get funding for next semester. PhD candidates are often given funding at the same time with admission. You should get one. |

So na u dey handle self study..Thanks Man..people are not getting response again oh..a Frd told me..I downloaded the stuff and I sent to like 10 frds..kudos.. DanjaNinja: Please lets be objective here and cut @bbdd some slack. He has some valid point that we all need to consider. While his response was a bit strongly worded, it is what it is - The truth. I know we all started somewhere and no one knows it all and no one ever will. Even the professionals on this thread were once complete novices who knew nothing. However the idea is that you need to at least make some effort to try figure out the basics on your own before asking questions. I fully acknowledge that in the process of learning, that no question is silly but there's a subtle difference - some questions show initiative and a strong desire to learn while others seemingly valid and logical, show complete lack of initiative and complete laziness on the part of the poster. For example the question "GRE and TOEFL, are they the same?" while seemingly valid, it also subtly shows that poster has made no single attempt on his/her own to try to understand the basics. We might argue that the poster is a complete novice and should not be scolded but common!!! lets be realistic here, while such questions are permissible they should not be acceptable. If you cannot at least google it up, how do you even pass the exam?. I mean, have you seen the verbal section of the GRE ? Does it look friendly? Who would bail you out?
A better alternative would involve at least making an attempt by using google. Then if you still don't understand after using google, you are completely free to come on here and ask for clarification with emphasis stating that "although i checked the website, i still don't understand". That my friends shows that you have at least made an attempt and that makes all the difference.
I run a thread on nairaland titled "How to achieve high scores on the GRE". In that thread, i shared my GRE experience and tips on what i feel could help anyone achieve high scores. As part of the post, i included detailed explanations of how one could obtain GRE and TOEFL ebooks by sending blank mails to selfstudy360@gmail.com and selfstudy.version2@gmail.com. Yet, would you believe that i receive countless mails from those who claim to have visited the thread asking me for instructions on how to get the GRE ebooks? I even got a mail from someone asking me "how to achieve high scores"!!!!!!!! Like wtf? Kill me already!!!! After my detailed and extensive post, you ask this? It begs the question, did you even read my post? If you did, why ask rhetorical questions?
You think @bbdd is aggressive? Trust me, in life you will encounter situations where either you will not find anyone willing to help you or you will not find anyone with comparable expertise in solving your problem. In such situations, What do you do? Give up and cry or Roll up your sleeves and take the bull by the horn by using your initiative.
TLDR (too long, didn't read): I agree with bbdd. Please before asking questions, do some basic research. You will get more positive responses to your inquiry if you at least show that you have made an attempt but still cannot make progress cos most times, while your questions may seem utterly impossible, the answers are just one click away. |
