Nigeria's anti-graft agency, EFCC, have said it has arrested a Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps, one Ambrose Enoch, over alleged employment scam and extortion. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC Gombe Zone has arrested one Mr. Ambore Enoch, Commandant, Nigerian Peace Corps, Gombe State Command for financial impropriety bordering on employment scam and extortion of money from the general public under the pretext of offering them appointment into the Corps. The arrest followed a petition by some aggrieved members of the Corps of Gombe State Command. Following investigation, it was discovered that the victims (mostly youth of Gombe State) were deceived to pay various sum of money ranging from Three Thousand Naira (N3,000) to Sixty Thousand Naira (N60,000) into the Corps account domiciled in one of the new generation banks amounting to the tune of N54 Million (Fifty Four Million Naira) only. This was between December 2016 to March 2017. In the mean time, it was discovered that out of the money realised from the corps account, the Commandant withdrew the sum of N3.5Million (Three Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) only for personal use, he also transfered the sum of N20 Million (Twenty Million Naira) only into his personal account and remitted the sum of N18.7 Million (Eighteen Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira) only into the Corps account at the Headquarters, Abuja. Other withdrawal were done by individuals under the instruction of the Commandant which appears suspicious. Investigation into the matter is still ongoing and suspect will be charge to court as soon as the investigation is concluded. ABUJA – HUMAN Rights activist and legal luminary, Femi Falana, SAN, has urged Nigerian labour unions to cease the fight against corruption from the government, alleging that the most corrupt people are found in government. He has also called for a full probe of the alleged $500 million bribe involving a serving governor from the North, saying that the matter must not swept under the carpet. Falana who stated this in his lecture at the 40th anniversary of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, in Abuja, with the theme “Dynamic Labour Leadership: Filling in the Economy”, stated that the Federal Government has no business to be borrowing money. He said that Nigeria has become a joking stock in the international community borrowing money from countries when it could make 100 billion dollars if it could check Britain and the United States where the nation’s oil was discharged. According to him,”We must go to the root of criminality on International level to recover our money. PENGASSAN should not leave the fight against corruption to government. No government in the world fight corruption genuinely. The most corrupt people are found in the government. “We can cease the initiative of the fight against corruption,” he stated, adding that the fight against corruption should not be selective and restricted to a particular party. He said, “It is important for the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, NUPENG and PENGASSAN to lead other Nigerians to ensure that we wage war against corruption that is impartial, fair and just.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/10/most-corrupt-people-re-found-in-govt-falana/amp/ |
The Federal Executive Council has approved the implementation of the no work, no pay principle when workers go on strike in the federal public service. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, disclosed this on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while briefing State House Correspondents after FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. He said the approval was sequel to the adoption of the Draft White Paper on the Report of the Technical Committee on Industrial Relations Matters in the Federal Public Service. Ngige said that the public service in Nigeria was bedeviled by problems and conflict areas; hence governments, over time, set up various committees and brought out circulars in a bid to stem industrial disputes. The minister said that the technical committee, which was inaugurated on April 27, 2016, did their work and submitted it to the FEC in October 2017. “FEC in turn impaneled a committee of 10, which I chaired to do a government Draft White Paper on those contentious areas that the technical committee had looked at. “These contentious areas are enforcement of section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act Law of the Federation 2004; this is the section that deals with lockout of workers by their employers without declaring redundancy appropriately. “Because in some establishments, especially in the private sector, workers are locked out by their employers; so the law there says that if you lock your workers without passing through the normal channel-due process. “For the period of the lock out, the worker is assumed to be at work and will receive all the remunerations and allowances, benefits accruing to him for the period and that period will also be counted for him as a pensionable period in the computation of his pension. “But when workers go on strike, the principle of no-work-no-pay will also apply because that principle is enshrined in the same section 43 of the Labour Act.’’ According to Ngige, the section says that for the period a worker withdraws his services, government or his employers are not entitled to pay. The minister said that under the section, the period for which the worker was absent would not count as part of his pensionable period in the public service. He said that FEC accepted it as a white paper recommendation that should be gazetted because even the National Industrial Court had made pronouncement on that law and said that it was clear. Ngige said that another area was the issue of public servants remaining permanently in the executive bodies on trade unions. “Government realises that some persons in the public service go into trade union executive positions; hold offices; and they do that for life; for as long as they are in the service. “In doing so, they will refuse postings and deployments under the guise that are doing trade union activities; government says no. “You have to be a public servant first before you become a trade unionist; therefore, if you are there; the public service rules will also apply to you. “And in doing so, government says establishments will look at the issues and give it a human face in order not to disrupt trade unionism. “And in furtherance to this, government has also said that there must tenure stipulations because people stay there without tenure; many organisations give people union positions without tenure; government says there is no office that does not have tenure.’’ Ngige said that trade unions, henceforth, should present constitutions that must have tenures; at least, maximum of two tenures for any elective position. He said that another aspect of the report discussed by the council was the issue of residence training for medical doctors. According to him, the residence training for medical doctors has been contentious one as some medical doctors come into this training and become professional unionists and stay there as permanent job. He said that the Federal Government had fixed tenure for residence training of medical doctors, which was seven years within the trainee was to pass all his exams or quit. Ngige said that FEC also looked at the Ayere report on inter-professional rivalry in the health sector and directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to present it FEC for deliberation. On the minimum wage, the minister restated that the Federal Government’s stance was N24,000 per month. He said that once minimum wage was fixed, any organisation or state that had the capacity to pay more could do that. Ngige cited that Edo, Delta and Lagos states paid their workers more than the current N18,000 national minimum wage. ERSTWHILE All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia has admonished the ruling party to relieve its incumbent national chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of his job, if it wants to win the 2019 presidential election. In a statement, Ogbonnia said: “ The calls for the removal of the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, are widening like wild fire. That is not surprising. Unless the APC wants to risk a crushing defeat in 2019, the party has nowhere to go but to let Mr. Oshiomhole go now. “The APC has found itself in a situation where a crown was mistakenly placed on a clown, and the natives were expecting him to perform like a king.” The presidential aspirant enumerated Oshiomhole’s many sins to include: his inability to articulate a clear manifesto for the upcoming elections. He said that rather than face the election, Oshiomhole has engaged in exclusive politics that has seen the rise of autocracy, imposition of exorbitant nomination fees, leading to the ruin of internal party democracy within the party. Ogbonnia reiterated that Oshiomhole has outlived his usefulness within the party and should resign. “ It is time this crisis ends. A growing multitude of party faithful is aggrieved. The party, as a matter of urgency, needs a visionary and result-oriented chairman, from any zone, who has the personality to assuage hurt feelings and the capacity to unite the party in time for the 2019 elections.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/10/for-apc-to-win-oshiomhole-must-go-ogbonnia/amp/ |
According to a report by Premium Times, the students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) have shut down the institution’s main campus in Ogbomoso and also its medical school in Osogbo over an increment in their tuition fees. It had been earlier reported how the institution at its 133rd governing council meeting which held on Thursday, July 5 decided that the hike will take effect from the 2018 / 2019 academic session. The present 100 level students paid N120,000 for indigenes of Oyo and Ogun states and N150,000 for non-indigenes as part of the resolution of the institution after the university strike that lasted for months. However, on Monday, the institution implemented its decision in a mail sent to all students. It said indigenes are now to pay N200,000 while non-indigenes are to pay N250,000 for the new session which will commence on October 29. The new fees are against the initial N63,500 for indigenes and N72,500 for non-indigenes who are returning students. The spokesman of the university, Lekan Fadeyi, has since then refused to answer calls and text messages sent to his line on this development. However, as early as 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Premium Times gathered that the students locked the institution’s campus gates in Osogbo and Ogbomoso and are now protesting with the hashtag, #OccupyLautech. The closure has disrupted the flow of vehicles and also grounded day to day activities in the school. The Students’ Union President, Abiodun Oluwaseun, who spoke with Premium Times in a telephone interview threatened that they will not vacate the gate unless the school reverses its decision. “We have shut down main road in front of college of health sciences and also the school main gate. No retreat, no surrender. We have to fight this and make sure that irregularities does not reign,” he said. Another student leader, Fawole Isreal, who is coordinating the protest in Osogbo told our correspondent that the authorities have erred by increasing the fees. “During the preparation for Osun State election, the Chancellor of the varsity, Tinubu was boasting how only him is richer than Osun State. The same Tinubu has left LAUTECH to ruins by keeping mum and not showing remorse as a father on the situation of things. That is being irresponsible.” Other students who reacted to the development also tagged the implementation of the decision by the university management as irresponsible. “We can’t afford the money (fees). When workers are still fighting for minimum wage, the institution came up with hike,” a student, Aarinola Adegbite, said. Another student, Kazeem Alli, told Premium Times that the university “is calling for another strike” by the increase.

Mr Wike, who acknowledged supporting the Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, during the just concluded PDP presidential primary in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said he has no regret supporting Mr Tambuwal. “I supported the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal fully. I have no regrets for my support for Tambuwal. “But the party has made a choice and as a loyal party man, I stand by the choice of the party. I will support His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar to victory in 2019,” a statement from the Government House, Port Harcourt, quoted Mr Wike as saying on Sunday in Port Harcourt during a thanksgiving service for the successful hosting of the PDP national convention in the city. The statement was issued by the governor’s media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu. “That is what is called party loyalty,” Mr Wike added. The governor made a case for all the party leaders, members, and supporters to come together and work for the victory of the party’s candidate, Mr Abubakar, in the 2019 election. “We must put our heads together to ensure that this bad government is sacked. We must ensure that this bad government goes in 2019. “If this same government returns in 2019, then Nigerians are digging their graves. The suffering now will be a child’s play. That is why we must work for the good of our people,” he said. The PDP, he said, would surely win in Rivers in 2019. Mr Wike said he insisted that the convention be held in Port Harcourt because of the benefits it was going to bring to the local economy and the fact that “Rivers has been the home of PDP since 1999.” “Rivers State has made PDP proud and we shall continue to make PDP proud. God lives in Rivers State,” he said. The PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, called on Nigerians to support the PDP. “Let us take back our country from destruction,” Mr Secondus said. “Everything about this country has collapsed.” He said Mr Abubakar is the best candidate to drive the country to growth and prosperity. I don’t force myself on people because I am too busy.” He, however, lamented the rising rate of killings in some parts of the country especially in Plateau State. His words: “The recent killings in Plateau State is a moral assault on our nation. Nobody is qualified to be morally right, if he does not have feelings for loss of lives. I know how many times I cried over the killings in Nigeria. Some people claimed responsibility and nothing happened to them. “The effect of the 30 months civil war is still with us. Nigerian-Ghanaian singer Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade better known by his stage name of Mr. Eazi has never hidden his love for billionaire Femi Otedola’s daughter, Temi. In a new chat with Sunday Scoop, Mr. Eazi wasn’t ashamed to declare his love publicly for his lover. Reacting to a question on the true status of his relationship with Temi, he stated: “I don’t think there is anything hidden about it. Temi is my one and only girlfriend.”Share Given a chance to choose, he said he would love to spend more time in Nigeria with his family and loved ones. But, according to him, it is impossible, as he has fans all around the world. Mr. Eazi said: “I am faced with a blessing and curse. The fact that I make music that people all over the world listen to is a blessing. But the implication is that once people around the world listen to your music, it means you don’t have one constituency any longer. At present, I try to relate to my Nigerian, African and Diaspora fans and then to my new fans that are non-Africans. Also, people shouldn’t forget that I am just one man; so, I cannot be in many places at the same time. But I make sure that once I have an opportunity, I come to Nigeria to do one thing or the other. Trust me, it is not my joy that I cannot be in Nigeria where my family lives.” |

The APC appoints new spokesperson All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Lanre Issa-Onilu as its new national spokesperson. The appointment was made Friday evening by the National Working Committee of the APC in Abuja. Although a formal announcement is yet to be made, Mr Issa-Onilu confirmed his appointment. An aide to party chairman Adams Oshiomhole, Simon Ebegbulem, also confirmed the appointment but said Mr Issa-Onilu would have to be inaugurated before he can assume duties. Mr Issa-Onilu takes over from the acting spokesperson, Yekeen Nabena, who has now reverted to his position as deputy national publicity secretary of the party. Mr Nabena took the spokesperson’s position in interim capacity following the resignation of Bolaji Abdullahi who defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. When contacted for details of the new appointment on Friday, Mr Nabena said he was in Lagos and was not at the NWC meeting. He said he was yet to be briefed on the outcome but would release an official statement as soon as he is briefed. The new publicity secretary, Mr Issa-Onilu, is a specialist in strategic public communications planning, with vast experience in corporate and political communications, crisis communication, policy analysis and development issues. A graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Lagos, he holds MS Certificate in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University, Virginia, U.S.A. He also did courses in Advanced Public Relations and Media Audience Research at the New York University, United States, and attended several seminars and conferences in the U.S. and UK, including at the prestigious World Advertising Research Council (WARC) in London, UK. An associate member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and member of the Public Relations Society of New York, Mr Issa-Onilu is also a Corporate Member of the International Communications Conference (ICC) at the Baruch College, State University of New York, U.S.A. He is also an associate member of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON). He worked variously as a media relations executive and journalist for 15 years and as a policy and development issues strategist, public perception analyst and communication planner in the last 13 years. Mr Issa-Onilu joined the defunct Comet Newspapers in Lagos as a News Editor and later moved to Thisday Newspapers as Assistant Editor, SundayThisday. He resigned as Group Politics Editor, Thisday Newspapers. He also worked for the World Investment News (Winne), France, for the production of a special report on Nigeria’s democratisation process, published in the June 1999 edition of FORBES International Business magazine. The new ruling party spokesperson has written many papers and delivered lectures on public communication, crisis communication and reputation management and Integrated Marketing Communications. He delivered a paper on ‘How to Prepare a Marketing Plan’ at a workshop for advertising and marketing chief executives and practitioners organised by the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) in Abuja in 2008 and in Kaduna in 2009. The Amaechi-led faction of the party responding through the publicity secretary, Mr. Chris Finebone said the judgment as given by the Rivers State court was well expected as it was allegedly a part of the script by Senator Abe working with Governor Nyesom Wike to destabilise the state chapter of the APC. “We state that today’s ruling did not come to us, as a party, by surprise. However, it brings to an end the collaboration between Senator Magnus Abe and Governor Nyesom Wike to destabilise the APC in Rivers State. “We recall the many overt and covert partnerships between Governor Wike and Senator Magnus Abe using the Rivers State Judiciary on this matter to scuttle the electoral fortunes of the APC in 2019. Today’s ruling is a culmination of such an evil collaboration. “We further note that the grand rally staged today by Senator Magnus Abe was carefully planned and scheduled by both the Senator and Governor Nyesom Wike to coincide with the Rivers State High Court judgement, details of which they were already privy to. It was therefore not surprising when Senator Abe gleefully announced the exact ruling of the court on the rally rostrum just about when the judge was still reading his judgement in court. “We wish to inform APC members and sympathisers of our great party in Rivers State and across Nigeria to remain calm as we are well prepared in anticipation of today’s ruling and have therefore done the needful. “Despite aspects of the matter which are already before the Court of Appeal and the Nigerian Supreme Court, the lower court went ahead to decide on a matter that is being challenged at higher courts of the land. Indeed, our legal team is already finalising the paperwork to file an appeal on today’s judgment and stay of execution. There is absolutely no cause for alarm.” He said that the Ojukaye-led State Executive Committee (EXCO) had been further protected against any action from above by the Perpetual Injunction granted by Abuja High Court 14 presided over by Hon. Justice A. O. Musa on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in which it granted an Order of Perpetual Injunction restraining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Chairman, His Excellency (Comrade) Adams Oshiomhole (1st and 2nd Defendants) from ‘tampering with the mandates of the elected Officials/Delegates elected at the 1st Defendant’s Ward, Local Government and State Congresses in Rivers State on May 19, 20 and 21, 2018 respectively, either by nullifying, removing or in any way refusing to give effect to the outcome of the said congresses or by purporting to conduct another congress in respect of Rivers State.” He further said that if the aim was to annul the emergence of candidates for the party for the General Election that it had failed since the primaries were conducted by the national leadership of the party. |

Brethren,There is an issue about tithe and tithing that everyone is discussing on facebook. I want you to know that this is not new at all. By experience, I have discovered that there is a particular doctrine of the Bible that people twist and hammer on as if that is the main thing about our faith. This is my take on it. 1. Run away from anything and anyone that pitches you against your brothers and sisters in the common faith. "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them." ( Romans 16 : 17 ) 2. Take your stand on your persuasion and conviction. Whether you pay tithe or not is between you and God. Don't let anyone confuse you and pls don't confuse yourself. "One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." ( Romans 14 : 5 ) 3. As much as possible, teach things that will unite the people of God, not divide us. Teach what edifies, builds; not the things that tear us apart. "Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another." ( Romans 14 : 19 ) 4. Don't join those who are carried about with every wind of doctrines. At a time, it was men and women who just returned from heaven or hell, who set aside biblical standards to give us extra biblical experiences. From there, the wind blew hyper grace doctrine on us. Now it's tithe. It will soon blow away and another will come. Beware! "That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" ( Ephesians 04 : 14 ) 5. Realise that most of these doctrines are strange. They are controversial. You don't need to be a controversial man of God. Those who are given to controversy lose their voice. They fizzle out before their emergence into limelight. Get yourself out of any strange doctrines. "Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein." ( Hebrews 13 : 9 ) 6. Those who spend time on strange doctrines waste time and resources. Life is too short to spend on frivolities. There is a lot we can do for God with your talent, time and treasure. You are a christian, not an arthenian! "For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)" ( Acts 17 : 21 ) 7. Be on the alert! When the devil wants to hit you hard, he first isolates you. He plants pride in you. He gives you a false impression that you are an authority, that you don't listen to anyone else. When you become an island, when you ignore fellowship with brethren; you set up yourself as a prey for the enemy. "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." ( Hebrews 10 : 25 ) |

The 69-year-old was relieved of his duties two days after his side shockingly failed to overcome Sweden in a two-leg qualifying play-off Gian Piero Ventura has been sacked as Italy manager after overseeing a catastrophic World Cup qualifying failure. For the first time since 1958 Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup, with a 0-0 draw against Sweden on Monday at San Siro clinching a 1-0 aggregate victory for the Swedes in their qualifying play-off. And the debacle has cost Ventura his job, as the FIGC confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday. "During a meeting called by FIGC president Carlo Tevecchio... the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia was discussed," the missive states. "As the first order of business Tevecchio revealed the release of the entire technical team and, from today onwards, Gian Piero Ventura is no longer coach of the national team." Ventura refused to hand in his resignation immediately following the Sweden match, saying he needed time to speak with the Italian federation president. “I didn’t resign because I haven't met [with the] Italian FA chairman yet. We’ll meet in the next days, we’ll discuss about it. There are many things to talk about," he said on Monday. "Until the play-off we were progressing as foreseen, then we’ve been unlucky not to score against them [Sweden]. I apologize to the Italians. Only for the result, not for the effort we put in every game.” But the decision has now been taken out of his hands, as he is forced out of the post after a year-and-a-half in charge. Ventura took over for Antonio Conte following Italy's successful Euro 2016 run, when they bowed out on penalties to Germany in the quarter-finals. Conte was considered to have overachieved with that Italy side, who were short on talent in comparison to Azzurri teams of the past. But Ventura failed to achieve what his predecessor had during his time at the helm, with Italy regressing in a World Cup qualifying campaign that counted a 1-1 home draw to Macedonia last month among its more disappointing results. Ventura could only lead Italy to a second-place finish in UEFA World Cup qualifying Group G, finishing five points behind group winners Spain and setting up a play-off with the Swedes to reach Russia. |
