The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday said Nigerians should learn from history of the country’s civil war rather than beat drums of a second civil war. Osinbajo, who is currently delivering a keynote address at an event organised to mark Biafra at 50, in Abuja said, “while the wise learn from history, experience remains the best teacher for a fool.” The Acting President said while it is kinder to learn from history, experience is a harsh teacher. Stressing that there was no harm in discussing the nation’s existence, Osinbajo called on Nigerians to use the country’s diversity to make her great, “instead of trying to flee into the lazy comfort of homogeneity.” http://uncova.com/biafra-at-50-osinbajo-says-only-fools-learn-from-experience

as it stands now Russia is number 1 in terms of electronic warfare... their jamming device is the best in the world. America may take over probably 10 years to this time or less. Russia invest heavily on defensive equipment while America invest on fighter jets and carriers which are obsolete in todays warfare. America is afraid to start a war with Russia, because Russia will outsmart them with out firing a single shot......... I'm not a pro Russia or anti America, I say this base on what I read and comments from American and Russian military generals. |

…Arrests 13 Suspected Kidnappers, Kills One …They Have Murdered Sleep, We Will Hunt Them Down- CP Assures Security operatives from the Lagos State Police Command deployed to the riverine area of the Ishawo Community in Ikorodu area of the State on Wednesday commenced total demolition of illegal waterfront shanties within the creeks where criminal elements hibernate to perpetrate their nefarious activities. The State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni who briefed journalists in Ishawo on the ongoing operations in the creeks by a combined team of the State Marine Police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), mobile policemen and the men from the anti-kidnapping squad in coordination with the local vigilante group, said 13 suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are currently aiding the team to track down the remaining suspects still on the run. It would be recalled that two weeks ago, four Police Officers and one Army Captain lost their lives after an ambush unleashed on them by suspected militants in Ishawo area. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, while condoling with the families and loved ones of the departed officers, had assured that every perpetrator directly or remotely linked to the dastardly act would be brought to justice in the shortest possible time. Owoseni said that the Governor immediately ordered a joint operation to hunt down the perpetrators, adding that the operation was yielding positive results. “So far so good following the attack that occurred at Ishawo where we lost four of our policemen and army captain, we have deployed operatives in the water. What you have seen now is for us to appraise what we have been doing for the past one week. So, quality arrests have been made and we are talking to them because the arrests that were made we believe that we get some evidential value from them, so they are talking to us, at least that makes us to know who we are looking for so that we won’t be just wild catching,” Owoseni said. The Commissioner of Police who was joined on the inspection of the joint operation to the den of the militants in Ishawo Creeks by the Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Mr. Tunji Disu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, security squad leaders and some journalists, said the visit was to appraise the work done so far and the next line of action. “Earlier this morning, they were able to get to the proper camps of these criminal elements where they saw some of them cooking food who fled immediately they saw the combined team. We just feel that we should take a decision to destroy the camps. The destruction of the camps are ongoing, that is why we are here and the officers that are handling the destruction of the camps, they are right inside the creeks now and at the end of the day, they would share the story as they finish that operations, but our movement here is just for you to see the terrain and see what the security operatives are facing with regards to policing this environment and that is why we are clamouring for the destruction of these shanties”, Owoseni said. Owoseni said that one of the suspected militants died during a fierce encounter with the Intelligence Response team of the Inspector General of Police, assuring residents in the area that they would go all out to ensure that they fish out all criminal elements in the State. “We still want to assure members of the public that these people have murdered sleep and they will not sleep, we will make sure that all of them are rooted out and that they face the full wrath of the law. “The 13 suspects we have, we are interrogating them and they are making useful statements for us and we are making progress and you can see that helicopter surveillance is also supporting all what we are doing but we want to assure members of the public around this axis that the government is ready, the security agents are ready to ensure that we put an end to the madness of these criminal elements,” the Commissioner of Police said. He said the Police have gathered necessary information on the perpetrators still on the run, assuring that one by one, they would be arrested and be made to face the full wrath of the law. He commended the synergy of the combined efforts of the security operatives, just as he added that the efforts of the local vigilante groups who are familiar with the terrain was critical to the operation especially in aiding to navigate the hideouts of the militants. “I want use this opportunity to thank the civilian men that have decided to join us and take us to navigate the water and also give us a lead to the centre of activities which is the creek where these criminal elements have been hibernating,” Owoseni said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/04/police-demolish-criminal-hideouts-ishawo-creeks/

Former Minister of Communications Major-General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd.) yesterday said the former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-General Ishaya Bamaiyi, misplaced facts in his book, “Vindication of a General”. Chiding the former Army chief for “peddling falsehood”, he said the book failed to give a proper account of the 1995 and 1997 attempted coups. Olanrewaju, who is also a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) the army’s 3 Division, Jos, said in a statement in Lagos that Bamaiyi’s book twisted the facts of history. The former Minister, who was tried and sentenced to death by the military tribunal for his alleged involvement in the coup, maintained that he was framed up. He said: “The point to note is that students of history must know what transpired in the 1995 and 1997 coup saga for posterity sake as against the misplacement of facts contained in the excerpts reported from the Bamaiyi’s new book. “Ironically, the new book can open the eyes of all Nigerians to see the footprint of an ambitious soldier that Bamaiyi epitomises as detailed in every account of the power play, which appears unfavourable to him, but favourable to both General Abdulsalami Abubakar as Abacha’s successor and General Olusegun Obasanjo as 1999 civilian president. He lost out in the power play.” Olanrewaju added: “There are two main issues I want to correct. The first was the arrest of Gwadabe. In his book, Bamaiyi stated that General Olanrewaju briefed the meeting called by the then Chief of Army Staff, General Alwali Kazir (retd.), which was factually incorrect. What is correct is that the only person who briefed the meeting was the DMI (Directorate of Military Intelligence), General Sarki Mukthar, whose duty it was to brief the meeting about security situation in the country. “Following this, I was instructed by the meeting to facilitate the arrest of Gwadabe, whose brigade in Yola was under my command, while other commanders were similarly instructed to effect the arrests of others under their own commands. The instruction to arrest Colonel Bello Fadile was also given in the meeting. Fortunately, General Kazir and General Mukthar are alive today to testify to the truth of this matter. “The second issue to be cleared is the 1997 Diya’s coup.” In his book, Bamaiyi claimed that “other meetings took place at a guest house with Gen. Diya, Gen. Olanrewaju, CO 7 Gds Bn, Gen. Diya’s security officer, Major Fadipe and me. Of course, General Abacha was always briefed after the meetings.” But, Olanrewaju denied any participation at the meeting, adding: “The said CO 7 Gds Bn and Major Fadipe, if called upon, will testify to the truth.I met Ishaya on two occasions; he met me in my house and I met him in his house, both times in Abuja. “For avoidance of doubt and for students of history, the first time I heard about the Diya’s coup was when Bamaiyi told me and Aziza confirmed it.This is how my name was dragged into the coup and it has affected my distinguished career in the Army.” http://thenationonlineng.net/olanrewaju-dismisses-bamaiyi-ambitious-soldier/

In its quest to eliminate fictitious address verification during the mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) procedure in banks and other financial institutions, DataPro, Nigeria’s leading compliance Solutions Company has introduced the capturing of the Global Positioning System (GPS) featuring the latitude and longitude of an address. Speaking to newsmen in Lagos recently, the Executive Director, Operations of the company, Mr. Oladele Adeoye explained that ‘’Since the company pioneered the outsourcing of address verification by banks in 2010, one major challenge has been how to have a fool-proof method of documenting the process.’’ In his words, ‘’with the recent introduction of our mobile application, the company is now able to completely eliminate fictitious address verification by capturing the GPS, photograph and all other physical characteristics of any address in Nigeria on-line and real time.’’ He further said: ‘’The mobile application would eliminate all paper work, guaranty proof-of-work and achieve robust turnaround time.” By virtue of Section 3 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act (MPLA) 2011 ( As Amended) all financial institutions are mandated to conduct the KYC procedure which involves the identification and verification of the customers demographics of name and address before establishing any business relationship with the customer. This is to ascertain that the customer is who he says he is, and also confirm if he is the Ultimate Beneficial Owner (UBO). However, according to Mr. Oladele, this process is fraught with a lot of bottle-necks in Nigeria because the country does not have a comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date database of names and addresses of all its citizens. DataPro with its presence in all the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory is reputed to be one of the biggest compliance solutions companies in the world. http://thenationonlineng.net/firm-unveils-apps-bvn/

By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor Abuja: The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, yesterday, took a look at the ongoing controversy between the Senate and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Colonel Hameed Alii, describing the development as mere distractions. Speaker House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara fielding questions from State House Correspondents after closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja Dogara, who fielded questions from senior journalists in Abuja, said the most important thing that should have been considered was whether the man had delivered on his mandate. Although he did not mention the upper legislative chamber in his briefing, Dogara said that it was also necessary to look at what the Nigerian laws say about wearing of uniforms by public officers and see whether any of the laws had been adhere to or breached by Ali. “So you have to look at all these issues before you come to a conclusion. As far as I am concerned these are mere distractions. They are not supposed to be; the main issue is delivery. What is it that we are delivering? That is it,” Dogara said. The Speaker said that although he could not say whether the House of Representatives would support the resolution passed by the Senate against Ali, he would only wait to see what happens when the discussion gets to the floor of the House for debate. He said, “But for a decision to be made in line with what the Senate proposed to the House, you can only wait till the matter comes before the House and that decision will be taken and Nigerians will know”. The Speaker, who also took at look at the performance of the federal government since coming to power in 2015, claimed that the administration could not be accused of disappointing Nigerians given where it was coming from and what it inherited from the previous administration. He said, “We have gone very far in trying to tackle this issue of insurgency and as a matter of fact all hostile spots have been liberated. This Government through various interventions has been able to ensure that the terrorists are not holding unto any swatch of land. “I believe this is one major thing that has given some hope to Nigerians, for the very first time that we are in a position to overcome this problem, and it is critical, even if it’s for nothing else that our citizens in the Northeast zone down to Abuja can move around more freely than before, that is something. “For me, I can say that a lot has been achieved even though unsung in most cases. In the context of our society, people want to see first-class roads, hospitals, they want to see the tangibles, but nobody places value on the intangibles. “For us who come from the Northeast, even some of us who live and work in Abuja, remember how dire this issue of terrorism was. We were all living on the throes of violence. The Police Headquarters here was bombed, U.N Mission here in Abuja was bombed, bombs exploded in Kaduna, Kano, Jos, in Nyanya as well and there was even threat of this mayhem being exported to the Southwest and other regions of this country. “If you look at it today, we have exited from that. The biggest problem of democracy is that with violence you cannot take the benefits of democracy. Democracy as we practice: Presidential democracy has three promises: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. The number one responsibility of Government is the security and welfare of the citizens. But the Speaker expressed disappointment with the treatment meted out to the Peace Corps of Nigeria even with the passage of the bill to make it a national security outfit in Nigeria by the National Assembly. Dogara made it clear that the National Assembly would muster the required majority in both chambers to veto the President on the matter if he withholds his assent to the National Peace Corps Bill already passed and transmitted to the Presidency. He maintained that there could be no limit to spend in securing the lives and property of Nigerians since the government exists to protect lives and property. He warmed, “So the Bill is still there before the President for his assent. If he doesn’t assent to it for whatever reason, we are at liberty to recall it back to parliament and muster the 2/3 in the House and Senate and pass in spite of Mr. President’s veto. But right now that is not the discussion. The Speaker also express dissatisfaction with the way the executive has been treating resolutions from the NASS with levity and hinted that a committee had been raised to compile resolutions passed but not complied with by the executive for necessary actions. Mr. Dogara promised to take steps to ensure the amendment of the Local Government Law in Nigeria to give autonomy to the 774 councils in the country and return the conduct of local elections to INEC to ensure credibility, fairness and competitiveness as opposed to the current hijack of the process by the respective states. He said the removal of autonomy from LGAs had created middlemen who deny the councils of the needed development. “The current system is not working, and it has become a system whereby some have constituted themselves into middle men along the lines; they grab the resources meant for the development at the grass root and appropriate it the way they deem fit. “And, there is a twin evil which is that of state independent electoral commissions that gives birth to a total mockery of democracy in the way the State Independent Electoral Commissions conduct elections that are usually won by just one party in power in the respective states. “I have never seen where democracy is mocked like in Nigerian local government elections. I don’t know how we can continue to mock ourselves that we are practising democracy at the third tier of government. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/never-seen-democracy-mocked-like-nigerian-dogara/

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday described the face-off between the Comptroller General of Customs, Hameed Ali, and the Senate as a “mere distraction.” Mr. Dogara, who stated this when he hosted newspaper editors in his office in Abuja, said the uniform is not supposed to be the main issue. “The main issue is delivery,” he said, suggesting that Mr. Ali’s performance in office should be the focus. The senate last week called for the resignation of Mr. Ali, saying he was2unfit to hold any public office. The senate’s decision followed Mr. Ali’s refusal to appear before the lawmakers in full customs uniform. A week before then, the lawmakers had turned Mr. Ali back after he appeared before them, but without the Customs uniform. Mr. Ali’s problem with the senate started with a controversial customs policy on retroactive payment of duties on imported cars. Following the senate’s condemnation of the policy, the customs reversed it. But the lawmakers insisted Mr. Ali, a retired army colonel, appear before them. The customs chief refused saying the matter was in court – filed by a private citizen – and there was a directive by the attorney general that both parties maintain the current status. In its resolution last week, the Senate said it would ask the House of Representatives to concur with its decision. On Tuesday, Mr. Dogara said the decision of the House of Representatives on the matter can only be decided at the plenary. “I can’t speak for the House; the House will have to speak for itself through a resolution of the House. “I cannot pre-judge what the outcome of the debate will be,” he said. Mr. Dogara, however, said the Senate and House work closely as is necessary in a bicameral legislature. He said Nigerians and the media should focus more on what the law states on the uniform controversy rather than on the stance of the Senate or Mr. Ali. http://saharareporters.com/2017/03/29/dogara-speaks-hameed-ali-senate-uniform-controversy
