PoliticsNigeria Lost 3000mw Of Electricity In The Last Six Months – Fashola by akinszz(op): 6:33am On Sep 27, 2016
THE Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has attributed a colossal loss of 3000 megawatts in the last six months (between April and September) to consistent vandalisation and sabotage of the country’s pipelines and assets. Fashola who gave this disclosure at the Wilson Centre, Washington DC, USA on the sidelines of the just concluded United Nation’s meeting, said, “over 3000 megawatt of power had been lost over the last six months due to consistent vandalism and sabotage of oil and gas pipelines and assets.”

He added that “the generating cap acity of the hydro plants was enhanced as their turbines, abandoned and not maintained for over three decades, received due attention pointing out that the increase in rainfall would not have meant much if the turbines were not repaired.” According to him, “In the last one year, we have done a lot of repairs and maintenance work so that every year, of course, there is increased circle of rainfall and water levels, but if you have three turbines and only one is working, you can only depend on one.

So where we had one working, we now have two, where we had two, we now have three. ”The hydros are giving us almost 400MW of power and that is a lot of power given our situation. And we have added about 1MW of Solar and there is more on the way.” The Minister had earlier promised that current boost in power would be further strengthened by various transmission projects currently being carried out in several axis of the nation’s six geo-political zones. TCN’s controversy On complaints attributing the transmission, TCN, as the weakest link in the power chain, Fashola, argued that progress was being made in the expansion of transmission, adding that it would be consistent with achieving incremental power within the value chain.

He stated that among areas listed to undergo such expansion projects include: “the Eastern Axis where the Ikot-Ekpene – Alaoji Transmission project takes off up to Enugu from where it would boost power all the way to Markurdi.” He also hinted that local issues that earlier hindered work, such as that of Itu and in Abia State had been resolved. He further added that some of the transmission projects had been completed, saying work was ongoing in the Kano-Kaduna Transmission Station, Lambe Transmission Station, Kumbotsu Transmission Station and the Alagbon Transmission Station in Lagos, among others. Continuing, he said, “We have finished the one in Okada in Edo State and there are more that have been awarded this year; the Gurara Transmission to take power from Gurara into Kaduna is nearing completion.

It is a site I have visited so work is going on”. However, Fashola, dispelled fears from some quarters that with Manitoba Hydro International out of the picture, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) would not be able to cope with the energy transmission capacity in the country assuring that the company was capable of carrying the capacity effectively. He said, “The transmission capacity of TCN is well over 5,000MW as we speak today. The capacity we have ever generated is 5,074MW.

So we can carry what we generate today. We are not vulnerable as not to transmit what we have”. Frowning at what he described as generalization in just describing the TCN as the weakest link in the electricity value chain, the Minister, who likened transmission to a transport system, noting that “building transmission station that would be beyond the capacity of the amount of power produced in the power chain would attract extra cost, Fashola, however, said government was planning for expansion of the Transmission segment of the sector because of idle power that is stranded as a result of lack of gas

PoliticsHow PDP ‘ll Battle Tomorrow by akinszz(op): 6:19am On Sep 27, 2016
Tomorrow’s election in Edo State is more than an election for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; it is a battle for political survival by the one time ruling party against the most resilient threat to it since it first berthed in the state in 1998. Not surprisingly, the party is deploying some of its most formidable captains in the battle to wrest the ship of state from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Ize-Iyamu-Campaign-1 EDO NORTH Although Governor Adams Oshiomhole hails from Edo North Senatorial zone, it is not going to be a clean sweep victory for the APC in the zone. In Etsako East local government area, the PDP will give a good fight as the party can boast of notable politicians such as High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Abu Dokpesi, High Chief Stanley Odidi, Jude Imagwe, Hon Godwin Eshieshi and many others. The coming of Hon. Abubakar Momoh, a former member of the House of Representatives and grassroots political mobilizer into Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s fold will further boost the chances of the party in the local government.

The showing of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) through its former senatorial candidate, Momoh in the 2015 election in Edo North notwithstanding, the final election results were clear indications that he is not a pushover in the area. The likes of Hon. Godwin Eshieshi, Joshua Ogene, and Hon. Abbas Jega and many other PDP stalwarts will take care of the Okpella axis of the local government to push for victory for the party. Aside, it is recalled that in the 2015 Presidential and National Assembly elections, the PDP won the local government. In Estako Central local government, former Chief of Staff to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, PDP State chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, Hon. Paschal Ugbome, Gen Alfred Ilogho (rtd), former Etsako Central local chairman, Emma Momoh and Alemhon Akhigbe and a former Commissioner for Lands and Survey in the Oshiomhole government, Osekhina Boi will work assiduously to ensure victory for the PDP in the election. PDP also won the local government in the 2015 Presidential and National Assembly election.

Estako West where the out-going governor hails from will be a tougher battle for the PDP. Both parties will slug it there. PDP will deploy Engr. Hussein Garba, Zakari Ayonote, Jarret Tenebe, Abu Nargata, Henry Duke Tenebe and Hon Sylvanus Eruaga, the PDP member representing Etsako West 11 in the House of Assembly. In the case of Owan West and Owan East local governments, the PDP soldiers would be hoping to ride on the protest in the two councils that they were bypassed in the selection of a running mate to the APC candidate.

Besides, the areas also cried of being marginalized by the Oshiomhole government. The PDP will be marshalling Senator Yisa Braimah, Alhaji Kashietu Ozeto, Barrister Ail Aji Muze, Major Oisamojie (rtd), Aimola, Ambrose Imode etc. In Akoko Edo where similar sentiments also prevail, political veterans like Dr. Tunde Lakoju, Col. Tunde Akogun, former Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, Mr. Bankole Balogun, Chief Johnson Emeasalu, Segun Saiki, Kayode Alabi, etc will be pushing the case for the PDP.

EDO CENTRAL Edo Central Senatorial zone, the home of the Esan people has been predominately PDP. The Esan people have been identifying with the PDP national leader, Chief Tony Anenih since 1999. The allegations that the senatorial district was marginalised by the Oshiomhole administration, the underfunding of the Ambrose Alli University will be the currency for the PDP chieftains marshalling the attack for the party. The PDP will be deploying Chief Tony Anenih, Senators Odion Ugbesia, Clifford Ordia, Chief Tom Ikimi, Prince Tony Omoaghe, Hon.Tony Aziegbemi, Hon Friday Itulah, Chief Mike Onolemenmen, and Hon. Joe Edionwele. Foremost candidates The party firepower will also be boosted by Mrs. Philomena Ihenyen, Mr. Richard Okosun. Elder Adekunle, Hon. Akhere Ugbesia, Hon. Festus Ebea, Felix Otubu, etc.

EDO SOUTH Edo South Senatorial zone is the beautiful bride that will decide the outcome of the election with the two foremost candidates from the zone. Besides, Edo South has 58 percent of the voting population who include the Bini, Esan, Afemai, Owan, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausas etc. It has three metropolitan local governments – Egor, Oredo and Ikpoba/Okha. In the 2015 Presidential and National Assembly elections, the PDP apart from wining the Senatorial seat also won three of the four House of Representatives seats in the senatorial district. Among the PDP strong men in the zone are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, Don Pedro Obaseki, a scion of the Obaseki family of Benin and a cousin of the APC candidate. The PDP also has Dr. Godwin Oni-Edigin, Mr. Clement Edo- Osagie, Bar. Nosa Adams, Larry Ogieva, Deacon Bayo Ogomon, Owele Dickson Imasogie, Deacon Mike Ehima, Bar. Chris Agbomwanegbe among others.

Science/TechnologyDevice To Speed Up Pupils’ Learning Ability Berths by akinszz(op): 6:18am On Sep 22, 2016
Imagine your child punching buttons on his digital device and interacting directly with a tutor as if it were a classroom setting; great isn’t it? That is what Video Tutorials is all about.

The Video Tutorials comprises audio visual files which contain lessons on various subjects. The files can be installed on android phones, tablets, and PCs without the rigour of internet connectivity.

Speaking on the sideline of a public lecture to celebrate Educational Advancement Centre’s (EAC) 10th anniversary held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos, last week, Bamgbose said regrettably, many students continued to fail WAEC and NECO despite that solutions to their challenges are a few steps away.

Once video tutorials are fully optimised, Bamgbose said learners would be enormously rich in knowledge of the respective subjects and would therefore be intellectually equipped enough to challenge their teachers on any knotty areas in class.

“Most Nigerian teachers (especially the graduates) are not necessarily lacking in knowledge; they are only poorly motivated. But when they know that the children will ask challenging questions in class, they will sit up because no teacher wants to look ignorant before his students.”

To make it affordable for all, Bamgbose, a cleric, revealed that the product has been priced as low as N15 naira per lesson.

“Schools can have all the lessons for all subjects installed on their systems for as low as N30000,”he added.

Bamgbose noted that finance has been a major challenge to marketing the product nationwide. Despite this, the product has continued to gain ground wherever they introduce it, Bamgbose added.

Bamgbose recalled that to further raise consciousness on the product, EAC team visited former Minister of Education Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who regretted that the device was brought to him at the climax of his tenure.

“He (Shekarau) kept shaking his head in regret during that visit! But of course the new minister of education will find records of that meeting. We believe government should be a continuum. You can’t say that you will not follow up on what Shekarau has done because he is no longer minister of education. The Ministry of Education cannot say they don’t know?”

He continued: “We were in Jalingo a few weeks ago, and for two days our staff were besieged at the hotel we lodged because of this product. But we can do so little because we are private, and our resources are limited. But we hope that speaking out at forums like this will make more people aware of the product,” he aded.

He appealed to Nigerian media to come to EAC’s aid by helping to create more awareness as a segment of their corporate social responsibility.

“This is for real, it’s not a gimmick, or copied from anywhere, neither are we using animations. These are real teachers teaching. We assign the students to automatic Whatsapp groups when they have questions, and allow the students to answer the questions themselves. The teacher only answers when they can’t. The Whatsapp groups are available for every subject. Kids are using these things (social media) for negative things; let’s encourage them to use them for positive things,” Bamgbose concluded.

Science/TechnologyRe: Python Swallows Two Goats In Lagos (Photos) by akinszz: 3:13pm On Sep 16, 2016
Mascotlawman:
This happened in my friend's street. I saw it with my eyes. A python came out from a canal near a woman's house and entered her goat house, swallowed one pregnant and one male goat. The woman came out in the morning to feed her goats, when she was about to enter the goat house she now saw a big python on the floor. The python could not move again. The woman ran with her both legs shouting. All the people in the neighborhood came out. This happened in Bucknor Okoye street in Jakande Lagos.
I pity those that always buy land in swampy areas, all in the name of answering a landlord or landlady. To tell u the truth, if those goat were to be little kids sleeping, the python would have swallowed them as well. Here are the pictures.
