Regina George goes in heat 5, and she is expected to qualify as either 2nd or 3rd. A very long US college season is expected to slightly affect her performance, but would not be surprised if she makes d finals. adaobi123: Only a single event ? I think she should have only been entered in the 100m and the relay tbh and possibly the long jump. Imo out of all the athletes, shes the only that can win a medal. Most of them may only reach the semi finals if not only the heats.D way IAAF organized d schedule makes it almost impossible 4 Okagbare not to enter for 4 events. D only event she would have considered dropping is d 200m, and it is an event I think she has won all d races she has ran dis season, but d 200m starts 2 days after d 100m final, and she is expected to have rested well b4 then. Infact her problems would not diminish if she had entered for 3 events. Her diff period is d first there days, and every other is just bonus. Let's not forget dat in 2010, at d NCAA she was involved in so many events over a short period of time. |
Nigeria would have to devise a way to cater 4 its top athletes, becos all d gains made in d past few years with regards to youthful athletes are disappearing. Not everyone can be as lucky as Okagbare. Regina George would soon leave college, and I wonder how she would fund her training. Odumosu is not improving, and d men 100m is gone. |
ola_pluto: Official team list was released today by IAAF. 18 Nigerians were listed, leaving out Leo Momoh and Ugonna Ndu. I think they are yet to be cleared to switch nationality from USA to Nigeria. The list is detailed below:I just went through ur list and I noticed dat a Certain Kemi Adekoya who ran 55.30 (A qualifying standard) in d 400m WH was not included, and she is just 20yrs. I'm not even sure dat Ugonna Ndu has d B standard. There is a possibility dat she was dropped becos she does not have d B standard, and if dat is d case d AFN messed up big time 4 leaving a young A standard runner at home. |
brownlord: Sometimes I think our journalist never visited a higher institution let alone attending one, was there any need for this " Chairman of Gidan Boss Mechanics, Lawan Hassan, who reported the matter"D journalist must be very stupid indeed. |
bambostic: Thanks for the kudos for the blog! I've slowly been ramping it up, but rest assured we will have a lot more news and material posted on the blog in the next couple of weeks for the World Championships! Yes, Obikwelu's story was quite sad for Nigeria - as a nation we must make sure that we do not lose our best athletes because of our own stupidity...let's hope that we know how to treat Blessing after she becomes a World Champion in the next week or two, because if we don't there could be a risk of losing her to the US at some point during her career - after all she has been training there for over 4 years now and on current form is better than all their girls, even including her training partner Carmelita Jeter...Obikwelu case is actually a reflection of how Nigeria economy is structured. In Nigeria , just like America u are on your own, but d diff btw Nigeria and America is dat in America d private sector takes over d training and feeding of its top athletes while d rest are left on their own. D Europeans are socialist, and their gov foot d bills of their top athletes. In d Uk d athletes are sponsored via d National sport lottery. Okagbare can never leave Nigeria and compete 4 d USA. Infact such a decision at dis stage of her career would virtually ruin her career. She would have to wait 3 yrs b4 she can compete 4 America and d American trials are usually very tough and non forgiving 4 injured athletes. She would also most probably lose her employment with d Delta state gov, and may also lose her first bank sponsorship . |
ola_pluto: Very happy to see brilliant athletics bloggers here. It gives me hope for Nigerian athletics. Back to Moscow:Okagbare has really surprised me dis season with her performance especially in d long jump. I believe she should easily qualify 4 d long jump final becos she can easily jump a 6.70 (usual qualifying distance) without even stepping on d take off board. D possible problem she could face is not having a very good first jump in d final of d LJ, where she would face some very good jumpers. Having to jump and compete six times against d best in d world might leave her mentally weak for d 100m d next day. |

Where is d possible fifth medal going to come from. I don't see any other Nigerian or Nigerian team (except d 4x400 female) making d finals, talkless of meddling. Regina George has failed to improve and Odumosu has not been herself dis season. Blessing should win a gold pls. I have been a t&f fan since I was a kid in 1992, and have followed every major championship since then, and all I have experienced is disappointment frm Nigeria athletes. Chioma Ajunwa(97), Ogunkoya(99), Alozie(99) and Obikwelu(99) failed to win gold medals despite d strong form dey showed b4 and during d WC. Okagbare should break d Gold medal curse. |
Women are safer drivers. |
When oil money is d main source of income 4 d whole country, why would d gov care about GSM and it effect on businesses and employment. |
We pay over-aged junior footballers crazy amount of money, and we can not come up with two weeks training camp allowance . I actually wonder wat AFN have been doing since after d Olympic. |
thinkdip: i dnt think she's stil wit us...cos i heard that Nigeria never looked after her welfare at all, that she went on her own expenses, welfarng her self and all sort sha.Abeg where u hear dat one from. Wat other welfare does she want. Delta state sent her on scholarship to d US, they employed her after she graduated( despite not actually working) and she gets money from her First bank sponsorship. Representing USA would be a very bad mistake on her part, becos she would not be eligible to run for dem 4 at least 3yrs, and she would not be assured of a spot at major championships. |
funky medina: You people are funny, traffic doesnt mean automatic money. Wikipedia with all its traffic is not proffitable, they have to resort to begging for donations. Nairaland ads are scanty...and i personally dont even see them.Wikipedia don't make money becos dey dont want to, if Wikipedia goes up 4 sale today, I can assure u dat it would be valued at over 2 billion dollars because of its massive potential . Nairaland might not make more money, but it is worth far more than Ikeji blog. |
With all d mountain of problems we have in dis country, it is other people sexuality u are concerned about. |
Nawa oo. Why break up with her on d wedding day |
D 7.04 jump was wind aided, but she also jumped a legal 7.00m. My only fear 4 her is qualifying 4 d finals. She will definitely medal in d LJ if she makes d final. |
*Kails*:VCB has not been suspended yet, but IAAF said it was a minor offense. D truth is dat all top jamacian sprinters (100 and 200) with d exception of Bolt and Steward have tested positive to PED one time in their career. I can still remember when Blake and Shelly Ann Fraser tested positive 4 drugs. D new coming out of Italy is dat large amount of drugs were found in Powell hotel room. |
Wizard_of_Oz: I can tell you with absolute certainty that athletes in all sports take substances to give them an edge in their profession. They all do it and they've all been convinced by their coaches n health teams that it is within the rules. The white paper of banned substances in sports is quite extensive and probably only pharmacy pros and chemist would understand the extremely long list of chemicals and supplements in that list. We don't expect the athletes to go through the list, just not possible. They only put their trust in their team that brings "painkillers" or "diet supplements" for them to drink. Only very callous and selfish athletes like Marion Jones, Maurice Green and that fraud cyclist Lance Armstrong go out of their way and knowingly consume banned substances to give them the edge. Boxers dope, so do hockey players, track and field athletes, swimmers, soccer players, tennis players. They all do it. It's sad but that's the reality. The fact that they don't get caught often just shows the length these frauds go to cover their tracks. Some even pay hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for their doping regimen and most of them don't know cos someone on their team, probably the health guys and finance guys liase to write off tht expense as something less serious, unknown to the athletes.Maurice Green has never tested positive 4 drugs, infact he his d only top American sprinter with a 9.89 or better dat has never tested positive 4 drugs. Asafa and Simpson tested positive 4 stimulant which would give them a six month ban. toprealman: Not just Bolt and Shelly....Blake,Warren Wier, etc.Actually Shelly Ann Fraser and Blake have both tested positive 4 drugs b4. |
ponco: I am happy for her, but i am still not impressed with her time, she seems to be catching up on SAFP becuase they are running slower times,sAFP ran 10.75 in the olympics, if she runs that again, blessing would be nowhere to be found, her time now, would still not have made her medal in the olympics. She needs to increase her speed.I think her time was very good. Dis time last year she had not even broken 11 secs, and u will notice dat she keeps closing d gap on SAFP on each race. A favorable wind would have increased d time to a low 10.8 when you consider that in dis race she ran into a headwind . |
success_07: I am hapi she's improvin doh i stil fil she let mi down in london last year. She shuld work on her starts cos nt everybodi can b like usain bolt...Expecting her to get a medal last year in London was unrealistic becos she just legally broke d 11 secs barrier about 4 weeks b4 d Olympics, when her competitors have been breaking 11 secs 4 a long time, and she had not beaten about 3 of d finalists b4 in her life, but dis time around, she has greatly improved, and she will surely medal unless she gets injured. bumax: she ought to get her coaches working on that aspect of her race cos it's a crucial and key part of the race. A good start for someone with her height (which is an advantage if she capitalizes on it adequately) will definitely be the difference between her winning the race and coming in at second place or last.Historically d 100m women favor shorter athletes. Blessing reaction time is actually one of d best, but her initial acceleration is very bad. |
Dis is d second time in one week dat she is dipping so early. I hope she gets a good start in Moscow becos she came from way back today. |
She seem to have a problem with locating d take off board. Dat jump would have easily been a 7.10 . At d WC I think qualifying 4 d LJ final would be more difficult Dan getting a medal. |
Jarus: Leaving at 46 after 11.5 years as MDD new MD was also an executive director at 35. Na aw oooooo |
Oyinbo wise well well. Why won't dey pour in money, when u consider d high interest rate on dis securities . |
Sky Rider: Unfortunately nigeria did not contribute to her success. In an interview she made it known that she gets her support from outside Nigeria. She is supported by first bank and d Delta state government . Infact she is currently an employee of d Delta State government. She also gets money from Nike. If other upcoming athletes gets half of wat she gets, dey will also improve. |
Regina George as expected was sixth, while Odumosu was last. D last Nigerian goes in d 110m hurdles |
Nigeria needs as much medals as we can get.
