President Goodluck Jonathan has concluded plans to organize a Sovereign National Conference, Sunday Trust learnt in Abuja at the weekend.Top government officials who spoke on condition anonymity said the Federal government has already gone far with the preparation and planning of the SNC where all ethnic groups in the country will nominate their delegates to the confab. Sources in the National Assembly said Jonathan had requested both Senate President David Mark, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to nominate two senators and two House members to represent theFederal legislature in the SNC. However, the source said, Mark and Tambuwal both turned down the request to nominate MPs to the conference insisting that, the National Assembly will not be a party to it. “I can confirm to you that both Senate president and the Speaker have received request from Mr. President to nominate two members from each of the chamber to be delegates to the SNC. But they have turned down the request because we believe it is illegal and it was an attempt to give it a legal coloration when lawmakers are part of it,” a principal officer said. “Our understanding is that, the government is desperate in its attempt to Balkanize Nigeria by insisting on the SNC and we won’t be here as true representatives of the Nigerian people and allow it happen,” the legislator said. Speaking at the commencement of the Senate’s third legislative session on Tuesday, Senator Mark said, a conference of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities called to foster frank and open discussions of the national question can “certainly find accommodation in the extant provisions of the 1999 constitution which guarantee freedom of expression and association.” “I hasten to add that it would be unconstitutional to clothe such a conference with sovereign powers,” Mark said. The senate president maintained that the National Assembly, consisting of the elected representatives of the Nigerian people cannot be ignored and that “to circumvent the constitution and its provisions on how to amend it and repose sovereignty in an unpredictable mass will be too risky and a gamble and may ultimately do great disservice to the idea of one Nigeria.” Mark further argued that, such a conference whether sovereign or not is not a magic wand and that the heights attained by great nations were not made by sudden flights. |

Power is given by God. If Ifeanyi is choosen to lead his people nobody can change it. Heaven help those who help themselves. |
These cowards that attacked innocent people in Kenya shopping mall were screeening their victims by asking them to name Prophet Mohammed mother's name as a way of identifying true muslims. Abeg wetin be Mohammed Mama name just in case our copy cat BH boys from the north want to take their cowardice to a new height and God forbid any of us are caught within an attack. |

He who remembers the poor, the poor and everyday people of your state will remember you when you need them. God bless you Ifeanyi Ubah |
Good sense of humour. The flow is good but you can always pass your article to a third eye to review since it is written for a magazine. Nonetheless, it is a very impressive write up. |
4words: The op is very silly, if your jobless, why don't you try reading your books, instead to spreading rumour mtcheeeew. You are the one being silly. NTA AIT etc has been told to report as you have stated because it was a shameful act of show of power by a military guy who was pissed off by the fact squatters were in his uncompleted building. It was a mess thus the cover-up . |

manny4life: So much "SIR" everywhere, these old worn out men have no shame in them. There is no peace in Anambra state because the rightful candidate (Soludo) was removed from the equation. In APGA, the mess going on there is terrible, for Labor party, Ifeanyi has a scandal on his head, for APC, Ngige is in limbo, for PDP, their troubles only just begun. There is too much trouble in the land, how do we resolve this with less than 7weeks left for election?Ifeanyi Ubah is God sent! Amen |
We need a man with the touch of military days and secluded from the polity for a while to help turn things around. The fear of Al, is the beginning of wisdom. |
America has lost its ally. Obama is a simple rockstar... Clueless on managing international relationship. I hear a lot of bilateral this and that between Russian and NIgeira and NIgeria with ChIna. America where are thou!!! |
francisbiz: The family have no moral justification to query the prison officials, if they could not rally round to cough out ordinary N5000 to pay the fine of a husband, brother,in-law, father, friend and relation.Because you go to the cinema and see a movie with your partner or friend at 1500 each and snack about with 2k does not mean life is same for everybody!!! People struggle you know? People do struggle. Nannies and security men earn as low as 15k a month and they have families to attend to. The fact they are poor does not make them useless. It is our society that is useless to we Nigerians. Yet we hear of looting in high places. Why should any Nigerian live below a $100 dollars a month!!! Some people can't even feed!!!! Tears oh tears. We need to empathize not abuse or insult the poor. |
N5000 price tag on the life of the poor. Nigeria!!!!! Thereabout $30 is the reason why a man was sent to his early grave for pardonable stupid sanitation offense!!!!!!!!!!! Why do we pay taxes!!!! Why should we observe environmental day!!!! What happened to waste management body of government!!!! Why are we victims of the system meant to work for us!!! Why? We need to begin to ask valid questions to change things!!! |
Jonathan did not create the problems in Nigeria, as a matter of fact, Jonathan is trying to fix things. People like Amaechi and his aboki brothers are creating problems. Don't be suprised that Amaechi may be one of the sponsors of Boko Haram. Why is it that when Boko Haram has been reduced to almost nothing did Amaech and his aboki gang members begin to create other distrsctions in the polity. |
Ameachi has spoken well but his pocket speaks a different song if you take a lucky deep. 19billion!!! for July? What do these guys do with such gigantic amount!!! No wonder they can fight Presido |
Sahara don chop bribe o!!! Abi this article na mistake! Una use levels take balance am but this is a pro jonah article. Hehehe... |
