ABUJA – A group known as North East Solidarity Forum condemned the recent secession threat made by some Yoruba groups, describing it as a treasonable felony. Listing the groups as the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), the Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF), the Oodua Foundation, Afenifere, the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), the Coalition of Yoruba Autonomy (COYA), the Oodua Democratic Coalition (ODC), the Ominira Yoruba Apapo, and the Agbekoya Organization, the Forum said that the statement was an utter reckless, calling president Mohammadu Buhari to call the groups to order. A communique signed by the Co-Ordinator General of the group, Usman Abdulkadir a meeting accused the Yoruba elders of inciting the general populace and especially the people of the South West region of the country to violence and bloodshed. The Forum which regretted that such statement could emanate from the groups which he said should have noted the ethnic configurations of the country, stressing that the kidnapping of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation was supposed to be a concern for all to help the president Buhari tackle the incessant case of kidnapping and insecurity at large. “We have gathered here today to critically examine the recent unguarded and unwarranted vituperations that emanated from the Summit of Yoruba Elders in Ibadan, Oyo State and wish to state unequivocally that the threat to secession in the South West must not be taken lightly nor ignored by the Federal Government. It must be properly investigated by the security agencies and all actors in the summit must be brought to book”, Abdukadir said. The forum recalled the situation of Boko Haram that has ravaged the North East and the various incidences of kidnapping in parts of Nigeria, asking whether the Yoruba Elders would have threatened to secede if the kidnappers of Chief Olu Falae were an Igbo or from other tribes in Nigeria. “We believe the threat of secession by the Yoruba Elders has a hidden agenda which must be unravelled urgently by the security agencies because of the weighty nature of their statement and we know that if any region is to make such call, it should have been from the North East due to the ruin the region has witnessed in the last four years”, he said. Part of the Communique read:, “A call for the breaking of Nigeria by a section of any individual or groups is a treasonable felony and there is no exception to what happened in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. “While we condemn kidnapping or any act of criminality by any indidual in the country and in any part of Nigeria, we want to use this opportunity to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to use all available means to protect the unity, oneness and integrity of this great country Nigeria. Nobody is above the law and no tribe or ethnicity can threaten our corporate existence without being called to account for their misdemeanours. The YCE should not be an exception”. The group said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/would-yoruba-elders-threatened-to-secede-if-falaes-kidnappers-were-igbo/ |

Amnesty International said last month that the Boko Haram conflict had killed at least 1,600 people since the start of June in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon and called for more protection for civilians. An AFP tally puts the death toll at more than 1,320 in Nigeria alone since Muhammadu Buhari became president on May 29. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for three suicide attacks in the satellite towns of Kuje and Nyanya outside Nigeria’s capital Abuja on October 2, which killed a total of 18 people and injured 41. on June 15, 2015, ten people were killed in twin suicide bombings in Potiskum, northeast Nigeria, a police source and a civilian vigilante assisting the military against Boko Haram told AFP on June 15. Eight vigilantes were killed in the first blast in the Igwanda area of the city, while two died in the second outside a tavern and brothel in the Dorawa area. On Tuesday, Nigeria’s most senior police officer, Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, said two people had been arrested on suspicion of masterminding the blasts. The suspects’ identities were not disclosed but Arase said in a statement the arrests had “foiled another attempt… to undertake further attacks in the FCT (Federal Capital Territory)”. Items recovered from the suspects included 12 “prepared and primed” home-made explosives concealed in soft drink cans, 28 electronic detonator parts and a “large quantity” of bomb-making equipment, he added. Nigeria’s military has claimed a series of successes in recent months and has characterised the upsurge in attacks on civilian targets as desperation on the part of the Islamic State group-alled militants. Attacks have also continued across the border. At the weekend, 41 people were killed and another 48 injured in triple explosions in Baga Sola, on the Chadian side of Lake Chad, where Nigeria meets Niger, Chad and Cameroon. One targeted a fish market and two a refugee camp for those displaced by the violence. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/boko-haram-has-killed-at-least-1600-people-since-june-amnesty-intl/

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria has asked the Yoruba Socio-Cultural group, Afenifere, to withdraw the two weeks ultimatum issued to Fulani herdsmen living in the South-west over the recent kidnap of Chief Olu Falae by alleged Fulani herdsmen. Addressing a news conference on Monday in Abuja, the National Secretary of the Association, Mr Baba Ngelzarma, condemned the recent abduction of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Mr Ngelzarma admitted that the kidnap of Falae was a criminal offence that must not be allowed to go unpunished by security agencies but noted that it was unfair to brand all Fulani herdsmen as criminals. The group added that their members were also suffering from the activities of kidnappers who collect ransom from the herdsmen in addition to carting away their cattle. The former SGF was kidnapped from his farm in Ondo State on Monday, September 21 with his abductors demanding for a cash sum of 100 million naira, later reduced to 90 million naira, as ransom. President Muhammadu Buhari consequently directed the IGP and other security agencies to take all necessary action to ensure the safe and speedy rescue of the former SGF. Chief Olu Falae, who is also a former presidential candidate, was released by his captors on Thursday, September 24. Two weeks after his release, five of the eight abductors of the elder statesman were nabbed in Niger, Ekiti and Ondo states by the Special Intelligence Team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/falae-abduction-withdraw-your-2-wks-ultimatum-fulani-group-tells-afenifere/ |

TWO suspected members of a robbery gang met their waterloo recently, after they were arrested by policemen from Ogun State Police command. The suspects who gave their names as Ajose Ebenezer and Olaosegbe Idowu, were arrested in their victim’s apartment at Oke-Ola area of Abeokuta, during an operation. The suspects, said to have been among other robbery gangs that had been terrorizing residents of the area, invaded some houses as usual about two weeks ago at midnight. They were clad in Army Camouflage nicker. Informed sources said, the hoodlums gained entrance into one of the buildings through the fence and had succeeded in dispossessing their victims of cash, laptops and other valuables when detectives arrived the scene. Before leaving the apartment, they reportedly locked their victims inside one of the rooms, attempted to escape only to fall into the waiting hands of armed policemen, who had earlier been tipped-off. One of the suspects, Olaosegbe Idowu, a carpenter, revealed during this interview how what started like a child’s play, snowballed into a worrisome phenomenon to the consternation of his parents. The genesis Recalling how it all started years back in his primary school days, when he was barely nine years, 26 year-old Idowu said: “ This thing started when I was in primary school. Then I was stealing my class mates’ books, pencils and money. I was also stealing at home, though my parents tried all they could to stop me. “I was not a brilliant child and wanted to leave school and venture into something else, but my parents would not allow me. I managed to scale through primary school but on getting to secondary level, I could not cope and had to drop out in Junior Secondary School, JSS 2. Idowu added: “I must state here that my parents never contributed to what I am today because they tried their best for me. My father even took me to learn carpentry. But as if I was never meant to be a good boy, I graduated into smoking Indian hemp”. Like honey that will always attract bees, Idowu, during one of his visits to the Indian hemp joint, met a group of persons that changed the entire course of his life for the worse. He said: “In the course of my frequent visits to the Indian hemp joint, I met some boys who were always buying drinks for whoever came to smoke. I later got acquainted with them and they introduced me into robbery. I joined them mainly because the carpentry job was not yielding me money. We were eight in number and so far, I have gone on an operation with them eight times.” His arrest Like everything that has a beginning that must have an end, the long arm of the law eventually caught up with Idowu who blamed his arrest on greed, revealing that rather than going for an operation with the actual number of members of the gang, he decided to go with only one of them, apparently to have a larger share of the loot. Said he: “We got information that our victim was rich and I and Ajose Ebenezer decided to storm the residence without allowing other members to know. We went there at night, jumped through the fence and found our way into the apartment around Oke_Ola Area. We had removed all we needed and were about to take our leave when armed policemen swooped on us.” Recovered items Recovered from the suspects, according to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Daura were a locally made single barrel gun, a UTC axe, HP laptop computer which was collected from their victim, a soldier camouflage nicker and a bag containing damaged mobile handsets, suspected to have earlier been stolen from their victims. Idowu confessed to policemen that he bought the locally made gun from a goldsmith for N5000. His alleged partner in crime, Ajose Ebenezer, a commercial motorcyclist, claimed he was introduced to the gang by Idowu, during one of his visits to the Indian hemp joint, blaming his indulgence on his being a helpless orphan. Ebenezer, 21, said: “I fend for myself and nobody among my immediate and distant family members has asked after my well being. That was why I did not hesitate when Idowu sold the idea to me. Unfortunately, this is my third time of going for an operation. He said: “In the first raid, I realized N5, 000. I got N4, 000 from the second. My share is low because all I do is to carry the bag containing the weapons during any operation.” The suspects according to Daura, would be charged to court, adding that the command would not rest on its oars until criminal elements were chased out of the state. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/01/i-started-robbing-from-primary-school-confesses-robbery-suspect/

ABUJA – President Mohammadu Buhari and Auditor General of the Federation, AGF, Samuel Ukura on Monday disagreed over the environmental audit reports on the drying-up of the Lake Chad. While the president noted that the report did not take into account the feasibility study conducted by a team under the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasabjo which cost Nigeria $5 million, the AGF insisted that that was outside his supervision, saying that Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) has that responsibility. But the president insisted that the AGF should give relevant explanations of the omission. The development caused a minor stir in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, where the presentation was made. Following the silence of surprise that ensued, the President requested that someone should interprete what the AGF meant, and later asked the Executive Secretary of the LCBC, Ambassador Sanusi Imran Abdullahi, to give his side of the story. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, berated the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the credentials of its candidates in the Kogi and Bayelsa States forthcoming governorship election, makes a mockery of the party’s anti-corruption stance. The PDP in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, described as a shameful irony and display of crass hypocrisy, the fact that a ruling party that prides itself as an anti-corruption crusader, will field candidates being held on corruption charges, saying such has further exposed the insincerity of the APC. The party said “it is a mockery of strategy that the APC which has been touting the fight against corruption as its major policy, would present to the people of the two states, candidates whose public questionable credentials are further evidenced in the charges brought against them by anti-graft agencies. “In Kogi, we have the APC brazenly fielding, for the November 21 governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu, a former governor of the state that was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for corruption, and who is now facing charges before the court, of breach of trust, embezzling and misappropriating the sum of N10.9 billion meant for the development of his state. “In the same vein, in Bayelsa state, the APC is fielding, for the December 5 election, Chief Timipre Sylva, also a former governor of the state, who is similarly before the court on charges of embezzlement of a staggering sum of N19.2 billion belonging to Bayelsa State. “This APC candidate in Bayelsa is being charged by the EFCC for embezzling funds meant for state workers for a period four years, ‘under false pretence’ of using the funds to augment their salaries. “Now that the APC is brazenly fielding candidates with questions of corruption, we ask, do they in all honesty expect Nigerians to take them seriously on their much-hyped anti-corruption crusade? “Does the APC expect the people of Kogi and Bayelsa states to be fooled into voting for the same individuals who are facing charges of looting funds meant for the development of their respective states? “Also, the controversies trailing the primaries conducted by the so-called APC’s best hands, to produce these candidates with questionable credentials, further foreground the corruption prevalent in the party, which has also manifested in the presence of some persons with debatable reputations in the 21-man list of ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate for clearance. “Evidently, the APC has clearly established itself as a party enmeshed and thriving in corruption, even as it tries to hoodwink the public into believing that it is on a mission to fight graft in the country, a contradiction we urge all Nigerians to take copious note of. “It has therefore become manifest that this administration’s anti-corruption agenda is dead on arrival and only applicable as a tool for witch hunt against the PDP and those holding views divergent to those of the government. Consequently, this is an open invitation by the APC to corrupt persons to join them as a party that accommodates, protects and promotes corruption in the country. “Our joy remains that the people of Kogi and Bayelsa will definitely reject this attempt to use immunity to cloak and protect friends and associates of the ruling party and government from further prosecution. “It is on this note that we urge the people of the two PDP states to remain unrelenting in their support for our great party and its candidates; Governors Idris Wada and Seriake Dickson respectively, to ensure their deserving overwhelming victory at the polls,” the PDP said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/gov-election-audu-sylva-mockery-of-apc-anti-corruption-stance-pdp/ |

Governors of the 19 Northern states on Friday inaugurated a committee to look at the activities of sponsors of Boko Haram with a view to prosecuting them. The Chairman, Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, while inaugurating the committee at the Hassan Katsina House in Kaduna, noted that the days of the deadly sect were numbered considering the current bombardment of the insurgents by troops. He added that with the superior fire power of the troops, the insurgents had been dislodged from their strongholds in the North-East. He said the committee, which comprised the attorneys-general and commissioners of justice of the 19 Northern states, was given the mandate to review the criminal justice system in the North. Shettima said the inauguration of the committee became necessary in view of the problems of insurgency, cattle rustling, armed robbery and kidnapping confronting the Northern states. According to him, the committee has two months to carry out its assignment. The governor asked the committee to conduct a thorough and meticulous review of the penal code with a view to pointing out its weaknesses and constraints in the overall administration of criminal justice system in the North. Shettima said, “The committee should also look at the condemnable activities of the sponsors of the insurgency and come up with legally pragmatic, appropriate and proportionate punishment. “The committee should also focus specifically on parents, who because of some pittance, sacrifice their children as suicide bombers. Such parents must be made to face the full wrath of the law. “The committee also has the mandate to carefully analyse the various emergent security challenges confronting the Northern states and determine how best to incorporate them into the penal code for proper and effective administration of justice.” The governor, however, cautioned the committee against making recommendations that would conflict with the 1999 constitution of Nigeria. The governor said, “The establishment of this committee is the direct outcome of one of the resolutions of the last meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum held here in Kaduna on September 11, 2015 to the effect that most of the criminal offences currently being perpetrated especially in this part of the country like kidnapping, cattle rustling and inciting religious preaching, inter-alia have either not been adequately covered by the penal code or not at all. “ Therefore it has become a matter of strategic imperative to review the existing criminal justice system in its entirety in order to ensure that it is up to date and consistent with our current situation. “The Boko Haram insurgency, which has been raging on for the past six years, is one of the many serious security challenges we are experiencing. “It has been generally agreed that one of the root causes of the insurgency was inciting preaching by the sect which inevitably stoked the violence and culminated in the extremely complicated and unconventional security situation facing this part of the country and in particular the North-East.” http://www.punchng.com/news/northern-governors-begin-search-for-boko-haram-sponsors/ |
Thats what they are known for.....ritualists-cum drug traffickers |
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos have arrested a South African-based Nigerian, Ayoola Adebayo, with 3.920kg of substances found to be methamphetamine. A statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Friday stated that the drug was concealed in false bottom of the two bags the suspect wanted to check-in at the departure hall of the airport. It added that the arrest took place during the outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian airline flight to South Africa. NDLEA commander at the airport, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, said the case was being investigated. The suspect, who is married with two children and holds a Higher National Diploma in Estate Management from Osun State College of Technology in 2006, said he made a mistake getting involved in drug trafficking, saying he never knew he could be caught. He said, “I sell food and small household goods in Pretoria and I have lived in South Africa for over three years. My friend in Pretoria asked me to bring the two bags to him. He bought my return ticket and gave me N150,000. ADVERTISEMENT “I thought the drug would not be detected because it was neatly concealed. This is a big mistake on my part because I have sustained my family with the grocery business. It will not happen again if I can get out of this problem.” The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade, said in anticipation of the increase in drug trafficking at the airports, seaports and land borders, the agency had taken additional measures to detect hidden drugs at all exit and entry points in the country. He added that the suspect would soon be arraigned in court. http://www.punchng.com/feature/super-saturday-crime/ndlea-arrests-south-african-based-nigerian-with-drugs/

Twenty three persons were killed and 295 houses destroyed during the September 15 invasion of Kadunung village in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State by gunmen. Secretary of Mangu Local Government Council, Mr. John Tamba, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Mangu. Tamba said 852 Internally Displaced Persons from Kadunang were being camped in three camps in Mangu. He said 353 of them were children under five years and 36 pregnant women, and that the 852 IDPs were camped at Boto, Bwalbwang and Doss camps, all in Gindiri District of Mangu. Tamba said at the initial stage of the crisis, the council provided relief materials worth over N2m to the victims. He said the council in conjunction with SEMA and NEMA were gathering relief materials to present to the victims toward rehabilitating them. “We will ensure that every household benefits from any assistance that may come, no matter how small,” he said. These are the kind people that need to be arrested. Not genuine business men from the east with their leigitimately-earned hard currency |
A 42-year-old man, Rafiu Olusamokun, is currently in the custody of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly producing fake foreign and local currencies, which allegedly run into millions of naira. Our correspondent learnt that Olusamokun, an indigene of Owo, Ondo State, was arrested by the police in his house at Ayidolapo Street, in the Ikotun area of the state. PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect, who was a motor mechanic before allegedly venturing into production of fake currencies, worked with some people who were still at large. It was learnt that the police recovered an iron box full of fake dollars, pounds and naira notes from Olusamokun. Some materials such as cotton wool, paints and oil, allegedly used in the production of the money, were also recovered by the police. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the suspect said he was introduced into the business by some men who claimed to have newly returned from Europe. Olusamokun said the men brainwashed him and forced him to pay about N600,000 to purchase the materials to produce the fake currencies. He said, “I met those people early this year. I was working as a motor mechanic, and I just ran into them. They said they recently returned from Europe. When I visited them at a hotel in the Bar Beach, Victoria Island area, they brought out the samples of the currencies they had, and said I could produce same if I wanted to become wealthy. “I was immediately interested. A friend, Sule Sulaimon, who went with me, also became interested. Their leader said all I needed to do was to purchase the chemicals from them. He said I should bring N1m, but I eventually paid N650,000 for the chemicals. “I did not know the samples they gave me were fake; the papers looked so original. I first gave him N400,000, and then N250,000. He said I could reproduce as much hard currencies as I wanted from the materials I had. “The currencies recovered from my house runs into millions, but I was not through with the reproduction. If I had finished with it, I would have been a wealthy man. I would have evaded the arrest.” A police source told our correspondent that Olusamokun was to give part of the money reproduced to the syndicate, so that he could be given more materials. He added that the police were still on the trail of the group. “The syndicate gave him the materials and the currencies to wash into original. The money is actually worth millions. He was producing €100 and €200 and pounds. The police found the fake cash in his house,” he said. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigations were over. “The police will continue to ensure that we reduce crimes to the barest minimum in the state,” he added. http://www.punchng.com/news/man-produces-fake-dollars-pounds-worth-millions/
