Some leaders of Okunraye Community in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State recently arraigned for the murder of Tajudeen Disu, Managing Director of Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) Limited, who was killed on October 12, 2015, yesterday accused the police of committing the murder. This claim is contained in affidavit in support of a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed on Tuesday before the Lagos High Court in Igbosere by the community leaders. They specifically alleged that contrary to initial accusation against them, it was, indeed, a stray bullet from one of the mobile policemen deployed to the venue of the tragic incident that hit Disu from behind and killed him instantly. The applicants in the suit are, Jubriala Balogun, Akibu Razak, Alhaji Surajudeen Salami, Baale Yesiru Amusa (suing for themselves and on behalf of the people of Okunraye town), while the defendants are Nigerian Police, Inspector General of Police, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, The Nigerian Army, Department of State Security (DSS), Special Anti-Robbery Squad, the Dangote Group and Ibeju Lekki Local Government. It will be recalled that a Lagos Chief Magistrate Court Sitting in Ebute Meta area of the state, last week Thursday, ordered that 17 persons, arrested by the police in connection with the murder be remanded in prison custody for 30 days, pending trial. But in their suit before the high court, they are urging the court for order, directing the respondents to release them unconditionally from custody, and an order declaring their arrest and continuous detention as wrongful and a sharp contravention of their fundamental human rights enshrined in Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). http://leadership.ng/news/468726/police-killed-lagos-ft-zone-boss-not-us-community-leaders-tell-court |
This Chibok issue is becoming a tale by the moon light. The same number of girls abducted have not changed from the reports we get both from the press, the military and the governm Best jokes of the century, am watching videos of Buhari's boys (Boko haram) operating more offensively in an open land ,why not using air strike to kill off those rebels if the fight against Boko haram is not against north like General Buhari said. |
ABUJA—The Nigerian Army, yesterday, issued a final warning to Boko Haram terrorists who are yet to surrender, to do so without further delay in order to escape the impending final onslaught. The Nigerian army High Command gave the warning even as it warned that the 219 Chibok girls still being held by the terrorists must be freed immediately, without any other condition by the terrorists. Vanguard gathered that the final ultimatum followed the security meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Monday, during which the President was briefed on the strategies to ensure his directive for an end to insurgency in December was achieved. A statement in this regard by Colonel Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations said: “This is to finally warn all Boko Haram terrorists, wherever they are, to desist from all acts of terrorism, surrender themselves and face the law now. “We wish to inform them that we are aware of all their hideouts, camps and enclaves. They should follow their colleagues who have so far surrendered. “Failure to surrender will result in serious consequences as our troops have closed up with them. “We equally appeal to members of the international community and the world at large, to kindly persuade Boko Haram terrorists and their international collaborators to desist from acts of terrorism and renounce their membership of the terrorist organization forthwith. “They should also immediately and unconditionally release all abducted persons in their custody, including the Chibok schoolgirls.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/army-issues-final-warning-to-boko-haram-terrorists/ |
Since the beginning of the past week, the Nigerian Senate has been involved in the ministerial screening of two batches of ministerial nominees sent by President Muhammadu Buhari. Among the nominees is the former governor of Rivers state and the All Progressive Congress (APC) campaign director during the March 28 presidential elections, Rotimi Amaechi. But since the commencement of the exercise, the Senate has twice boycotted Amaechi’s screening. This could be based on various reasons: 1. Lack of support from Rivers state senators Some days back, three senators from Rivers state, George Sekibo, Olaka Nwogu and Osinachukwu Ideozu, had opposed the clearance of Amaechi with a petition laid before the Senate by Sekibo. The senators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed their opposition on the Senate home support rule necessary for the clearance of a ministerial nominee. But the senate spokesperson, Senator Dino Malaye, said that the home support rule is less sacrosanct, meaning that the former governor still has a chance to be screened. 2. Petitions against Amaechi Having taken over from his predecessor as the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike has made several allegations on Amaechi. Subsequently, the allegations bordering on corruption and misappropriation of state’s fund have followed up by a petition against the former governor by an Integrity group. The group wrote to the senate saying that Amaechi is yet to answer questions on the allegations leveled against him in the state. On deferring of his screening, the senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions said the committee could not meet up with the submission of its report due to the delayed plenary adjournment. Nigerians are also hopeful that on the resumption of screening, Amaechi will be screened alongside other nominees. 3. Ameachi’s fight with the former first lady Patience Jonathan Before the end of the past administration’s tenure, Amaechi went into misunderstanding with Patience Jonathan. This misunderstanding started after the former president Goodluck Jonathan announced Plateau state’s Jonah Jang as the chairman of the Nigerian governor’s forum over Amaechi who floored Jang with three votes. This crisis was later taken over by Evan Bipi, a Rivers state house of assembly lawmaker, in favour of the former first lady. The crisis led to Amaechi’s romance with the APC and subsequently earning him the title: “the most controversial governor”. 4. Dwindling popularity Since the inauguration of the Buhari-led administration, Amaechi has failed to be in the news as compared to his days as the most controversial governor. This trend has also dwindled as the former governor rarely made an appearance in the news until the allegations against him by Wike emerged and also his nomination as a minister by the president. Meanwhile, since the screening exercise, the former governor has written three letters to the senate pleading innocence of the allegations against him. The former governor said that all the allegations against him by his state senators and his predecessors are false. He also said the essence of the allegation is to tarnish his image and to solely irritate, embarrass and bedevil his hard-earned reputation. https://www.naij.com/607679-ministerial-screening-4-top-reasons-amaechi-may-not-be-screened.html

Simply put, the army chiefs can longer decode the president's body odour(signals). In that case, I advise the president relocates to Maiduguri and ooze his body odour ( offensive) directly to the Boko Haram. After all, in a recent interview with Aljazeera, he said instead of resigning he'll engage the Boko Haram one on one. Now, that his soldiers can no longer meet the December deadline is it not time the C-in-C led the war from the front? The deadline was a fatal error in the first place. terror is not something u set a date for. what if they wait and strike from January? u people better start fighting Islamic hardcore preachers now or live with terror till thy kingdom come. |
Excuse galore...... This is deception and cluelesness taken too far. Boko Haram does not observe the weather in wrecking havoc. Our military are already making weather the excuse for not meeting December target. For how long shall we live in this national horror...? I am being daily vindicated for not contributing to the emergence of this inept drunkard from Daura |
ABUJA – The December deadline given to the Nigerian Army by president Mohammadu Buhari to completely rout out Boko Haram insurgents in the North east may not be feasible after all, as Service Chiefs on Monday told the president that their effort was being threatened by weather and logistics. The Service Chiefs however did not specifically ask for extension of time. Speaking to State House Correspondents on behalf of the Chiefs after a Security meeting with president Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja to brief him on the efforts of the military so far in the troubled north east, the Chief of Defense Staff, CDS, Abayomi Olonishakin and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Alhaji Ismalia Aliyu, said the military was still on course despite the challenges. Olonishakin said: “It is a normal consultation to intimate him of the issues on ground we briefed him on the security situation on ground after a 60-day review and we had to brief him on the challenges we have and ensure that the mandate we have is properly delivered. “Of course, the challenges we are looking at are the issues of probably the weather as it were and some other logistics that we feel we should have so that the mandate can be quickly delivered. He is very excited, very happy. As for our request, he gave the mandate. Extension of the deadline? “We have not said that. The mandate is that we should clear Boko Haram from the occupied territories and ensure that we reclaim all the lost grounds. That is exactly what we are doing. Is the mandate feasible? “It is a military operation and military operations have time-lines and these time-lines, we are working on the assiduously”. The CDS also confirmed the contributions of the governments of both United States of America and the United kingdom. “When we get there, we will let you know. They have been involved in some capacity building and of course the tangible ones. But when we get there, we will let you know about it”. In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Alhaji Aliyu also hinted that the presidential directive was for the military to stay on task even as he expressed confidence in the ability of the military to ensure that the mandate was realized. “We are here to brief the president on the situation of what armed forces have been doing in the north east and the south south. That is exactly what we discussed with Mr President. “The directive is that we should continue what we have been doing and in the next few days, there will be another meeting. But by and large the president is excited and confident that the leadership of the Nigerian armed forces that he puts in will do us proud”, he said. The meeting also had the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Babagana Monguno in attendance. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/boko-haram-weather-logistics-challenges-threatening-december-deadline-service-chiefs-tell-buhari/ |

Tension is currently brewing at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Yaba, Lagos, as heavily armed policemen, on Monday, besieged the hospital, allegedly preventing medical doctors under the aegis of the FNPH chapter of the National Medical Association (NMA), from holding a protest. Recall, that the medical doctors in conjunction with other health professionals in the hospital are bickering with the acting Medical Director (MD), Dr. Rahman Lawal, over the latter’s renewed appointment as the Ag. Medical Director. Lawal’s four-year tenure ended this year, few months after he attained the compulsory retirement age of 60. While the medical workers are saying he did not have the locus standi under the public service rule to stand a chance to be re-appointed for another term, Lawal has always insisted that he is qualified for another tenure, because he retired in 2011 as a medical consultant to pave way for him to be MD, even after the age of 60. Two of the 1,191 pilgrims from Oyo State who performed this year’s Hajj were detained by the Saudi Arabian authorities for a drug-related offence. Alhaji Adeleke AbdulKareem, the Secretary, Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Monday. Abdulkareem said the affected pilgrims were females, adding that one of them escaped while the other was still in detention. He said that the drug found with the pilgrims was Tramador, a contraband in Saudi Arabia, which the pilgrims had been warned against. The secretary also said that two other pilgrims from the state died due to ill health before Arafat Day. Abdulkareem said that the last batch of pilgrims from the state arrived Nigeria on Oct. 11. He warned pilgrims to always comply with the rules and regulation of the Saudi authorities to avoid being arrested or tarnishing the country’s image. The senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, on Sunday identified 13 factors responsible for the emergence of the Boko Haram insurgency, especially in North-East Nigeria. Speaking when he received a delegation of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, MSSN, in his Kaduna office, Mr. Sani described Boko Haram as a “demonic force” and a serious threat to the religion of Islam, Nigeria and humanity. He said there was no better time than now for the MSSN to play a key role in addressing issues that bedevil the people, the region and the country. “Your relevance today is very much needed in terms of finding solutions to the challenges of our era and challenge of our generation. “I have been able to identify 13 factors that have seriously contributed to pervasive insecurity and the wave of violence and bloodshed ignited and sustained by insurgency in the North-eastern part of Nigeria. “We have reached a point in the North where we are not safe in the mosque, not safe in office, not safe in church and in any public gathering,” he said. Enumerating the factors, Mr Sani identified manipulation of religion as first major factor. “The first and very strong factor has to do with manipulation of religion. There is no doubt those who took up the part of extremism sow its seed from manipulating and distorting religious teachings. “The second is the disconnect between government and the governed. The growing gap between the leader and the led has created a vacuum, and has made it possible for violent extremists to take over that vacuum and propagate their murderous ideology. “The third factor is the prevalence of social and economic injustices. What you refuse to invest in social security, you must spend on national security. “The fourth factor is the global terror epidemic – terror contagion. Terrorism in Yemen, in Afghanistan, in Somalia, in Africa spreads its cancerous effect destroying lives and property. “The fifth factor is the collapse of public education. Normal schools that should have provided meaningful education to our children have collapsed, and as such people who cannot find good place to learn, they will go and learn from bad places. “Then we have the massive unemployment as the sixth factor. Many of our young people that ought to live decent and responsible life are roaming about in the street. People like these are vulnerable and represent one of the most potent threats to our collective existence, our unity, our peace and our democracy. “As the seventh factor, we have the prolification of arms and unguarded boarders. It has become easy for arms to move around our country, so accessible that our boarders are porous and as such extremists find it easier to pick up guns and ammunition to fight. “The eighth factor is the under-development of the North by previous administrations. It is very clear that governments in the past have not used the opportunity of power to educate the region, to develop the region, to lift our people out of poverty. So, there was irresponsibility in governance at that time. Continuing, Mr. Sani also identified human rights abuse and extra-judicial killing as another important factor. “[The ninth factor is] Human right abuses and extra-judicial killings. This is another very important factor. If you violate the fundamental rights of your citizens, all you are encouraging is act of lawlessness because lawlessness begets lawlessness. The root cause of this insurgency was triggered by the Killing of a leader out of the confines of the law and since then, we never knew peace. This is an issue. “Economic collapse of the North is the tenth. Most of our industries have closed down. Our economy is as arid as our weather. Most of our states depend on oil revenues to pay salaries and execute capital project. We have neglected agriculture, we refuse to explore solid minerals, we refuse to use our power, which is the wealth of people we have to advance our region. “[As eleventh factor] we can also say that capitalism breeds terrorism. Where we have an institutionalized master-servant relationship, where you have a system that is unjust, unfair and unconcerned about the state of the poor, then you have created a ground for people to take desperate measures to survive. Mr. Sani identified lack of unity and ethnic crisis in the North as the twelfth factor. “Disunity in the North occasioned by intra-fighting between ethnic groups and believes have created a vacuum. So, for us to win a war that has threatened our collective existence, unity is inevitable. As the thirteenth factor, the senator said: “And then I can say the distortion of religious realities and facts is the seed of terrorism. That is where the seed is. If you are a preacher and you distort the teachings of religion and bring something that is not supposed to be there, you are creating a monster. “Therefore, for us to win the war against insurgency, we must break the wall of fear. Our religious clerics should choose the option of either engaging the insurgents or confronting them. The battle against insurgency is the battle for the soul of Islam, for the soul of the North and for the soul of Nigeria. “We must in every respect take these battle as our collective battle,” he said. He said the MSSN had a role to play by being Muslims and by being students to speak to the new generation. Earlier, the president of MSSN, Kaduna State Area Unit, Salihu Bindawa, lamented the banning of Hijab in public places and in schools. “Muslims are not terrorists. We want to use this avenue to appeal to you to take our case to the Senate,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/191750-kaduna-senator-shehu-sani-identifies-13-factors-fuelling-boko-haram-insurgency.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who is leading the 54-member nations of the Commonwealth as part of the international observers to monitor the Tanzanian general election scheduled for October 25 is billed to leave the country this Monday for Dar es Salaam. Reports indicated that Jonathan is walking into the warm embrace of many Tanzanians who are upbeat and confident that his presence would bring credibility to the polls which analysts consider the toughest and closest elections in the country’s history. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party which has been in power since the country’s return to multiparty democracy in 1992 is up against a united opposition that has increasingly been making significant electoral gains. As Tanzanians prepare to vote in either side, they are happy that high profile observers including Jonathan, who they consider as ‘a hero of free and fair election in Africa’, would be on ground to monitor the elections. They are hoping that their presence would ensure a transparent and peaceful election process. Paying tribute to Jonathan in a recent editorial ahead of the elections, The Daily News of Tanzania commended the former president for taking his defeat in the last presidential election “in all magnanimity,” adding that “Jonathan may very well have averted bloodshed that is characteristic of incumbent leaders who cling in power tooth and nail, fang and claw! What lesson is there in this for us in Tanzania, pray?” In the editorial entitled: ‘Salutary lessons for Tanzania from Nigeria’s latest elections; the paper said further: “It is generally admitted that the election in Nigeria was unprecedentedly free, fair and transparent, whereby the opposition candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, won the Presidency. What is more remarkable is that the incumbent president who sought re-election, Goodluck Jonathan, … most graciously accepted the results promptly! “Oh, I don’t know beyond the fact that Tanzania could tragically do worse if it fails to dedicatedly take a leaf out of Nigeria’s newest book on elections!” Similarly, the Guardian of Tanzania also poured encomiums on former President Jonathan, describing him as a democrat who has pointed the way forward for the rest of Africa. In its own editorial comment entitled ‘High profile figures among observers will add credibility to poll process, results’, The Guardian stated: “Jonathan’s voluntary handover of power to the opposition wrote a new chapter for Nigeria’s democracy, given the fact that it is rare for sitting presidents in Africa to hand over powers to winning opposition parties.” Reports also indicate that the people of Tanzania are happy to see Jonathan lead the Commonwealth election monitoring team because of his exemplary feat of conceding defeat even before the end of the electoral process and subsequently handing over power to the opposition party. While in Tanzania, Jonathan is billed to meet with the country’s president, Jakaya Kikwete, other heads of delegation as well as the local and international media. President Muhammed Buhari profusely praised Jonathan for being magnanimous enough to initiate a telephone conversation where he conceded defeat even before the final votes were tallied, thus saving the nation from predicted Armageddon. While receiving the handover notes from the former President, Buhari had said: “What I will say is since the telephone call you made, you have changed the course of Nigeria’s political history. For that, you have earned yourself a place in our history, for stabilising this system of multi party democracy system and you have earned the respect of not only Nigerians but world leaders. “All the leaders that spoke to me and congratulated us for arriving at the point we arrived, mentioned this and I could understand, a lot of relief in their voices that Nigeria has made it after all and this is largely owed to a situation. “If you (Jonathan) had attempted to make things difficult, you could have made things difficult and that would have been at the expense of lives of poor Nigerians, but you choose the part of honour and may God help all of us. Thank you very much your excellency.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/election-monitoring-tanzanians-laud-jonathan-s-exemplary-record/223223/

Former President Goodluck Jonathan almost broke down in tears on Friday over the death of a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. Jonathan in an emotional voice said he remained indebted to Alamieyeseigha, noting that without the former governor nobody would have known him in the world. Lamenting the sudden demise of Alamieyeseigha, the ex-president said he had lost an elder brother. Jonathan, who started his political journey by serving as Alamieyeseigha’s deputy from 1999 to 2005, said he was saddened by the unexpected demise of his former boss. The former president spoke when he paid a condolence visit to the family of Alamieyeseigha at their residence in Opolo, Yenagoa. In his entourage were the Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, his deputy, John Jonah, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Edmund Allison-Oguru, other officials of government and elder statesmen. Alamieyeseigha’s widow, Margaret, on sighting Jonathan broke down in tears and wept uncontrollably. Jonathan said his relationship with Alamieyeseigha was not that of a governor and a deputy governor but that of an elder brother and a younger brother. He said: “It is sad. I directly worked as a deputy governor to Alamieyeseigha. I knew Alamieyeseigha during the UNCP days when we were working for him. “I never knew I was going to be his deputy because that was not my interest then. From that time, the political evolution in the country and the state brought me to work with him. “And from 1999, we have been together. He always took me as his younger brother. Our relationship was not that of a governor and a deputy but it was that of a younger brother and an elder brother.” http://thenationonlineng.net/without-alamieyeseigha-nobody-would-have-known-me-jonathan/ |

The Lagos State Association of Indigenous Youths, LAIY, has accused Senate President Bukola Saraki of being…. behind a recent media report that is aimed at pitching a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu against the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. A national daily had reported on 10 October that the presidency was building a ring of security surveillance around Tinubu over the latter’s alleged rage concerning the ministerial list submitted by President Buhari to the Senate for screening. The report was also quoted as saying that Tinubu had since begun moves against the President by lobbying to parley Senate President Bukola Saraki to jointly revolt against Buhari and that Tinubu was trying to exit the country and fight this battle from abroad. In a press release issued on Wednesday by Comrade Sofwan Temitope Ogungbo, President of LAIY, the group said it suspected Senate President Bukola Saraki’s hand in the fake media report, adding that, this could be intended to stir a controversy within the party and shift attention away from Saraki’s case before the Code of Conduct Tribunal and disparage Tinubu, who he believes is a predominant force behind his trial ordeal. LAIY condemned the media report describing it as baseless, derogatory, childish, cheap and unprofessional. While lamenting that there are masked enemies who are bent on discrediting Tinubu because they envy his achievements in the current national political space, LAIY said: “the media report was nothing but sponsored fabrication to achieve heinous objectives.” “This is not the first time we are reading speculative and junk media report on the relationship between Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu and President Buhari. “It only comes out funnier with the appendage that Asiwaju is even lobbying Saraki to wage war on President Buhari. “We think this kind of story coming from a popular newspaper betrays intelligence and journalism. It is a story that will not fly if told to a student in secondary school.“It is nothing but sponsored fiction targeted at a man who is living his dream as a common sense revolutionist and liberator of the masses.” The group described as funny the way Asiwaju Tinubu was used as object of speculation every time a national issue arises adding that it is unthinkable to assume Tinubu would begin to destroy a house he strove build. “Even among achievers, there is a distinguished champion,” the statement said. According to the group, “Tinubu remains a respected leader who understands the rudiments and advanced nature of politics and is a leader who does not go for cheap political game-play in the country.” It urged the APC National Leader to remain steadfast in the face of people playing games to create a face-off between the him and the presidency while warning that it would resist any attempt to malign the former governor of Lagos State. http://naijchronicles.com/?p=459 |
