There are no signs specific to HIV. What we see are signs of immunosuppresion; which we can see in any immunosuppressive disorder, even diabetes if left untreated. There are some direct cytopathic effects of HIV, but this will not ordinarily manifest in the asymptomatic stage.
What tips off the clinician as to the possibility of HIV infection is a constellation of signs and symptoms.

Just betraying your ignorance. HIV actually masquerades like other illnesses. In historic times, it used to be syphilis (another STI) but in our time; it is now HIV infection. HIV infection affects all organ systems and so it is no surprise that it's presentation runs the gamut of all organ systems. Some of my patients first intimation of their infection was by the fact that they came down with a stroke.

It's sad. But some headway is being made. There is more awareness of the infection now. The messages are going out and recent. . .sentinel surveys seem to indicate a drop in prevalence. Also less people are dying of HIV/AIDS thanks to increased availability of the antiretroviral drugs; like in the clinic where I work; all our patients are on free antiretrovirals.

Fortunately, the epidemic in West Africa has not witnessed the explosive rates seen in East and Southern African.

On universities: it would help if we took a holistic look at the situation instead of just going with our emotions. The truth is that Nigeria needs more universities. Our population of 150 million (about half that of the United States) does not have enough universities. This is self-evident when we realize that approximately 1 million people write JAMB every year; and our universities can only cater for less than half that number. What are we to do? The existing universities can only cater for a limited number, so more are needed. It is not enough to improve on the existing ones. For example in metropolitan Chicago alone; there are more than 32 universities. By the time you add the 2-year and 4-year colleges and graduate schools it's more than the number of universities in Nigeria.
How many universities in Nigeria? Less than 40, if I am not mistaken and a single city in the USA has more tertiary institutions than the whole of Nigeria has universities!

It is sad to state that there are states and cities in Nigeria with even higher prevalence of HIV infection than Akwa-Ibom (though thankfully not at the level of Southern Africa); Port-Harcourt, Abuja, Benue State, though Akwa-Ibom still ranks up there. The national prevalence is just below 5% (can't remember the exact figures now).

The spokesperson for the presidential campaign council, Mallam Abba Dabo, who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday, said that the results from across the country did not indicate that the chances of Jonathan were slim.

He said that with the result from Kano State, which he said indicated that the PDP was having an edge over the All Nigerian Peoples Party, the ruling party in the state, the PDP was on its way to winning the state and also the presidency.

He said, “Great outcome, if you look at the result of the National Assembly election across the states. Though we lost in the South-West and some states, but despite the permutation of some people, we did not lose in the North-West as being envisaged.

“Yes, we lost in Katsina beyond our expectations, but you can see that we also won in Kano State against all odds and permutations. We are winning.

“Our meeting is expected to review the results and plan afresh. Don’t forget that other political parties would also meet. So, our meeting is not based on panicking.”

He said those expecting runoff in the presidential election should bury the thought, “because Jonathan is going to win with a wide margin.”
