JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem has accused radical Israeli groups of threatening the presence of Christians in the holy city, in remarks that Israeli officials rejected as baseless.

In a column in the Times of London on Saturday, His Beatitude, Theophilos III, said he believed the aim was to drive the Christian community from Jerusalem's Old City, which has sites sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Israel captured East Jerusalem, including the Old City, along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a 1967 war. It annexed East Jerusalem after the war in a move that has not won international recognition.

"Our presence in Jerusalem is under threat," the patriarch wrote in the article, published a day after the Greek Orthodox celebration of Christmas.

"Our churches are threatened by Israeli radical fringe groups. At the hands of these Zionist extremists the Christian community in Jerusalem is suffering greatly, he said.

"Our brothers and sisters are the victims of hate crimes. Our churches are regularly desecrated and vandalised. Our clergy are subject to frequent intimidation."

By singling out extremists as Israeli, Theophilos's criticism was more personal and trenchant than that of a collective statement issued by the heads of other churches in Jerusalem before Christmas.

Their statement spoke of "frequent and sustained attacks by fringe radical groups" but stopped short of identifying them as Israeli.

A U.S. State Department report published last year on religious freedom around the world said Christian clergy and pilgrims continued to report instances of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem harassing or spitting on them.

Church groups have for some time reported attacks of vandalism at religious sites in the city. Theophilos did not accuse any radical groups by name or cite specific incidents. He did not provide evidence that they were Israeli, or that their goal was to drive Christians from the city.
On Sunday, an Israeli official said the reality on the ground for Christians was completely different from that described by the patriarch, citing a Foreign Ministry statement on Dec 22 that rebutted the earlier church leaders' claims.

"Since the day it was established, the State of Israel has been committed to freedom of religion and worship for all religions, as well to ensuring the freedom of access to holy sites," the ministry statement said.

"The statement by Church leaders in Jerusalem is particularly infuriating given their silence on the plight of many Christian communities in the Middle East suffering from discrimination and persecution."

In his column, Theophilos said the radicals that he criticised "are not representative of the state of Israel or the Jewish people," and called on Jerusalem to remain a diverse "mosaic community" of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Abubakar Mohammed Buba, for allegedly contracting his friend, Aliyu Mohammed for N110,000 to kill his father, Alhaji Mohammed Buba, in order to inherit the father’s estate.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said in a statement that the suspect was arrested in Chanchaga area of Minna on December 29, 2021 by the Chanchaga division.

“The suspect was arrested for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide of his father, Alhaji Mohammed Buba aged 52 years. The deceased was allegedly attacked and stabbed to death in his residence at Korokpan, Paikoro LGA on October 13, 2021,” he said in the statement.

According to Abiodun, during interrogation, the suspect confessed to having conspired with his friend, presently at large and killed the deceased.

The police spokesman said the suspect led police operatives to Tagwai-Dam where the body of the deceased was dumped after being severed and packed in a sack.

“He confessed further to have contracted the said Mohammed for a sum of N110,000 out of which he paid a deposit of N50,000 and later paid the balance of N60,000 after selling some of the properties of the deceased’s to raise the balance.

“He claimed that he committed the act in order to quickly inherit the father’s properties.

“Effort is ongoing to arrest the fleeing Aliyu Mohammed while the case is under investigation at the SCID Minna. The suspect will be arraigned in court after investigation.”

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo has lambasted northern leaders, politicians and other Nigerians supporting killer Fulani herdsmen, calling them criminals.

“They always use guns to scare people away here and then brought their cows to graze on people’s farm and drink water,” Mr Olabode added.

Also, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) coordinator in the area, Folorunso Olofe, disclosed that the gunmen attacked the community with AK-47.

“This has been happening for long. They are always coming with AK-47. They were more than 50. One Amotekun officer was hit with a bullet during the attack. They came and killed the Baale. Police came and evacuated the dead, and not up to 15 minutes, they came back and razed this place,” he said.

Villagers said the gunmen attacked the community following the refusal of the residents to allow the herdsmen to graze on their farms.

The hypocrites -they are the ungodly. God has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the unbelievers, the fire of Gehenna, therein to dwell forever. That is enough for them; God has cursed them; and there awaits them a lasting chastisement” (Sura al-Tawba 9:67-68); “Hast thou not regarded those who have taken for friends a people against whom God is wrathful? They belong neither to you nor to them; and they swear upon falsehood, and that wittingly. God has made ready for them a chastisement terrible; surely they – evil are the things they have been doing. They have taken their oaths as a covering, and barred from God’s way; so there awaits them a humbling chastisement” (Sura al-Mujadila 58:14-16).

Al-Baidawi said, “They have taken their oaths, which they made known, as covering, that is as your action against [the shedding of] your blood and [the forfeiting of] their possessions.”

Allow It: “The Jews say, ‘Ezra is the Son of’; the Christians say, ‘The Messiah is the Son of God.’ That is the utterance of their mouths, conforming with the unbelievers before them. God assail them! How they are perverted!” (Sura al-Tawba 9:30); “So the last remnant of the people who did evil was cut off. Praise belongs to God the Lord of all Being” (Sura al-An’am 6:45); “O believers, shall I direct you to a commerce that shall deliver you from a painful chastisement? You shall believe in God and His Messenger, and struggle in the way of God with your possessions and yourselves. That is better for you, did you but know. An estimated 200 people were killed and 10,000 displaced in attacks by armed bandits in the northwestern Nigerian state of Zamfara following military air raids on their hideouts last week.

A spokesperson for Sadiya Umar Farouq, minister of humanitarian affairs, said more than 200 bodies were buried.

“We are very saddened by this incessant invasion … and we also worried about the displaced persons who are fleeing in their hundreds from their communities,” Nneka Ikem Anibeze said on Sunday.

Farouq called the past week’s attacks in Zamfara state “horrific and tragic,” giving the first official toll after details began filtering out early Saturday.

The minister said more 10,000 people were displaced when “their homes were razed by the bandits while scores are still missing”.

The state government had previously said 58 people were killed in the attacks.

Locals returned to their villages on Saturday to organise mass burials.

The military conducted air attacks on Monday on targets in the Gusami forest and west Tsamre village in Zamfara, killing more than 100 bandits including two of their leaders.

More than 300 gunmen on motorcycles stormed eight villages in the Anka local area in Zamfara on Tuesday and started shooting sporadically, killing at least 30 people.

Attackers also rampaged through 10 villages in Anka and Bukkuyum districts on Wednesday through Thursday, firing at residents and looting and burning homes.

Babandi Hamidu, a resident of Kurfa Danya village, said the assailants were shooting “anyone on sight”.

“The search for more bodies is ongoing because many people are unaccounted for,” Hamidu told AFP news agency.

President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement on Saturday the military acquired more equipment to track down and eliminate criminal gangs, which have been subjecting people to a reign of terror, including through the illegal imposition of taxes on communities under siege.

“The latest attacks on innocent people by the bandits is an act of desperation by mass murderers, now under relentless pressure from our military forces,” Buhari said.


Buhari added the government will not relent in its military operations to get rid of the armed gangs.

Northwest Nigeria has seen a sharp rise in mass abductions and other violent crimes since late 2020 as the government struggles to maintain law and order.

Last year, bandits made international headlines with a series of high-profile attacks on schools and colleges where they kidnapped hundreds of pupils. Most were released but some of those students are still being held.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris, reporting from Abuja, said “kidnapping is the fastest growing enterprise in Nigeria,” especially in the largely ungoverned territories in the northwestern part of the country.

Idris said bodies were still being recovered in Zamfara and some appeared to have been mutilated or burned.

“The conflict is becoming more and more deadly as the security forces are struggling to deal with the problem,” Idris said, adding resources are stretched thin as the military is responding to crisis in 34 out of Nigeria’s 36 states.

Bandit violence has its roots in clashes between nomadic cattle herders and sedentary farmers over land and resources. But tit-for-tat attacks have over the years spiralled into broader criminality.

Nigeria’s armed forces said last week they killed 537 “armed bandits and other criminal elements” in the region and arrested 374 others since May last year, while 452 “kidnapped civilians were rescued”.

Bandits loyal to notorious gang leader Bello Turji suffered heavy losses last month in ground-and-air raids on their forest-based camps.

Security analyst Kabir Adamu, with Abuja-based Beacon Consulting Nigeria, told AFP last week’s raids could be in response to military operations.

“Angered by this, and perhaps by the fact that that they were facing certain death, [they] decided to move to other locations and in the course of this they seem to be conducting these attacks,” Adamu said.

Nigeria designated bandits as “terrorist” groups, allowing for tougher sanctions under the “terrorism” prevention act for suspected shooters, their informants, and supporters such as those caught supplying them with fuel and food.

Separately, gunmen on Sunday released 30 Nigerian students who spent nearly seven months in captivity.

The students of Federal Government College in Kebbi, northwest Nigeria, were abducted on June 17 when gunmen stormed their school in Birnin-Yauri.
