OWERRI-Imo State Government, yesterday, vowed to prosecute any parent or guardian who prevents any child of school age from going to school.

Governor Rochas Okorocha read the riot act when he laid the foundation stone of the College of Advanced Technological Studies in Owerri.

He said: "This government will support the free education programme. It is now a punishable offence for anybody to deny education to any child of school age in the state."

While lamenting that science education had gone down in the country, the governor wondered why most children are running away from science subjects.

Okorocha said: "One of the major decisions this administration has taken about this school is that instead of their paying school fees, government will be paying the students a monthly stipend.".

The governor, who promised to establish similar schools in Orlu and Okigwe senatorial zones, announced automatic scholarship for a student of Government Technical College, Owerri, Master Marvis Onyeazolam, who produced a prototype helicopter.

Earlier, Commissioner for Education, Professor (Mrs.) Victoria Obasi, said the greatest gift a child can receive is education, which government has placed at the door steps of every child in the state.

She said: "There is need to recruit qualified teachers to staff the school. The category of teachers is scarce in the system. There is also the need to make the conditions of service for prospective teachers attractive."

OSAZE Odem-wingie's big-club dream move is set to materialise as Arsenal yesterday announced it was ready to meet the £8m asking price of West Brom for the Nigerian international.

A Nigerian, Anne Imafidon, 20, has joined the league of youngest students to receive a Combined Masters Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the prestigious Oxford University, London.

The Europe correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reported that Imafidon, an indigene of Edo state, bagged the Degree from Keble College.

"Education is such an important part of young people's lives and I want to get the message out there to the youth that learning is such a vital element in their growth.

"I also want them to understand that mathematics is essentially a game of numbers," Imafidon said in an interview with NAN in London

Also speaking to NAN, Mr. Chris Imafidon, Anne's father said, he was proud of his daughter adding, "every child can achieve a similar feat if given the enabling tools and environment."

NAN reported that Anne is the sibling of the twins, Peter and Paula Imafidon, who set a new world record in Mathematics and Schools admission examination in the UK in 2009.

Dubbed the 'Wonder Twins', the Imafidons broke records when they passed A/AS-level mathematics papers at the age of seven.

A middle-aged man, Nasiru Ishaku, was, on Tuesday, sentenced to a six-month jail by a Bauchi chief magistrates' court, for having sexual intercourse with a she-goat.

Ishaku, who resides at Nassarawa quarters of Bauchi metroplis, was charged before chief magistrate, Isa Mohammed, by the police, for committing unnatural offence and mischief, by maiming an animal, which the police prosecutor, Abdul Ishaku, said was contrary to sections 284 and 330 of the Penal Code Laws.


The she-goat, according to the police prosecutor, belonged to one Mallam Bala of Federal Low Cost Housing Estate, Bauchi, adding that the animal, valued at N20,000, was rendered useless after the sexual act.


When the charges were read to the accused, the presiding judge asked him if he understood them, to which he answered in the affirmative.


He confessed that he truly committed the offence and pleaded with the court to have mercy on him.


Delivering his judgment, the magistrate ordered the accused to pay the owner of the goat the sum of N20,000, being the cost of the animal and, thereby, sentenced him to six months in prison, with an option of fine of N5,000.

Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped a Port Harcourt-based oil magnate and are demanding N100 million ransom before they will free him.

He is an ardent believer in the local content policy of the Federal Government in the oil and gas industry and has never relented in the development of the Nigerian manpower in the industry. He is one of the founding members of the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN).

Many Rivers State indigenes have benefitted immensely from his company in form of employment and scholarships.

ADO-EKITI — A member of the United States of America National Cancer Advisory Board, Professor Funmi Olopade has expressed the desire of the American government to assist Ekiti State in the area of research on breast cancer

Olapade disclosed this in Ado Ekiti, Tuesday, while inspecting facilities at the University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti in company of the State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The professor who is equally an indigene of the state was recently appointed into the US National Cancer Advisory Board by President Barack Obama

Her words,’’ the government of USA was really interested in doing discovery and sponsoring researches” adding that her scope included “understanding the problems that people have in the

healthcare system and trying to develop solution to these complex problems”.

In his remark,Dr Fayemi congratulated Prof. Olopade for what he described as a well deserved appointment.

They say she survived the evictions of the Miss Nigeria Reality show, and participated at the grand finale which took place September 25, 2010 at ThisDay Dome, Abuja.
