MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A radical Muslim sect blamed for attacks across northeast Nigeria bombed a police station and robbed two banks Thursday, killing 12 people in an assault highlighting the group's escalating willingness to shed blood, authorities said.
The sect, known locally as Boko Haram, stormed into the city of Gobi in Adamawa state in broad daylight, first attacking the police precinct with bombs and raking the building with gunfire, police commissioner A.T. Shinaba said. The group killed four police officers and a soldier guarding the area, he said.
The sect members then shot their way into two local branches of First Bank PLC and United Bank for Africa PLC, killing seven bank employees before speeding away with an unknown amount of cash, Shinaba said. Four others suffered injuries in the attack.
"Our police station was attacked this morning by a gang of suspected Boko Haram gunmen in vehicles and motorbikes," the shaken police commissioner told journalists. We are "combing the bush for fleeing sect members."
Nigeria, home to 150 million people, suffers from a weak police force more focused on collecting bribes than law enforcement in the oil-rich nation. The force also has been unable to handle the rise of Boko Haram, which many believed had been dismantled after a security crackdown following a sect riot in 2009 left 700 people dead.
The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, seeks the implementation of strict Shariah Islamic law in the country. Nigeria is largely split between a Christian south and Muslim north, where 12 states already have a version of Shariah in place.
Boko Haram has been blamed for a rash of killings targeting security officers, local leaders and clerics in the area over the last year. It also has claimed responsibility for a bombing at the nation's police headquarters that killed two people in June.
This would be the first bank robbery attributed to the group, though sophisticated attacks on banks have been carried on banks in north Nigeria in recent weeks.

The development has thrown Lagos State into almost complete darkness as electricity supply to the state, which hovers around 700 megawatts under normal situation, dropped drastically last night, while Abeokuta was also adversely affected. - Thisday

A 24-year-old Mechanical Engineering graduate, Mr. Tayo Adegbola, was on Wednesday paraded in Akure along with seven others by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly snatching “state-of-the-art vehicles” in Akure.


The Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Sani Mogaji told journalists that Adegbola usually hire the vehicles from car hire service operators and then call on his gang members to snatch them.


The other members of the gang are Vincent Agu, Monday Akam, Uche Nwainyinya, Silas Obiesie, Azuka Onyenweni, Izunna Ukwesi and Amaechi Chiekwe.


Vehicles recovered from them included three Honda Accord, an Audi A6, Honda CRV and a Nissan Primera.


While some have registration numbers others do not.


Mogaji said following a tip off, he placed policemen on the Red Alert until August 11 when Adegbola and his gang members were arrested.


Adegbola confirmed to journalists that he was the head of the gang and that he usually hire a vehicle for between N40, 000 and N50,000 from either Lagos or Ibadan “for official assignments.”

The death of a young lady, Chinelo Ezenekwe, from Nanka, in Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, whose body was found dead in a pond has continued to raise dust.

The corpse was allegedly found in a pond located at ‘Obu’ palace.

But the Igwe of Nanka, Gilbert Ofosa, who was shocked at the discovery in his obu, has ordered investigation into the sudden death of the factory worker.

This is even when Prince Isaac Ezenekwe is saying that her first daughter was murdered in cold blood and her body dumped in the pond, to deceive people to believe that she committed suicide or slipped and fell into it.

A family source, who identified himself as Prince, alleged that Chinelo was raped before she was murdered, adding that she might have died during the encounter. He disclosed that after noticing that the girl had died, the suspected killers dumped her body in the pond.”

He said: “My sister has no reason to commit suicide. She was working in a pure water factory. She knew the road to her office very well and would not have missed her way and slipped into the pond

Try and recall what happened when she tried to call a PDP elders meeting in Anambra. Also recall how she was defeated by Ngige even with all the rigging machinery deployed by the state in her support.

Do the two events make her less powerful?. And who told you that Ngige had no rigging machinery?. Dora has been a pariah from day 1. So many grudges are still in stock for her because she was brave enough to call Aondokaa and his machinery out to declare Nigeria a state with no president. All the so so called PDP elders were there, some were in the meeting yet they kept quiet. The French government is to impose an extra tax of 3% on annual income above 500,000 euros (£440,000; $721,000).

It is part of a package of measures to try to cut the country's deficit by 12bn euros over two years.

The tax increase came after some of France's wealthiest people had called on the government to tackle its deficit by raising taxes on the rich.

Paris has also reduced its economic growth forecast for 2012 to 1.75% from a previous 2.25%.

'Rigorous'
And it has cut its 2011 growth forecast from 2% to 1.75%, Prime Minister Francois Fillon has said.

He said the new tax would remain in place until France reduces its budget deficit back under the EU's intended limit of 3% of GDP, which should occur in 2013.

France plans to trim its public deficit to 5.7 % this year, 4.6 % next year and 3% in 2013.

"This is a rigorous policy that will allow France to remain relaxed," Mr Fillon said. "Our country must stick to its [deficit] commitments. It's in the interest of all French people."
