In its resolved to rid the state of criminal elements, the Ogun State Police Command has begun raid of all criminal hideouts within the state.

In one of the raids carried out in Ifo area of the state, a handset discovered to belong to a top clearing and forwarding agent who was killed by a robbery gang six months ago in Ifo, was found on a suspected female member of the robbery gang.

Crime Alert gathered that the raid was carried out at about 9pm by policemen attached to Ifo Division last Monday. The cops' attention, as gathered, was drawn to some cars that were parked in a single line on the road at Ilepa bus-stop.

Suspecting occupants of the vehicles, the policemen, led by the Divisional Crime Officer(DCO), Akinade Johnson, a Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), reportedly alighted to check the vehicles, only for the occupants numbering six to immediately take to their heels on sighting them. But one of them, a female later identified as Kudirat Adebayo, was arrested.


When the abandoned cars, a Mazda 323 Saloon car with plate number FL 640 LSR, a Nissan Primera car with plate number GK 472 ABJ and a Honda Civic with plate number AG 738 BDU were searched, the Ogun State Police Commissioner, Mr Musa Daura, revealed that two A.K 47 rifles with seven fully loaded Magazines and the sum of N7000 were found in one of the vehicles, reportedly occupied by the arrested woman.

Explaining, the command boss said, "A Nokia phone was also found with the arrested female suspect. When the phone was scrolled by detectives at the State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, some text messages which gave rise to suspicion were found.

Kudirat Adebayo had removed the original sim card and replaced it with hers. But she was not clever enough as she forgot to delete the messages that were sent to the real owner which were saved on the phone. When the number of the sender who is based in the Eastern part of the country was called, he revealed that the owner of the phone, a clearing agent at the Apapa sea ports was killed a couple of months ago by an armed robbery gang in Ifo."

But Kudirat claimed the phone was given to her by a friend in Ikorodu area of Lagos State. It was gathered that when detectives insisted she took them to Amina's place, the supposed person that gave her the phone, she reportedly declined, saying she did not know the exact place, thereby convincing detectives that she was a suspected member of the robbery gang, who after snuffing life out of their victim, made away with his phone.

In this interview , 27-year-old Kudirat , a widow and mother of one, explained all she claimed to know about the recovered handset.

Hear her: "I was returning home from where I had gone to plait my hair , when I came across Mulikat, at Vespa bus-stop Ifo, who told me her husband, Biliaminu Akintunde was arrested and detained at Ifo Police Station, that she wanted someone to follow her to the station and I obliged.

When we finished at the station, I told her I wanted to go to Sango to buy petrol for my power generating set at Onihale, in Ifo.

But on my way back home, when we got to Ilepa bus stop, I sighted three vehicles parked by the roadside. To our surprise, two of the occupants came out of the vehicles and stopped the vehicle I was in.

As our driver was trying to park as he was ordered, some policemen in a patrol van came from nowhere and blocked us. The next thing I heard from the estranged men was "awon Baba mbo" ( meaning the fathers are coming) and they took to their heels.

Since I had no skeleton in my cupboard, I did not move an inch but stayed back because I did not want any stray bullet to hit me should there be any cross fire. It was when the detectives searched the vehicles and recovered the weapons that they came and took me to their station. I do not know any of the fleeing suspects nor the recovered weapons", absolved the Gambari, Kwara State-born suspect.

On the slain robbery victim's handset found on her, Kudirat, a hairdresser, offered, " It was given to me by my friend Amina, who used to visit me at Onihale, Ifo, when my two phones had screen problem. But I do not know where she stays in Ikorodu.

All I know is that she told me she lives in Ikorodu town and I had never paid her a visit. It is not as if I don't want to take the detectives to her house but I honestly do not know where she stays in Ikorodu."

He is a prominent chief from a royal family in Kula, a Kalabari community in Rivers State; a Niger Delta activist; politician as well as maritime and security expert. With a security training background, the former state security adviser in Rivers State during the Dr Peter Odili administration has been involved in security affairs virtually all his life.

With hindsight, he warns that the current security concerns in Nigeria should not be treated with kid gloves as they have the potential of destabilizing the country. To get to the roots of the matter, the dragnet, he asserts, must spread in the direction of those with military background and orientation, without whose support terrorist activities cannot succeed.

Said Sara-Igbe:

“Most terrorist acts across the world are politically-motivated and their success depends largely on the cooperation and support from security agents and persons in high places, who are supposed to protect or advice on the targets of the terrorist…Terrorist operations cannot be fully successful without the support of a sponsor country or a retired or serving General or its equivalent in the military of the sponsor country or the targeted country

How would you describe the situation in Nigeria in the light of the October 1 bomb blast in Abuja, the Boko Haram insurgency in the North as well as the recent large cache of arms seized at the Lagos port?

Straight away, I can tell you that some persons are trying to undermine the power of the President. These persons had earlier warned that should he decide to contest the 2011 presidential election, they will make the entire country ungovernable. To my mind, what they are trying to do is to intimidate Mr President and Nigerians by introducing what we call political terrorism. Is it not curious that the Abuja blasts occurred two weeks after his public declaration to contest the election?

Thereafter there was renewed Boko Haram insurgency in the North and now the recent interception of the large cache of arms at the Apapa Port. The whole idea is to put fear in the mind of the President and also to create the impression that he is incapable of running the government. My worry is that the security agencies are not helping matters as intelligence gathering, policing and monitoring of security of the country is below the normal watch of an eagle eye. In a normal situation, they would have been able to arrest it before the damage is done.

I suspect there is an impediment to free flow of intelligence report among the various security agencies or there was lack of intelligence sharing among them. Otherwise they should have nipped the Independence Day bomb blast when there was intelligence report five days to the celebration. It was an opportunity for the various security agencies to showcase their strength and preparedness. I am of the view that there is need for the government to overhaul the security system in the country. It should also train and retrain them in modern digital security networking, policing, surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Are these indications that Nigeria is now a terrorist state or terrorism hub?

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror with the intention of causing death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non-combatants or the purpose of inducing fear and intimidating the population or compelling government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act. The bombing of Abuja on October 1, the interception of a cache of arms at the Apapa Port and the Boko Haram insurgency is political terrorism designed primarily to generate fear in the country or substantial segment for a political purpose. Government should take steps to ensure that those behind the acts are thoroughly investigated and punished in accordance with global laws on terrorism, no matter how lowly or highly placed the persons may be.

Government should also look into all the options, including the various threats to make the country ungovernable should Dr Goodluck Jonathan decide to contest the 2011 presidential election by some politicians from a section of the country as well as the comments made by the same politicians after the bomb blast, with the view to ascertaining their involvement and intentions against the government and people of Nigeria.

The hit man of Abia kidnap kingpin, Obioma Nwankwo a.k.a. Osisikankwu and 448 other suspects have been arrested. Osisikankwu had, in an interview he allegedly granted a national daily (not Daily Sun) last week, claimed that none of his 3,000 members had been located and arrested, saying those arrested by soldiers were innocent persons.

But dismissing the claim with wave of the hand while addressing a group of select journalists in his office at the army camp at Asa High School in Ukwa West Local Government, Maj. Gen. Sarkin Yaki Bello said the army had been meticulous in its operations in Abia, adding that no innocent citizen had been made to suffer the crime of the hoodlums.

He said one of the hit men of Osisikankwu had been arrested and that very soon, the kingpin himself would be apprehended. Bello said the army does not believe in Osisikankwu and his antics, adding that the soldiers were drafted to Aba to restore peace to the city and not to join issues with criminals.

Earlier, while taking newsmen round the camp to inspect some recovered vehicles, the Assistant Director, Public Relations of 82 Division, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said since the army began operations in Abia on September 28, a total number of 449 suspected kidnappers had been arrested from different locations in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Imo and Rivers states. He stated that out of the suspects, 79 were transferred to State Security Services (SSS), Abia State command for further investigation and possible prosecution. He also said after investigations, 171 of the suspects, who were not found culpable, were released.

Musa further said presently, 183 suspects were in detention, and after thorough investigation those found not liable would be released while the rest would be transferred to SSS for further action. Two men in possession of 11 bags of Indian hemp who were also arrested by soldiers were handed over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Armed robbers yesterday morning stormed The Radiant Parish of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Obanikoro, Lagos - carting away cash, mobile phones and other valuables worth millions of naira from the congregation.

The robbers, who came in three motor bikes at exactly 10.00am when the church was singing praise and worship songs, asked the congregation to lie down after which they collected their wedding rings, cash, mobile phones, wrist watches and neck laces.

Cladin suits, the robbers, who had initially positioned themselves in front of the church, struck when a member of the congregation was about entering the church. One of them accompanied the woman into the church and told the worshippers to lie down.

Two of the muggers were permanently stationed outside the church to ward off intruders, while the other three joined the one inside the church, entered the pastor's office and the worker's strong room where the day's takings were snatched.

Thereafter, they went upstairs to raid the children and youths auditorium.

At the end of the operation, which lasted about 15 minutes no life was lost because the worshippers cooperated with the muggers, who were armed with guns.

A 20-year-old lady, Bose Adeniji, has been remanded in prison custody by an Osogbo Magistrate's court over an allegation that she pierced the chest of a 22-year-old man, Olalekan Okunola, with a pair of scissors, leading to his death.

Appearing in court before a magistrate, Mr. Olawumi Makanjuola, the suspect pleaded 'not guilty' when the charge was read to her in court.

Adeniji was alleged to have forcefully thrown a pair of scissors at Okunola, which pierced the deceased's chest and led to his death.

According to the charge sheet obtained on Friday, the incident occurred on November 3, 2010, at Popo Street, Ikire, Osun State, at about 4pm.

The charge sheet said the alleged offence was contrary to Section 316 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34; Volume II, Laws of Osun State.

Adeniji's plea was not taken because magistrate's court lacks jurisdiction to entertain murder cases.

Police prosecutor, Insp. Oladoye Joshua, represented the Commissioner of Police.

Makanjuola, in his ruling, ordered that the suspect be remanded at Ilesa prison and adjourned the case to November 23, 2010.

Both countries will also be reviewing and making projections for collaboration on pressing international issues that affect their regions as well as a strategic partnership that can take the current economic cooperation between Russia and Nigeria to a higher level.


Also, the government and people of foreign missions accredited to Nigeria have nothing to fear as all efforts are being made to address the security challenges that the country currently faces, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Odein Ajumogobia (SAN).

The minister said that all the country's nationals were safe while their business interests remained under the protection of the highest authority in the land.


He said that the country's stability was being enhanced by the security, structural and economic reforms now being embarked upon by President Goodluck Jonathan.


Ajumogobia spoke in Abuja while briefing the members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Nigeria.


Nigerian and Russian relations are to be boosted as the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov comes to Nigeria tomorrow for a three-day engagement.


Russia and Nigeria are marking the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on the 25th of this month. Briefing foreign affairs correspondents in Abuja at the weekend on the mission of his foreign minister to Nigeria, the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Alexander Polyakov said both sides were meeting to give a "new political impetus" to the process initiated way back in June 2009 when Dmitry Anatolyevich Madvedev visited Nigeria.


He was the first leader of the Russian federation to visit the country. Apart from meeting with his Nigerian counterpart Ajumogobia and a host of other top Nigerian officials in the energy, health, military and engineering sectors, the Russian delegation is also billed to have an audience with President Jonathan today.


Shedding light on the delegation's mission, Polyakov said: "There are two big issues - the bilateral cooperation and the pressing international situation. It is to advance our strategic relationship but the crucial point is economic co-operation in the field of energy including oil and gas, pipeline and power generation. We are also looking at agricultural co-operation.

There is a huge Russian agricultural machine building being started. There have been exchanges in this regard and your minister of agriculture is to visit Russia before the end of this month."


He also spoke on nuclear cooperation: "On nuclear co-operation, it is for peaceful use. Peaceful use of nuclear technology. This will involve the training of Nigerian specialists in this regard. It is about technological transfer. So here, we will have a Russian experimental reactor. That means a possibility supplying assistance or a joint development project."


Fielding questions on the sensitively of the West to the acquisition of nuclear technology, he said: "Yes, the whole global community has concerns about the Iranian programme. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has an eye on that. One year ago, the international framework agreement was signed with Nigeria. It is yet to be ratified by the Nigerian National Assembly. But we are working with your National Commission of Atomic Agency so an experimental nuclear plant is being built around Abuja. Now, such a research centre is very useful for any country that wants to develop peaceful purpose nuclear capability.

It is the right of nations to do this and no one can begrudge any country of trying to boost its energy level and to have more stable electricity."


As part of the Russian international cooperation now opening up, Polyakov said: "On the global international agenda, there is a possibility of rendering Russian technical assistance for beefing up peacekeeping operations.


"Nigeria is a leading regional power that has made good contributions to peacekeeping effort. Russia wants to support these efforts, Nigeria and Russia have no political clashes. Nigeria supports all the Russian draft in the UN resolutions and we have a general cooperation on the UN agenda. From the days of the civil war when Russia supported your government, we supported statehood and integration. In continuation of our assistance, we have educational training and scholarship. This year, 65 Nigerians will obtain scholarship. There should be fruitful negotiations in tune with the minister's worldwide tours, "


Remarking that no country had conquered or could overcome all its security challenges, the minister said a holistic approach to all the criminal dimensions ranging from sabotage, kidnapping to violent flare-ups were being tackled by the Nigerian government without making the strategy visible.


He said: "Our government is not focusing on the security in the Niger Delta alone. We are also dealing with the sporadic outbreak of violence and criminal impunity in other parts of the country. Government is resolutely committed to addressing the root cause of the socio-economic challenges that have occasionally boiled over into social conflagrations that often have ethno-religious dimensions and the consequent security challenges. But with the

current measures being taken, Nigeria is secure."


The minister declared further: "At the root of these problems is poverty and the perceptions of neglect. These are enormous challenges by themselves as evidenced by global concerns recently expressed at the United Nations over the prospects of developing countries meeting the MDG (Millennium Development Goals) targets by 2015, but I believe that government's efforts so far are commendable, so the broader security strategy is to address the challenges of underdevelopment as a way of tackling some of the drivers of insecurity in our country,

The government of South Africa is expecting about 100,000 Nigerians to visit the former apartheid country in two to three years, the Regional Director for Africa, South African Tourism, Mr. Punmi Dholo, has said.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, Dholo said that since the South Africa 2010 World Cup had come and gone, the country "has decided to open its doors to world tourists to explore and exploit the potential the country has acquired over time".

He said 45,270 Nigerians visited the country in 2009, adding that there was an increase of 10.5 per cent on the figure between January and July 2010.

"We are committed to many ways on tourism and in the next two to three years, we will see how 100,000 Nigerians can visit South Africa," he said.

Dholo, while thanking the Nigerian press for the positive coverage of the world cup, said South Africa tourism had continued to maintain the partnership it entered with Nigeria in 2000.

"Nigeria has always remained our largest market; since 2004, Nigerians' visit to the country has continued to increase. This is because South Africa's activities have always been receiving positive media coverage," he noted.

To therefore strengthen the industry, the regional head said the country had inaugurated various tourism programmes, especially a website that would introduce the country to visitors.

The Ambassador, South African High Commission, Mr. JKN Mamabolo, said, "We are here today to reflect on what has been happening to our country and to also celebrate with the rest of African countries for the successful staging of the first world cup on African soil. During the world cup, we achieve a lot. For the positive coverage, we thank Nigerians," he said.

He noted that the intention of his country in the recent mundial was not only to entertain, but also to stage a successful and best world cup.

The Head of Africa, South African Airways, Mr. Aaron Munetsi, said that the country's carrier intensified efforts during the mundial to fly all African representatives to the fiesta and back to their destinations.

He noted that the aviation sector would continue to increase its aircraft capacity to promote the country's tourism.

He announced that a new plane would be introduced to Nigeria later in November.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has approved the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure and the Consolidated Health Workers Salary Structure for Medical and Health workers in the state.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr. Mojeed Jamiu, said the development came through a circular letter with reference number SMIR/CON.9T 111/10, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishment and Training, Office of the Governor, Mr. Kunle Abegunde.

It added that the salary regime would take effect from October 1, 2010.

According to the circular, the newly approved package for the Medical and Health Workers in Ondo State was adopted for workers in all government health institutions in the state while the new package would also be applicable workers at the University Teaching Hospital with due cognisance to the institution's autonomy as an extension of the University of Ado Ekiti.

The agitation for the payment of the CONMESS/CONHESS by the Ekiti State Health workers dated back to January, 2010 when the Federal Government approved the salary structure and culminated in a 9-week industrial action by doctors in the University of Ado Ekiti Teaching Hospital from July 25

ABAKALIKI-No fewer than 173,000 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members in Ebonyi State yesterday defected to Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in their pursuit for better representation in the next general election.

The leader of the group and pioneer member of PDP in the State, Dr. Sunday Adol-Awam ,stated that Action Congress of Nigeria was a better platform that would guarantee self-actualization for the people of the state, adding that the reason for their mass decampment was inherent in the fact that ACN had a good ideological policy and sustained determination to offer Nigerians good governance through responsible leadership and provision of basic amenities.

He said: " My group and I have chosen Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, as the platform that could guarantee self-actualization for our people.

"We believe in the policy of one man, one vote, because Ebonyi people must determine who govern them. ACN is the only option left for Ebonyi people to enjoy the wind of progressive governance.

"Because Nigerians are sick and tired of PDP, ACN presents the best alternative platform with clearly defined strategies for the socio-economic development of Nigeria. Ebonyi cannot be left out of this mass movement.”

"We refuse to be confined to poverty, marginalization, and oppression by big men without good conscience or feeling for the suffering masses."

Dr. Adolawam, who pointed out that the 2011 general election was going to be an eye opener in Ebonyi State as his new party will produce the next governor of the state, noted that ACN was ready to welcome intending members and true democrats who want the best for Ebonyi State.

"ACN will produce the next governor in 2011; we are prepared to make things happen so that our people can breathe in some fresh air of good governance and regain their voice against the oppressive and punitive regime now pulling the state back.

"We shall sweep the oppressive PDP government away from Government House, Abakaliki and elect patriotic legislators to speak for Ebonyi people without fear or favour

"We shall welcome every genuine democrat who wants the best for Ebonyi State. We assure intending members to the party that we shall not discriminate or exclude anybody. Our watch word remains internal democracy in the way party affairs are run," he emphasized.

The Oyo State police command has commenced an investigation into the shooting of an unidentified middle-aged drummer during the inauguration of the new Commissioner for Education, in Oyo State, Mr Oladiti Solomon, at Governor's Office, Agodi, on Wednesday.

There was a loud bang outside the hall, where Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, was inaugurating Solomon, who replaced the former Commissioner of Education, Prof Taoheed Adedoja, following his (Adedoja's) appointment as a federal minister.

The crowd that had gathered inside the hall was oblivious of the cause of the loud bang as the ceremony went on smoothly.

It was gathered that the drummer was wounded when the gun went off and he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital just as blood smeared the scene of the incident.

Confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Mr Adisa Bolanta, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, on Wednesday, said the drummer had a gun in his pocket, which went off.

Bolanta said the circumstances surrounding the shooting would be unearthed by a detailed investigation.

He said, "The man kept the gun in his pocket and it exploded. Of course, we are investigating the case but details are still sketchy for now."

The latest incident again brings to the fore, the level of insecurity in the state capital and also underscored the high number of illegal arms and ammunition in the hands of untrained persons.
