Crime / Police Arrest Suspected Kidnappers In Ondo by AloyEmeka8: 3:10am On Dec 29, 2010 |
Tuesday, December 28, 2010 Police arrest suspected kidnappers in Ondo From Niyi Bello, Akure SUSPECTED members of a five-man gang who abducted Mrs. Juliana Ogunleye, 65-year old wife of a Saudi Arabia-based Akure Prince and Consultant Gynecologist, Dr. Idowu Ogunleye, and held the woman captive for 16 days have been arrested by the police. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/dec/28/1.html Sources within the Ondo Police Command said yesterday that the suspects, who were arrested in their hideout following a tip-off, included a lady and that they were undergoing interrogation at the police headquarters. It was gathered that after an in-depth investigation by a team of crack detectives, two of the suspects were arrested and their confessions led to the arrest of others. About three weeks ago, four gunmen invaded the Ogunleye's residence at Oluwatuyi Quarters, Akure while the old woman was playing with her grandchildren and whisked her away under the cover of darkness. When a communication channel was established with the kidnappers two days later, a ransom of N30 million was demanded but was later reduced to N5 million "on compassionate grounds." The Ondo State Command's Police Public Relations Officer, Adeniran Aremu, who confirmed the arrest, told The Guardian yesterday that "some of the kidnappers have been arrested and they are undergoing interrogation." He, however, declined further information, saying divulging such may jeopardise the course of investigations but assured the people of the state that the culprits would be brought to book and that those still at large would be smoked out. |
Crime / Kidnappers On The Prowl In Lagos by AloyEmeka8: 3:08am On Dec 29, 2010 |
Tuesday, December 28, 2010 Kidnappers on the prowl in Lagos Sesan Olufowobi It was like a scene from a gangster movie. A woman and her child, who was in a uniform of a private school, were standing in front of a house at Alakuko outskirts of Lagos State. Pupils of a primary school. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/dec/28/819.html Suddenly, two young men on a motorcycle, popularly called okada rode into the area and stopped in front of the woman. Before the woman could ask them what they wanted, the young man, who rode the okada slapped the woman, and before she could recover from the assault, the other passenger snatched the child from the woman and they zoomed off on the motorcycle. By the time the child was released, the family had cough up N500, 000 as ransom. In Iju area of the state, another primary school pupil slept in one of the rooms in his father's hotel. By the time the father was ready to go home, the child had disappeared. For about three weeks, the family ran from pillar to post to secure his release. Even after the ransom was paid, the kidnappers did not release the child until after a few days later. The two separate incidents are experiences of some parents in the past few weeks in Lagos. There are at least six of such incidents that PUNCH METRO discovered between November and December. Apart from the Alakuko incident where the kidnappers collected N500, 000 ransome, investigation by PUNCH METRO showed that the kidnappers sometimes accepted what a victim's family could offer as a ransom. The method being used by the kidnappers is to strike suddenly and the victims are usually pupils between age three and five. That was what happened in Itire area of the state where two pupils were kidnapped on the same day. PUNCH METRO gathered that on the day, one of the pupils was abducted on the street while returning from his school; while the second one was abducted from school by a man, who pretended to be the victim's relative. The same strategy was also used in Ikorodu area of the state. Two sets of Kidnappers visited the same school and concocted a story, which eventually made the school authorities to release two pupils to them. Although these victims are back with their families; our correspondent discovered that , apart from the Iju incident, none of the other families reported the incident to the police. The families also shunned enquiries from PUNCH METRO and those who talked to our correspondent insisted that their names, locations and identities of the victims should not be revealed. The mother of the child that was kidnapped in Alakuko said that the kidnappers specifically warned the family that the matter should not be reported to either the police or press. She added that the kidnappers warned that they would not release the child if the family ignored the warning. |

Foreign Affairs / 2010 Polls: Obama Most Admired Man by AloyEmeka8: 3:27am On Dec 28, 2010 |
2010 polls: Obama most admired man; Palin top religious newsmaker By Rachel Rose Hartman It was a tough year to be Barack Obama in many respects--but he's ending it on a strong note. Not only did the president rack up a number of key legislative wins in the lame-duck 111th Congress, but he also won the honor of being the man Americans admired most in 2010, according to a Gallup/USA Today poll released Monday. Twenty-two percent of Americans surveyed said that the president is the person they hold in highest esteem, granting Obama the titled of "Most Admired Man" for the third year in a row in the annual survey. George W. Bush placed second with 5 percent, and Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Bill Gates rounded out the top five, in that order. Hillary Clinton placed first in Gallup's survey of the woman Americans most admire. However, while Obama is holding steady in terms of mundane esteem, one of his best-known detractors made impressive inroads in another poll gauging popularity in a beyond this-worldly scale. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin--who also finished second in the "Most Admired Women" tally, ahead of another longtime rival, Oprah Winfrey--took top honors in an online poll Monday for her influence on the country's religious values. The former Alaska governor placed first in a USA Today online straw poll of the top religion newsmaker of 2010. Palin finished ahead of Pope Benedict and Imam Abdul Feisal Rauf, the man behind the proposed religious center with mosque proposed near Ground Zero. The men tied for second place. Politics / Global Witness: Uk Aiding Corruption In Nigeria by AloyEmeka8: 8:59pm On Dec 27, 2010 |
Global Witness: UK aiding corruption in Nigeria From Paul Obi in Abuja , 12.22.2010 Thursday, December 23, 2010 The British authorities are not doing enough to stop the flow of corrupt money into the United Kingdom (UK) from Nigeria, says Global Witness, an anti-corruption non-governmental organisation (NGO). http://odili.net/news/source/2010/dec/23/212.html In an exclusive interview with THISDAY in Abuja, Founder of the organisation Anthea Lawson and her colleague Robert Palmer expressed disgust at the way British and Western banks facilitate corruption in countries such as Nigeria. They indicated that it would appear on the surface that the UK is "clean". But their investigations suggest that the actual enforcement of rules and regulations on money laundering leave much to be desired. Lawson asked the David Cameroon government to rein in on banks that receive corrupt deposits. Her words: "We want to emphasize that British banks and regulators are not doing enough to tackle money laundering. There is need for a global effort to effectively enforce the laws which are designed to stop the flow of dirty money, whether it is in corruption, tax evasion or organised crime or even money for funding terrorism." Global Witness had in October this year published a damning report on how major British banks received stolen money from influential Nigerians. The ways through which former Governors of Bayelsa and Plateau States Dieprieye Alamieyeseigha and Joshua Dariye respectively laundered ill gotten wealth were uncovered. "Apart from the banks, the British government is supposed to be involved in strengthening laws, enforcing it so that we can stop this," stated Lawson. "The challenge to the David Cameron government is to push the regulator in the UK, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), to make a really serious effort to punish those banks who are taking corrupt funds. The reason banks think this is ok is because there has not been deterrence," she added. Although, efforts have been made to improve the British system, however, the reality is that day after day, there are new cases of stolen money flowing into the country, Palmer stated. He said due diligence should be a priority for financial institutions; sources of funds have to be verified; and if they are questionable, they should be reported to the authorities. Lawson recalled that some 23 banks that were reported by the FSA to have engaged in such practices were not publicly reprimanded. A few years later, the same banks were featured in the Global Witness report on corruption. She cited the example of the United States (US) where companies are fined heavily, if found to have breached the anti-money laundering laws. That aggressive approach also indicates the priority of the government there, she noted. "If you look at the US, the authority may have been willing to fine banks huge amounts, hundreds of millions of dollars, it is something which is a priority, so I think it is about the political will," she stated. Lawson went on to say that the NGO is is trying to change the perception that Western countries are clean. She explained that establishing the link between poverty in developing countries and the actions of institutions in the developed world is paramount. She explained that the UK gives away development grants to developing countries but turns around to undermine that effort by aiding corruption across borders. That is inconsistent, she emphasised. Part of the job of Global Witness, Lawson argued, is to make bankers in the UK see how their actions impoverish people in other parts of the world. In order to create a just and fair world, all countries must co-operate in the area of fighting money laundering, she said. When reminded that politicians would always find safe havens elsewhere, Palmer said the plan is to make it more difficult to launder money worldwide. "We hope that the space will get smaller and smaller," he said. While corruption may not be wiped out completely, excesses can be curbed, Lawson added. |
