Police arrest seven suspected religious fanatics

The police in Adamawa have arrested seven suspected religious fanatics in Mamukan village, Jada Local Government Area, for inciting some people to embark on religious disturbance.
The State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Altine Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Yola, that there was no arms found with the suspects at the time of the arrest.

Mr Altine said the suspects were arrested for the same offence in 2002 and charged to court but they were now trying to re-group after serving their jail term.
"We did not find any arm with them, we are still investigating the suspects because we don't want to be caught unaware in view of the recent happening in some parts of the country," Mr Altine said.

The PPRO also confirmed the arrest of one Abdullahi Iliyasu, a suspected fraudster with a carton containing fake N1, 000 notes.
The suspect, a resident of Wuro-Hausa ward of Yola, told NAN that he had been in the business of minting fake money for about 10 years.
He said he was planning to mint N400, 000 for a customer when the customer alerted the police.
"Honestly, I regretted joining this business as I cannot see any tangible benefit or gain from it since I have started it, " the suspect said.

PoliticsBenue State Governor, Suswam, In Certificate Forgery Scandal by AloyEmeka8(op): 4:25am On Nov 28, 2010
Benue State Governor, Suswam, in Certificate Forgery Scandal

The Benue governor and so-called zonal co-ordinator of Jonathan's campaign for the PDP ticket in the 2010 presidential election, Gabriel Suswam, is a man fighting on several fronts these days. Although the widely despised Suswam is in a fierce fight to retain the governorship of his state, his toughest battle today is the one concerning the very damning and credible allegations of certificate forgery that have been levelled against him.

Instead of doing the right thing by going to court to defend himself, the Benue governor has decided to play hide-and-seek.

The Benue people and the rest of the citizenry will not accept the governor's sense of impunity. Why is the president apparently not encouraging his sidekick to submit himself to the laws of the land?

Copies of Suswam's forged documents can be accessed at the following link:

Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, In Certificate Forgery Scandal
Posted: November 27, 2010 - 20:17

By SaharaReporters, New York

SaharaReporters is in possession of documents indicating that Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, may have forged the West Africa School Certificate with which he was purportedly admitted to the University of Lagos to study law.

The contentious certificate is also one of the supporting documents the governor submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission in the run-up to his election as governor in 2007.

Suswam, who is coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign in the North-central region, was supposedly admitted to UNILAG on the basis of a 1982 General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level certificate with candidate number: 07652151.

The original certificate portrayed him as having passed five subjects, the subjects passed were without Mathematics and English, which is a pre-requisite subject for admission into law programmes in Nigerian universities.

However, while the governor’s traducers were still wondering how he managed to sneak into the University of Lagos without appropriate entry requirements, Suswam wrote to WAEC in 2005, claiming that his certificate was missing. He attached photocopies of the purportedly missing certificate, a police extract and affidavit of loss of certificate to the letter.

Shortly afterwards, the governor claimed WAEC sent him a replacement for his lost certificate. The new certificate came with the same candidate number (07652151), with his passport photograph embossed on it.

However, the new certificate had significant changes indicating that Suswam passed "English and Mathematics", significantly raising the possibility that the new document is “a complete forgery” according to Suswan critics.

Already, Terver Kakih, a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue state, has asked a Federal High Court in Makurdi to order the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Crimes Commission (ICPC) to investigate the alleged forgery and other allegations of financial impropriety and embezzlement levelled against the governor in various petitions.

Joined in the suit, in which Kakih asked the West African Examination Council to withdraw and cancel the forged certificate, were the EFCC, the ICPC, INEC, the Benue State House of Assembly, the Benue state Attorney General, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

When the case came up for hearing last Thursday, Suswam and the other defendants failed to show up in court, neither did any counsels represent them. Justice Abimbola Ogie therefore ordered the parties to appear on the next adjourned date, December 3rd, 2010.

Not too long ago, one Chigozie Ukpabi squealed on Suswam, saying he helped the governor to falsify the results.

Jittery Over Atiku, Jonathan Threatens To Fight Dirty
Posted: November 27, 2010 - 04:04

By SaharaReporters, New York
A few hours after a committee composed of Northern politicians chose former Vice President Abubakar Atiku as its "consensus candidate," aides to Goodluck Jonathan accused the Nigerian media of misrepresentation in their description of Atiku as the Northern consensus candidate.

The statement, which was signed by presidential spokesman, Ima Niboro, argued that Atiku was a candidate of fringe elements in the North within the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF).

Shortly afterward, Jonathan's political machinery also reached out to the media claiming that they were excited by the selection of Atiku. They boasted that the president’s odd of winning the nomination of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had vastly improved with the Northern group’s endorsement of Atiku.

However, Saharareporters has learned that Mr. Jonathan and his handlers are deeply jittery over Mr. Atiku’s emergence as their main challenger.

“We made a big strategic miscalculation,” a senior adviser to Jonathan told Saharareporters. “Prior to Atiku's selection, we mostly concentrated our attacks on [former military dictator Ibrahim] Babangida, almost forgetting Atiku,” he added.

But several sources within and outside the Jonathan camp have disclosed that the president and his handlers now recognize that Atiku is a much harder opponent than Babangida.

After all the braggadocio the day Atiku emerged the candidate of the Northern wing, it dawned on Jonathan that celebrating Atiku's choice might have been a major mistake.

One source told us that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was one of the first to warn Jonathan that Atiku was the most dangerous of all the four Northern politicians who were formerly in the race – Babangida, former security chief Aliyu Gusau and Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara. The source said Obasanjo chastised Jonathan for letting Atiku receive a party membership waiver earlier in the race.

After Obasanjo and other advisers warned Jonathan about Atiku’s political resilience, wide contacts across the country and strong political skills, a visibly nervous president ordered his aides to arrange a meeting with the leaders of the Save Nigeria Group (SNG). The organization had organized nationwide rallies and led the struggle to help Jonathan emerge as President when former President Umaru Yar'adua was holed up in a Saudi hospital, incommunicado for three months.

Since assuming office, Jonathan had distanced himself from the SNG operatives.

Facing the prospect of a strong challenge from the Atiku camp, President Jonathan last Monday night received the SNG leadership in Aso Rock. The SNG members, led by fiery Lagos preacher, Pastor Tunde Bakare, were invited to see Jonathan in a meeting billed as a way of reviewing his performance so far in office.

But a source told Saharareporters that the SNG delegation found a downcast Jonathan who was solely interested in talking about his presidential ambition and how to achieve by all means.

A presidential source told us that Jonathan was visibly shaky when the SNG delegation insisted on discussing the president’s performance in office. They reportedly drew Jonathan’s attention to the lawlessness perpetrated in Ogun and Bauchi, two PDP-controlled states, where two of his campaign coordinators have acted with political recklessness, violating the constitution and the rule of law.

The SNG reminded Jonathan that Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, his coordinator in the state, had refused to honor a court order re-instating the impeached deputy governor, thereby leaving the state with two deputy governors. They also remarked that Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun was working with a state assembly of minority lawmakers who had purportedly impeached the majority of their counterparts.

Rather than pledging to help restore order in the two states, Jonathan countered that Mr. Kayode Fayemi, the recently inaugurated governor of Ekiti, had arbitrarily dissolved the state’s local government councils. The SNG delegation implored Jonathan to take more interest in the illegalities perpetrated by members of his PDP across the country if he wished to set a tone for addressing the nation’s political logjam.

In an often contentious meeting, the SNG also criticized Jonathan's declaration that there was no longer any need for a Sovereign National Conference to resolve issues pertaining to Nigeria's federal structure as well as other social, economic and political crises. Jonathan admitted that he was not misquoted in his dismissal of the idea of a national conference, but told his visitors that he feared that the statement might be used against him in the future.

A source within the SNG delegation told Saharareporters that they were shocked when Jonathan launched into a lengthy criticism of the four-year. “We were bewildered to hear him say that he would prefer a one-term tenure of seven years instead.” Jonathan told the SNG that he thought it was too expensive to run elections every four years, preferring instead that both the president as well as governors should get a seven-year tenure.

Speaking about his political chances, he told the SNG delegation that he did not see how Atiku could defeat him in the primaries or how any other opponent could unseat him in the general elections. “You can't defeat an incumbent,” he said, to the shock of his guests.

Muslim, Christian Groups Use Same Room for Worship

Isa Umar Gusau26 November 2010

Port Harcourt — Two Muslim and Christian groups have in the past eight years been using the same room in a building in Port Harcourt for the five daily Islamic prayers as well as weekly church services, Daily Trust learnt in Port Harcourt.

Our correspondent who was at the nearly completed bungalow located within a large block making factory at 133 Abloma Road, monitored a group of Muslims in congregation and individually, praying inside the room which also has a church setting with a glass pastor's podium and seats for other worshippers. Service holds every Thursday, 4 pm to 6pm in the same place.

It was discovered that five Muslims from Nigeria and Togo have also been squatting in the room for years while their friends and any Muslim passerby who seeks where to pray, is shown the same place.

Samaila, alias Baba Suya, who runs a local barbecue in the area, is one of the Muslims who live and pray in the building and he is popular amongst the locals because he is an errand boy to Mr Ken, the owner of the house.

"For eight years, we have been living and praying in that place which also serves as a church. The church holds every Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, some people usually come to conduct services which has been the case for many years. They know we pray there but what we do is that before their usual service we pack up our mats and clear the place for them. When they come we exchange pleasantries warmly and they do their service after which we bring our mats at night and we don't move anything till the following Thursday for their service".

Ever stopped to ask how we got to the 1.3 million number? Years of strikes and neglect from the government, mind you. Many in school today ought to have graduated long ago, but have had to stay on due to delays caused mostly by strikes many of which the governments continue to ignore for as long as it can. Essentially taking up spots that should have been opened up to newcomers. So, instead of using that number as reason to build more without considering what we are really doing in attempting such, I suggest we get a better understanding of what the true problems with our system really are so we can come to find better solutions that will better us now and the coming generation.

I am not against building of new schools, and I believe I made this clear in my last post

RECAP
Increasing population. Strikes in tertiary schools has nothing to do the number jambites.

NewsRescue- In this video the “magical sword” is apparently harmlessly and bloodlessly placed through a practitioners neck and he is paraded around the square.

These are the Ekpo of the Annang tribe from Afaha Obong, Abak, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Later in the video another practitioner is seen also harmlessly, bloodlessly and apparently painlessly slicing through his arm and parading this.

The question is- how do we refer to these amazing feats? Do we limit them to the ‘occult’ a disparaging reference to superhuman feats, or do we recognize them as exemplary scientific feats on par with ‘western’ system scientific accomplishments and worthy of publication.

The African spiritualist, herbalist and traditionalists were the physicians that kept Africa thriving and surviving as the blooming population we know, up until the white man came along with very dangerous diseases(like Gonorrhea). They were sufficient and provided remedies for all diseases. They had ethic codes, therapy documents, conducted research, shared information and provided the public health education and information.

What is their role in the modern society? Is their valuable scientific expertise being ignored to our own detriment and irredeemable future loss.

Cancer yet uncured by orthodox medicine has evidently been cured over and over by naturalists, including the famous Gerson institute operating out of Mexico that have cured and continue to cure cancer patients from all over the world with herbal remedies, including special fruits mixes and enemas.

Vade Mecum (NVS)- I hold the view that many of the practices of the African masters of traditional healing can be cleaned up, upgraded with research and made available for the good of everyone in the society. The catholic church is presently carrying out research into traditional African medicine in a monastery in Ewu, Esan, Edo state, Nigeria. Folks travel from far and near to buy traditional medicine at the monastery.

Well, it would be an arduous, painstaking and onerous task for the Nigeria government to tap into the mysterious world of the practitioners of the arts we call African magic. Many of the magical arts of the African traditional jazz masters are manifestations of forces invoked from the spiritual realm. This is in contradistinction to Western scientific approach to learning and creativity, which has an intellectual oriented template.

The Bayelsa State government will donate 200 hectare of land at Otuoke, President Goodluck Jonathan’s village, for the commencement of the new federal university to be sited in the state, Timipre Sylva, the state governor has said.

The site allocation was unveiled on Wednesday, when the minister of state for education, Kenneth Gbagi, paid a visit to the governor in Yenagoa, requesting for allocation of space for the university, which is one of the six which was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council.

Mr. Sylva also promised to relocate every structure around the site at Otuoke to pave way for the immediate take-off of the university. The governor expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for siting one of the six new federal universities in Bayelsa, describing it as a quick response to the educational needs of the people.

The minister had earlier told the governor that the new federal university, which was allocated to Bayelsa State, would be located at Otuoke, in Ogbia local government area of the state.

With a little more than 20,000 people, Otuoke and Oloibiri, the communities where crude oil was first discovered in commercial quantity in Nigeria, belong to Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State.

Ota, 16, garnered the highest grades in English Literature and English Language; Mathematics, Statistics, French, German, Latin, History, Sociology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and IT qualifications equivalent to three GCSEs.

Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Dozie Nwanna, described the girl's feat as exemplary and highly commendable.

"You have wiped our face and brought pride and honour not only to your parents but to the country and other Nigerians living in the UK," Nwanna said on Tuesday.

He said Nigeria was full of talents and outstanding personalities who continued to excel in various fields at home and abroad, making them deserving of recognition and celebration.

Also, the Head of Chancery, Mr. Ahmed Umar, said the initiative to honour Ota was a further attestation to the high commission's policy of recognising and celebrating Nigerian achievers in the UK.

Ota, who wants to become a medical doctor, said she studied Latin twice a week during her lunch breaks to meet up with the challenges.

"I stayed home a lot and put in a lot of work for my GCSEs because I want to become a doctor though I know it is a very hard and competitive field, and I know I need to do extremely well to get into medicine," she said.

Ota has already secured a scholarship to attend King's School in Canterbury where she will study Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A-levels.
