Electricity workers frustrate Jonathan's plans for power sector

Martin Ayankola

Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc's workers are preventing the Professor Barth Nnaji-led Presidential Task Force on Power from discharging some of its duties, our correspondent has learnt.

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jul/20/806.html

It was gathered on Monday that although Nnaji's committee wanted to have an office in PHCN's headquarters in Abuja, the workers prevented it from doing so, as they barred members of the committee from the headquarters.

An attempt by Nnaji's team to also inspect PHCN's facilities in Lagos on Friday was met with stiff resistance by the workers, who allegedly drove the members from the Ijora facilities.

It was also gathered that the workers had physically prevented members of the committee from entering the company's facilities at the Ikeja Distribution Zone.

"We had bought bags of sachet water, with which we would have drenched him, if he had been bold enough to show his face at the Ikeja Distribution Zone,"one of the National Union of Electricity Employees' leaders told to our correspondent on Friday.

All attempts to get Nnaji to comment on the situation proved abortive, as he told our correspondent on the telephone that he could only be available for comments on Thursday.

Engineer Sues Wife For Adultery, Disowns Son

A Lagos-based man, Engineer Stephen Isere, has told an Ejigbo Grade ‘A’ Customary Court that he is ready to forgo all his valuables and personal belongings just to ensure that he is legally separated from his wife of 26 years.
Stephen, while giving evidence before the court, revealed that he was equally in doubt over the paternity of their first child, whom he said he was not aware of his birth and naming ceremony.

Speaking on his wife’s alleged adulterous nature, the Edo-born engineer revealed that his wife had unlawfully aborted three pregnancies and had practically turned herself into a public toilet, whenever he was away on duty.
Giving reasons for doubting the paternity of his first son, he claimed that his work as an engineer usually takes him around the country and he was hardly available to perform his conjugal responsibility to the wife.

He said that it was during that period that his wife got pregnant and bore his first son, whose delivery, he was not even aware of. He added that on the day of the christening, his wife allegedly invited a military man to play the role of a father to the child.
He told the court that when he got wind of what his wife had done, he was perplexed but later forgave her and they continued their union happily until later when the son in question started displaying questionalble character.

The engineer lamented that the boy does not recognise him as his father and has also instructed his younger brother to follow his footsteps.
The father of four further accused his wife of ruining his business, his contract and his life with her witchcraft and diabolic powers.
“When the going was good, I send my wife N100,000 per month for her upkeep and that of the children. Gradually, things began to change from bad to worse for me. Gradually I started losing many contracts and her upkeep allowance started to reduce.

“Things finally packed up in April, 2009 when my financial strength fell from grace to grass. My wife confessed to me that she was the brain behind my financial setback. She promised to deal with me mercilessly for no just reason. She accused me of squandering my money on small girls,” he lamented.

He told the court that he was willing and ready to give away all his valuables and personal belongings just to regain his freedom and peace of mind.
“My Lord, I am willing and ready to give away all my valuables to this woman to show how frustrated I am,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, his estranged wife, Mary Isere, denied the allegations levelled against her by her husband, adding that the reverse was the case between them.
She pleaded with the court that she is still in love with her husband and would not want to lose him, especially for the sake of their four children.
After listening to both parties, the court adjourned the matter for further hearing.

Crime21 Suspected Kidnappers, 25 Cultists Arrested In Abuja, Delta by AloyEmeka8(op): 1:17am On Jul 21, 2010
21 suspected kidnappers, 25 cultists arrested in Abuja, Delta
By Sola Adebayo and Adelani Adepegba
Wednesday, 21 Jul 2010

The police and operatives of the State Security Service in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested a total of 21 suspected kidnappers and 25 cultists.

While the Delta Command of the Police picked up 17 suspected kidnappers and 25 culprits from different parts of the state, the SSS in Abuja nabbed four suspects who allegedly abducted a civil servant and a businessman.

The Delta suspects were paraded before newsmen in Asaba, the state capital, on Tuesday, as a prelude to their arraignment in court for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, gave the names of the victims of the suspected kidnappers to include Madams Afuenya Abaja and Elizabeth Ngeligu as well as Mrs. Stella Dafinone, Mrs. Queen Ogboru and Mrs. Malechi Odozi.

Alkali said the suspected kidnappers were apprehended from different locations in the state, adding that the feat was made possible by the support of members of the public who volunteered information to the security agency.

He said the gang which abducted Queen and Odozi had demanded N400,000 and N30,000 ransom sums respectively, before the police swooped on them at a hide-out.

He identified the suspected kidnappers to include, Fedelis Ojugbale, Chinedu Oruya, Ediki Ogeraga, Julius Onoameya, Odrehohwo Egieta, Lucky Atunusha, Henry Owokpite, Favour Akpowma and Nicholas Odu.

Others, according to Delta CP are: Fidelis Ochuko, Kelvin Itejere, Kelly Ochuko Jonathan, Joseph Enakpodia, and Daniel Akeghe.

Furthermore, Alkali stated that Madams Abaja and Ngeligu were kidnapped by a12-man gang at Umukwuata in Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state.

In the Abuja arrests, the suspects were at the point of collecting the N500,000 ransom they demanded from the families of their victims when they were nabbed by SSS operatives.

The members of the kidnap gang include Ifeanyi Chukwuka, Ezebunwa Ogbonna (a.k.a Oceanic), Nkem Nna, and James Chinweikpe.

Parading the suspected kidnappers in Abuja on Tuesday, the SSS Director, FCT Command Headquarters, Mr. Mike Fubara, said they had asked for a ransom of N50m through their leader, identified as Chukwudi who was still at large, before reducing it to N.5m.

According to Fubara, investigation have shown that most kidnap cases in the FCT were perpetrated by non –residents who lodged in small hotels in the suburbs, posing as construction workers which enable them to come and go at will without the management of such hotels suspecting their activities.

While promising that the service, alongside other security operatives would do everything possible to rid the FCT of such hoodlums, Fubara appealed to members of the public to always alert security operatives on the activities of persons they suspect.

Se/xual Advances From Younger Men Are Too Much - Rachael Oniga
Source: NigerianTribune

Rachael Oniga is one of the crossover actresses who has adapted easily and made name for herself. She speaks with Adunola Fasuyi on her life and other issues. Excerpts:

You once said you were a tomboy in your childhood days. Tell us more about this?

I was born in Lagos, grew up in Lagos and I am still living in Lagos. Though, I am from Delta, but I see myself more as a Lagosian than a Deltan. I had my primary school education in Abule-Oja in Lagos. My friends were boys, I rolled, played, climbed trees, fought and did everything with boys. Then I saw myself more as a boy than a girl. When I look back, I just wonder what kind of a child I was. So, my father thought he had to slow me down because, to him, it was not lady-like.
Because of this, he withdrew me from Lagos and took me to Edo State to complete my secondary education. I was out of Lagos for five years. To me then, it was wickedness and punishment, which I never deserved. Though, I managed to pass out with good grades, I never liked the experience, it was like taking out my soul from me.
It was a terrible experience for me and I never really forgave him for that singular action. Though he meant well for me, but it was devastating to me.

Did it affect you in anyway, maybe your education, relationship with people and all that?

Of course, it affected me. Though, I passed out with good grades, I felt I could have been a better person if I was left to be myself afterall. My relationship with the boys didn’t affect me academically. You know that your childhood friends are your true, real, loyal and sincere friends. The relationship is not conditional, it is just genuine. As a child, that innocence is there, so the friendship is usually heartfelt. My father’s action cut me off from my true, original friends with unconditional love of a child. However, thank God for Facebook, which can connect you to people worldwide, I have been able to hook up with some of my childhood friends through Facebook.

Did you let your dad realise this and did you forgive him?

Of course, I let him realise the pain he caused me before he died. I would say I tried to forgive him, in fact, I don’t want to discuss it again because it pains me. I am only saying it because I want to tell parents out there that it is important you consult with your kids and be friends with them, try to really know them and listen to them because decisions you take for them while young can have a lasting effect on them.

Can you speak your local dialect?

Oh, yes I can. When we were growing up, we spoke English language and my dad was a strict person, but once in a while, my mum spoke our dialect to us. So, from that, I picked and can speak my local dialect.

Was your family a large one?

Well, not really, because we were six, but we lost one, leaving five of us. And I am the second in the family.

How would you describe yourself?

I am a very private and homely person. That is not to say that I do not enjoy parties, but I select the type of parties and events I attend. I would say I am a very hardworking woman. I am sociable, friendly, a good listener and that is why my children and I are friends, we relate very well, not just as parent/child, but as friends. We play together and do things together.
They teach me current and reigning dance steps, because they know I love dancing. We discuss fashion together too, I know what is in vogue through them, they learn from me and I learn from them too. I hear them out, get their opinions on something before I decide because I don’t want to repeat the mistake of my dad. One thing again that most people don’t know about me is that I am a chief of Ile-Ife.

Rachel Oniga

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, bestowed on me the title of Yeye Amuludun of the Source. That is to show you that even though, I am a born Deltan, I see myself more as a Yoruba and I am happy that the Yoruba appreciate me and that is why I have that title.

How do you combine acting with the home front?

Well, I thank God for giving me nice children. It has not been very easy, I must confess. I had to put them in boarding schools as early as seven years because the job is really tasking and time consuming and I needed to work very hard to give them the best since their father was not there for them. I just give glory to God because it is a calling. But anytime they are around, I try to give them ample time, get to know them, play together and be their friend. We are good friends and now, they are grown-ups in the universities.

You must be very lonely as a widow. How do you cope with the loneliness and single parenthood?

Though, I am widowed now, for so many years, I have been separated from my husband, so I have been a widow and a single parent for almost 18 years now.
The fact of being a single parent is the more reason why I had to work very, very hard. Agreed, there are lonely periods, but I get busy with my job. Ordinarily, wives and hubbies should be together, but for me, I have been like this for close to 18 years. I am used to it, but I still thank God for my lovely kids.

You are a beautiful woman, how do you handle advances from men? Do you have plans to remarry?

As for the men, I simply appreciate them and thank them, but its not strange to me because as I said, I am used to men. In fact, I have more of male friends than females. Without sounding immodest, the pressure from men is much, even younger guys make advances at me, but I handle them maturely as friends. On marriage, I cannot really say, but God knows best and He alone knows the future of everybody.

The Yoruba boycotted Abacha conference, so zoning does not affect us. Abacha hand picked people to the conference. Is like if Jonathan now hand pick northerner to claim the north can not contest. Would that be fair. NO. So zoning is not fair because the Yoruba boycotted the conference.

So it making zonning illegal. Any nigeria can contest for elected office.
On the issue if a minority can not get political power without zone, that is not correct.

The problem with the system. It is men who never did anything as governors of state that want power. They do not justify, why they should be voted by people.

Governors steal money in Nigeria, and have nothing to show for it and expect to be president. Ask anybody who want to be president, what did you do as governor. And post it online for people to see. nothing.

Oyo: Obasanjo mediates in Alao-Akala, Alaafin feud
From Tunde Sanni in Ibadan, 07.20.2010
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have waded into the row between the Oyo State Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who recently alleged that there was an assassination plot on his life by the governor.

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jul/20/217.html

The former president reportedly had closed door parley with the monarch as well as Bishop Ayo Ladigbolu, a close ally of the Alaafin, who is also one of the princes of the town and a revered cleric.

Aside from the Alaafin’s alarm, the governor is under pressure due to the grievances of some founding elders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are kicking against the formation of the cabinet and party at all levels.

The former president’s mediation role, which commenced last week peaked on Sunday when Obasanjo paid visits to both the governor and the monarch.

Information about the former president’s shuttle to the ancient palace was sketchy as at press time, but sources however told THISDAY that the former Nigerian leader might have persuaded the palace to resume his once cordial relationship with the governor.

It could not be confirmed if Obasanjo dabbled into the alleged assassination alarm of the monarch on which he petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan and other top security agencies in the country.

However, the former president left the ancient town for Ibadan where he reportedly held yet another closed door meeting with Alao-Akala at the Government House.

Again, details of the Obasanjo/Akala meeting were unknown.

A THISDAY source hinted that the meeting with the governor extended beyond the Alaafin debacle as it deliberated on the various schemings in the ruling PDP in the state and the opposition to Alao-Akala’s comeback bid in the 2011 general elections.

The source stated that the meeting deliberated on the need for rapprochement between the mainstream party and the aggrieved elders, who are on collision course with the governor over the control of the party.

The meeting, it was gathered ended with Obasanjo advising Akala to extend another hands of fellowship to the aggrieved elders and seek other ways of harmonizing them into the government in order to pave the way for a smooth and successful poll in the party.

The new leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last week indicated that fresh party primaries would be conducted in some states which included Oyo as there reports before the electoral agency indicated that the initial primaries were crooked.

At the meeting between Obasanjo and Alao-Akala were former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN), former governor of the state, Chief Kolapo Ishola; Chief Saka Balogun, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu; Chief Jacob Adetoro among others.

2011: IBB to flag off campaign in Ibadan July 29 …takes over Adedibu’s political machinery
By Dayo Benson, Political Editor
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Ahead of 2011 presidential race which he has vowed to contest despite zoning controversy, former military president, Gen

Ibrahim Babangida has taken over the political machinery of late political godfather, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu to actualise his ambition.

Members of Adedibu political family are set to flag-off South West for IBB campaign July 29 in Ibadan at a ceremony which Babangida is expected to attend.

It was reliably gathered that Babangida had been funding the Adedibu political machinery since he declared his presidential ambition as part of his strategy to win South -West support in the Peoples Democrtic Party, PDP, presidential primary.

A prominent member of the group and one time Oyo State deputy governor, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi confirmed the development in a chart with Vanguard yesterday. Gbolarumi who was one of late Adedibu political disciples told Vanguard that since

Babangida was the first person to approach the group for support, they had no choice but to make the structure available to him.

According to him, the flag-off for the South West campaign comes up July 29 in Ibadan. IBB is a Nigerian and a member of the PDP and we cannot work for any party outside the PDP as we are all members of the same political family. IBB is the only one that has consulted us and asked for our support.

"Charles Soludo Sent Thugs To Disrupt My Sister's Burial" -Dora Akunyili

Following reports of fracas at the burial of Dora Akunyili's sister in Anambra she sent out this press statement from her father’s compound at Nanka, Anambra State.

Dora Akunyili's statement:

"I came down to my village to join my family, relations and well wishers to pay my last respect to my late sister Gloria but unknown to me, my family and invited guests, a large number of thugs loyal to Prof. Charles Soludo were carefully organized to disrupt my participation in my sister’s burial ceremony.

I have never seen the number of thugs I saw on Friday in any event. The thugs were also instructed to embarrass my invited guests.

As you may be aware, Prof. Charles Soludo is marrying my late elder sister’s daughter Nonye. So we are in-laws, but since he lost the last gubernatorial election in Anambra State, Prof. Soludo has singled me out as the source of his failure to win the election, and he convinced my sister to believe that I was the cause of his failure.

All efforts by people to make him understand that I alone cannot make him Governor have failed. So he brought that anger, grudge and frustration to the burial of his mother in-law who is also my elder sister. All arrangements made by me and my other siblings to receive guests at Isuofia, where my late sister was residing (which is also Soludo’s village) were vandalized by Soludo’s hired thugs. They followed this up with text messages of blackmail to my guests, friends and well wishers. When the environment in Isuofia became too insecure, tense and hostile, I quietly relocated to my father’s compound at Nanka which is few kilometres away just to avoid trouble. But Soludo’s thugs also trailed us to my own village Nanka to commence trouble but the security agents quietly dismissed them.

I want to remark that my late sister Gloria was a very peaceful, Godly and well brought up woman. While she was alive, I enjoyed her love and friendship as a sister no matter what Soludo and his hired thugs think. Because of this, even in death, I will do nothing to dishonour her because what Soludo and his thugs has done is to dishonour her but God has taken control. I therefore wish to thank all my invited guest for their understanding and the church for their prayers and co-operation.”
