Runsewe and Uti

There has been calls from several Nigerians to make Uti Nwachukwu, the BBA All Stars winner, one of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NDTC) Ambassadors, but the Director General of the corporation, Mr Segun Runsewe will have none of that.
His reason is because "This guy plaits his hair and wears ear rings, which I consider unAfrican"

Plaiting hair and wearing ear rings is unAfrican? Lol, if you say so oga DG!
But what do you guys think. You think he's got a point?

If it is doctrinal differences within the same religion, I wouldn't advise it but if it is something like Christianity vs Islam, it is a no no for me.

The belief that ibo women dont divorce is a thing of the past, infact it is now a once upon a time story!
Do yourself a favour, visit a magistrate court close to you and you will series of ibo couples and other tribes sitting for their names to be called for the unting of the knot, I have personally witnessed this several times so I am not telling you tales. You can as well do your research online and read more than you ever expected.

Infact I know up to 4 igbo women who have divorced and 3 have re-married now.
So, you dont have to kill a man cos he beats you, instead separate and later re-unite or divorce for both soul to be.

So you now the official NL igbo stalker?. You go to registries to check the no of Igbos who divorce their spouses per month?. Why not expend that time and energy nto something that will improve your life?. People get time o.

Adultery: Iranian woman to receive 99 lashes

A demonstrator holds a picture of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani at a protest in front of the Iranian Embassy in Rome earlier this month.
An Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery now faces being whipped for indecency, her son said.

Iranian authorities sentenced Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani to 99 lashes after the Times published a picture purportedly of her without a headscarf, the British Broadcasting Corporation reports.

The Times later published a correction, saying the photograph was of a different Iranian woman.

After an international outcry, Iranian officials temporarily halted Ashtiani’s stoning sentence in July.

There are fears that the death sentence could still be carried out by hanging.

Ashtiani’s son had given several interviews saying he was told of the new sentence of 99 lashes by people who were recently released from the prison in Tabriz where his mother is being held.

On August 28, the Times published a picture it said was of Ashtiani that it had obtained from one of her lawyers.

The lawyer, Mohammad Mostafei, who has fled Iran, said he received the picture from her son, Sajad Ghaderzadeh - a claim Ghaderzadeh denies.

Ghaderzadeh said the new sentence was “an excuse to increase (the authorities’) harassment of our mother.”

In an open letter, he said his mother had been sentenced to receive 99 lashes “on false charges of spreading corruption and indecency by disseminating this picture of a woman presumed to be her without hijab.”

He said he did not believe the sentence had been carried out but that her family and lawyer had not been allowed to visit her for two weeks and she had not been allowed to use a telephone.

Ghaderzadeh said the family was appealing against the sentence.

In May 2006, a criminal court in East Azerbaijan province found Ashtiani guilty of having had an “illicit relationship” with two men following the death of her husband. She was given 99 lashes.

But that September, during the trial of a man accused of murdering her husband, another court reopened an adultery case based on events that allegedly took place before her husband died.

Obasanjo: I Was Humiliated In Canada

Olusegun Obasanjo.
Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo has narrated how he was humiliated in Canada while on a visit.

According to Obasanjo who was speaking at a forum in Ghana at the weekend, he was kept waiting for over three hours by immigration officials.

He said the reason for the delay was that he told the officials, who did not recognise him as former president of Nigeria, that he was a farmer when they asked him to introduce himself.

Obasanjo said because farmers are not held in high esteem in Canada, they asked him to step aside and he was left waiting for over three hours before his friend that he visited came to his rescue.

He said when his friend asked him why he was delayed, he told the man that he had introduced himself as a farmer.

Obasanjo said his friend said he should have said he is an agric businessman instead of farmer because a farmer in Canada suffers worse indignity than a peasant farmer in Africa.

Obasanjo said he wouldn’t have suffered that fate if he didn’t arrive Canada a day earlier than his friend expected him.

He narrated his experience at the forum to underscore the fact that everbody wants to be either president of a country, Secretary-General of the United Nations, or do other white collar jobs rather than go into farming.

The forum was attended by Ghana’s President Attah Mills, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Koffi Annan and several other dignitaries.

PoliticsNigerian In U.s. Gets 12 Year Jail Term For $1.3m Scam by AloyEmeka8(op): 1:21am On Sep 07, 2010
Nigerian in U.S. gets 12 year jail term for $1.3m scam

A 31-year-old Nigerian, Okpako Mike Diamreyan, who immigrated to the United States on May 30, 2008, has been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for planning an advance payment scam that swindled victims to the tune of $1.3m.
Deciding the case filed before United States District Court, District Of Connecticut on April 30, 2010, Mr. Diamreyan was ordered to serve 151 months in federal prison and pay $1m in restitution to the 67 victims he was said to have scammed between 2004 and 2009.

According to the charges files against the Nigerian and obtained by NEXT, “the defendant began committing advance-fee fraud in Nigeria and Ghana no later than 2004. In 2008, he came to the United States, where he married a young woman who supported him by working two jobs and going to school at night. Instead of taking advantage of this opportunity to start a new life, the defendant continued participating in the fraud scheme and, in fact, used his presence in the United States to further the fraud.

“The defendant made no effort to become a productive member of society; instead, he hoped to reap a fortune in crime,” the document read.
How scam worked
According to state prosecutors, Mr. Diamreyan and his accomplice duped their victims, saying one of the victims was called more than 1,200 times over a two-year period.
He was also said to have claimed to have various consignments stored in Ghana worth millions and promised his victims 20-percent commission in exchange for financial help in transferring funds to the US.

“In one such email, the defendant claimed to be in a refugee camp in Ghana, trying to move a consignment worth $23.4 million out of the country”.
Mr. Diamreyan was arrested on August 27, 2009 and convicted by a jury of three counts of wire fraud on February 16, 2010.
In a sentencing memorandum, the court said that “the only way to protect the public from further crimes by the defendant is to incarcerate him for a lengthy period of time.”

The Nanka New Yam Festival
By Jerry Adesewo

The Nanka community in the Orumba North Local Government area of Anambra State, has observed its annual Oririji (New Yam) festival, with a grand finale, held on August 21. It was the highlight of the three-day festival, held at the Isigwunwagu Central School Field, Ifite Nanka.

The 2010 edition drew the Ozuzu Nanka (Sons and daughters of the town) who travelled from far and near to their ancestral home and joined the regent of Nanka, Igwe G.N Ofomata to commemorate yet another fruitful harvest.

The festival had earlier kicked off with the Iriji Igwe celebration on Friday, August 20, at the palace of the Igwe Ofomata. Usually held a day before the New Yam festival, Iriji Igwe is set aside for the traditional ruler to mark his own version of the event, usually seen as the dress rehearsal for the grand finale. The Iriji Igwe attracts a lot of attention, as all the chiefs and titled men in Nanka are expected to be in attendance. This year’s event was a grand celebration during which the Igwe took the opportunity to honour Nanka indigenes who have been making the town proud in different fields of endeavour.

The grand finale of Oririji Nanka 2010, held the following day, Saturday, was a success despite the fact that rain started falling early on the big day. Some apprehension greeted the heavy rains that started at eight in the morning. But as providence would have it, about noon when people were expected to start trooping from their homes to the assembly ground, the rain had stopped.

The first slice

The ceremony got underway with heavy drumming and dancing, heralding the arrival of the seven villages of Nanka. Each village usually turns up every year with at least one Igba (traditional) dance group. Each of the villages – Agbiligba, Enugwu, Ifite, Umudala, Amako, Ubahu and Etti – tries to outdo the others in adding colour and gaiety to the festival. The air abuzz with heavy drumming and dancing, festival goers danced their fill before the arrival of the Igwe himself.

Starting the official activities, the master of ceremony for the day welcomed the special guests, including Polycap Emenike, Peter Chinedu and chair of the occasion, Kofi Obijiofo – all prominent names among the Nanka people.

With the arrival of the Igwe, other aspects of the ceremony took off, starting with a prayer of thanksgiving for the new harvest year. Then there was the breaking and sharing of the kola-nut, followed by the main event of the day: the cutting of the New Yam. This involved the ritual cutting of a piece of roast yam, a task performed by the Igwe himself in the presence of Ozuzu Nanka. In days gone by, gods and goddesses were invoked to be part of the cutting and eating of the first slices of New Yam, but this is no longer so. The prayer is now done in the Christian mode, to choruses of ‘Amen’ from the gathering. The king then cuts the yam and eats the first slice. This represents the very first tasting of the New Yam in the Nanka community, as no indigene of the town is expected to have eaten it before this time. After the Igwe’s first taste, leaders of each of the Nanka villages would come forward (in order of superiority) to pick a slice on behalf of their territories.

PoliticsAmaechi Signs Social Services Contributory Law Amidst Controversies by AloyEmeka8(op): 5:30pm On Sep 05, 2010
Amaechi Signs Social Services Contributory Law Amidst Controversies

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has signed the Rivers State Social Services Bill No. 8 of 2010 as passed by the State House of Assembly into law, despite the threat by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, NUPENG, and its sister organization, Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Rivers State branch, to go on strike without notice if the governor signed the bill.

Gov. Rotimi Amechi of Rivers State.

Following the criticisms that tailed the public hearing of the bill by professionals and concerned members of the public, the governor was invited by the state House of Assembly to throw more light on the bill on Monday 30 August 2010.
Also signed into Law is the Rivers State Fiscal Responsibility Law No. 9 of 2010.
Performing the ceremony today at Government House, Port Harcourt, Governor Amaechi said the two bills are extremely important to the state.
The governor pointed out that the Fiscal Responsibility Law, which has to do with fiscal discipline and responsibility, would protect public resources and ensure that public officers utilise public funds according to approvals in the appropriation law.
Amaechi, who reminded public office holders of the consequence of the failure to comply with the provisions of the law, explained that “it is an executive bill and a deliberate attempt by the executive to discipline themselves”.
He explained that similarly, the Social Services Contributory Law was enacted to raise funds for the management of social infrastructure as it affects Education, Health and Water.

He explained that his advocacy visit to the State Assembly to lobby lawmakers over the Bill was an indication of the importance he attaches to the Bill, which is geared towards providing free education and healthcare services to both the rich and poor in the state.
Governor Amaechi thanked the lawmakers for responding positively to the yearning of the people of the state through the passage of the bills, and promised that the implementation of the bills would be swift and responsible.
