Ekiti State Governor-elect, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has said that the party will not beg any ex-president, ex-governors or ex-senators wishing to defect from the party. He stated this at a rally organised by the party’s South-West Organisation and Mobilisation Committee in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday. The rally had in attendance the chairman of the committee, Buruji Kashamu, former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, state chairman of the party, Yinka Taiwo, party leader, Brimo Yusuff, governorship candidates of the party in Oyo, Hazeem Gbolarumi, Femi Babalola, Seyi Makinde, Teslim Folarin, Kehinde Olaosebikan and several members of the party. Fayose said, “This is the last time that any member of the party, irrespective of his position, whether former governor or president will be begged to remain in the party. If they want to join other parties, they can go. They should not disparage the party again because if they do, they will go. “They have enjoyed benefits in the party so they should respect the party, whether former president or senator. I left the party when I had misunderstanding with it and returned when we resolved our differences. The door is open for them to leave.” He added that he was in a position to lead the PDP’s campaign against the All Progressives Party in the South-West being the only person in Nigeria to have defeated two incumbent governors. He also promised that the best candidate would emerge from all the states, primaries as the party’s national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, favoured credible process. Akala said the purpose of the rally was to assure the people of the state that the PDP would release them from the suffering imposed on them by the present government in the state, calling on them to support the party’s return to power in the state. Fayose said, “I am the only person in Nigeria to have achieved the feat of defeating two incumbent governors, so I am in a position to give advice on how to achieve victory at the polls. We will defeat the APC in Oyo State and other South-West states with the support of the people. Our business in government is to perform and give due recognition to the grassroots. The APC has wasted the opportunity it has to perform by neglecting the masses. Elections are not won by propaganda but at the grassroots level. If Ekiti can do it, Oyo people can do the same,” he added, while also addressing the large crowd to register en masse during the voter registration exercise. Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Tuesday said his administration would soon start a new policy that would enable Lagos residents to own their homes after paying rents for a specified period of time. According to the governor, the new policy is known as “Rent to Own” initiative coming under the Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme. He added that the initiative would encourage more residents to participate in the state housing scheme. Fashola said this during a special interactive session with artisans in the state in Ikeja, explaining that a research conducted by his team showed that traders, transport operators, bricklayers and fashion designers, among others in the informal sector could conveniently pay for the homes across the state. He said, “The investigations indicated that most people in the informal sector could also afford the mortgage scheme, going by their monthly income and profit. So, the Rent to Own initiative will further make the scheme affordable for all and sundry. “I urge you to apply for your choice homes in the scheme because government will, through the Lagos Mortgage Board, ensure that artisans benefit from the scheme. The board will allocate blocks of flat to you in accordance with your monthly income and profit to enable you take part in the scheme. “What we need to do now is to help you order your record keeping in order for you to qualify. This is a new policy that is slightly different from the mortgage scheme itself, but will ultimately lead to mortgage. Your money will be saved monthly and put in the scheme.” Fashola also took time to brief the participants on security measure put in place in the state and urged them to be involved in the Residents’ Registration and the Commercial Drivers’ exercises of the government. Chairman, Lagos State National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, said average commercial drivers in the state could afford the homes and would participate in the scheme. He said, “Commercial drivers earn between N45,000 and N70,000 monthly. This is a good development; the Rent to Own initiative will make the housing affordable to our members.” Commissioner for Housing, Bosun Jeje, said the meeting was to encourage artisans to partake in the LagosHOMS. The seven-man panel constituted by the Adamawa state Acting Chief Judge, Justice Ambrose Mammadi to investigate Gov. Murtala Nyako and Deputy, Bala Ngillari for alleged gross misconduct is currently facing a dilemma as they have found it difficult to obtain a venue for their sitting. The management of J & J Hotel Villa, where the panel held its maiden sitting, has ordered the committee to pack out as customers of the hotel were being scared by the heavy presence of security personnel, including soldiers and the police. A source close to the committee told our correspondent that the clerk of the Adamawa House of Assembly, Mr. Francis Gbansenso had been running from pillar to post to source for another venue but his efforts were fruitless as other hotels he visited equally allegedly turned down his request for the use of their premises for the fear that their customers might also be scared away by the presence of security personnel. Following its inability to secure any venue for its sitting, the panel, it was gathered moved to the NLC club, where the state chairman of the NLC tactically turned down, their request as he was said to be in Saudi Arabia for the lesser Hajj. NLC Club, NUJ Press Centre rejected probe panel Efforts by the panel to secure the premises of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) also proved abortive as the journalists vehemently refused to accede to the request. A former national officer of the NUJ, who is alleged to be in the fore-front of negotiation for the release of the venue, allegedly contacted North East zonal leadership of the union in order to compel Adamawa council leadership to release the centre to the panel. But following disagreement within the state leadership of the body, an emergency state executive council meeting was convened where majority of the members kicked against the use of the NUJ press centre for the panel sitting. Efforts by the Clerk of the Adamawa State House of Assembly to provide soldiers to secure the building could not convince the journalists who stood their ground. It was gathered that the Clerk of the Assembly had earlier deposited N170,000 for the which was refunded after the state executive council of the NUJ had rejected the use of the centre and information available to LEADERSHIP indicated that the panel was yet to secure a venue as at the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, there were reports that the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, had hurriedly left for Abuja, for an undisclosed meeting. In a related development, the Council of Chiefs and Emirs in the state held a closed-door meeting towards mediating between the Executive and Legislative arms of government who have been at daggers drawn for weeks in the state. Obasanjo, Nyako attend Council of State meeting Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako were among former heads of state and state governors who attended the council of state meeting currently taking place at the presidential villa, Abuja. While Obasanjo is the only former head of state who hardly attended the council of state meeting, Nyako who has impeachment proceedings hanging on his neck, appeared unruffled when he appeared at the Villa. When his Borno and Yobe counterparts, Ibrahim Shettima and Ibrahim Gaidam accompanied former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown to the presidential villa for the safe schools initiative about a month ago, Nyako did not show up. But LEADERSHIP gathered that the attendance of Obasanjo and Nyako may not be unconnected with last minute efforts to save the governor’s job, as the panel set up to probe him defied the public holiday he declared in the state and proceeded to hold it sitting on Tuesday. Gusau Absent The minister of defence, Gen. Aliyu Gusau, was absent at the Council of State meeting yesterday. A source told LEADERSHIP that the reason for his absence was not known. However, he had attended a meeting at the vice president’s office the previous day. Another source said the minister might have travelled out of the country. Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State on Tuesday said, notwithstanding the crisis rocking his state House of Assembly, he would never be intimidated. Oshiomhole spoke in an interview with State House correspondents, shortly after attending a meeting of the Council of State presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. He boasted that even without state instruments, he confronted the powers that be on the streets of Abuja before he became a governor. Based on this, he said he was not a man that could be intimidated. He said, “Now, what is my position in this? Simple! Without a state instrument on the streets of this city of Abuja, we confronted the powers that be. We confronted the people who occupied this Villa from 1999 to 2007. I did along with my colleagues, across the 36 states we did. So, I am not a coward that can be intimidated. “One thing is that election is coming in 2015 and we have defeated the PDP consistently since 2009 that I assumed office. Every by-election, they lost. “The last National Assembly election, we defeated them in the whole of Edo South, which is about 51 per cent of the population. We defeated them in Edo North, which is about 33 per cent of the population. We defeated them in Edo Central, which accounts for about 17 per cent of the population. “In my own election, in all that they boasted that they were going to do, I defeated them in all the 18 local government areas, including the local government of the PDP godfather. “And so, what they are trying to do now is that having lost the election, having been rejected by the Edo people and knowing that another election is coming, they want to destablise the state and intimidate my person. “And as you read one Metuhsella or Olisa Metuh or by whatever name he is called, he was reported as saying that I am destabilising Edo State because I want to contest for Vice Presidency. Now, that is standing logic upside down,” he said. Oshiomhole said if he wanted to contest the vice presidency, he did not need to destabilise the government he currently heads. He said by his statement, Metuh had let the cat out of the bag: that the PDP was afraid for the rumoured ambition that he wanted to contest the vice presidency. The Supervising Minister of Aviation, Dr. Samuel Ortom, said on Tuesday that the reason the two bullet-proof BMW cars, allegedly bought for his predecessor, Mrs. Stella Oduah, had not been returned to Coscharis Motors was because the ministry had yet to consult President Goodluck Jonathan on the issue. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had reportedly procured the controversial cars from Coscharis Motors at the princely sum of N255m. The vehicles were said to be meant for the security of Oduah, the immediate-past minister in charge of the ministry. However, the former minister had appeared before the House Committee on Aviation, which probed the transaction, to deny that the cars were bought for her. Ortom said, “Before we comply, we have to carry Mr. President along and every other stakeholder. We can’t just carry the bullet-proof cars and dump them at Coscharis; we have to follow the due process. “There are documents to be filled; there are processes to follow. As soon as we complete the arrangements, we will take the cars back.” Ortom gave the position of the ministry as he spoke with journalists, shortly after he met with the House Committee at the National Assembly. The committee, which was chaired by Mrs. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, had recommended in its report that the vehicles should be returned to Coscharis Motors. The company was also directed to refund the full cost of the cars. But, during a recent oversight tour of some aviation agencies, the Onyejeocha committee discovered that the vehicles were still parked at the Abuja premises of the NCAA. The committee directed again that the cars must be returned, in compliance with its report, already adopted by the House. The committee gave the ministry two weeks to submit documents on the compliance status and to respond to several other inquiries, including the N174.7bn debt owed by aviation agencies. The documents were also to cover the $500m loan said to have been obtained from Chinese partners for the development of the aviation industry. But, at a meeting with Ortom and officials of some of the agencies on Tuesday, Onyejeocha observed that one month after the directive was given, no document had been submitted to the committee. Onyejeocha noted that, while the committee appreciated the fact that Ortom was a supervising minister, it was still his responsibility to ensure that all the information sought were provided. “We don’t have documents from you or any of the parastatals. We can’t make meaningful progress if those documents are not available,” she added. She said the committee sought for detailed information on the airport modernisation projects of the ministry. “For example, we found out that the contracts in Abuja did not follow the due process. “In Lagos, the tiles used at the protocol lounge were of poor quality, among others. “We don’t have the designs of the project; it is impossible to oversight a project when you don’t have the design,” she stated. Though, Ortom appealed for more time to produce the documents, he expressed displeasure over “the wrong impression” created about the N174.7bn debt. Ortom said it was the ministry that conducted an inquiry into the debt status and not the National Assembly, as reported by some media outfits. “When we came in, we wanted to know our total commitment. That was how a committee we set up and came out with this figure. It came to us as a surprise when there were reports that the National Assembly uncovered N174.7bn fraud in the aviation sector,” he added. The committee later adjourned the meeting by one week to give the ministry time to produce the documents. I remain PDP secretary —Oyinlola July 8, 2014by Tunde Odesola A former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that he remains the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party. He described as utter falsehood reports that he had been asked by the Peoples Democratic Party to drop his claim to the national secretary position of the party. Oyinlola said this in a statement on Monday when he expressed shock at the efforts to twist the details of his discussions with a committee of South-West leaders of the party last Tuesday evening. “I met the committee of seven on Tuesday evening at Chief Bode George’s Abuja house. Members of the committee are Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, Senator Lekan Balogun, Chief Bode George, Erelu Olusola Obada, Alhaji Salmot Badru, Mr. Segun Ilori and Chief Ishola Filani. “At my meeting with that committee, I informed them of my earlier meeting that morning with the President, the Vice President and the party chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu. “I told them my position which the president understood very well. At the end of that meeting, the committee, through Chief Bode George agreed that my meeting with the president had superseded their assignment. That was what transpired. I do not know where pretenders have got the message of falsehood they are now spreading that I had been asked to drop my legitimate claim. “I have said it many times. I will not trade away my claim to the national secretaryship of the party which the courts have affirmed,” Oyinlola said. Insinuations were rife that Oyinlola might have been persuaded by Jonathan to drop his claim and work for the governorship ambition of Chief Iyiola Omisore, the candidate of the PDP in Osun. Hearme: Ask how much is being paid for Montessori education per term in Lagos? Compared to your new per fee. Same story I will keep saying, if government cannot subsidize education, they should stop deceiving us.But what u were paying then, is it as high as this when compared with other universities. |
Dear mods, kindly consider this topic for front page for both the parents and students and general public at large to know what the administration of unilorin has come up with in this section. The link: https://www.nairaland.com/1458400/hike-unilorin-charges |
It is important for both parents and students and general public at large to know about the sudden new development in the school charges of University of Ilorin for the 2013/2014 academic session. I think the school administration under the leadership of Prof. Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali is callous. The hike in the university charges is abnormal. The school charges (University charges and faculty charges) is increased by 73% (100L). The bank charges is still intact likewise the minor charges per departmental borrowed course. The university charges and faculty charges now are far different from the old charges. While the university charges increase with 86.14% from #34,250 to #63,750, the faculty charges increase with 3.23% from #6,200 to #6,400. The total increase (in percent) of the total amount payable is 73% from #40,700 to #70,400 excluding the minor charges. This increase cannot be bear by all the students. Not all the freshers and returning students can afford the new charges. Likewise the increase in the acceptance fee from #5,000 to #10,000 as the acceptance fee and from #30 to #250 as the bank charge. NOTE: The charges above is for Faculty of Communication and Information Science, though all the faculty(ies) increase at the same rate. |
In my own view, I think the school administration under the leadership of Prof. Abdul-Ganiyu Ambali is callous. The hike in the university charges is abnormal. The school charges (University charges and faculty charges) is increased by 73% (Faculty of Communication and Information Science, 100L.) as a case study, (Other faculty(ies) may be more or less than 73%) The bank charges is still intact likewise the minor charges per departmental borrowed course. This increase cannot be bear by all the students, the concerned authority should please take consideration into the situation. |
