The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that a tyre burst caused the road accident involving British Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, resulting in two fatalities and minor injuries to the boxer.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this on Monday at the Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

He explained that the tyre burst caused the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team to lose control before colliding with a stationary truck.

The crash occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, and claimed the lives of two members of Joshua’s team, identified as his strength coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

Joshua, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is currently in stable condition after receiving medical attention in Lagos.

The police said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has identified a Nigerian man, Ibrahim Tunde Ijaoba, as a “criminal illegal alien” with an extensive criminal history, including violent offences and gang affiliation.

In a statement released by US immigration authorities, ICE said Ijaoba is a Nigerian national and a former member of the Bloods — a notoriously violent street gang known for armed criminal activity across several US states.

According to ICE, Ijaoba entered the United States illegally and subsequently amassed a long rap sheet involving serious felonies.

His criminal convictions include aggravated assault on a police officer with a firearm, assault and aggravated assault, armed robbery, obstruction of justice, drug sales, and escape from police custody.

US immigration officials noted that the offences reflect a pattern of violent and organised criminal behaviour, posing a threat to public safety.

ICE further disclosed that Ijaoba is currently under a final order of removal and remains in immigration custody pending deportation to Nigeria.

1) The fire started from a lister installed at the top floor. Who does that? It was bound to happen one day.

2) That market is overcrowded. No space for proper evacuation.

3) Nigerians are slow to react. Before that fire spread, they were busy making videos and laughing. Going about their business and selling. Do they know how quickly fire spreads? Given there were fuel generators in same complex. The first thing to have been done is swift evacuation of humans. Not goods.


4) Insurance companies have stopped insuring Island market shops due to high risk involved. Insurance companies do not want to lose. I think any smart trader ahould know not to have his/her shop and warehouse in same location. You have to spread your risk. An affected vendor had 2 shops in same building. I remember then in Ariaria, if they tell you they are going to their second shop, you will think it is 1minute away, they will take 25mins. Their warehouses are also away without active shops. So if it burns, you just know someone went there to set a fire.


5) That market should have a standby WELL EQUIPPED fire service. Not this one that came with weak hose. The shop owners should all be mandated to buy fire extinguishers and take fire drills. Provide them electricity and ban the use of generators. The day I went there ehn. Chineke! Everywhere noise and humans!


6) May God console all of them. This is a very sad way to end the year and I cannot even imagine what they are going through.

There are other varieties but the market we sell to determines the one we plant and to add to that the evergreen lady finger is more easy to manage when it comes to spraying pesticide than the other tall varieties and also get the best price in market.
