The Senate yesterday began the screening of the 47 ambassadorial nominees. The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs is charged with the responsibility of screening the nominees. Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, led the nominees to the screening venue. But it was all drama as some of the nominees failed to recite the National Anthem and Pledge. One of them could not say the capital of Lagos State as she insisted that the capital of Lagos is Lagos instead of Ikeja. Her answer threw the audience into a hilarious session for several minutes. Some others wobbled and fumbled as they laboured to recite the National Anthem and Pledge. Two Russian women have been spotted on a bizarre shoplifting spree where they stuffed sweets into their knickers before waddling out of the shop. Dressed in skimpy short dresses the pair were spotted on the supermarket's CCTV cameras. As the footage begins, one woman can be seen stuffing the sweet goods under her dress and slipping them into her underwear. She then shifts the items about to get comfortable as her accomplice comes into shot and repeats the odd tactic. The undercover theft was carried out when none of the shop staff were around, but was spotted on the Moscow shop's CCTV. Local media reported that the police are currently looking for the thieves with the footage released in the hope of identifying them. What could have warranted these ladies to believe in such a way? The city of London could be next on the list of target cities for twisted jihadis along with the US capitol Washington DC, it has been claimed. The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has, in no uncertain terms, expressed its desire to challenge the Nigerian Navy and even breakaway from the Nigerian union, saying that the ship called Nigeria is sinking and everybody is tired of it. The NDA also accused President Muhammadu Buhari of lying to his foreign allies, his citizens, as it insisted that even if it were going to dialogue, it would be in the presence of the international community. THE Niger Delta Avengers has gladly welcomed the Saudi Arabia Blackwater machineries. A spokesperson for the militants said “Blackwaters you are welcome to your grave, only death awaits you". It would be recall that President Buhari may have struck a $258 million deal with the Saudi Arabia ‘Blackwater’ military contractor to help the Nigerian Armed Forces in fighting militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta region in the southern part of Nigeria. A militant group, Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders, NDRC, based in Bayelsa State, yesterday, declared a two-week ceasefire within which it urged President Muhammadu Buhari to review his hard-line stance to dialogue with militants and first-rate leaders of Niger Delta to prevent total devastation of crude oil export facilities in the region. This came as the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, accused ExxonMobil of telling lies about the bombing of its Qua Iboe 48-inch crude export pipeline on Monday. Spokesperson of Avengers, self-appointed Brig-Gen Murdoch Agbinibo, stated: “ExxonMobil can deny or fool the general public about their export pipeline blown up on Monday. How long can they lie to their investors? Just in matter of days, the whole world will see the truth. Qua Iboe 48” crude oil export pipeline is down, so says the Avengers.” NDRC, which recently blew up the Brass Creek Manifold, the largest in West Africa, situated in Peretorugbene, Ekeremor Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, said: “With clear evaluation of the happenings and advice of well- meaning Nigerians and Niger Delta stakeholders, we hereby, declare a two-week ceasefire for a sincere and proper dialogue.” Spokesperson of the group, WOI Izon-Ebi, said in a statement: “We want the Federal Government to consult distinguished personalities, royal fathers and chiefs of the Niger Delta communities. BUSINESS – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Wednesday moved to reassure bank customers unsettled by last Monday’s decision to take over the management of Skye Bank. The CBN had forced the resignation of members of the bank’s board and management team, in what it called “proactive and unavoidable regulatory step to forestall the bank from falling into distress”. The CBN said Skye Bank had persistently failed to meet minimum thresholds in critical “prudential and adequacy ratios”, culminating in its permanent presence at the CBN lending window. Since the decision, bank customers have been engaging in panic withdrawals from their accounts in various banks across the country apparently in response to speculations that the country’s entire banking system was at the verge of imminent crash. The speculations were fuelled by reports that the takeover of Skye Bank was the first of 11 banks penciled for similar action by CBN for alleged massive breaches of financial regulations guiding their operations. Early this year, CBN in a memo signed by Benjamin Olakunle on behalf of its Director of Banking Supervision to managing directors and chief executives of banks expressed its displeasure at the massive abuses by the banks through insider related loans/credits that have driven non-performing loans portfolios to unprecedented levels. Although the affected banks were given till December to reconcile their credit records, the decision to swoop on Skye Bank has triggered intense panic in the sector. In a statement on Wednesday by its acting director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okoroafor, the CBN reassured bank customers that there was no truth in speculations making the rounds that the country’s banks may have gone or may be going into distress. The CBN described the speculations as “malicious rumours and unfounded”, saying the country’s banks were financially healthy and strong. Unless we restructure the country we cannot achieve economic diversification and growth. Implementing the 2014 National Conference recommendations will enable each of the six zones of the country to tackle unemployment, insecurity, poor power supply and infrastructure. Born July 1959, Maikanti Kacalla Baru is 57 years old. He is from Jama’are in Bauchi State, North-East of Nigeria, but grew up in Jos, Plateau State. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, and is well respected within the profession. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with a first class honours. He also holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Until his appointment, he was Special Adviser (Upstream) to the Minister of State for Petroleum.
