Phones / Re: 3G Data Reliability - Glo Or MTN? by ambyzown(m): 7:52pm On Feb 12, 2012 |
I find Glo data to be the most reliable of all the gsm networks. In terms of download speeds, Etisalat takes the honour, while MTN and Glo come in 2nd and 3rd respectively. But as most people have pointed out here, it's all location dependent. Find out which network works best in your location. For me it's Glo. |

@Wylout: Is that your max? That green colour is very rare. I'm trying to picture your car with a new set of 18" rims, smoky LED projector headights from nissparts, smoky tinted windows and a shiny new paint job. It would look good ehn? @Costee: That's invaluable information, I didn't know that. Guess I start seaching for a clean 04 model SL trim. I will miss the sporty feel of the SE though. Thanks for that bit of info. @Sultaan: Yes I cleared the old codes and turned off the MIL, but it came back on again after about 18miles. Still driving the car with the injector cleaner in the fuel tank. No noticable differences yet. Will keep you all posted. |

The temperature sensor (ECTS) on the other hand monitors engine coolant temperature and sends this information to the ECU. See Picture below.

@Wallie: You definitely have them mixed up. The Thermostat is a purely mechanical device with no electrical connections whatsoever. Its purpose in the engine is to regulate the flow of coolant so as to ensure that the engine operates at its optimal temperature. See the pictures below.

@Costee: Not yet. I wanted to replace the injector nozzle for cylinder no. 4 but my mechanic advised I use injector cleaner first, which I have done yesterday. So I'm gonna drive the car for two days to see if that solves the problem, if not then I'll have to change the offending nozzle. @Sultaan: I switched the coil pack no. 4 with no. 2 and still got P0304 which means the coil pack isn't the culprit here. Thanks for your suggestions though. I guess by Tuesday I'll know for sure what the problem is. |

For those owners of the Gen 5 and 5.5 nissan maximas, you may have noticed thet your car doesn't have a replaceable fuel filter. Chances are that you do not realise there is a filter of sorts attached to the fuel pump in the tank. It is advisable to have your mechanic take the fuel pump out once a year and clean out the plastic filter. You'll be surprised how much dirt gets into your tank. Ensure that your mechanic achieves an airtight seal afterwards to avoid triggering an EVAP code. |

femionasan: Are you sure about the P1650? Because I don't think it's a DTC that is applicable to your maxima. I can't even find it in the FSM. Wylout: No problem. I'm just so indecisive about modding, so need to see what someone else has done, so as to get "liver" to try it myself. As for that nissparts guy, that bobo want make person go thief. I've promised myself that whenever I'm in Lag again I must visit his shop if not to buy anything, but at least to feed my eyes. |

Glad to hear you sorted out your overheating problem cheaply. I wonder why I overlooked the water pump as a culprit. Anyway I'm happy for you. I too have my eyes set on the 6th gen but as you've rightly pointed out, the 04/05 models are a no go area. 07/08 is more like it. I'd say get one when you can afford it. The Infiniti is definitely more expensive that the maxima so if price is the issue here then stick with the maxima. They both sport the same engines although in a different configuration as the G35/37 are rear wheel drive. Anyway whatever your decision, let us share in your experience. Enjoy your day bro. |
Autos / Re: The Maxima Thread by ambyzown(m): 7:12pm On Feb 08, 2012 |
Wylout: Let me give you my experience with overheating in my maxima. When I bought the car, it had a single cell radiator and was working just right. However on one of my trips to Auchi, I noticed the engine was sounding strange (like the valves were tapping) and the power output dropped, so I turned off the A/C and slowed down. When I stooped at a nearby town, I noticed that the radiator had cracked and it was losing water from the leak. being that I was in the middle of nowhere, I pressed on after filling the radiator with water and took some extra which I kept refilling the radiator with. Whenever I added water to the radiator and started the engine, steam would shoot out of the radiator and the water would keep bubbling. I was sure my head gaskets were gone so I managed the car back home. The next day I went to my mechanic who suggested I should change the radiator first. After putting in a 2-cell radiator I noticed that the water in the radiator didn't warm up until after about 5mins so we decided to check the thermostat and found it was stuck closed. This revelation prompted us to check the water control valve and also found it faulty. I asked that both be removed and when I drove the car afterwards all was well again. I've been using the car like that and my engine runs cool. My A/C even seems to cool better now. The maximum temperature I have experienced ever since is 96oC. Why this long story you might ask, Your car's thermostat and water control valve actually constitute a nuisance in out temperate climate if they start getting old. Their only function is to help the engine reach its optimum operating temperature quickly especially in cold weather. Our temperatures here rarely fall below 36oC. However I must warn you that you risk your engine throwing DTC P1126 on cold days if you remove the thermostat and water control valve. I hope I have been of help. Cheers. |

@Nissparts: You must be a soothsayer. The ECU threw P0304 today indicating cylinder no. 4 misfire. I think I should begin with the injector nozzle first as that is the cheapest thing to change. I performed a resistance check on all the coils and got a reading of between 2.8 and 3.2ohms on all of them so I guess they are okay. Will post my results tomorrow. Thanks for your input. |
Autos / Re: The Maxima Thread by ambyzown(m): 8:20am On Feb 08, 2012 |
nissparts: Which of them should I check, because I don't think all six are malfunctioning. Moreover after about 5secs everything is normal again. You can see from the freeze frame above that engine was idling and vehicle was stationary when the malfunction was detected. |

I use a nissan maxima 2001 model and this is what you need to do. Remove your car's thermostat and water control valve ASAP. I had the same problem and had both removed, now, my engine temperature never exceeds 94oC However, before you do that, confirm that: 1. Your temperature sensor is not playing tricks on you. 2. Your reserve tank is not overflowing (indicating a deteriorated head gasket) 3. Your radiator cap is working properly For more issues on your maxima, visit my thread at https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-865425.0.html#msg10144622 |

Hi all, I have noticed a lot of Nissan Maxima users post various problems with their cars and very little help received in terms of actual solutions to their problems. I have started this thread in order for us to share experiences and help each other regardless of which generation of maxima you drive. I will begin with mine. I have previously used the 2nd 3rd and 4th generation maximas and currently own a 5th gen (2001) maxima. My car's MIL came up about two days ago, and when I performed a scan on it, I got a DTC P1320. i cleared it, and this morning it came up again. Does anyone have past experience of this DTC? If yes, how did you solve your problem? The car runs well, only that whenever I start the car, it doesn't run smooth for like 5 seconds and then it smoothens out after then. Below are screen shots from my PC-based diagnostic tool

Something doesn't add up here. If the quality of the videos found on his phone were good enough to make out the inscriptions on his ID, then his phone must be recording HD at about 720p which means the pictures taken by the same camera would be in the region of about 1mb each. 40,000 pictures of 1mb each is 40gb. We haven't considered the videos and music yet. Is there any phone available that has this much memory? Pls don't mention the iPhone 4S because it has an 8mp camera so its pictures would each be about 2mb large. |

Leopantro: You seem to be mixing RAM with internal memory. These are two different kinds of memories. RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This is where ur device's applications run when you are using them. Most applications remain running in the RAM even when u close them so that they can be quickly restarted when u need them again. Applications like instant messengers, mail applications, virtual keyboards are always running and use up RAM. Internal memory on the other hand is the part of the phone memory where you can install apps or store media or other data. These can be extended with the use of external sd cards. Your Apps2sd application can only help your internal memory but has no effect on RAM. SPB mobile shell is a launcher. How did you get it on your device? Its not a free app. I once used it on my Nokia N97 and loved it even though the nokia didn't have the processing power for it to run smoothly. I currently use Go Launcher EX and would love to try it on my Samsung GT-P1000. |
Phones / Re: Blackberry Messenger (bbm) For Android Spy Photos by ambyzown(m): 2:10pm On Jan 24, 2012 |
RIM is loosing market share everyday, two of its founding members recently resigned because of this. BBM is the most lucrative feature of Blackberry so why not push the application to the two leading smartphone OSs? Makes perfect sense to me. I suspect the application will be free to download, but would require some sort of monthly subscription to remain connected. The mobile networks will then have to pay a small fee for all android bbm apps activated through their networks to RIM.

Android phone users will soon be able to "ping" their buddies on BBM if the following story is anything to go by. SCREENSHOTS have surfaced of the Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry Messenger (BBM) app running on Google's Android operating system. The images are the first real signs that BMM will become available for Android users. The app is in beta testing currently but RIM will launch it by the end of the year, according to Techradar . A BBM icon can be seen on the Android menu and a contact profile page shows details such as the user's display name, PIN, personal message and status. The images supposedly came from a RIM employee who said the app works well with Android's push notifications. This is about all the information given away by the screenshots but we assume that the system will be compatible with Blackberry users. It is unclear whether BBM for Android will include BBM Music, which allows users to share music libraries with each other. Another possibility is a version of the Blackberry Messenger app for Apple devices. The fruit themed firm might not be so keen on the idea because it has Imessage, a messaging application that will come with IOS5. Car Talk / Re: Is Kia Rio A Good Car? by ambyzown(m): 10:38am On Jan 10, 2012 |
@Kunle-A: I agree that the 92-99 series Toyata Camry is a good car, but these cars come with engine sizes of between 2.0-3.0L. Add this to the size of the vehicle and you don't get a very fuel efficient vehicle compared with the Volkswagen Golf. Also, due to the number of people who own these cars in Nigeria, spare part prices have risen astronomically. The OP has requested for a car that is cheap to run and maintain. I don't think the Camry will meet his requirements. |
Car Talk / Re: Is Kia Rio A Good Car? by ambyzown(m): 11:05am On Jan 09, 2012 |
Siena has summed it all up. The only Rovers to consider at all are the 600 series (618i, 620i) which are basically honda Accords. Also some of the 300 series are basically Civics. The Achilles heel of the recent Rovers is the cylinder head. You may want to consider The Volkswagen Golf, The Nissan Sentra or the Audi 80. You can get these cars for less than N700k The Toyota corolla is a very good car, but priced a bit higher than others in its class. |
Car Talk / Re: Is Kia Rio A Good Car? by ambyzown(m): 7:16am On Jan 09, 2012 |
The Rio is a good car in terms of value for your money. Its fuel consumption is also very good, considering the engine size is between 1.4-1.6L. However, it is not as durable as other Japanese imports in its class. The spares are also very expensive and there aren't enough competent mechanics out there, which means you may be forced to take it to Dana for repairs at high costs. For these reasons, its resale value is very poor. Depending on what you intend to use it for, the Rio could either be a bargain or a burden. 1 Like |
