How much is your deficit?

quote author=riogrannde post=83655733]Hello guys.. please I need advice..
I was denied my F-1 student visa this morning at the Abuja consulate.
Interview went like this:
VO: can I have your passport and I20
Me: passed it on
VO: why Illinois?
Me: still talking when vo cuts
VO: you're going for your masters in law?
Me: yes
VO: you have a degree in law?
Me: yes I do
VO: are you a practicing lawyer?
Me: yes I am
VO: did you apply to other schools?
Me: yes I did. Was naming them when he cuts me...
VO: this program at Illinois is quite expensive, I see you were given a scholarship. You still will be needing approximately $40,000. Can I see bank statements..
Me: I give him my uncle's bank statement. Also supplements with mine.
VO: what does your uncle do?
Me: he is a contractor, deals in supply and sale of industrial and agricultural equipments/ building materials
VO: cuts in.... does he have children?
Me: yes he does, 3 daughters.
VO: how old are they?
Me: first is 36, second a few years younger, I'm not sure. Last is around my age.
VO: where do they live?
Me: first lives in Sweden, second lives in south africa and the last lives here.
VO: have they ever travelled to the US?
Me: I can't say..
VO: did you pay any money to the school?
Me: no I haven't
VO: ... types for a while, passes my passport and a green sleep. I can't issue you a visa at this time. Try again.

I'm still shocked, I don't know how to feel. I don't feel bad but I don't feel good either.
I have paid another visa fee. Hoping to apply again and secure another date before school resumes in January.

I was admitted into all four schools I applied to.
University of Illinois, university of San Diego, Arizona state university, st. Mary's university.
Illinois gave me $35,000 scholarship, San Diego gave me $10,000 scholarship.
Uncle had a closing balance of almost 10,000,000 and a good cash inflow.
I don't know where I went wrong. He didn't tell. All two F-1 applicants before me were denied.

Hoping to get another interview date in two weeks. I need advice guys[/quote]

Are u saying she shouldn't emphasize that she had GA, what if the VO didn't see it on her I20, I read a transcript here earlier last week where the VO asks the student why she chose the schl and not the other, the guy gave hee two reasons, the VO keep saying NO until the student mentioned that she had a scholarship that the VO was convinced and told him that's exactly what she want to hear...this people doesnt have a particular pattern in issuing visa abeg

AgreatMan:
It seems the VO had already made up her mind to deny you even before the interview.

3 years of work, a decent salary without u presenting your Personal SOA is subject to different interpretions. It could mean, "I have been working at this job, I haven't saved much from it after 3 years, so let me elope to US. After all, my monthly stipend will be way higher than my current salary."

In another post, u had said your job is your hometie. but a job that u were not able to produce your personal SOA can be viewed as a dispensable job. And this can be seen as a lack of home tie.

I am not judging. I know exactly how quickly salary can disappear.

If u have some money in the bank, try to get a personal SOA in addition to your Uncle's SOA, perhaps it might help.

I also think on this thread, we should play down this idea of funding being equal to automatic Visa, the walls have ears.

When d VO asked why this school, the first thing u mentioned was the money/GA. The problem with such line of reply is that u are telling d VO that if not for the money, u wouldn't have done your MSc. Nothing wrong with that except that u r putting it in their face. Funding should be the icing on d cake n should not replace great replies.

Care to share d amount on your uncle's SOA?

Is the $8k the total deficit i.e (tuition + living expenses) or the tuition deficit only?

Erhuns67:
School : Idaho State University
Course : Master in Mechanical Engineering
Date of interview: 26th June, 2019.
Lagos consulate :Visa Approved.
Scholarship: 65% waiver of tuition($16292)
GRE:311
I will encourage those with good Gre score and GPA to apply to this school cause Non-Resident Tuition Waiver is guaranteed.

When I am less busy, i will update my transcript.

thanks @sharwama for transcript review.

@gbeje, Since I've been here, I have not seen anyone going for PH.D in the US without funding got visa. I might be wrong tho but its always slim. PhD is really expensive hence the need for funding. Your answers are not bad. Not having funding for PhD is the problem

gbeje:
Visa delayed today at Abuja embassy
I was interviewed at the first window to the left by a slim young lady.
Transcript:
Me: Good morning
VO: pass your passport & I-20
Me: I did
VO: How did find out about the school
Me: I used usnews.com to search for the school...
VO: (cut in) and then?
Me: I discovered the school website, entered into the site and checked through the program's curriculum and faculty program which I foumd out to be suitable for my research goals.
VO: Did apply to other schools
Me: Yes I did
VO: which school:
Me: I applied to Louisiana State University, West Virginia University, Morgantown and University of Texas El paso
VO: Why did u choose this one?
Me: Apart from the fact that New Mexico State University hosts one of the 54 Water research institute in United States and as such the institute provide grants for all water related researches in the school which hopefully I am a potential beneficiary (Cuts in)
VO: I can see your uncle is sponsoring you
Me: Yes, my uncle
VO: Why is he sponsoring u?
Me: He has always been supportive of my education especially during my masters program when I related the limitations in.my research results due to nonavailability of required facilities. In fact, he encouraged me most of the time and and advised me to travel abroad for my doctoral research which he also promised to fund.
I EXPECTED HER TO ASK FOR HIS STATEMENT BUT SHE DIDN'T. INSTEAD SHE STARTED ANODA ROUND OF QUESTIONING THUS:
VO: Why do you want a doctorate degree?
Me: the doctorate degree is expected to raise my educational capabilities in research and teaching. Before now I've taught mathematics. Further mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at A level and pre-varsity centres. Such a profound program with will enable me(cut in)
VO: You are not eligible for visa now.
I WONDER WHY SHE ENGAGED ME IN A SUCH A LONG CONVERSATION AND STILL ENDED UP WITH REJECTION
I THINK I NEED FUNDING B4 GOING BACK O! ALTHOUGH MY FACULTY SAID I'M IN THE LIST OF POTENTIAL STUDENTS TO BE GIVEN FUNDING BUT THEY'VE NOT MATCHED THAT WITH ACTION.
PLS HOUSE, WHICH SCHOOL GUARANTEES PHD FUNDING WITH GRE SCORE OF 295 IN WATER RESOURCES OR/AND ENVIRONMEMTAL SCIENCE ENGINEERING?

Seriously, i don't understand anymore, the way im seeing things right now is that if u have no full funding without deficit, that automatically means "no visa".having Partial scholarship and full funding with deficits equally means no visa.l?
