I got this from a recipient of the SI scholarship. When you're trying to relocate to another country as a black person, one question to ask is how racist the host country is towards us, black people.
We cannot say because we're tired of situations in our country and in our honest search for better life, we fall into the hands of people that hate us to the level of wanting to kill us. That will be like jumping from frying pan to fire. And racism was also one of the issues on my mind when I was considering which country I wanted to study in.
Now, there's one thing that Sweden did that endeared me to the country. 5 years ago, Sweden ran a campaign where anyone from any country of the world could call a number and speak with a random Swede. Yeah, it was real.
The way it worked was, you call a special number (+467.... ), and you'd be immediately routed to speak with a random Swedish person, just any Swede in the country going about their day. No other country has ever done that.
The campaign has closed now, but it demonstrated to me how open Sweden is towards people of other nationalities, no matter where they're from. Another thing they did was quite remarkable.
At the height of the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015, Sweden received over 160,000 refugees from war-torn Middle East countries, looking for protection.
Alongside Germany, Sweden was one of the most preferred European destinations for refuge-seeking immigrants from Syria.
These were people from mostly Muslim backgrounds and Sweden opened its arms to them.
Swedish society is largely atheistic, most Swedes do not care about religion but there is freedom of religion.
Everyone is free to practice whatever religion they choose. There are churches here and there are mosques as well.
Oh. I also have some personal story to share about my experience with Swedish people.
When I was moving to Sweden in 2017, my university, Linköping University, arranged a personal free cab ride for me from the Linköping train station to the university campus I got to the train station and the cab driver was already waiting for me with my name tag. As I alighted from the train from Stockholm, an elderly tall Swedish man, seeing me struggle with my heavy luggages filled with local food supplies, helped me with one of the luggages to my waiting cab driver. I mean I was far far away from home but these folks were treating me like I was royalty. The man was a leader in the Swedish Church, gave me his card and we later met again after I settled down.
Even though he was an elder in the Swedish Church, not for once did we talk about religion.
That's how much respect these folks have for people's religious beliefs.
I got to the university, picked up my room keys, and my SI Scholarship debit card, and got another free ride in a Linköping University van with other new arrivals to my new accommodation. I mean, my journey from Lagos, Nigeria to my accommodation in Ryd, Linköping, Sweden was already planned to a T, all thanks to the typical Swedish kindness.
Now, am I saying there's no racism in Sweden?
Of course not.
Racism exists in every country of the world.
However, the fact is, majority of humans are good beautiful people, and Swedish people are not an exception. |

Chiggsglover: Why colder countries are Richer
Studies shows that as the average Celsius get lowers, there's a considerable amount of wealth this brings. Why is that?
Way back in time, the wealthiest part of the world used to be Africa, Why? Because we had bountiful resources per square meter. Evidence of this is observed in Egypt and other civilizations that came and ended. You see those pyramids, they're definitely the ones in the book of Exodus. Now that I think about it, it's amazing. The Egyptian you see today, ye shall see them No More. Now I get why the Egyptians were hated. They don suffer, it feels like jealously.
I'm already rambling....we used to be the wealthiest. We didn't have to look at the weather before we plant, we had various crops that grew better at different periods in a year, so we continued at that pace, we didn't have to be friends with neighbouring community, our blood just dey hot. Not majorly our fault, the sun made it boil, little things that should be ignore was exacerbated by the sun, and blood started to fall here and there. Due to the conflict, it was difficult for community to trade and develop. Inorder to do that, you need to seat together and reach agreement. How can you achieve that when your language is different. Get an interpreter, that was only recently, when the White men came. We carried on without coming together and kept progressing, at an incredibly slow pace.
Up North, away from wrath of the Sun, were People bleached from the Touch of ice, narrow pointed nose to reduce Frazil air from chilling their body, straight hair that grew longer without any curl and coil which ensured that they grew quickly enough to warm their head, neck and body, blue iris and pupil to let more light into their eyes in Cloudy days, Thin lips to ensure that very little body heat escapes to the Wintry weather; they've never been cooked like you and I.
They had to be friends with their neighbors, if not, they would starve in times of need. They had to make hay while the sun Shines, Without which, their neighbors will find their corpse the next Spring. I have often pondered about the saying before my adolescent why should I make hay when the sun keeps shining all year round, that saying never applied to us. It was the mantra that Launched them into the 18th century industrial revolution. In the 18th century, what was Africa doing? We carried on because we knew the sun will rise another day.
Caucasian, that's the word for them. I prefer not to classify them by the colour of their skin. Sometime last year, I said no one should call me Black, if you want to classify me by colour, Non-White should be the term. This covers everyone that's not White. These fellas knew that every year, they only had the luxury of the Sun for Only Three MONTHS a year. Some get it even lesser. They had to Plan. Big word right? Plan is missing in Nigeria, Prayer is not enough. MLK who said he had a dream was a Pastor. Lemme not talk much here, a word is enough for the wise.
When you know that there's going to be a short time in a year when you can farm comfortably and your crop will do well. What do you do. You Plan. From these seasonal planning it went on to community and regional planning to National planning that ensured industrial and mechanised farming, food Processing and preservation, trade, welfare and development...
These three countries are outliers, they're hot and still wealthy. Singapore, Hong Kong and the UAE don't rely solely on resources, they benefit because they're strategically located to become trade centres and they've planned to attract FDI to their economy. Nigeria is strategically located to attract these but political instability is setting us back.
An interesting example is Australia, Australia is a continent on its own, show you how huge it is. The warm region is comparatively poorer than the cold part. This is the theory in effect here.
IAmChiggs. You couldn't have said this better Chiggs. Hope you're doing great? |

Chiggsglover: In the Nigerian bookshops, there are alot. Especially in lagos and in some university's library.
For the recommendation, the first thing I'll say is that reading is not for Everyone. If you are motivated to read, I'll suggest to start from the autobiography of who you like to be.
Dont rush it, only read when you feel like. Pdf are readily available and I can easily skim through when I'm bored as I go through the day. Like in traffic, queues, lying down before I sleep.....instead of fuming in traffic, grab something you have passion about and read. Passion is important, it's really sad footballer dont write. But at least we have some figure heads who have shaped the history of the world that we get fascinated about.
My church spoke about Benjamin Franklin and I still met the guy in Assassin Creed, Rogue, it's a Video game, I got hooked and ran to get his autobiography, I managed to read William wilberforce, Bill Clinton, I couldn't finish bill Clinton but one thing I picked up and can never was that he volunteered in election campaigns of American presidents when he was young and he got really inspired. I also read Novels by Arthur conan doyle, he wrote Sherlock Holmes, this man used some techniques of the character to solve three real life national cases, I read some books before they became movies like The Elf stone of Shanara which made a series, Shanara Chronicles, Fifty shades of grey, I found the scenes in the other room too extreme, books by Stephen king, the film isn't as scary as the book, sidney sheldon series, was close to reading Harry Potter but I went for the film first , "Mockingbirds don't do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corn cribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Also read wizard of oz, interview with the vampire, pride and prejudice.....
I might delay in replying some messages, I usually will wait when its convenient so I can reply in the best way possible. Whao, thanks so much for the tips Chiggs. |

Chiggsglover: Well I started this thread here in Ireland. I started just before my exams and had to work with a plan. I was so busy with work, school, and other issues..... The plan is that I don't go through what I write. I just type whenever I remember this thread and if I have pictures to upload. if you observe, what I write is mostly unedited, lots of mistakes and all. Time here is very very valuable. My place of work was giving me three days off, and I just got very uncomfortable because I could be making money. Besides this isn't a stressful job to require that number of hours off.
I don't read as much as I do before I came here, I still have lots of autobiographies lying around, I managed to finish William Wilberforce just before I left Nigeria. I still have Johnny Depp and Micheal Jackson to consume. I would have finished both of them if I was still in Nigeria. The only thing I consume right now are just articles on twitter and some comedy videos on Instagram. The twitter is very important to keep up to date with the parastatals of government here as they update regularly, and my classic new paper. Yummy.
I'm glad that you guys think I'm improving as you're the mirror I've got. It feels better to know ones making progress. Great work here, @Chiggsglover, I want to ask if one can get these autobiographies in bookshops here in Nigeria, or do you just download the PDFs online? Also, I'd love you to give some recommendations on books that are good and interesting reads based on what you've read over time. Thank you |

He continued here: IN ADDITION TO MY PREVIOUS POST
Information is Vital here and so is everywhere. What you need/looking for is always somewhere, you just need to connect with the right person/use the right keyword for searching.
Some of our 9ja brothers here tend to hide information from their fellow 9jas even though it doesn't stop them from achieving their aim. So i tend to roll with more white people, in most cases, if you don't talk to them, they won't talk to you, so i always shoot first. A Brazilian friend of mine once sent me a job link when i told her i was looking for a part time job, it was a job related to my field and this company was looking for working students to work with some kinda data, no German needed. You will never find the job using google except you visit their website. Unfortunately, i didn't get the job but i was glad i applied as the interview taught me some new lessons on an international level. So don't feel too proud to ask for help/information, you never know the kind of information that fellow is holding.
AFTER RESUMPTION for the first semester and registration of courses, you might wanna check the next semester module, talk to students that did the courses in the previous semester to know how far, This is important so you wont go and larimo one professor Albert Einstein especially when the course is not really related to your Bachelor degree. A German student once told me not to choose a particular professor for a course project supervisor, i asked other fellows and they said the same.
If you have a knack for programming and you are proficient in Python, Java and JavaScript, you don't know what God has done for you.
Also, if you studied something related to Media in Nigeria like Mass Comm, you might wanna check Masters in Media and Communication Science in TU Ilmenau, the application is online (no need to send hard copy docs) and the admission is valid for 2 years but you get to pay application processing fees of 25 euros. For online application for Geoscience courses, you might wanna check University of Bremen. There is masters in Geodetic Engineering at University of Bonn, the program offers 3 specializations, but i think its only for winter application but the application is online.
Lastly, i have said this before and i will say it again, new applicants applying to uni assist (Masters), when sending your documents, look for courses in TU Berlin and University of Potsdam and apply there too, both universities are under uni assist but you don't need to pay processing fees as both universities have already covered the cost for their master programs. If you are going to state of Brandenburg particularly University of Potsdam, try and get your Residence permit in Berlin, you get 2 to 3 years, although accommodation might be a problem in Berlin. In Potsdam, you only get 1 year RP, for the second year, they might tell to fund another 9k euros to renew your RP. So make your research well. Your school ID card (either TU Berlin or Uni Potsdam) gives you free transportation that covers for Berlin-Brandenburg including all Trains and local buses., so no issue with Transportation cost. |

@Danielhouston, weldone once again. I've been following this thread right from the first page and I've learnt more a lot more about Deutschlaand. I don't mean to derail this thread with this post, but I would like to share a post I found while rummaging through past German Student Visa threads here on nairaland. I think it will be helpful for some people, though you've chimed in on most of those issues here. The post is by @Immafrank and I think the moniker is still active Oct 16, 2019 SOME USEFUL TIPS If you are having doubts about maybe the embassy saw/read your sent e-mails or not in instances like- sending of confirmation of BA, making inquiries concerning visa delay or other inquiries at alien offices of your intended cities. You can use google mailtrack to track your e-mails (Gmail users only), whenever the embassy or any individual read your emails, it will show a double tick and number of times your email was read and a single tick if it has not been read (you get notification for this, you can disable if you want to).
http://help.mailtrack.io/customer/en/portal/articles/1385608-installing-mailtrack
That is the link to setup google mail track on PC. Note that you have to install google chrome on PC and send the email (gmail) from google chrome but you can check with mobile after sending if it has been read. There are also android mobile set up which i am not very conversant with but for iPhone users, simply download Track - Email Tracking (the app icon is a green capital T ), install and follow up instructions. you can send messages to your friends to test it.
Futhermore, for people coming this winter, Buy Jeans in 9ja, there are some good stores in 9ja with good thick jeans, One low quality jean is 29 euros up here, except you are OBO. Budget about 50-100 euros for good and warm winter jacket, I believe the one you are bringing here is just for warm up, when real cold sets in, Omo nobody will tell you to buy correct one lol, gloves and money for winter shoes esp for places that snows heavily, it doesn't really snow in Berlin compared to Munchen. Get ready to buy thick Duvet. Sometimes you have to close eyes and buy good stuffs, and stop converting to naira when you wanna buy stuffs, it helps sometimes. If you are coming around November to December, you have to get some warm wears from 9ja, else you will perish in cold from the airport. Get 2 mouth extension, change your laptop cable to 2 mouth (not the powerpack, you know what i mean), bring bed spread and curtain, clipper, flashdrive, bring flipflops, liquids are not allowed on the plane but some people travelled with palm oil (make sure to tie it very well and wrap it), if you are using BA, come wit about 400-500 before you unblock, if you are using SL, budget about 2k for the first 4 months depending on the city and expenses, remember you start spending euros from the airport. Don't bring unnecessary stuffs like rice, spag, salt, sugar. Bring garri and noodles and condiments like maggi and curry.
That temporary warms/hoodie from 9ja is very important. I could remember the day I landed at the airport, before coming out of the plane, This German girl i was talking to from the connecting flight started to bring out her winter jacket, I didn’t know whatsup up then, coming out of the plane, see this mad cold breeze that blew, immediately I started shaking because I was juss wearing a top and a soft sweater, big boy hand drop ASAP, as I was breathing, it was like I was smoking due to the smoke-like air coming from my mouth (I don’t know how else to define, nobody told me the cold was like this). Then the bus that will take us to immigration came, all the irons in the bus was damn cold, I was seriously shaking, I was looking like a rain-beaten cat, this German girl offered me her jacket, unfortunately it was small and feminine. We got our loads, it was a little bit warm inside immigration, after we got out, immediately I open my big box, I brought out two reinforcements (still not enough but okay). Luckily for me, the girl’s mom came dropped me off at the main train station which was about 20 minutes drive from the airport, that saved me some stress. it is always the best when you have somebody to meet you at the airport(like a friend or family in the city you are heading to if it has an international airport). If you have money, there are drops at the airport
For Travels and movement in DE: Download the DB Navigator for general travels (Train, buses, Tram, etc.) and if you are coming to Berlin, download the BVG Farhinfo app (its shows you the fastest route and how to navigate easily) along with the DB navigator. I will say google maps is mostly important for directions on short distances and to know durations of long and short distance travels as well. It is important to have mobile internet on your phone if you are new to a place and going out. There is also FlixBus, it is like a subsidized bus travels mainly from cities to cities and to some EU countries.
For residence permit- for cities where you have to wait about 1 month before you get your card, and that is after 1-2 months before you get appointment in some cases, and you know you need work to survive, you can ask your RP officer on the day of your appointment to give you a temporary work permit, it is like an A4 paper with all your details including passport photo and it will be stamped, the paper will state that you had applied for a RP and the type of permit you will get including the number of days you can work which is 120 full day or 240 half days in a year. First thing first is to get an accommodation which is a prerequisite for city registration and issuance of a RP.
For health insurance, its a 2 way thing, the school will say public health insurance if you are not up to 30 years and private if you are more than 30, my guys not up to 30 years are using Mawista 33 euros monthly and it was accepted. Don't know how they did that but you can make inquiry from your school. TK and AOK is around 107 euros monthly. But public is better than private, if you fall off a bicycle or get hit by a car or have a serious ailment, the public like AOK pays everything but if you are using private, you will pay yourself at first and the private will reimburse some back depending on your insurance subscription with them which you must provide proofs for and trust me, and trust me these treatments are expensive.
And lastly, learn the language while you can, in big cities like Frankfurt, Munchen, Berlin, you might not really need it but in small cities, man you mostly need it to get a job at least A2 level. In all, you need the language to be open to more opportunities. if you will be staying in Bremen, Stuttgart, Rastatt or areas closer there or if you have friends living there that you can stay with, you can always apply for vacation job at Daimler Mercedes-Benz, for working students, they pay 15 euros per hour and you get to work 35-39 hours weekly depending on your contract (Do the Math) and you cant combine it with school work, thats why its called vacation jobs. Here is the website for Daimler Mercedes-Benz: https://www.daimler.com/career/job-search/ from position type, click vacation job. For Amazon Job: Amazon.force.com For general job search: de.indeed.com For buying of used stuffs like gadgets, and also job search in your area: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de Use google chrome browser for opening these sites when you get here for auto translations to English. Also, make sure to always check weather reports before going out because the weather is always funny. Android users download The Weather Channel app from play store, it is auto installed on iPhone.
When you get in, open N26 bank, one of the best online banks here. Activities are online, no bank branches, Fast and easy, Banking app is in English, its is also free including free ATM cards Downloading of movies, and some games w/ copyright are illegal here, a German bro was fined 13,000 euros for movies download... imagine they fine you that one, you don die be that!!
