Sambo hurriedly leaves his daughters' wedding cremony. The wedding fatiha of the two daughters of Vice President Namadi Sambo started on a colourful note yesterday in Kaduna and would have gone down in history as memorial for the couples, their parents and well-wishers but for one sad incident: A row between two Islamic leaders over a particular prayer. In the rowdiness that took the shine off the event as the followers of the Islamic clerics engaged in a shouting match, security details hurriedly took Sambo out of the venue of the ceremony. Trouble started at the famous Sultan Bello Mosque, Kaduna venue of the event when after conducting all the formalities for a wedding fatiha, two respected Islamic clerics, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi and Dr. Ahmed Gumi were asked to offer a special prayer for the couples. Sheik Dahiru Bauchi started by reciting Salatil Fati and ends it with the same Salatil Fati according to his belief. When Dr. Gumi took the microphone, he said “Malam Dahiru Bauchi ought not to recite Salatil Fati in this Sultan Bello Mosque, since we have different views and understanding on the suplication.” His statement stirred a row between their followers, a development that made the guests including the vice president to immediately rush out to their vehicles and left the venue. In a reaction, Sheik Umaru Sanda, one of the lieutenants of the Sheik Bauchi said they were not happy with the conduct of Dr. Gumi and advised him to guard against such utterances, especially in the public. Similarly, Sheik Yusuf Sambo Rigachikum, said the open confrontation was unnecessary, especially when the two Islamic sects headed by Gumi and Bauchi should have used the wedding of the VP’s daughters to end the age-long rivalry. The wedding fatiha was contracted amidst tight security in and around the mosque. One of the vice president’s daughters, Huwaila Sambo was married to Muktar Gambo Ruma, who paid N50, 000 as bride price, while Auwal Abdurrahman, who wedded Aisha Sambo paid N250,000 and five cows, which was received by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who stood as the father of the brides." |

After six months in detention John Alaku Akpabu, the 39- year-old man who was arrested at the Radio House in Abuja, on May 21, with a bag containing canisters of teargas and ammunition, is back into the warm embrace of his family and residents of Gora in Karshi, Nasarawa State. Akpabu was arrested by police at the gate of Radio House while a news conference was in progress at the premises with three ministers in attendance. He stopped for a search that revealed the suspicious content and subsequently held as a suspect with intent to bomb the building which houses two ministers and government’s Capital FM station. Police interrogation led them to Gora for a house search the very next day, Tuesday, May 22. He was taken to the village in handcuffs by heavily armed policemen, whose presence attracted dozens of villagers watching from a safe distance how the popular young man was being handled. The police also interrogated his wife, Janet at the hovel which is home to a young family of six. When our reporter visited, not many residents could voluntee information leading to Akpabu’s residence. One resident, who had the courage to do that, had to first extract assurances that his identity must be concealed. Six months later, Daily Trust returned to Gora to find a different mood. Acting as if new to Gora, our reporter made several inquiries, and villagers were too eager to point to the direction of the house where Apkabu lives with his wife and four children. Others also volunteered to lead the way. They spoke of him like some characters in epic movie. When our reporter met with Apkabu in front of his makeshift one-room apartment, he related his experience at Radio House gate; his detention at the most dreaded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and Kuje Prison in the FCT as well as his first two weeks in Gora, after the High Court in Gwagwalada had granted him bail. “It was one policeman that stopped me”, he said, giving details of how the officer later directed him to take the items contained in his bag to any nearby police station, instead of Radio House since he claimed they belonged to his late elder brother who died in service in Bayelsa State. But he said a second policeman argued with the first and insisted that their superior officer must hear the case. “It was at that time that private security men attached to Radio House heard of it and began calling newsmen. One of them even started briefing journalists without knowing the details,” Apkabu said. “I was then dragged into a vehicle and taken to the command headquarters where the police commissioner was waiting,” he added. Akpabu had told the police that he was heading to Capital FM, to seek air time to speak on a popular programme, “Lean on Me,” where he intended to call attention to his late brother’s unpaid entitlement. Akpabu said he and his brother’s widow and children had made several visits, seeking to speak and plead with police authorities at various places in respect of the unpaid entitlements without success. “And I knew if I returned the items we later found among his personal effects, the police will just lock me up on charges of possession of arms. So I decided that I will use the items to call world attention to the unpaid entitlements,” he said. He said while at the command headquarters, the police screamed at him, saying God had exposed him because he wanted to humiliate them as people who don’t pay deceased officers’ entitlements. He said he was later detained at SARS. The next day, according to the suspect, he was taken to Gora, where the whole village appeared to have been waiting. “Crowds followed from a distance, and watched as I was dragged in handcuffs. I felt like entering the ground.” “My worse moment was when I met my wife and children. They were all weeping. I began to weep too,” he said. He said he was returned to SARS for detention which lasted one month before his arraignment at Gwagwalada. But that was the last day the police prosecutor showed up in court, according to Akpabu. He said he was remanded in Kuje Prison for three months and appeared in court two more times. The bail application from his lawyer succeeded during the third appearance, but paper work dragged the process to about two weeks before he finally let off the hook. “On that day, my younger brother picked me up at the prison and drove me straight to a restaurant where I ate food.” He said both him and his brother headed to SARS where he hoped to retrieve his personal belongings including his hand held, ATM card and money. “But policemen there said they haven’t finished prosecuting the case; so they won’t return my personal items. They began shooting in the air to scare me. So we left.” And then he reached Gora at dusk into the warm embrace of his family. “My children slept in my arms that night for the first time in six months. I can’t forget that day.” But he said neighbours tiptoed into his apartment that night, cautious of being implicated in the widely reported case. “By daybreak, the whole village was heading towards my house…but only a few had the courage to come closer. It took over two weeks for them to freely visit,” he said. Akpabu, a trained scar folder now faces another ordeal. “I used to go out and look for jobs, but anywhere I appear now, I answer more questions relating to my ordeal than the job I am looking for.” He said he had two job offers since he left prison; one from a foreign firm, and another from a female lawyer. “I sat for interview at the firm for a job on their construction site, but the job never came after a security check which revealed my identities as the Radio House guy. The female lawyer even threatened to sue me if I continue to call her line”, he said. Village head of Sarkin Angwan Kalara Gora, Chief Baba Gaza, spoke to Daily Trust, saying “we are happy, and we thank God that his ordeal did not lead to any bad thing. I pray he will get out of it if he is innocent.”

The Pope is taking a leap of faith into cyberspace, and now we know where to find him. The Vatican announced earlier this month that 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI would open a Twitter account where he would share spiritual messages to a new generation of followers. A Monday press conference revealed the Pope's twitter handle will be @pontifex and he'll post his first official tweet on Dec. 12. But he isn't likely to post what he ate for breakfast or retweet your celebrity gossip. According to the Vatican, It's an attempt to reach a broader audience with religious messages, "to try and share the Good News of Christ with those seeking answers to life's key questions on their computers, iPads, tablets or smartphones."And so it seems the most powerful religious leader in the world is joining forces with one of its most powerful platforms for news, arguments, and over- sharing. The Pope will send the first Tweet himself but afterward staff will take over the typing. "Although Benedict himself won't be worrying about the technicalities and won't be seen regularly checking his account, he will be selecting the messages to tweet," the release says. Tweets will be in eight languages to start, with plans to add more in the future. The Vatican reportedly considered using the handle @ BenedictusPPXVI but ultimately it settled on the simpler term, which means 'pope' and 'bridge builder,' according to Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican. The account has nearly 200,000 followers, even though it hasn't tweeted anything yet. A flurry of tweets directed at @ pontifex has already begun, not all of which are friendly. Some users poked lighthearted fun at the Pope's hat, while others criticized the church's ideas and referenced abuse. High security measures are in place to ensure the official account isn't hacked. The Twitter company worked with the Vatican to create the account, and tweets will only be sent from one computer. Of course, the pontiff tweeted once before to worldwide amusement when he launched the Vatican news website www.news.va , writing "Dear friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI." The public can send questions to the Pope via Twitter using the hashtag #askpontifex. Cheeky questions are already circulating, such as The Guardian's query: "Will I get excommunicated if I block you on Twitter??

Common sense tells us that there are few things less appetizing than a pile of feces. So why in the world is a toilet- themed restaurant that serves dishes with names such as "green dysentery" and "diarrhea with dried droppings" so popular that it has expanded to 12 different locations? That's right, bathroom-themed restaurant chain Modern Toilet first opened in Taiwan in 2004 and has since expanded to include 12 locations in Hong Kong, China and Japan with plans to open in Malaysia, reports BuzzFeed. But don't get grossed out just yet — there is no actual feces on the menus, just a lot of items that sound like something that belongs in a toilet. At Modern Toilet, the emphasis is really on the décor. Diners sit on toilet shaped-seats (with the lids raised) and are served meals like hot pots and curries in smaller toilet bowl-shaped dishes. The tables are made of bathtubs with glass tops, and drinks come in urinal-shaped receptacles. Even dessert comes in a little toilet, and the chocolate ice cream is appropriately swirled to look like — you guessed it — poo. Would you eat at Modern Toilet? If the answer is no, there are still heaps of other extreme themed restaurants to jazz up the eating experience. At Hajime Restaurant in Thailand, googly-eyed robots deliver items and dance, while at Hospitalis restaurant in Latvia, the restaurant serves drinks in test tubes and feeds diners with surgical tools.

10. Buy shoe protectors, replace as the need arises. 9. In relation to number 10, carry an extra pair of foot wear (preferably slippers) in your bag (men inclusive). That bag should also carry the following: a small umbrella, water bottle and small chops to go. 8. Wear casual clothes to work, change into your official clothes at work, then change back to the casual clothes for the journey back home. You don’t want to look too official while trekking. 7. For the ladies, this is the time to smile from ear to earwith that ugly male colleague who drives a car and lives near your residence. 6. For the guys, buy a car before your girlfriend’s colleague starts to take her home. 5. Save the money for your gym membership, you are getting enough exercise already. 4. Start trekking groups in your office, class, church, mosque etc. After all it is said that a trek trekked with companion is no trek at all. 3. Learn how to entertain yourself in your own space. Overwhelming majority of UN member states okay resolution to upgrade Palestinian Authority's status; 138 countries vote in favor, 41 abstain and nine oppose The General Assembly on Thursday approved a resolution granting Palestine non-member observer state at the United Nations. As many as 138 countries vote in favor of the bid; 41 abstained and nine voted against it. Earlier, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the Assembly "to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine Greeted with thunderous applause, he said that Palestine has come to the UN because it believes in peace. Abbas opened his speech by commenting on Operation Pillar of Defense and denouncing Israel for killing many Palestinians and causing great damage to infrastructure in Gaza. Referring to the "Nakba" events of 1948, he claimed that Israel committed modern ethnic cleansing. The Palestinian president also rebuked Israel for failing to "save the peace process" and came out against military strikes and settler attacks. He accused Israel of colonizing Palestine and continuing its aggression Abbas claimed that the Palestinians did not come to the UN to de-legitimize "a country created here many years ago" or to further complicate the peace process, but to launch a last ditch attempt for peace. He said that the Palestinians will not accept anything less than an independent state with east Jerusalem as its capital on all territories occupied in 1967 and a solution to the refugee issue After the bid is approved, the UN will effectively recognize Palestine as a state but it will not be a UN member. Membership is granted only by the Security Council, where the US has veto power. Nevertheless, the move opens the door for the PA to file suits against Israel in the International Court of Justice. Palestinians have been celebrating across the West Bank and the Gaza Strip from noon.

There is tension in Niger Republic over alleged preference given to Nigerian oil marketers in lifting of refined petroleum products from the French-speaking West African country’s new refinery, Daily Trust investigations show. Chinese company Soraz operates the refinery which was commissioned a year ago in Zinder less than 100 kilometers north of the border with Nigeria. A liter of petrol sells officially for more than N200 in the country and the people say prices are too high compared with neigbhouring countries. Nigeriens, including civil society groups, politicians and public sector workers, allege that undue favour is being given to Nigerian companies at the expense of indigenous oil marketers who pay higher to lift products. They named AFDIN Petroleum, A. A. Rano Nigeria Limited, Oando Plc and Dangote among the five Nigerian oil firms enjoying “favour” from the Niger government. A Malian and a Burkinabe firm also enjoy such favours, they said. But some of the affected Nigerian firms said no preferential treatment was being given to them, and that they were invited by Niger authorities to invest as well as buy the surplus from the 20,000 barrels of oil refined daily. Niger’s businessmen also alleged that the loading arrangement favours Nigerian marketers whose tankers lift directly from the refinery without delays, while indigenous marketers go through the state-run company SONIDEF and end up spending up to 40 days before lifting. But authorities in Niger dismissed these claims, saying every oil marketer buys directly from SONIDEF and not from the Soraz refinery. Our correspondent, who visited SONIDEF’s main oil depot at Jagindi area of Zinder, saw hundreds of oil tankers from Nigeria parked waiting to lift oil. But locals said many indigenous oil firms get their supplies from the “favoured” Nigerian marketers as they could not secure licenses to lift oil. It was further learnt that roadside fuel sellers in Niger’s towns smuggle the product from Daura in Nigeria or get it from Maradi (in Niger) from authorized Nigerian oil marketers after lifting from Zinder. People also allege secrecy in the way the country’s oil business is run a year after the refinery was commissioned. ‘Importing corruption’ Abubakar Muhammadu Dandubai, national chairman of NPPAD, a civil society group based in Niger, accused the Muhammadou Yusouf-led government of selling Niger oil to Nigerian marketers at a give-away price. Dandubai, who was detained for eight days in Zinder prison last year for leading a protest over high petrol prices, said, “It is unfair for the Nigerien authorities to leave Niger’s oil sector in the hands of Nigerians.” “We are not against Nigerians coming to buy fuel or do business with our people but let there be a lasting arrangement that both parties can benefit without anyone complaining. Our government should be as transparent as possible and also carry our indigenous oil firms along while our brothers from Nigeria should not destroy the system through corruption,” he added. He insisted that fuel price in the country must be reduced in the interest of the common man, describing as unacceptable an argument that since the country does not need much fuel then the price should remain as it is. Muhamman Sadat Iliya Danmalam, chairman of Zinder branch of MPCR, another civil society group, expressed regret that Nigeriens are still wallowing in poverty despite the country’s oil revenue simply because of government’s “myopic thinking” that it is not everybody using fuel in the country. Danmalam, a teacher, said nobody can tell you the price at which the fuel is being sold to Nigerian marketers. “It is a common belief even in government circle that the price at which the fuel is sold to outsiders is far below the one sold to our indigenous marketers; and this is very unfair to our people,” he said. He said fuel is very expensive at petrol stations and so motorists prefer to buy it from the roadsides as it is cheaper. Vice chairman of Damagaram region Habibu Yusouf said when the refinery was commissioned last year every Nigerien was hopeful of good future but today one year after its commissioning nothing tangible has changed in the life of an ordinary Nigerien. He said there is no transparency in the sale of fuel because the commodity is sold to outsiders at a give- away rate, expressing regret that petrol sells for nearly N250 per liter in Niger. Roadside fuel, according to him, is cheaper by N20 to N25 per liter. He said Niger’s marketers go to Daura in Nigeria and Maradi to buy fuel from Nigerian oil marketers who get it cheaper from Niger’s refinery. ‘No preferential treatment’ Niger’s deputy minister of petroleum Muhammadou Lawaly Gaya denied giving preferential treatment to Nigerian oil marketers, saying the business is open to all. Gaya said Nigerians were allowed into the oil business because they have experience for well over 50 years, saying the country refines 20,000 barrels of crude oil daily but needs only 7,000 and the surplus has to be sold to their neighbours, especially Nigeria. The deputy minister denied claims that Nigerian marketers get their products directly from Soraz, saying every marketer whether indigenous or foreign gets his fuel from SONIDEF, the Niger national company. He urged Nigeriens to exercise patience as government plans to reduce the fuel price early next year. The Nigerian oil firms lifting oil from Niger denied dominating the country’s oil sector because of preferential treatment. Alhaji Ibrahim Dahiru, media consultant to AFDIN Petroleum, said AFDIN has been in the oil business for many years and it was granted approval to lift oil from Niger because it has more than 500 oil trucks, adding that Nigerian marketers will not do anything harmful to Niger. Chairman of A. A. Rano Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Auwalu Abubakar Rano, said he went into Niger oil business at the invitation of Niger authorities who he said were in Nigeria three times to seek for investors. Rano, who said he only lifts diesel from Niger, described as “highly transparent” the business transaction between marketers from Nigeria and Niger’s oil company. He added that Nigeriens should thank Nigerian investors for boosting their oil business rather than castigating them. Public affairs department of Dangote Group denied that they lift diesel from Niger, saying all the diesel they use for their factories is sourced in Nigeria. Oando’s Group Corporate Communications Department did not respond to inquiries |

1. Who brought X'tian to Africa 2. Why was X'tian brought to Africa 3. Who told Africans about Jesus 4. When was the bible written 5. Where was the bible written 6. How was the bible written 7. If bible was written 600yrs after Christ, who brought the idea to write Bible up? Who Typed it and who took them to printers? In the process how many corrections were made and who authorised the final edit? 8. God obviously didn't speak to all the authors of the bible at the same day and time to write the bible. So who did? 9. Who collected the books making up the bible from authors and why did the person choose those books? 10. Did someone miss out on other books or they simply took the ones they want to add? 11. Why don't African Christians have answers outside the Bible when asked about Christianity? Is it because they don't know any other thing to say about the foreign religion? 12. Why didn't the promoters of Christianity succeed in the Arab world? 13. Why is it that everything the promoters of the bible told Africans not to do, is what they are doing? Gay, science, racism, question the bible, etc. 14. Is it true that Africa is 200yrs behind? And they know we will never be able to question these things? So they inserted it in the bible that you shouldn't question them? 15. Before Jesus was introduced 2100yrs ago there was life in Africa, why are all black men in the Bible Slaves? None was king or rich? |
