President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday approved the appointment of Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa As the new Acting President Of The Court Of Appeal. This follows the expiration Of tenure and retirement of the Acting PCA, Justice Dalhatu Adamu. Adamu was appointed Acting PCA on August 22, 2011 following the crisis of confidence between then PCA, Justice Isa Salami, and then Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu. The situation led to Salami’s suspension on August 18, 2011. Jonathan reappointed Adamu after his initial six- month term expired although the National Judicial Council had declared this as illegal.Jonathan and the NJC have failed to recall Salami on the grounds that there are some suits pending on his suspension. The Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Justice Alooma Mukthar will on Friday swear Bulkachuwa in. |
Many have heard about this match. Some think it’s an urban legend. Some think it’s only a joke. But only few know the truth. A long time ago, few months after the endof the Nigeria- Biafra war, the Military Governor of Lagos decided to stage an exhibition match at the then glorious National Stadium Lagos. He thought it would be a special way of celebrating Nigeria’s victory in the war, a way of helping Lagosians to forget the sad bloody years that had just passed. He wanted to stage the match between Nigeria & Ghana but was advised against it. His advisers reminded him how Ghana trashed Nigeria 3- Nil at the 1960 Independence Match, that another loss to Ghana might defeat the purpose of the exhibition match. His advisers suggested that they choose a team that would be very easy to beat. Brig Gen Mobolaji Johnson agreed. Ethiopia was considered. Zimbabwe was considered. India wasconsidered. USA was considered. And Indiawas chosen. He & hisadvisers believed that India would be a walkover. But had heknown what would happen he might have chosen Brazil. Yes, Brazil were the reigning world champions at the timebut… Oh, had he known. India agreed to play the exhibition match with Nigeria. In fact, they were overjoyed. Nigeria was one of the best teams in Africa. And they had never played with an African team before. What more! They were most overjoyedthat Nigeria had agreed to their threespecial conditions. What were these conditions? Well, on that fateful day, a bright Saturday afternoon on August 15th, 1970, the National Stadium Lagos was filled with excited spectators. That wasCondition No. 1, that the match be played on India’s Independence Day. As the players of Nigeria & India came into the pitch, spectators screamedwith more excitementas they saw that all the twenty-two players were barefooted. That wasCondition No. 2. (Remember that India had withdrawn from the 1950 World Cup because they weren’t allowed to play barefooted.) Priiii… Referee Mohamed Touati blewhis whistle to begin the game. (The Tunisian referee hadbeen suspended by FIFA earlier that yearbut had accepted to officiate this special match.) Indian forward Amer Al-Amer made the first pass. And before anyone could say “Bosnia-Herzego vina”, one Majed Suleman fired the ball high into the air towards the Nigerian post. The gaint of a Nigerian keeper, Emmanuel Okala, dived to the right while the ball dropped into the left side of the net. Gooooaaal!!! 3-0. That was Condition No. 3, that each goal scored by India would be counted as 3points while each byNigeria would be 1 as usual. (Nigeria agreed because theybelieved that India could never score. Or at least couldn’t score more than one goal.) Emmanuel was looking confused. He was very sure he had dived towards the ball. Every other person thought he’d deliberately let the Indians score just to spice up the game. Meanwhile, India’s fan club was going wild with jubilation. Priii… The Nigerian forwards Sunday Atuma & Thompson Usiyen passed. As Thompson passed toPaul Hamilton, he wassurprised when he saw India’s Faisal Al-Dakheel with the ball. Faisal quickly shot the ball into the air towards Nigeria’spost. Goooal! 6-0. Thompson was so confused. He could have sworn it was Paul his teammate hehad passed to. Priii… Sunday Atuma passed into the Nigerian half. Alloysius Atuegbu passed to Haruna Ilerika. Haruna made a long pass into the Indian half to Samuel Okoye. He was shocked when he saw the ball in the legs of Abdullah Al- Shemmari. Haruna wiped his eyes in disbelief. Too late! Abdullah shot the ballinto the air. Goal! 9-0. Three goals in barely six minutes? Nigerian spectators were wondering whatwas happening. Priii… Goal! 12-0. Yusuf Al- Suwayed. 15-0. Amer Al- Amer. 18-0. Majed Suleman’s second goal. 21-0. AbdulazizAl- Bul oushi. 24-0. Majed’s hat- trick. 27-0. Faisal Al-Dakheel’s second goal. 30-0. Waleed Al- Mubarak. At the twentieth minute, Nigeria’s Paul Hamilton ran with the ball all the way to India’s box-18. But as he raised his leg to shoot, he slipped& fell. India’s defender Mahboub Jumaa easily took the ball as Paul lay on the ground moaning like a baby. That was the nearest Nigeria had gotten to the Indian post so far. Twenty-five minutes later & eight goals more, the score stood at 54-0. Some spectators angrily left the stadium evenbefore the half-time whistle. Others waited patiently, hoping that Nigeria would revenge in the2nd half. “Boys, what the hell is happening out there?!” Coach JorgePenna was furious. “You’re the damn captain, answer me!!”he was shouting at Emmanuel Okala. Emmanuel was speechless. He didn’tknow what to say. “Co-co-coach…” Godwin Achebe began“I think I know what’s happening sir” The coach was glaring at him now. “Those Indians dey use juju. They’re using ma-magic.” “Yes! Yes!” his teammates echoed & nodded & murmured amongst themselves. “Shut up you fools!! Magic my foot!!! There is no magic in football!” |

Arsenal VS Spartak Moscow (1925) Fog was covering the pitch (White Hart lane), and it was too hard to see, impossible to play a match. But the ref refused to cancel the match, because the other team came all the way from Russia... Anyway the match was a total mess, an Arsenal player was sent off because he kept arguing with the ref,he came back in to the match later and the ref didn't notice him...Spartak made a change, but the subbed player didn't go off the pitch, the match continued this way and the ref wasn't able to see anything... At a moment in that match, Spartak played with 15 players...Arsen al players started to feel something was wrong, but nobody was able to count the players... And the real problem was when the arsenal keeper got injured because his head smashed into the post while trying to save a ball... the keeper went out of the game, and a fan jumped there instead of him ,and nobody noticed |
the guy holding the lady's bottom is the real groom/husband. He must have pushed her forward a bit unknowingly with the photographer taking the pics. A closer look at the picture shows the other guy holding one of the bride's maid waist is the best man. |
Teacher: Why didn’t you study? Akpors: A year has 365 days for you to study. After taking away 52 Sundays, there are only 313 days left. There are 50 days in the summer that is way too hot to work so there are only 263 days left. We sleep 8 hours a day, in a year, that counts up to 122 days so now we're left with 141 days. If we fooled around for only 1 hour a day, 15 days are gone, so we are left with 126 days. We spend 2 hours eating each day, 30 days are used in this way in the year, and we are left with 96 days in our year. We spend 1 hour a day speaking to friends and family, that takes away 15 days more and we are left with 81 days. Exams and tests take up atleast 35 days in your year; hence you are only left with 46 days. Taking off approximately 40 days of holidays, you are only left with 6 days. Say you are sick for a minimum of 3 days; you're left with 3 days in the year to study! Let's say you only go out for 2 days... You're left with 1 day. But that 1 day is your birthday. That's why I did not study. |
As his country suffers air strikes and an imminent ground invasion from Israel, a Palestinian was beheaded in Saudi Arabia on Monday after being convicted of forming a gang to carry out robberies in the kingdom, the interior ministry said. Reaction from less conservative countries around the world has brought up several questions, one of which is how beheading a man is a suitable punishment for forming a gang. Reports say 67 people have already been beheaded this year. “Mohammad Al Khalili formed a gang with others that carries out thefts, burglaries, and robbery against homes,” said the statement carried by the official SPA news agency. The execution, in the port city of Jeddah, brings to 67 the number of people put to death in Saudi Arabia so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on official reports. Amnesty International says 79 people were executed in the conservative kingdom last year. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Sharia.

A Dubai watchman who tried to end his life by drinking a carbonated beverage in which he mixed insecticide has admitted that his wife’s sudden death had led him to his second failed suicide attempt within a year. Prosecutors charged the 30-year-old Indian national, with attempting suicide by consuming a soft drink in which he had emptied a canister of insecticide. The defendant, who was also accused of consuming liquor, confessed to the charges. “Yes I am guilty. I mixed Pif Paf with my Pepsi and drank it in an attempt to end my life,” he told the Dubai Misdemeanour Court on Sunday. According to records, the suspect’s wife died two years ago and his friends had earlier intervened just in time to prevent him from jumping off a building in Bur Dubai in 2011. The charges sheet read that the suspect shook the insecticide canister well to ensure he would not survive the suicide attempt. Swift medical intervention was his saving grace as he spent nearly two months in hospital. The suspect told prosecutors that he decided to end his life because couldn’t stop thinking of his wife and was unable to get over her death. “I drank liquor every time I felt low and memories of my wife returned. On the day of the incident, I was feeling very unhappy and miserable. I drank whisky before I purchased the Pif Paf and bottle of Pepsi. Then I mixed both bottles and drank it till the last drop. Shortly after that I started vomiting… I vomited until I fell unconscious. No one encouraged me to commit suicide… and that was my second time. A year ago my friends stopped me from jumping off the roof,” he said. An Emirati policeman testified that the defendant was in a stable condition when he questioned him in his hospital bed. “He admitted to me that he constantly thinks of his late wife. He also confessed that he failed to commit suicide earlier,” the policeman said. Presiding Judge Abdul Aziz Mohammad will hear the defence counsel on December 17. |

There is controversy surrounding the killing of General Shuwa on Friday, 2nd November, 2012. Can you tell us what actually happened on that day? I spoke to him on Wednesday, 31st October, 2012. I told him that I have had enough here in Nigeria and I would like to go back to the US. He told me that actually he had done his best to make me settle here but it appears to be a very difficult situation and therefore said I should go back. All the time, the General will call and ask of my whereabouts and my welfare. On Friday, he went outside his house and sent for a shaving razor blade. He sent one Adam to buy it for him and he then sat on a chair outside the house, waiting for the razor blade. At that very time, some boys, our relatives were sitting together with him as he was waiting for the arrival of the razor blade. Then there was a gentleman, a passerby that saw the General sitting outside. He therefore approached him in order to offer Fatiha (a tradition in Borno whereby indigents recite some verses of the Quran in front of affluent people and get a little money in return). As he was reciting the Fatiha, three armed men appeared and took position, two on the western side of the General and one on the eastern side, facing the soldiers that were guarding the General. They were all armed with AK 47 rifles. There was a huge tree close to where the General was sitting and a fountain of water under it. As the two armed men approached him, they began chanting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) and started shooting. One irony is that whenever the General was going out of his house, he went with a gun. He always sat with a gun and goes everywhere with a gun. However, on that very day and hour, he did not go out with the gun. Instead, he locked the door of the room where the gun was and put the key in his pocket and went outside. As the two men were chanting Allahu Akbar and shooting, the passerby that was reciting Fatima attempted to stand up but the gunmen shot him and he collapsed. Then the General said a word in Shuwa Arab, “Hou” roughly translated as “What?” in English language. Then one of the men looked at the General and shot him and was trying to refill the Ak47 rifle again. That was when the General stood up and put his hand inside his pocket, thinking that he will bring out his gun but instead, brought out the keys to his room. On realizing this, he attempted to grab the man that shot him. When the other gunman saw what the General was trying to do, he shot his two arms. Whose arms? The General’s arms and one of the bullets penetrated his ribs and hit the heart directly. Was the General able to grab one of them? No, he was not. He was making attempt to catch one of them when the other one shot him in the chest, precisely at the epical line where the heart lies. And when he shot the heart, the General fell and both of them continued shooting him. They pushed him with their legs and confirmed that he was dead. They then started shouting and jubilating and entered their tricycle. Before then, the General’s most senior wife was trying to go out of the house when she heard gunshots. As she peeped outside, she saw her husband and the passerby on ground. She wanted to go and embrace him but was prevented [by relatives]. This is when the third gunman who was across the other part of the road started shooting at her but she was very lucky, the bullets did not hit her. She later went and embraced her dead husband. Again, when one of the boys that was sitting outside found out that the General was not with his gun, he rushed into the house in order to get the gun but found out that the door of the parlour was locked and he could not get in. When you go outside this house (General Shuwa’s house) you will find out that there is an umbrella…a tent where the General normally sits and you will see the many holes created by bullets. Were there no military guards in the house? There were about eight or ten soldiers guarding this house (the General’s house). But where were they when the gunmen came? They were right there at their post in front of the house but none of them could show any resistance or stand and make any effort. There was another girl who is also our relation. She was in the General’s second house which was close by. She told me that when the shooting was going on, she had wanted to go out and grab one of the gunmen, exactly what the General’s wife also wanted to do. They wanted to at least obstruct the gunmen but they were grabbed by other relatives. Unfortunately, the soldiers outside could not do anything. If any of the soldiers had made any shooting, I think the life of the General could have been saved. And apart from the soldiers that had been stationed in the house, there were other soldiers at the cross section of the street. Again, there are many security checkpoints that the gunmen passed through before they came to this house. There was no resistance or effort to stop the gunmen. The General has always been in Maiduguri, he has always been in this vicinity thinking that he has been protected and his life was safe. I can see that the soldiers are still guarding this house. Have they given any explanation as to why they were unable to repel the attack? Not to my knowledge but I would like to know if there is any. When the federal government delegation came from Abuja, did they ask you how the General was killed? I explained to them in detail and they were very amused that the soldiers were there but no effort was made to save the life of the General, despite the fact that the purpose of stationing them here was to protect his life. Why there was no shouting, no shooting, nothing? How can something like this happen to a war hero? Someone that spent all his life to protect this country and keep it united? I would like to know why he was killed this way before me too vanishes from this world. Are you happy that the soldiers are still stationed outside this house and do you see them as protecting the family? Look, the family is gone! Which family are they protecting again? The head of the very family has vanished. Have they (the soldiers) not received orders from the high authorities to protect him? I don’t know… may be they have some commanders that did not give them orders to protect the General. Or maybe they don’t have weapons or their weapons are inferior to that of the gunmen, I don’t know. How many soldiers were there when the gunmen came? Between seven and ten and the gunmen were three in number. They did the shooting and left. The gunmen were even screaming and laughing and jubilating. It was women that were trying to protect General. The women told me that if not because they were pulled back, they would have obstructed the shooting. His wife said she was pushed to the ground. This was what happened. Now let’s talk about his life. Who was General Mamman Shuwa? I can say General Mamman Shuwa was born as a soldier, he lived in this world as soldier and he died as a soldier. Why did you say he was born as a soldier? This is because he told me that when he was in Barewa College, one of his teachers, a white man, looked at him and also looked at General Murtala Muhammed and said the two of them have no any career that will suit them apart from military. This is what General Shuwa told me. And this is why I said he was born a soldier. Again, my mother told me that when General Shuwa was barely two years old, she took him to the local barber (Wanzami) to remove his uvular. After cutting the uvular, my mother said he did not cry at all…He did not shed tears and he was barely two years old. He was born a soldier; there is no doubt about it. He was fearless, very strict and straight forward. Where was he born? He was born in Minsharde, a village situated about 3 kilometers to Kala Balge. He attended his elementary school in Kala Balge. From there, he came to Borno Middle School. From there, I think only three of them were chosen to go to Barewa College and thereafter, he got enlisted into the Nigeria Army. General Shuwa told me that because of his height and the size of his chest, there were grievances that surrounded his joining the army…He was not tall and that was a disadvantage to him. Along the line, he went back to our village in Minsharde but later on, his admission into the army was released. But at that time, all his mates including Bisalla and Murtala were already in Ghana for the military training. He was three months late when he joined them in Ghana. This was after he was selected by the white people. In Ghana, some people told Shuwa that there was no way he could make it because he was late but he said he will give it a try even though initially he wanted to leave. He had even taken his luggage and was about leaving when Murtala and Bisalla pulled him back, insisting that he must remain and after the examinations, he told me that he was either first or second. From Ghana, they proceeded to Sandhurst in the United Kingdom for more military training and stayed there for two years. Shuwa’s father did not know where his son was. That time, I was under the custody of the General’s father and I told him that I would love to go to formal school but he said no. He said western education was not good. Two months after, the father died and that was when I entered school. |

Women will have hair, like the hump of a camel. (This hadith too, had baffled the Ulema for quite a long time till they saw current hairstyles. I believe it came into fashion about 5 years ago.)
