What kind of business do your parents do?

It all boils down to money a lot of it and being able to show that the money is tied to the business or linked to a legitimate source of income.

Firstly, IRCC knows the child is a student and is still financially dependent on the parents. If the parents are coming to Canada to visit their child and they don’t have solid financials, it doesn’t really add up.

You know when I used to talk about having at least $45,000 CAD as POF and that the money should be connected to a business or salary?

Why so high? Because the child is not a PR or citizen, and the child is not working full-time or financially established enough to be the sponsor on the application. That’s how IRCC is likely to look at it, even if the child is on a PGWP.

For a business, you want to show things like CAC documents, invoices, proof of goods sold, import/shipping documents, business licences, manufacturers’ invoices if you buy goods from a factory, contracts, or anything else that clearly connects the business to the goods or services being bought and sold and then connects that business activity to the money in the account.

This is not on your perosnally I just remember something and want to rant small allow me hahahah

When I was giving this advice about POF for a visitor visa early this year people in the visitor visa section called me names and said I didn’t know what I was doing. All that bla bla bla… Funny i got to find out most of they are agents later on anyways

They would say they knew someone in 2019/2020 who used ₦10–15 million to get a visitor visa.

At the exchange rate of ₦271.36 to C$1:

₦10,000,000 ÷ 271.36 ≈ C$36,850

₦15,000,000 ÷ 271.36 ≈ C$55,275

Then someone will come and attack me with, “But, but, but… the average Canadian doesn’t have that amount in their account.” Lie lie lie.

And anyone in Nigeria who can afford to send their child to Canada is, at the very least, likely to be middle-income or above.

You see, my words might not always sound pleasant, but one thing is for sure: this approach works out highly most of the time.

Remember when I talked about the student visa cap?

That is a major reason why a lot of people are getting rejected, and the numbers are not going to be anything like what we saw in 2023.

This might be long, but let me explain.

You see, Canada is only looking at 408,000 study permits for 2026, and this includes people who are renewing their permits too not just new applicants.

For fresh/new applicants, we are looking at around 180,000 spaces. Then you have another 49,000 or so, bringing the total to roughly 229,000 new students for 2026.

Now compare that to 2023, when Canada had 682,889 study permit holders/applications for just new applicants. You can see the difference.

That means when you are applying now, you really have to do your research and make sure your documentation is on point. Make sure your tuition is paid ( Accentance fee) and that you can clearly show where the money came from and where it went.

You are basically competing for around 229,000 spots with applicants from all over the world.

Most of the emails I get from people are about very simple things. IRCC wants to see that you can meet the basic requirements and that everything makes sense.

For example, your minimum POF should cover:

Tuition for your entire program (even if it is a 2-year program) + $23,448 for living expenses for one person + $3,000–$5,000 for miscellaneous expenses.

And, most importantly, the money needs to be traceable. You need to be able to show that you actually have the money and explain where it came from.

Because the Chinese, Filipinos, Indians, Arabs, and applicants from other countries are coming with their tuition, POF, and documentation ready and complete.

You see, once you enter the country, you realize that things are often very different from what you hear online. I might be harsh sometimes, but I have never intentionally told a lie or misled anyone.

I remembered I told the immigration officer I was like, my permit says I cannot work in strip clubs or do escorts (hookup). Like who’s gonna leave his country and come work in a strip club as a stripper the Chinese guy laughed.

I saw it on mine too, so I read about what made the government include such a statement. I found out that, back around 2011, some international students who didn’t have jobs and couldn’t find employment were reportedly working in massage parlours in Mississauga. Some were even renting units in condos and using them as hookup locations, with pimps involved and all sorts of things going on. It was really bad.

If you know Mississauga well, you probably know the famous Marilyn Monroe condos. They are near Square One and Sheridan College, and there were reports of students being involved in buying drugs and women being used for hookups. The situation became really bad, which is why you still see that restriction on study permits today.

It got so bad that the government and police had to carry out several massive raids.

That’s the reason the restriction was introduced in the first place. There are still reports of prostitution activity in some buildings, but from what I understand, it is no longer mainly students involved.

Well, the word “hard” is probably not the right word to use. Yes, GDP growth in Canada has been stagnant for years due to various BAD government policies and other economic factors, but things are difficult not necessarily as bad as they might seem.

Things have definitely become more expensive, and jobs aren’t as easy to come by as they used to be. But what else do you want to know? I don’t want to discourage anyone from coming. All I have been saying since day one is that if you’re coming, please make sure you come with a globally recognized skill set.

Before leaving Nigeria, I already had a PMP certification and a SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) certification, and they were a game changer for me...

It’s not an easy road, but you have to plan at all times and be prepared for the challenges ahead.

Good Morning Everyone,

I applied for a Canadian study permit in July and haven’t received an update yet from IRCC. My program start date at York University SCS is September 10, and I’m getting concerned about my options as well as securing my tuition deposit.

I contacted the school for clarification regarding deferrals and tuition policies, and their response is in the attached screenshot. The policy seems tricky: the second point requires submitting a deferral request before the program start date with a visa refusal letter. However, my application hasn't been refused, it's simply still processing with IRCC, so I can't cite a refusal.


Has anyone dealt with this at York SCS? What are my options here to avoid losing my fees? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since your study permit application is still processing, I would advise you to submit the deferral request before the deadline. If you don’t hear anything from IRCC by September 4th, submit the deferral request so you don’t miss the deadline...

Monday is a public holiday 7th so likely if they dont get back to you on the 4th you should send the email.

Hopefully, IRCC will give you a decision before the 4th and you won’t need to defer.....

Honestly, since your study permit has already been approved, that is a good thing. The fact that your original September admission was withdrawn because of the delay does not mean your approval is useless.

Since the school has asked you to defer and you should request for a new LOA, I would advise you to contact the school immediately and explain that your study permit has now been approved.

Also, make sure the new admission corresponds with the approval before making travel arrangements. I wouldn’t advise travelling based on the old September admission if the school has already withdrawn it.
Submit your New LOA,approval and a short LOE that the original intake was deferred because the decision came after the start date

The important thing is that you already have the study permit approval. Now you just need to make sure the school and IRCC records are properly aligned with your new intake.

Since the school asked you to defer and you need to request a new LOA, you should contact the school immediately and explain that your study permit has now been approved.

You will likely be resuming in January since that is the next available term. Just contact the school, explain the situation, and provide evidence of your study permit approval.

So when people talk about remote jobs, it’s important to understand that they can be difficult to come by, and in many cases, you still have to be physically present in the country where the company allows you to work. That’s been my experience

Yes, but not what social media is portraying. Back in 2018/2019, and even in 2021, you could apply for jobs and get one, as bad as it was, within maybe 1 to 2 months thats with background check interview and all that.

I’m talking about high-skilled, well-paying jobs in the $95,000–$120,000 range, plus bonuses and other benefits. Those jobs are not coming as quickly now, and entry-level opportunities are even harder to find... i will say bad government policies

I was lucky because I had already worked for a fintech company in Nigeria for two years before coming to Canada for school, and I started working at a Fintech bank here as well as well doing co-op/ intership helped . I’ve also worked on government software projects and several other projects.

So, yes, the job market is definitely not as easy as it was before. If you’re entering the Canadian job market now, you really need to have strong, in-demand skills with proven work record to stand out.
