The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has appealed to the FCT lawmakers in the National Assembly to champion the establishment of a special intervention fund to bolster the territory’s fiscal capacity.

Wike, who spoke at a media parley in Abuja on Monday, said such an intervention is needed because of the mounting financial burden of supporting the FCT’s extensive public service, especially following the recently implemented national minimum wage.

He emphasized that current allocations from the federation account have fallen short of covering essential salary requirements and maintenance costs.

Wike also explained his rationale for withholding some of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from Area Councils, stating it was done to address the unpaid wages and entitlements of workers at the councils.

Although he lacks direct authority to control local councils, Wike said the deduction was necessary after repeated failures to pay primary school teachers their minimum wage.

The withheld funds will go toward settling outstanding salary arrears, a move he described as aligned with public interest amid the ongoing industrial action.

While acknowledging that governance challenges cannot be resolved overnight, Wike reiterated the current administration’s commitment to good governance and sustained development.

The former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu will remove Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, once his political interest in the South-South is secured.

Lamido made this assertion while speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Tuesday night.

According to him, Tinubu appointed Wike for a specific political purpose, and once it is accomplished, the former Rivers State governor will be dismissed.

“Tinubu was looking for someone who will help him in his political interest,” Lamido said.

“The whole appointment of Wike was to make sure Tinubu secures the South-South.

“So far, he has been able to get Akwa Ibom and Edo states. Wike already has Rivers State.

“By the time Tinubu is able to secure the South-South in his own basket, Wike will become irrelevant, and he will remove him.

“He appointed Wike for a purpose, gave him an office for a purpose; by the time the purpose is no more, that’s the end of it.”

The Concerned State Chairmen of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, an umbrella body of state chairmen of the party, has rejected the new national leadership of the party led by a former Senate President, David Mark.

In a statement titled ‘Rejecting the Political Junta by Defending ADC and Nigeria’s Democracy Against Subversion’, signed by the Chairman, Amb. Elias Adokwu and the Publicity Secretary, Godwin Alaku, the chairmen described the recent takeover of the party by the opposition coalition as an “orchestrated political coup”.

DAILY POST reports that Mark was named the Interim National Chairman of the ADC after the opposition coalition adopted the party as its platform. A former governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola was named Interim National Secretary.

The development is aimed at positioning the ADC to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 election.

The opposition coalition wants to deny President Bola Tinubu a second term in office.

But the ADC state chairmen have condemned what they described as the hijack of the party by the coalition, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has already resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join the ADC.

In the statement released on Tuesday, the chairmen said the emergence of Mark and others as the leaders of the ADC is a “blatant and reckless subversion” of the party’s constitution and Nigeria’s democratic norms.

They accused the coalition of attempting an unconstitutional hijack of the ADC through manipulation and backdoor dealings.

“We unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms this desperate power grab, which represents not only an aberration of democratic norms but also a grave assault on our collective political values as a nation,” the statement said.

The chairmen further noted that the move is not a realignment of political ideology – as stated by the coalition – but a “civilian junta” seeking control outside legal and democratic processes.

Rejecting the Mark-led leadership, they made reference to a warning – “If peaceful change is not possible, violent change is inevitable” – reportedly issued by one of the coalition’s leaders during the 2011 election, as evidence of the resurfacing of a dangerous mindset in the polity.

“It is only by the grace of God that our democracy survived then, and we must not allow such reckless adventurism to thrive now,” the statement warned.

According to the ADC state chairmen, the takeover is an “insult to all those who believe in and have labored for democratic governance in Nigeria”.

They said the coalition is planning to fracture the democratic process using “selfish ambition and extra-party inducements”.

They equally emphasised the ADC’s commitment to “democratic principles, the rule of law, ideological clarity, and peaceful political engagement”, rejecting any notion that the party is a platform for “political mercenaries or ideological impostors”.

The chairmen advised the coalition to “create their own party or look elsewhere”, declaring, “The ADC is not for sale, not for hijack, and certainly not a dumping ground for discredited power brokers.”

The statement challenged leaders of the coalition to disclose their contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, questioning their “electoral value or ideological clarity”.

The Concerned State Chairmen called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to resist recognising any illegal change of leadership in the party. They also urged Nigerians and members of the civil society to monitor and resist this “creeping authoritarianism” and demand that law enforcement agencies investigate unlawful attempts to disrupt political order.

“We, the legitimate custodians of the ADC structure across all states of the federation, reject this illegitimate junta.

“We consider it our patriotic duty to defend the soul of the ADC and protect the sanctity of democratic structures in Nigeria,” the statement added.

The chairmen in the same vein dismissed what they described as baseless allegations by former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu. According to them, Nwosu’s claims are a “desperate attempt to salvage his own political reputation”.

Reuben Abati, popular media personality and former presidential spokesperson, has slammed Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, over his recent remark on a one-term presidency.

In a viral video on Monday during the Arise Television programme, Abati said Obi’s vow to do one term if elected as Nigeria’s president is a sign of desperation.

This comes as mixed reactions continue to trail Obi’s comment that he would serve only one term if elected as Nigeria’s president.

He urged Nigerians to ignore any politician with a sign of desperation.

“What I am saying is that any politician that comes to you and says that I am going to do only one term, that is a sign of desperation.

He added that Nigeria will progress when the Nigerian people put competence above religion, region, and other sentiments.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Unit of the Bayelsa State Police Command on Saturday evening recovered the corpse of missing real estate operator, Ekpeboh Richard, after days he was declared missing by his family.

His decomposing body was recovered from the forest between New NDDC Road and Otuokpoti in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

Police discovered the deceased was shot in the head in an execution-style and dumped in the bush.

A graduate of the Niger Delta University, Ekpeboh is the Vice Chairman of the Real Estate Consultants Association of Bayelsa and hails from Amassoma in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state. He is married with two kids.

He left home on July 24, 2025, and his wife became worried at around 2 a.m. when he failed to return home.

According to family sources, all calls by the worried wife to his mobile phone were left unanswered until three days later via WhatsApp chat, when he purportedly asked her not to mount unnecessary pressure on him and that he was okay.

Further prompted by the wife that she would reach out to the extended family to ask him why he abandoned the house was met by a promise to send money via POS, where the sum of N15,300 was purportedly sent to a POS agent and not her account.

The family source also revealed that he owes two persons the sums of N9 million and N3 million, respectively, within the association.

However, it was later discovered that those who abducted and killed him were the ones using his phone to chat with his worried wife.

According to some friends and colleagues of the deceased, they later reported the matter to the police and the men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), headed by CSP Bishop Elemide.

The RRS operatives, working on intelligence, youths, and an eyewitness, discovered that two young men in a blue-coloured Honda V-Boot car had dragged the deceased out and took him deep into the forest. “What we heard later were two gunshots. And the two young men scampered to their car and left.

“They also left with the deceased’s car, a Toyota Matrix.”

Police investigators discovered that there was a struggle between the deceased and his killers, with footwear discovered a few metres from where the body was discovered.

“We, the youths, assisted in recovering the body. The place he was dumped was a swamp. His head was blown off by gunshot,” one of the youths revealed.

Our correspondent gathered from sources at the Police Headquarters that the Homicide Department of the State Criminal Investigation Department have taken over the case and is already working on two leads.

“We are looking at the fact that it may be a case of business deals gone wrong with members of his Association of Real Estate Consultants, or that he may be involved in a cybercrime or money laundering deal that went wrong.”
“We will get to the root of the matter and bring the culprits to book,” a police source stated.

The agency disclosed that operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, intercepted a consignment headed to Libreville, Gabon, containing 57,420 pills of tramadol 225mg and 57 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.60kg concealed in 71 vehicle side mirrors.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted consignments of cocaine and tramadol hidden in vehicle side mirrors, lipsticks, and footwears in a string of operations that led to multiple arrests across Lagos, Abuja, and several states.

Spokesperson for the agency, Femi Babafemi, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, intercepted a consignment headed to Libreville, Gabon, containing 57,420 pills of tramadol 225mg and 57 pellets of cocaine weighing 1.60kg concealed in 71 vehicle side mirrors.

The agency noted that the shipment was seized on 19 July, leading to the arrest of cargo agent Ihekweme Osinachi Benedict. Follow-up operations resulted in the arrest of Uzochukwu Godspower Chukwurah, from whose residence an additional 11 parcels of cocaine weighing 1kg were recovered. The total haul of cocaine reached 2.60kg across 68 parcels.

In a separate case, NDLEA operatives arrested a businesswoman, Mrs Nwafor Roseann Nneka, at the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, after tracing a July 10 consignment of cocaine and phenacetine concealed in ladies’ lipsticks bound for Malabo, Equatorial Guinea

Two cargo agents were earlier arrested. While Nneka was reported to have confessed to purchasing the lipsticks used for concealment, her husband and accomplice, Remigus Nwafor, remains at large.

Elsewhere, operatives in Abuja arrested three dispatch riders—Sabo Sule, 24; Samuel Nnamdi, 28; and Idris Jibrin, 28—caught distributing 149.8 grams of Canadian Loud, a potent cannabis strain, across Gwarimpa, Jahi, and Galadimawa. Two other suspects were also apprehended on the Abaji-Gwagwalada expressway with 91.1kg of skunk.

The agency added that further arrests were recorded across several states. In Lagos, Joseph Michael was caught in Mushin with 3.3kg of Colorado, while Ibrahim Sulaiman was arrested in Yaba with 16.5 litres of skuchies. In Benue, Hussein Yusuf, 37, was nabbed at a checkpoint with 100,000 tramadol capsules. Edo operatives seized 233.5kg of skunk from a warehouse in Ekpoma and arrested William Alabi, 44.

At the Maiduguri airport in Borno, Umar Aminu, 38, was caught with 160 tramadol pills concealed in footwears. In Ogun, Yahaya Aminat Seyi was found with 7,218 pills of opioids in the Oja Odan area. In Oyo, 77.5kg of skunk was recovered from Oladeji Saka in Ibadan. In Delta, Benson Izah, 40, was arrested in Abraka with skunk, tramadol, and 14.4 litres of codeine.

In Bayelsa, Chief Emeka Opara, 52, and Onuoha Chidinma, 25, were apprehended in Amassoma with 41,705 tramadol capsules. In Kano, Bashir Gambo, 30, was caught with 61kg of skunk. Finally, in Osun, Kabiru Ayinde, 40, and Roqeeb Adekanmbi, 25, were arrested at Ile-Ogbo in Iwo with 90kg of skunk, 36.3 grams of methamphetamine, a Toyota bus, and ₦228,200 in cash.

The agency also continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign nationwide. It said activities were held in schools, religious centres, transport hubs, and royal palaces, including a visit to the Oluwo of Iwo land, Oba Abdurasheed Adewale Akanbi.

Commending officers across the MMIA, MBIAM, FCT, and various state commands, NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), urged continued commitment to a balanced approach in tackling drug trafficking and abuse.

The statement further revealed that the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) delivered relief materials such as food, medical supplies, and temporary shelter to displaced families.

It also emphasized that boats used during the rescue operations were state-owned, underlining the government’s preparedness for such emergencies.

Citing previous flood incidents, the government recalled its quick response to flooding in Borno State last year, during which it provided cash and logistical support—an effort it said underscores its consistent commitment to emergency response.

On the abandoned Chochi flood-control project, the statement clarified that the project was neither initiated nor abandoned by the Fintiri administration. It urged the public to verify facts before assigning blame.

The decomposing body of a 16-year-old boy, Lawal Wahab, was discovered with mutilated organs along the Igbile-Ijebu axis of the Old Express Road in Ogun State.

The Guardian learned that the teenager, who had been living with his grandmother, was declared missing by his father, Mr. Lawal Olumide. Tragically, his body was discovered on 23 July 2025, with vital organs removed.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Saturday.

Odutola explained that following the discovery of Wahab’s corpse, detectives had launched a full-scale investigation into the gruesome murder.

“Preliminary examination revealed that the victim’s head, wrists, heart, and genitals were removed—suggesting he may have been killed for ritual purposes,” she said.

According to her, two suspects—Salawu Omikansola (25) and Serefusi Agemo (age not disclosed)—have been arrested in connection with the killing, while others involved are currently on the run.

The PPRO disclosed that the victim had been buried according to Islamic rites and that the case file, along with recovered exhibits, had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, for discreet investigation.

In a separate development, Odutola said an arrest of 22 suspected Aiye cult members, including two soldiers, was made possible through credible intelligence indicating that the group had converged at the Hilton Hotel.

She noted that a joint tactical team—comprising operatives from Odeda Division, Aregbe Division, the Anti-Cultism Unit, and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, led by SP Adejoh Israel—stormed the location at about 8:20 p.m. on July 25, 2025.

Items recovered from the scene included one cut-to-size locally made firearm, a UTC axe, and several blue berets commonly associated with the Aiye cult group.

“The suspects have been transferred to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the SCID in Eleweran for further investigation. No casualties were recorded during the operation,” she added.

“The Ogun State Police Command is committed to flushing out criminal elements threatening public peace,” Odutola stated, noting that the raid was part of a broader clampdown on cult-related violence in the state.

Omo Obi 2027 bid is almost gone my humble conclusion is for obi to lobby for the ADC vice presidential roles and run with atiku as simple as ABC. Make he no listen to any motivational speaker. To be number 2 man for Nigeria no be teeth. Even goodluck step down from his role as Governor as bayelsa to accept vp ticket so obi half bread is better than non.
