The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has threatened to file a ‘defamation suit’ against the Kano State deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo over his accusation in the ongoing Emirship tussle in Kano. Gwarzo, in a short video interview at the Emir’s palace in Gidan Rumfa on Saturday, had accused the NSA of facilitating the return of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, after he (Bayero) was deposed from the position. He said, “The National Security Adviser gave two jets to bring the dethroned emir to Kano and to bring him to the place. We have not understood their intention.” However, despite denying the allegation on Saturday through his spokesperson, Zakari Mijinyawa, the NSA, in a letter as quoted by Daily Trust, through his lawyers, Aliyu & Musa Chambers, demanded an apology from Gwarzo. The lawyers noted that while Ribadu had never been accused of any wrongdoing, he had been receiving a “barrage of telephone calls both within and outside Nigeria” over the “false accusation.” The letter read partly, “We act as solicitors to Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who presently occupies the exalted position of the National Security Adviser (“our client”) and on whose instruction we write this letter. “The attention of our client was drawn to a video clip being shared on different social media platforms wherein you granted an interview at Emir’s Palace in Kano on Saturday, the 25th day of May 2024, in a very calm atmosphere, and without any provocation whatsoever, falsely accusing our client of using his office to kill the people of Kano State and maim their properties. In the clip, you were shown to be talking in Hausa. “Your false accusations against our client portraying his office as an appendage of a political party and a willing tool to cause chaos in Kano is false and done with the intention of damaging the hard-earned reputation of our client in the eyes of the right-thinking members of the society and indeed it has succeeded in doing so.” The NSA’s lawyers stated that the deputy governor should provide substantial evidence to back his claims but without such, should, within 24 hours, retract his accusation and tender a public apology. It added that failure to do so, their client – Ribadu, would be “compelled to seek redress in a court of law.” The letter read further, “In all the places he has served, our client has never been accused of any wrongdoing. Given this illustrious background, it is inconceivable that someone would harbour the thought that our client would descend his exalted office so low as to interfere in the local tussle of the Kano Emirate. “The wide coverage you gave your interview has caused serious embarrassment to our client and his family. Since the publication, our client has been receiving a barrage of telephone calls both within and outside Nigeria from friends and associates who felt disappointed in him because of the false allegation from a person occupying the office of Deputy Governor of Kano State. Our client and his office take your allegations seriously and by this letter, our client is demanding that you provide irrefutable evidence to substantiate your claims. “If you have no proof, our client demands you to within 24 hours: retract the libellous allegation in a similar manner you made it as well as give it wide media circulation” and “issue a public apology in five National dailies with wide national coverage and on popular online platforms. Note that if you fail to do so, our client will be compelled to seek redress in a court of law.” The claim to the throne of the Kano Emir, in the past few days, has gained momentum among concerned citizens and stakeholders nationwide. The former governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje had dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi II (then as the 14th Emir) in 2020 after a fallout between the duo. He then appointed Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano, to succeed Sanusi. Afterwards, the Emirate was divided into five, including Kano. However, incumbent governor, Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law. In effect, this repealed the 2019 version of the Ganduje administration that divided the ancient Kano Emirate into five. Hence, the reinstatement of Sanusi on Friday at the Government House in Kano as the 16th Emir, marking his return four years after he was dethroned. Yusuf had directed all the five Emirs, including Bayero, to hand over to his deputy, Gwarzo, who is also the Commissioner of Chieftaincy Affairs. https://punchng.com/kano-emir-ribadu-threatens-to-sue-kano-dep-gov-for-defamation/ |

Security agents on Saturday said they won’t arrest deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero as ordered by Governor Abba Yusuf. The Governor, in a statement by his Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Tofa, ordered the arrest of Bayero, accusing him of “creating tension in the state.” “The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the Governor,” Yusuf said. But the Commissioner of Police in Kano, Mohammed Usain Gumel, who addressed newsmen at the Command Headquarters, said the police and all security agencies in the state won’t carry out the order. He said they were obeying the court order that restrained the State Government from enforcing the new law that reinstated Lamido Sanusi as 16th Emir of Kano. With him at the briefing were: ML Falala (NSCDC); MA Sadiq (Army Commander); IS Abdullahi (Fed Road Safety Corps) and Sulaimam of the Correctional Centre, among other heads of security agencies. Gumel said: “The Police Command is expressly obeying the Court Order with SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024 Dated 23rd May, 2024 issued by the Federal High Court sitting in Kano alongside ail Law Enforcement agents in the State. “Therefore, we are calling on members of the public to know that the Police in the State is working together with the military and other security agencies and are with full capacity for providing the adequate security to everyone as we are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria “No doubt, the law abiding people of Kano State are known for a revered cultural heritage and respect for constituted authorities and in this regard, advised to remain calm, patient, and to keep cooperating with security agencies as the matter described will be addressed by the Court on the 3rd of June 2024. “Let me also remind you that the position of the law is very clear as whoever, under whatever guise is found to be planning to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the State or feel that he she can jeopardize the existing security settings in the State will be arrested and made to face full wrath of the law. “Therefore, as the Police Command is leading other security agencies to sustain the peace and peaceful coexistence for overriding interests, miscreants should stay clear of violence in all its ramifications and should not take advantage or hijack the current situation to launch unprovoked attack on people, property and infrastructure of the State. Any person found with such tendency will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law of the land “By and large, the combined security agencies in the State have set out all machinery in place to ensure no breakdown of law and order as the safety and security of all the inhabitants in the State remain sacrosanct. But in a swift reaction, Kano Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, said there was nothing anybody could do to change Sanusi’s reinstatement. Gwarzo spoke to reporters at palace of the Emir where Sanusi has been moved to. He said if the police had received court order and were obeying it, the State Government did not. He said: “When we asked who gave the court order, they said Justice Mohammed Liman and asked: the judge who is in America?” The Deputy Governor accused the police of escorting Bayero back into the State, saying that the State Government was doing everything possible to avoid bloodshed. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa state has commended President Bola Tinubu for hard policies intended to reposition Nigeria for growth. Fintiri told newsmen in Yola that as unpopular as fuel subsidy removal initiated by the Tinubu government has been, the policy is necessary to make Nigerians sit up and be productive. The governor, in a casual conversation with members of the state chapter of Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who visited him at the Government House in Dougire, said fuel subsidy and other forms of subsidy would not help real progress. “Let’s just pray that these bold policies of the federal government yield desired effects because we need them,” he said, adding that such policies are the sorts of change that Nigeria needs. “We can’t continue to live on subsidy. We’ve got to face real-life situations and be productive. It’s productivity that will help us,” he stressed. Fintiri, recalling the criticism he faces as the Adamawa State governor, particularly the recent case of pulling down the famous Jimeta Shopping Complex to give room for a remodelled bigger version, said attempts at change are always resisted and challenged. He advised Nigerians to believe in leaders as meaning the best for them and giving the necessary support for the envisaged change to be actualized. https://thenationonlineng.net/fintiri-hails-tinubu-says-rebuilding-nigeria-requires-bold-policies/ |
*The women affairs minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has extended scholarships and gifts to 100 orphaned girls in Niger state *The minister had kicked against the wedding citing concerns about the girls' welfare and consent *Kennedy-Ohanenye also petitioned the Inspector General of Police and filed a lawsuit to halt the controversial mass wedding before finally supporting it FCT, Abuja - The minister of women affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, says she has awarded scholarships and distributed various gifts to 100 orphaned girls in Niger state before their mass wedding which is sponsored by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji. The women affairs minister had expressed opposition to the mass wedding, citing it as a violation of the Child Rights Act. She addressed a press conference in Abuja, on Thursday, May 23, mentioning that she had petitioned the Inspector General of Police to halt the wedding and filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the Speaker proceeding with the event, The Punch reported. The speaker, however, criticised the minister for interfering in a religious and cultural matter beyond her comprehension, arguing that she acted without attempting to grasp the challenges faced by the girls, justifying the need for sponsored weddings. Additionally, he garnered support from the Niger State Council of Imams and the Muslim Rights Concern, cautioning the minister to refrain from involvement in the planned mass wedding, which they asserted should proceed as planned. Niger mass wedding: Minister makes donation Prior to the mass wedding, the minister, represented by her Special Assistant on Private Sector, Adaji Usman, visited Niger state to disclose scholarships and distribute various items, including wrappers and food supplies, to the 100 young girls. The distribution took place at the palace of the Emir of Kontagora, Mohammed Muazu. Through Usman, the minister provided 10 Point of Sale machines, 100 wrappers, and 350 bags of 10kg rice. Furthermore, she offered a scholarship up to university level for any girl interested in pursuing education. Additionally, the Emir of Kontagora pledged to gift each girl a sewing machine. She said: “Every parent will want to marry out her wards if they attain the right age for marriage. The initial opposition to the planned marriage was misunderstood, hence the media war between my office and the Speaker’s.” Expressing gratitude to the speaker for his handling of the matter, the minister assured that diligent monitoring would be conducted to ensure the empowerment scheme's objectives are upheld in the homes of the girls' respective husbands. In his statement, the speaker lamented the politicisation of the noble intention to support the marriage of the 100 girls. He said: “It was pure politics from my constituency. They misinformed the minister that I am playing politics with the lives of the children by forcing them into marriage." In his remarks, the Emir of Kontagora thanked God for the peaceful resolution of the matter. Lawsuit withdrawn against Niger speaker Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the minister for women's affairs announced the withdrawal of the suit challenging the speaker of Niger state from marrying off 100 orphans in his constituency. The minister stated that her ministry was in discussions with the speaker and traditional rulers in the state to determine the age range of the orphans. She also revealed that her ministry would now focus on supporting women and girls affected by the security challenges in the state. https://www.legit.ng/nigeria/1593971-niger-mass-wedding-receives-boost-women-minister-throws-support-initiative-details-emerge/ |
Renowned Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has expressed strong views against the suitability of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to lead Nigeria. In a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, Soyinka noted the behaviour of Obi’s supporters, known as ‘Obidients’, during the 2023 general elections as a key indicator of his unfitness for leadership. Soyinka criticised Obi for not curbing his supporters’ aggressive online behaviour towards those with opposing views, suggesting this failure demonstrates a lack of leadership capability. The 89-year-old playwright and activists also accused Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, of encouraging these attacks against dissenting voices, including himself. Soyinka further argued that Obi’s actions and the conduct of his followers showed a lack of readiness to lead a diverse and complex society like Nigeria, insisting that the former Anambra governor was in control of internet trolls prior to the 2023 election. He said, “I hope for the sake of the nation that he doesn’t express interest in the next election because for me as a leader if there was any proof that he was unfit to lead that country, it’s in the conduct which he encouraged among his followers. I know for a fact, and I can give you an instance that proves that he was in control of those forces. “But it is for me a sad phenomenon, especially for those who want to lead a multi-texture society, different religions, different ethnic groups, different world views and who actually want to preside over sub-groups as one, it means that have already declared themselves incompetent to lead such entity and that’s it.” The Nobel Laureate further expressed his disappointment at Obi’s honesty and transparency, indicating that such behaviour casts doubt on his leadership qualities. Soyinka recounted Obi’s first visit to him during the months leading to the presidential election, stressing that the LP candidate’s public statements contradicted the events at that meeting. He said, “It’s simply because when he first came to visit me, you know, he did come at one time. And I watched him. I watched his actions and body language. It seemed to be very conciliatory. “I remember the moment when he took out his (mobile device) after he made a statement like ‘Oh don’t worry. You don’t have anything to worry about these people. He was talking about ‘Obidients’. I remember he took out his phone, and he typed a message there. I was watching him very closely, I didn’t say a thing. And after that, everything seemed to be nice and cosy. “And I saw and I read his statement about that meeting afterwards. The statement was a contrast to what actually happened, what we discussed, and I mentioned it in my response. It was a misrepresentation of what happened, and I made sure that I put a statement out saying ‘No, I’m sorry, this is not what was said. This language never came into it”. https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/national/peter-obi-unfit-to-lead-nigeria-soyinka/ |

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has declared a couple, Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade (alias Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun) and Rashidat Ayinke Owoalade (alias Bolarinwa Rashidat Ayinke), wanted over dealing with illegal substances. NDLEA said the development followed the arrest of four members of the syndicate in Lagos where a Sports Utility Vehicle was recovered and two houses already traced to them sealed for forfeiture to the federal government. This was made known in a statement by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, on Sunday. Babafemi said that two members of the syndicate: Imran Taofeek Olalekan and Ishola Isiaka Olalekan were arrested on April 3, 2024 following their bid to export 3.40kg cocaine on a Qatar Airlines flight going to Oman through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos. According to him, while Imran was the courier conveying the drug consignment to Oman, Ishola recruited him for the head of the cartel, which investigation has now revealed to be Alhaji Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade whose Indian residence permit bears Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun based in India. He stated that efforts to dismantle his network in Nigeria paid off after five weeks of surveillance and follow up operations when another member of the syndicate, Hamed Abimbola Saheed, who works directly with the baron was arrested on Tuesday 14th May at Abule Egba area of Lagos., adding that “it was indeed Saheed who lodged Imran in a hotel a day before his aborted trip to Oman and equally dropped him and Ishola at the Lagos airport the day they were arrested.” “During a search of Hamed house, NDLEA operatives recovered some phenacetine, a cutting agent for Cocaine, weighing 900 grams. He confessed that the recovered substance was what was left of the consignment Imran was taking to Oman the day he was arrested. “His arrest led to a follow up operation at the home of the Owoalade couple at 20 Eyiaro street, Ogudu Orioke, Lagos where another suspect was arrested and a new model Toyota RAV4 SUV marked FKJ-773 JJ belonging to Rashidat and additional 400 grams of Cocaine recovered in addition to already prepared suitcases to be used for illicit drug concealment, digital weighing scales and other paraphernalia,” Babafemi said. In the same vein, Babafemi announced that the NDLEA officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations, DOGI, attached to a courier firm in Lagos, on Wednesday 15th May intercepted two parcels containing Cocaine and Amphetamine concealed in steel bolts and shea butter. Babafemi said while the cocaine weighing 587 grams, was concealed in eight steel bolt screws going to China, the Amphetamine consignment packed in vape pens and hidden in shea butter was going to the United Kingdom. He also announced that an attempt by Emeka Nwadiaro (a.k.a Mega) to export 3.6kg Loud, a strain of cannabis concealed in 36 water flasks to Dubai, UAE was also thwarted at a logistic company in Port Harcourt, Rivers state on Thursday 16th May while a swift follow up operation led to the arrest of the owner of the consignment, Emeka Nwadiaro in Onitsha, Anambra state same day. Announcing further interceptions and seizures made by the anti-narcotic agency, Babafemi disclosed that NDLEA operatives in Lagos intercepted a mercedes benz bus loaded with 840kg cannabis and arrested the driver, Samuel Henry, at Olojo in Ojo LGA, Lagos, another suspect, Lawal Adam was nabbed along Otukpo road, Aliade, Benue state on Friday 17th May with 75,000 pills of opioids including tramadol and exol-5. “Two suspects: Olisa Etisi, 32, and Jonathan Umeh, 25, were arrested along Owerri – Onitsha road, Imo state following the discovery by NDLEA operatives of a big gas cyclinder used to conceal six blocks of Loud, a strain of cannabis weighing 3.85kg. In Borno state, 70-year-old Adamu Mohammed was arrested at Mbulamel, Biu LGA on Thursday 16th May with 2kg cannabis and 33.55grams of diazepam, while Gaddafi Sani, 27, was arrested with 30 kilograms of cannabis along Abuja-Kaduna road, Kaduna,” he said. In Yobe state, a consignment of 91.1kg opioids and 13kg cannabis going to Maiduguri, Borno state, was recovered from hidden compartments of a petrol tanker along Potiskum-Damaturu road by NDLEA officers who arrested the driver, Ismaila Ali. The spokesman continued: “No less than four suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure of 2,025 pieces of improvised explosive devices (IED) materials intercepted in a Toyota hummer bus marked AGL 905 XX by NDLEA officers along Agaie – Lapai road, Niger state. While the duo of Abdulrauf Shitu Adeyemi, 46, and Asmiyu Rahim, 45, conyeying the IED materials were arrested on the spot, follow up operations led to the arrest of Husaini Abdullahi, 25, at Sokoto main market, Sokoto and Nazifi Abdullahi, 37, at Naibawa Motor Park, Kano on Friday 17th May. “The Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) has directed that all four suspects and the explosive materials be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further investigation. “In another operation, Muhammad Lawal, 42, was nabbed at Central Market Motor Park, Katsina State with 1,000 Ampoules of Pentazocine injection. “A total of 105kg cannabis was on Friday 17th May recovered from a house at Obola community, Owan West LGA, Edo state and a suspect, Gloria Oris arrested when NDLEA officers raided the area. In Kwara state, two suspects: Abdulganiyu Karaman, 55, and Sunday Abel, 37, were on Saturday 18th May arrested with 83kg cannabis and tramadol at Boriya, Baruten LGA, and Offa respectively.” Reacting to the development, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) commended the officers and men of the MMIA, Rivers, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Benue, Kwara, Imo, and Edo Commands of the Agency as well as those of DOGI for their outstanding feats in the past week. Marwa said the efforts have further affirmed the cardinal role of NDLEA in the security architecture of the country. He equally applauded their counterparts in all the commands across the country for intensifying their WADA advocacy lectures to create a fair balance between their drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction activities. https://dailypost.ng/2024/05/19/ndlea-declares-couple-wanted-arrests-four-cartel-members-over-cocaine-seizures/

According to Oxford Languages, a mind game is “a course of manipulative behaviour intended to discomfit another person or gain advantage over them.” Julia Wilde of D News in a 2016 presentation titled “The Mind Games Politicians Use To Win Our Votes” notes: “From the way they look, the way they sound, to the words they choose, politicians and their staff carefully craft their speeches and appearance to invoke emotion in their constituents.” Roy Eidelson also deals with this tendency in his 2018 book titled Political Mind Games: How the 1% Manipulate Our Understanding of What’s Happening, What’s Right, and What’s Possible. In Nigeria, the first civilian Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke, played mind games, during the governorship campaigns in 1992, through, among other means, his awesome long convoys of glittering cars. In fact, he was nicknamed “Serubawon” (‘Cast fear in their hearts’), through his intimidatingly affluent campaign roadshows. Eventually, he defeated even more established politicians in his party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Mind games continue to have concrete relevance in contemporary Nigerian politics, and the incumbent Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is increasingly proving to be adept at playing them. Like gubernatorial candidate Isiaka Adeleke in the 1990s, Fubara has emerged as a fearsome political spectacle in today’s Rivers State. But Fubara did not establish his intimidating political credentials through the display of affluence. Rather, in the language of Roy Eidelson, Fubara demonstrated, unmistakably, “what’s possible”. And his political opponents have been justifiably apprehensive. As the saying goes, if you’ve been stung by a bee before, every insect you see thereafter becomes a stinger in your imagination. In their passionate response to Fubara’s visit to the state’s legislative quarters on 9 May, 2024, it appeared as if the anti-Fubara lawmakers did not want to take anything for granted. But, were the legislators justified? Yes, they were. A feud developed between Fubara and his political mentor and predecessor, Barrister Nyesom Wike (also of the PDP), who was in fact the political enabler of Fubara’s ascendancy to the position of Governor. The rift was due to what appears to be the over-bearing influence of Wike on the Fubara governorship. With Wike controlling an overwhelming majority of the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and with increasing belligerence on both sides, Fubara feared that he could be impeached by the legislators. As a seemingly preemptive measure to prevent the lawmakers from carrying through any impeachment proceedings, Fubara ordered the demolition of the legislative chambers. This counterpoise demonstrated how far he could go in his feud with Wike, who is his erstwhile benefactor, and with Wike’s supporters. Meanwhile, there was widespread exchange of pugnacious language between the two sides. Wike’s grouse with Fubara was that the latter was an ingrate who was repaying good with evil, considering the former’s nomination of and immeasurable support for Fubara’s campaigns, which earned him victory at the governorship polls. In a 24 November, 2023 press engagement, Wike declared: “I don’t like ingrates.” Fubara had ample opportunity to shoot back on 6 May, 2024 when he received a delegation of elders from Bayelsa State: “There’s nothing wrong in one helping anyone, but nobody takes the place of God in any situation, and so long as I’m concerned, God is God. God can even bring your enemy to open a door for you. … But that is not enough for me to worship a human being.” Fubara further said: “the young people … who claim that they are Assembly members, are not assembly members. They’re not existing. … Their existence [depends on] me allowing them to exist. If I derecognise them, they’re nowhere.” Like a ding dong, Wike responded on 12 May, 2024: “I have never told anybody to worship me. Nobody can worship man … but as politicians we appreciate those who have helped us.” Wike also assured one of the 27 anti-Fubara lawmakers: “Nobody will remove you as an Assembly member.” This assurance probably became necessary because on the floor of the House of Assembly on 11 December, 2024, the 27 pro-Wike legislators announced their defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Legal opinions differ as to whether, by that action, they had not lost their seats as Assembly members. In response to calls from both within and outside Rivers State, the President had attempted to broker peace between the feuding parts, based not on legal niceties, but on political expediency. Meanwhile, Fubara doubled down on his mind games by paying an ominous visit to the Rivers State legislative quarters on 9 May, 2024. This visit was ominous in a number of ways. First, the pre-chambers-demolition visit of 30 October, 2023 followed the belief that the legislators were planning to impeach the Governor, just as it was being rumoured before the 9 May, 2024 visit that moves were on to impeach him. Second, the Governor was reported to have said as follows about the visit to the legislative quarters: “It’s my property. I came to see it. Is the assembly not part of my property? Is there anything wrong in checking out how things are going on there? You’re aware of the development. We have a new Speaker. And I went there to see for myself how things are, because there might be a few things I might want to do for the good of our people.” It is to be recalled that the demolition of the assembly chambers was also presumed to be due to the compromised integrity of the building, seemingly for “the good” of the legislators and “our people”. Third, on the 9 May, 2024 visit, he was dressed in a polo shirt on a pair of trousers and topped with a flat cap complemented with a soft, self-assured swagger. This dressing reenacted cynically the sartorial pointer to the possibility of demolishing the legislative quarters. In other words, Fubara’s attire was like the executioner’s suit to the legislators. Once bitten, twice shy. So, the legislators were wondering whether history was about to repeat itself. They expressed their apprehensions very passionately, even if sometimes ridiculously. According to the exasperated factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, “Rivers people were stunned this afternoon when they got the information that the Governor of Rivers State Sir Siminalayi Fubara stormed the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters in yet another attempt to demolish the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters just the way he demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. … The Governor has shown that he’s a violent man. … We call on the President of the Federal Republic, we call on the International Community, the British High Commission, the U.S. Embassy, all known democracies in the world, to intervene … and call him to order.” In continuation of his mind games, on 10 May, 2024, it was widely reported that Fubara had signed Executive Order 001 – 2023 relocating the sitting of the state’s House of Assembly to the Government House. The Punch newspaper of that day tellingly headlined the news as, “Rivers crisis: Anxieties as Fubara’s men release 2023 executive order moving legislators’ sittings to Govt House.” The newspaper also quoted the Executive Order as follows: “Now, therefore, I, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, this 30th Day of October 2023, under the powers vested in me under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hereby issue, order and direct that all proceedings and business of the Rivers State House of Assembly shall temporarily take place at the auditorium, Admin Block, Government House, Port Harcourt, until the repairs, renovation and reconstruction of the chambers of Rivers State House of Assembly.” Just as Fubara’s mind games with respect to the visit to the legislators’ quarters and his Executive Order were beginning to lose some steam, Fubara shot back to headline dominance by saying on 13 May, 2024, at the swearing-in of the new Attorney-General for Rivers State, “As it is today, in the local parlance, they say that the jungle has matured. We will be setting [up] a panel of enquiry to investigate the affair of governance.” Moreover, at the same event, seemingly responding to the assurance which Wike had given to the lawmaker mentioned above that his position in the House of Assembly was secure, Fubara remarked on 13 May, 2024: “Maybe where they are, they are telling them that nothing will happen. It’s happening here live. We have our own legislators that are performing their duty according to the Constitution.” Though he did not specify the years or administrations to be covered, his statement has generated the following, among other headlines: “Fubara to probe Wike’s administration” (The Cable); “Fubara vows to probe Wike’s administration”; and “Why I will probe Wike’s administration – Governor Fubara” (TVC News). These show Fubara’s effective use of innuendo. Wike may be older than Fubara, and may be more versed in the act of governance. But Fubara has managed to establish verbal equality with him; that is, if he has actually not already surpassed Wike with the ominousness of Fubara’s words. To Rivers State House of Assembly members in particular, the fear of Fubara is increasingly appearing to be the beginning of wisdom. He doesn’t seem to have time for base theatrics and doesn’t contest for a singing position; rather, he is proving to be a quintessential Nigerian political mind games player. Fubara is also helping to consolidate a stereotype. On 7 May, 2024, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju said as follows regarding Fubara on the TVC News programme ‘Journalists’ Hangout’: “a lot of people who don’t talk, they are more dangerous than people who talk all the time. This is what we’re seeing.” This seems to be echoing Wike’s perception of Fubara. This perception is metaphorically represented in a Yoruba proverb as “Denge tutu lehin o gbona ninu” (‘Pottage is cold on the surface but hot beneath.’) Those who don’t recognise this fact easily get their tongues and throats scalded. Fubara is, in other words, the kind of person labeled as “Eniyan jeje, ab’iwa kunkun” (‘A gentle person, with a tough character.’) In the past one and half to two weeks, Fubara has thrown River State into emotional over-drive and has made himself a topical issue. In fact, writing about him today in this column, shows how successful his political mind games have been. Meanwhile, the resolution of the Rivers State political crisis is in the hands of the judiciary. It is hoped that the different cases in court would be given accelerated hearing in the interest of the nation. https://thenationonlineng.net/sim-fubaras-political-mind-games/ |

Kaduna-based Politician and activist, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmadu, has condemned what he described as disrespectful and mannerless outburst of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna governor.… Kaduna-based Politician and activist, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmadu, has condemned what he described as disrespectful and mannerless outburst of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna governor. Bashir, one of the sons of the immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, had accused Governor Uba Sani of incompetence and poor performance. He was reacting to comments made earlier by Governor Sani regarding the past administration. Addressing a town hall meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, the governor had said he inherited a huge debt burden of $587m, N85bn and 115 contractual liabilities from the El-Rufai administration. He said the huge debt burden was eating deep into the state’s federal allocation. The governor explained that N7bn out of the N10bn federal allocation for the state in March was deducted to service the state’s debt. He further lamented that the state was left with N3bn, an amount he said was not enough to pay salaries, as the state’s monthly salary bill stands at N5.2 billion. But in a series of posts via X, the young El-Rufai accused Governor Sani of surrounding himself with “incompetent aides appointed for political patronage.” Bashir said instead of admitting its incompetence, the current administration resorted to deflecting by raising alarm on a debt burden inherited from the El-Rufai administration. But defending the governor, Comrade Ahmadu stated that there is nothing wrong with Governor Uba Sani revealing the state of debt left by his predecessor. “What is wrong is inability of the former Governor’s son to comprehend the rationale behind the disclosure to public,” he stated. “His vituperation are unguarded, stupid and unacceptable , especially when the man involved has helped the family during hard times og political waves. Was is it wrong for Governor Uba Sani to address Kaduna citizens at a town hall meeting he governor had said he inherited a huge debt burden that was eating deep into the state’s federal allocation. “For us, as Kaduna citizens of the State ,we can’t accept a situation, where N7bn out of the N10bn federal allocation for the state in March was deducted to service the state’s debt. And for an ill-trained son of a former Governor of state to attack the incumbent Governor is unacceptable in all sense of decorum. Bashir should bury his head in shame.” https://dailytrust.com/bury-your-head-in-shame-kaduna-politician-blasts-el-rufais-son-for-attacking-gov-sani/?utm_term=Autofeed&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter |

Senator Garba Musa Maidoki of the Kebbi South Senatorial District has accused the leadership of the National Assembly of not being fair to all in its operations. The Peoples Democratic Party senator indicted the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate, saying everything about the 2024 Budget was done in secrecy. He warned that the Senate might lose its respect and dignity if something urgent is not done. He told a national newspaper: ”The Senate and, by extension, the National Assembly, is increasingly losing its independence and voice to speak to the Executives. National Assembly ought to be a strong voice and arm of the government, but its leadership is becoming a tool in the hands of the Executives. ”For example, the issue of the 2024 budget. We, the first-timers, thought that what we passed was what had been signed by the President. We never knew that there was something else beneath. ”You can imagine that throughout the period of the debate for the budget, we were not given a copy of the 2024 budget neither were we given the breakdown of the figure. All that we were given were like five pages of what is relevant in your committee.” Asked if he and his colleagues raised the issue in the red chamber, he said: ”We did but there was nothing that we could do because of certain things that are, perhaps, stronger than us. In fact, Committee leaders warned us before the exercise not to even temper with the budget document. ”Unfortunately, we couldn’t talk in unison because of several personal and political interests in the Senate. Patriotism is poor in the Senate. Another challenge there is that you are not sure of the loyalty of the lawmakers. You don’t know who is on your side and not. ”I can confirm to you that the way the 2024 budget was presented by the President was the same way it was passed. No scrutiny nor corrections was done to the document. Many of us cannot tell what was allocated to what because we had no access to the complete document.” https://politicsnigeria.com/we-were-not-given-a-copy-of-the-2024-budget-another-pdp-senator-indicts-akpabio-led-senate/?utm_source=operamini&utm_medium=feednews&utm_campaign=operamini_feednews |
Nigerian Governors, as the most important individuals at the state level, have numerous expectations placed on their shoulders. These expectations range from policy formulations to the execution of sustainable projects targeted at improving the lives of citizens and many more. Admittedly, governance in Nigeria may be a daunting task, especially within the face of limited resources, but even within the face of those hurdles, some of them have shown an exceptional capacity to raise their societies while others have appeared incompetent. Being the most important citizen of the state isn’t a simple road to steer on. Although, it comes with numerous benefits, ranging from national respect as the most sort after citizen of the state to fat allowances and top Security Service from the Nigerian police and the DSS. If you possibly have an interest to finding what proportion a Nigerian Governor earns either monthly or annually, well, this article will enlighten you on Nigerian Governor’s salary after the new minimum wage increase this 2020. Governor’s Salaries in Nigeria: What Proportion Do Governors Earn In Nigeria As Of 2024? Sometimes the salaries of position holders in Nigeria are often a topic of controversy as many have claimed that the rising cost of governance within the country and the money allocated to pay the salaries of those officers will one day have a huge impact on the country’s economy. Also, there are claims that if these officers reduce their salaries and allowances, there will be more funds for development but the level of truth in this is what we can’t say for now. Well, with this post, we’ve decided to deal with this controversy by taking a glance at the typical salary of the average Nigerian governor. We’ll also check out the wages of other position holders within the state of which some of these include the deputy governors, secretaries to the government and the local government chairmen e.t.c, as these public offices functions under the state Governor’s office. Firstly, individuals who have a thing for politics and may aspire to become a governor in Nigeria one day, has to meet the following requirements as prescribed by the constitution: Must be a Nigerian by birth Must not be younger than 35 years. Must be a registered member of a party approved by INEC. Finally, he/she will be entitled to a four-year tenure and may serve for an additional four years if re-elected by people of the given state in Nigeria. The state governor annual salary is N11,540,896, with the monthly basic salary being ₦2,223,705, while the annual leave allowance is ₦222,370.50. In line with the 2009 approved salary earning in Nigeria, every state governor is entitled to 400% of his annual basic salary totalling ₦8,894,820 as loan for vehicles and maintenance. Aside, the essential salary and vehicle allowance, the governor’s package also comes with accommodation and furniture allowances, which is additionally provided by the government. Additionally, the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and monetary Package (RMAFP) may be a welfare package that probably explains more on the spending of governors within the country. Right below is the complete breakdown of the allowance and salary of the state governors in Nigeria: Monthly Basic Salary – ₦2,223,705 Leave Allowance – ₦222,370.50 Vehicle Loan – 400% of annual basic salary End of Tenure Gratuity = ₦6,671,115. Total Annual Salary of a governor in Nigeria is capped at 11,540,896 Naira. Salaries of Deputy State Governors In Nigeria The deputy governor is the second in command and by constitution can govern the state in the absence of the state governor. He is seen as the second citizen within the state, and he/she earns a touch bit less than the annual salary of the state governor. A deputy governor in Nigeria receives 10,772,296 Naira as salary annually. The breakdown for the deputy Governor can be seen below: Monthly Basic Salary – ₦2,112,215 Vehicle Loan – ₦8,448,860 Annual Leave Allowance – ₦211,221.50. The deputy governor also enjoys accommodation and furniture allowance, even as the governor which is dully provided for by the government also as medical bills. No limit is additionally set for foreign trips. A Look At The Commissioner/Secretary To The Government Salary Structure The Governor’s entourage includes the deputy governor, commissioners in different state ministries, the secretary to the government and others. These persons can not be left behind while evaluating Governors salaries and allowances. Commissioners and sectaries at the state level in Nigeria earn an equivalent salary. Persons occupying any of these positions receive a salary of ₦10,831,522 that consists of an annual basic salary of ₦1,337,225. These set of people to be mentioned occupy vital offices that operate within the state to ensure that a smooth and successful tenure of the Governor is achieved. Within this range are the salaries of the chairmen of the State Government Officials, Commissioners, Government Service Commission, State Judicial Service Commission, and Chief of Staff to Governor. Below may be a breakdown of what they earn: Basic Salary – ₦1,337,225 Furniture Allowance – ₦4,011,675 Leave Allowance – ₦133,722.50. Vehicle Loan – ₦5,348,900 Severance Gratuity – ₦4,011,675 The only difference between the allowances of commissioners and secretaries at the state level is on their foreign trips, which is restricted to $600 while an area trip is about at N25,000. What Is The Salary Of A Local Government Chairman In Nigeria? This is the grass root political office. Persons who occupy this office are meant to connect with the people in the grassroot level and with these persons in place the Governor is greatly informed on the needs of the people in his state. The annual salary of local government Chairmen in Nigeria is ₦5,994,659 once you add up all other allowances attached to the office. Furniture allowance is received once in four years. Here may be a breakdown of what government chairmen earn within the country: Annual Basic Salary – ₦908,312 Furniture Allowance – ₦1,362,468 Leave Allowance – ₦90,831.20 Vehicle Loan – ₦3,633,248 Severance Gratuity – ₦2,724,936 For salaries of the deputy government chairman, it’s estimated at ₦5,630,169.60. Annual basic salary of ₦853,056 and furniture allowance of ₦1,279,584 is additionally included plus a vehicle loan of ₦3,412,224 and a separate severance gratuity of N2,559,168.00. Conclusively, While the above figures for these position holders might sound juicy, the task that comes with the job isn’t an easy one. The sole advantage is that you simply are paid well for occupying such positions. The work of a public officer also shouldn’t be done due to the advantages or gains but as a service to humanity and therefore the folks that elected you. But obviously, as long as the Nigerian system is involved, we all know that most of these governors don’t live by the salaries stated above, as governors with no exception can boast of acquiring billions of Naira in their private accounts at the end of their tenure. Politicians in Nigeria are also seen as the richest set of people in the country. Nigeria’s political offices are believed to be the fastest means of acquiring wealth. This means that any elected individual after being emerged victorious will be desperate to accumulate enough wealth through legal and illegal means. Some governors are so corrupt that they even attempt to empty the state’s account, embezzling states funds meant for state projects and also depriving pension earners their rights to monthly pension as a result of greed. In the nearest future, we hope to experience a less corrupt and transparent system of government, one that can rely and depend on their monthly salaries instead of embezzling public funds. https://thenigerianinfo.com/salary-of-nigerian-governors-and-their-deputies-breakdown/ |
It’s no longer at ease… It never was and we are reasonable enough to understand this. Those of us who knew it already are giving birth to those who would come to understand this when they attain the age of reason. Together with them, we would all be expressing hope for a better tomorrow for our country while some people would remain bent on frustrating this beleaguered journey to happiness. In the mix is a realisation that some would always be in a position to lead, and being at the driver’s seat confers certain privileges and responsibilities. Unfortunately, most of these Nigerians take more as privileges compared to what they give as responsibilities. Based on this, what continues to beat the imagination of the people living in the land of hope is the perennial pretence by those in authority to solving Nigeria’s numerous socio-economic problems by employing the same tools – the tools that planted them, nurture them and are propagating these troubles. Since it came upon us on May 29 last year, Nigerians are doing their best by worming into the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The administration is also worming into Nigerians, but trust is not a common commodity in this strained intercourse. The administration came with what its supporters refer to as a promise to make things better. Its promises are so far still unclear but, as Nigerians are wont to, they are giving their best in terms of support even as many others are lamenting the turn of the economy. Millions of Nigerians had thought that by now, the administration of a very knowledgeable Tinubu would have moved beyond rhetoric to get a firm grasp of the cascading economy. Many others also had thought that by now, all those oil subsidy thieves Tinubu had always talked about would have been named and brought to book. A school of thought had also expected to see proper action in the country’s messy oil sector. But so far, it’s been just plain meanderings and sophistry. It reminds one of a hilarious contention on punishment for erring Nigerian public officials. By ‘erring’, it is intended to mean regular public servants who have transformed into behemoths. They err and are untouchable and when their error turns out to be so much of a moral burden on the principalities and powers, they get a slap on the wrist. It’s no longer at ease… It never was and we are reasonable enough to understand this. A school of thought had also expected to see proper action in the country’s messy oil sector. But so far, it’s been just plain meanderings and sophistry. The last civil servant convicted of fraud, theft, corruption, graft or anything bordering on any of these crimes against the society was Obi Okonkwo. We should remember Obi Okonkwo in No Longer at Ease. Remember that it is a book written by Chinua Achebe? In it, Obi Okonkwo is a civil servant. He erred as we see them do today and he was tied and convicted for corruption. Obi Okonkwo was also duly sentenced. During his trial, there was no Professor Pondei drama and there was no Olisa Metuh show. It went smoothly. By the way, it was a colonial government! You recall that No Longer at Ease is a work of fiction right? Good. So, what the joke is saying is that in Nigeria, the only civil servant ever that has fallen under the proper hammer of the law for corruption is a fictitious character. We are waiting for the first real life civil servant in Nigeria that would be brought to book for corruption in Nigeria. Maina? Okay, dey play… To add verve to the joke, we have brought our brothers in Ghana with us too in this fartened room. In his own record, Ayi Kwei Armah in his debut novel, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, presented a character, Koomson, which is similar in sleaze and kleptomaniac in nature to Nigeria’s Obi Okonkwo. The notable differences in their circumstances notwithstanding, Obi Okonkwo is not as lucky as his colleague Koomson, the corrupt civil servant that escaped arrest and the hands of the law. The rich, well-to-do Koomson, somehow, had to manage to squeeze himself through the latrine he had despised when he refused to use it earlier. It is always bad for the bad boy when they come for him. Meanwhile, bad people run at all times, but they actively run more and better at two main periods of their existence: When they are being pursued by the legal authorities, and when no one is pursuing them. The second reason for this running is scripturally-prescribed. Their mind will never find the space or wherewithal to settle down. For instance, you may wonder what is pursuing our political leaders and top public servants when they are going on the road. All kinds of security – known and unknown, seen and unseen – would be part of their entourage. In addition to these, they would be looking unsettled even while ensconced in expensive fortified vehicles, which are tinted so dark like vampires’ enclave. Yet, they are our ‘servants’ and are paid from the sweat and blood or these people they are running away from. Indeed, it is no longer at ease. It is no longer at ease for the Nigerian and the Nigerian rulers. The rain pounding the slave is the same rain pouring on the slave master. The chicken has perched on the rope and there can no longer be peace for both the chicken and the rope. That, kind of, explains why our dear First Lady, beautiful Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has joined in the quest to keep hordes of Nigerians off the line of the Japa syndrome. She knows why she wants us to shelve the Japa idea because we end up doing menial jobs in the white man’s country. We drive cabs; we become caregivers and happily take up cleaning jobs over there. These are jobs we despise and cannot touch with even long poles here at home in Nigeria. Mummy Tinubu spoke as a mother indeed. She is worried that we are not helping one another to climb out of the vale of pervasive poverty but she spoke like one who didn’t get the script. She spoke like a worried mother who didn’t check what was pursuing her hysterical child before she plunged into the pool of diatribe against the child. Nigerians who are emigrating out of the country see better opportunities in all those countries they are heading to. Beyond the better currency which gives hugely better value for their efforts, they also enjoy sundry amenities which make life more meaningful and enjoyable. There are good roads, stable electricity, functional hospitals, and they wouldn’t need to dig wells or boreholes to be able to get water. Mummy, you know that those who japa have escaped being their own government as we have here, and this is in addition to their being paid as and when due. They will pay tax and they “pay bills” but you are sure that they get value for their money. Nigerian nurses are currently in court to challenge the government of Madam Tinubu’s husband which is trying to deny them their rights to travel abroad for greener pasture. While the matter rages like a bloodless war, why should we not think about what is at the root of the misnomer? For minders of our country and the citizenry, it is no longer at ease. But do they really care? https://tribuneonlineng.com/madam-tinubu-it-is-no-longer-at-ease/ |
Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a swipe at the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. He stated that Wike has boxed himself into a political dead end and that the best he can be is to be a mole for the APC. According to Momodu, Wike supported Gov Fubara for the gubernatorial election only because he hoped to continue as a 3rd term Governor, by proxy but his plans failed. The PDP chieftain made this known in a post via Instagram on Thursday while reacting to Wike’s media parley with journalists in Abuja. Wike addressed the speculation of dumping the PDP, stating, “I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Have you ever seen me change anything?” His assertion comes amidst his noticeable absence from PDP meetings and campaign activities, especially in recent off-cycle elections. However, Wike expressed no regrets over his decisions, emphasizing the importance of moving forward. In response, Dele Momodu said Wike’s inability to secure the party’s presidential ticket prompted his decision to support Tinubu. The PDP chieftain faulted those still condoning the excesses of the former Governor in the opposition party. He wrote, We must continue to debunk these lies… “1. Nobody went against the Constitution of our party PDP. Wike and his friends manipulated it and threw away the zoning arrangement, hoping to favor him. Wike’s campaign for a Southern Presidency was only about WIKE. He and his cronies had enough resources to block all roads to the South and reserved the Southern ticket exclusively for WIKE. PETER OBI got the message early enough and dumped our party. WIKE hired Chairmen. WIKE fired them. After WIKE lost the primary, he was willing and ready to be picked as Vice Presidential candidate. He only became inconsolable after he lost that slot too. It is his legitimate right to be angry and he retaliated mercilessly by supporting TINUBU, which was also his legitimate decision. “2. WIKE supported his personal choice of FUBARA for the gubernatorial election only because he hoped to continue as a 3rd term Governor, by proxy. When FUBARA finally found his voice, WIKE sent thunder after him. The Governor is still not sitting comfortably in his office nearly one year after being sworn in, just because of the massive ego of one man WIKE. “3. What manner of cruel audacity can make a man speak so boldly about being a member of PDP when you’re already working for your idol in APC, and even boasting that nobody can challenge you in 2027? I do not blame WIKE. I blame those who have condoned his excesses, endlessly, in PDP. WIKE is left with only one desperate mission, a total annihilation of PDP, on behalf of one master he knows he cannot challenge, TINUBU. It gladdens my heart that WIKE has boxed himself into a political dead end, by cutting his nose to spite his face. The best he can be is to continue his role as an APC mole because he prefers to reign in hell than to serve in heaven. That is the way the cookie crumbles… Sad.”. https://reportgist.com/2024/03/22/im-happy-wike-has-boxed-himself-in-a-political-dead-end-dele-momodu/ |
The suspected ring leader of the gang that recently killed 17 soldiers in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Council Area of Delta State, has come out to justify their action. In a trending TikTok video, the young man, who did not bother to mask his face, dismissed reports that the killed soldiers were on a peace mission to the community. He claimed that they were rather there to fight on behalf of the neighbouring Okoloba community in the lingering land dispute. While Okuama is Urhobo, Okoloba is Ijaw. According, to the gang leader, who said that his father, a retired Nigerian Army Captain, died last year, the soldiers earlier came and took away some people and allegedly killed them, only to come back to arrest Okuama community leaders. Speaking in Pidgin English, he said in the video, which he repeatedly said would be his last: “Okuama and Okoloba get land issue. Small crisis come dey dey. Ijaw people wey Federal Government give power … dat man go use army carry people from Okoloba community. Now dey don dey come back to come carry community leaders. And once they carry community leaders, you know the youths are powerless.” The gang leader said that in the circumstances, they had no regret in killing the soldiers. The 17 victims, all of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were murdered on March 14. In a statement titled “Rest in Peace, our Fallen Heroes,” the Nigerian Army identified the victims as Commanding Officer, 181 Amphibious Battalion, Lt.-Col. A.H. Ali, Majors S.D. Shafa and D.E. Obi, and Captain U. Zakari. Soldiers affected include Staff Sergeant Yahaya Saidu, Corporals Yahaya Danbaba and Kabiru Bashir, Lance Corporals Bulus Haruna, Sola Opeyemi, Bello Anas, Hamman Peter and Ibrahim Abdullahi. Others were Privates Alhaji Isah, Clement Francis, Abubakar Ali, Ibrahim Adamu and Adamu Ibrahim. The Nigerian Military has launched a manhunt for the suspects. https://platinumtimes.ng/breaking-man-takes-responsibility-for-killing-of-soldiers-in-delta-reveals-face/

Hahhahaha!
