Politics / Bury Your Head In Shame’, Kaduna Politician Blasts El-rufai’s Son For Attacking by amoreobansu: 6:53pm On Mar 31
Kaduna-based Politician and activist, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmadu, has condemned what he described as disrespectful and mannerless outburst of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna governor.…

Kaduna-based Politician and activist, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmadu, has condemned what he described as disrespectful and mannerless outburst of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna governor.

Bashir, one of the sons of the immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, had accused Governor Uba Sani of incompetence and poor performance.

He was reacting to comments made earlier by Governor Sani regarding the past administration.

Addressing a town hall meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, the governor had said he inherited a huge debt burden of $587m, N85bn and 115 contractual liabilities from the El-Rufai administration.

He said the huge debt burden was eating deep into the state’s federal allocation.

The governor explained that N7bn out of the N10bn federal allocation for the state in March was deducted to service the state’s debt.

He further lamented that the state was left with N3bn, an amount he said was not enough to pay salaries, as the state’s monthly salary bill stands at N5.2 billion.

But in a series of posts via X, the young El-Rufai accused Governor Sani of surrounding himself with “incompetent aides appointed for political patronage.”

Bashir said instead of admitting its incompetence, the current administration resorted to deflecting by raising alarm on a debt burden inherited from the El-Rufai administration.

But defending the governor, Comrade Ahmadu stated that there is nothing wrong with Governor Uba Sani revealing the state of debt left by his predecessor.

“What is wrong is inability of the former Governor’s son to comprehend the rationale behind the disclosure to public,” he stated.

“His vituperation are unguarded, stupid and unacceptable , especially when the man involved has helped the family during hard times og political waves. Was is it wrong for Governor Uba Sani to address Kaduna citizens at a town hall meeting he governor had said he inherited a huge debt burden that was eating deep into the state’s federal allocation.

“For us, as Kaduna citizens of the State ,we can’t accept a situation, where N7bn out of the N10bn federal allocation for the state in March was deducted to service the state’s debt. And for an ill-trained son of a former Governor of state to attack the incumbent Governor is unacceptable in all sense of decorum. Bashir should bury his head in shame.”

Politics / “We Were Not Given A Copy Of The 2024 Budget” – Another PDP Senator Indicts Akpa by amoreobansu: 10:28am On Mar 26
Senator Garba Musa Maidoki of the Kebbi South Senatorial District has accused the leadership of the National Assembly of not being fair to all in its operations.

The Peoples Democratic Party senator indicted the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate, saying everything about the 2024 Budget was done in secrecy.

He warned that the Senate might lose its respect and dignity if something urgent is not done.

He told a national newspaper:

”The Senate and, by extension, the National Assembly, is increasingly losing its independence and voice to speak to the Executives. National Assembly ought to be a strong voice and arm of the government, but its leadership is becoming a tool in the hands of the Executives.

”For example, the issue of the 2024 budget. We, the first-timers, thought that what we passed was what had been signed by the President. We never knew that there was something else beneath.

”You can imagine that throughout the period of the debate for the budget, we were not given a copy of the 2024 budget neither were we given the breakdown of the figure. All that we were given were like five pages of what is relevant in your committee.”

Asked if he and his colleagues raised the issue in the red chamber, he said:

”We did but there was nothing that we could do because of certain things that are, perhaps, stronger than us. In fact, Committee leaders warned us before the exercise not to even temper with the budget document.

”Unfortunately, we couldn’t talk in unison because of several personal and political interests in the Senate. Patriotism is poor in the Senate. Another challenge there is that you are not sure of the loyalty of the lawmakers. You don’t know who is on your side and not.

”I can confirm to you that the way the 2024 budget was presented by the President was the same way it was passed. No scrutiny nor corrections was done to the document. Many of us cannot tell what was allocated to what because we had no access to the complete document.”

Politics / Salary Of Nigerian Governors And Their Deputies (Full Breakdown) by amoreobansu: 5:15am On Mar 26
Nigerian Governors, as the most important individuals at the state level, have numerous expectations placed on their shoulders. These expectations range from policy formulations to the execution of sustainable projects targeted at improving the lives of citizens and many more.

Admittedly, governance in Nigeria may be a daunting task, especially within the face of limited resources, but even within the face of those hurdles, some of them have shown an exceptional capacity to raise their societies while others have appeared incompetent.

Being the most important citizen of the state isn’t a simple road to steer on. Although, it comes with numerous benefits, ranging from national respect as the most sort after citizen of the state to fat allowances and top Security Service from the Nigerian police and the DSS.

Governor’s Salaries in Nigeria: What Proportion Do Governors Earn In Nigeria As Of 2024?

Sometimes the salaries of position holders in Nigeria are often a topic of controversy as many have claimed that the rising cost of governance within the country and the money allocated to pay the salaries of those officers will one day have a huge impact on the country’s economy.

Also, there are claims that if these officers reduce their salaries and allowances, there will be more funds for development but the level of truth in this is what we can’t say for now.

Well, with this post, we’ve decided to deal with this controversy by taking a glance at the typical salary of the average Nigerian governor.

We’ll also check out the wages of other position holders within the state of which some of these include the deputy governors, secretaries to the government and the local government chairmen e.t.c, as these public offices functions under the state Governor’s office.

Aside, the essential salary and vehicle allowance, the governor’s package also comes with accommodation and furniture allowances, which is additionally provided by the government.

Additionally, the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and monetary Package (RMAFP) may be a welfare package that probably explains more on the spending of governors within the country.

Right below is the complete breakdown of the allowance and salary of the state governors in Nigeria:

Monthly Basic Salary – ₦2,223,705
Leave Allowance – ₦222,370.50
Vehicle Loan – 400% of annual basic salary
End of Tenure Gratuity = ₦6,671,115.
Total Annual Salary of a governor in Nigeria is capped at 11,540,896 Naira.

Salaries of Deputy State Governors In Nigeria
The deputy governor is the second in command and by constitution can govern the state in the absence of the state governor. He is seen as the second citizen within the state, and he/she earns a touch bit less than the annual salary of the state governor.

Monthly Basic Salary – ₦2,112,215

The deputy governor also enjoys accommodation and furniture allowance, even as the governor which is dully provided for by the government also as medical bills. No limit is additionally set for foreign trips.

A Look At The Commissioner/Secretary To The Government Salary Structure
The Governor’s entourage includes the deputy governor, commissioners in different state ministries, the secretary to the government and others. These persons can not be left behind while evaluating Governors salaries and allowances.

Commissioners and sectaries at the state level in Nigeria earn an equivalent salary. Persons occupying any of these positions receive a salary of ₦10,831,522 that consists of an annual basic salary of ₦1,337,225.

These set of people to be mentioned occupy vital offices that operate within the state to ensure that a smooth and successful tenure of the Governor is achieved. Within this range are the salaries of the chairmen of the State Government Officials, Commissioners, Government Service Commission, State Judicial Service Commission, and Chief of Staff to Governor.

Below may be a breakdown of what they earn:

Basic Salary – ₦1,337,225
Furniture Allowance – ₦4,011,675
Leave Allowance – ₦133,722.50.
Vehicle Loan – ₦5,348,900
Severance Gratuity – ₦4,011,675
The only difference between the allowances of commissioners and secretaries at the state level is on their foreign trips, which is restricted to $600 while an area trip is about at N25,000.

What Is The Salary Of A Local Government Chairman In Nigeria?
This is the grass root political office. Persons who occupy this office are meant to connect with the people in the grassroot level and with these persons in place the Governor is greatly informed on the needs of the people in his state.

The annual salary of local government Chairmen in Nigeria is ₦5,994,659 once you add up all other allowances attached to the office. Furniture allowance is received once in four years.

Here may be a breakdown of what government chairmen earn within the country:

Annual Basic Salary – ₦908,312
Furniture Allowance – ₦1,362,468

Vehicle Loan – ₦3,633,248
Severance Gratuity – ₦2,724,936
For salaries of the deputy government chairman, it’s estimated at ₦5,630,169.60. Annual basic salary of ₦853,056 and furniture allowance of ₦1,279,584 is additionally included plus a vehicle loan of ₦3,412,224 and a separate severance gratuity of N2,559,168.00.

Conclusively, While the above figures for these position holders might sound juicy, the task that comes with the job isn’t an easy one.

The sole advantage is that you simply are paid well for occupying such positions. The work of a public officer also shouldn’t be done due to the advantages or gains but as a service to humanity and therefore the folks that elected you.

But obviously, as long as the Nigerian system is involved, we all know that most of these governors don’t live by the salaries stated above, as governors with no exception can boast of acquiring billions of Naira in their private accounts at the end of their tenure.
Politicians in Nigeria are also seen as the richest set of people in the country.

Nigeria’s political offices are believed to be the fastest means of acquiring wealth. This means that any elected individual after being emerged victorious will be desperate to accumulate enough wealth through legal and illegal means.

Some governors are so corrupt that they even attempt to empty the state’s account, embezzling states funds meant for state projects and also depriving pension earners their rights to monthly pension as a result of greed.

In the nearest future, we hope to experience a less corrupt and transparent system of government, one that can rely and depend on their monthly salaries instead of embezzling public funds.

Politics / Madam Tinubu, It Is No Longer At Ease by amoreobansu: 5:07pm On Mar 23
It’s no longer at ease… It never was and we are reasonable enough to understand this. Those of us who knew it already are giving birth to those who would come to understand this when they attain the age of reason. Together with them, we would all be expressing hope for a better tomorrow for our country while some people would remain bent on frustrating this beleaguered journey to happiness. In the mix is a realisation that some would always be in a position to lead, and being at the driver’s seat confers certain privileges and responsibilities. Unfortunately, most of these Nigerians take more as privileges compared to what they give as responsibilities. Based on this, what continues to beat the imagination of the people living in the land of hope is the perennial pretence by those in authority to solving Nigeria’s numerous socio-economic problems by employing the same tools – the tools that planted them, nurture them and are propagating these troubles.

Since it came upon us on May 29 last year, Nigerians are doing their best by worming into the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The administration is also worming into Nigerians, but trust is not a common commodity in this strained intercourse. The administration came with what its supporters refer to as a promise to make things better. Its promises are so far still unclear but, as Nigerians are wont to, they are giving their best in terms of support even as many others are lamenting the turn of the economy. Millions of Nigerians had thought that by now, the administration of a very knowledgeable Tinubu would have moved beyond rhetoric to get a firm grasp of the cascading economy. Many others also had thought that by now, all those oil subsidy thieves Tinubu had always talked about would have been named and brought to book. A school of thought had also expected to see proper action in the country’s messy oil sector. But so far, it’s been just plain meanderings and sophistry.

It reminds one of a hilarious contention on punishment for erring Nigerian public officials. By ‘erring’, it is intended to mean regular public servants who have transformed into behemoths. They err and are untouchable and when their error turns out to be so much of a moral burden on the principalities and powers, they get a slap on the wrist.

The last civil servant convicted of fraud, theft, corruption, graft or anything bordering on any of these crimes against the society was Obi Okonkwo. We should remember Obi Okonkwo in No Longer at Ease. Remember that it is a book written by Chinua Achebe? In it, Obi Okonkwo is a civil servant. He erred as we see them do today and he was tied and convicted for corruption. Obi Okonkwo was also duly sentenced. During his trial, there was no Professor Pondei drama and there was no Olisa Metuh show. It went smoothly. By the way, it was a colonial government!

You recall that No Longer at Ease is a work of fiction right? Good. So, what the joke is saying is that in Nigeria, the only civil servant ever that has fallen under the proper hammer of the law for corruption is a fictitious character. We are waiting for the first real life civil servant in Nigeria that would be brought to book for corruption in Nigeria. Maina? Okay, dey play…

To add verve to the joke, we have brought our brothers in Ghana with us too in this fartened room. In his own record, Ayi Kwei Armah in his debut novel, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, presented a character, Koomson, which is similar in sleaze and kleptomaniac in nature to Nigeria’s Obi Okonkwo. The notable differences in their circumstances notwithstanding, Obi Okonkwo is not as lucky as his colleague Koomson, the corrupt civil servant that escaped arrest and the hands of the law. The rich, well-to-do Koomson, somehow, had to manage to squeeze himself through the latrine he had despised when he refused to use it earlier. It is always bad for the bad boy when they come for him.

Meanwhile, bad people run at all times, but they actively run more and better at two main periods of their existence: When they are being pursued by the legal authorities, and when no one is pursuing them. The second reason for this running is scripturally-prescribed. Their mind will never find the space or wherewithal to settle down. For instance, you may wonder what is pursuing our political leaders and top public servants when they are going on the road. All kinds of security – known and unknown, seen and unseen – would be part of their entourage. In addition to these, they would be looking unsettled even while ensconced in expensive fortified vehicles, which are tinted so dark like vampires’ enclave. Yet, they are our ‘servants’ and are paid from the sweat and blood or these people they are running away from.

Indeed, it is no longer at ease. It is no longer at ease for the Nigerian and the Nigerian rulers. The rain pounding the slave is the same rain pouring on the slave master. The chicken has perched on the rope and there can no longer be peace for both the chicken and the rope. That, kind of, explains why our dear First Lady, beautiful Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has joined in the quest to keep hordes of Nigerians off the line of the Japa syndrome. She knows why she wants us to shelve the Japa idea because we end up doing menial jobs in the white man’s country. We drive cabs; we become caregivers and happily take up cleaning jobs over there. These are jobs we despise and cannot touch with even long poles here at home in Nigeria.

Mummy Tinubu spoke as a mother indeed. She is worried that we are not helping one another to climb out of the vale of pervasive poverty but she spoke like one who didn’t get the script. She spoke like a worried mother who didn’t check what was pursuing her hysterical child before she plunged into the pool of diatribe against the child. Nigerians who are emigrating out of the country see better opportunities in all those countries they are heading to. Beyond the better currency which gives hugely better value for their efforts, they also enjoy sundry amenities which make life more meaningful and enjoyable. There are good roads, stable electricity, functional hospitals, and they wouldn’t need to dig wells or boreholes to be able to get water.

Mummy, you know that those who japa have escaped being their own government as we have here, and this is in addition to their being paid as and when due. They will pay tax and they “pay bills” but you are sure that they get value for their money. Nigerian nurses are currently in court to challenge the government of Madam Tinubu’s husband which is trying to deny them their rights to travel abroad for greener pasture.

While the matter rages like a bloodless war, why should we not think about what is at the root of the misnomer? For minders of our country and the citizenry, it is no longer at ease. But do they really care?

Politics / I’m Happy Wike Has Boxed Himself In A Political Dead End – Dele Momodu by amoreobansu: 6:01pm On Mar 22
Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a swipe at the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. He stated that Wike has boxed himself into a political dead end and that the best he can be is to be a mole for the APC.

According to Momodu, Wike supported Gov Fubara for the gubernatorial election only because he hoped to continue as a 3rd term Governor, by proxy but his plans failed.

The PDP chieftain made this known in a post via Instagram on Thursday while reacting to Wike’s media parley with journalists in Abuja.

Wike addressed the speculation of dumping the PDP, stating, “I am a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Have you ever seen me change anything?”

His assertion comes amidst his noticeable absence from PDP meetings and campaign activities, especially in recent off-cycle elections. However, Wike expressed no regrets over his decisions, emphasizing the importance of moving forward.

In response, Dele Momodu said Wike’s inability to secure the party’s presidential ticket prompted his decision to support Tinubu.

The PDP chieftain faulted those still condoning the excesses of the former Governor in the opposition party.

He wrote, We must continue to debunk these lies…

“1. Nobody went against the Constitution of our party PDP. Wike and his friends manipulated it and threw away the zoning arrangement, hoping to favor him. Wike’s campaign for a Southern Presidency was only about WIKE.

He and his cronies had enough resources to block all roads to the South and reserved the Southern ticket exclusively for WIKE. PETER OBI got the message early enough and dumped our party. WIKE hired Chairmen. WIKE fired them. After WIKE lost the primary, he was willing and ready to be picked as Vice Presidential candidate.

He only became inconsolable after he lost that slot too. It is his legitimate right to be angry and he retaliated mercilessly by supporting TINUBU, which was also his legitimate decision.

“2. WIKE supported his personal choice of FUBARA for the gubernatorial election only because he hoped to continue as a 3rd term Governor, by proxy. When FUBARA finally found his voice, WIKE sent thunder after him.

The Governor is still not sitting comfortably in his office nearly one year after being sworn in, just because of the massive ego of one man WIKE.

“3. What manner of cruel audacity can make a man speak so boldly about being a member of PDP when you’re already working for your idol in APC, and even boasting that nobody can challenge you in 2027? I do not blame WIKE. I blame those who have condoned his excesses, endlessly, in PDP.

WIKE is left with only one desperate mission, a total annihilation of PDP, on behalf of one master he knows he cannot challenge, TINUBU. It gladdens my heart that WIKE has boxed himself into a political dead end, by cutting his nose to spite his face. The best he can be is to continue his role as an APC mole because he prefers to reign in hell than to serve in heaven. That is the way the cookie crumbles… Sad.”.

Crime / Man Takes Responsibility For Killing Of Soldiers In Delta, Reveals Face by amoreobansu: 2:24pm On Mar 21
The suspected ring leader of the gang that recently killed 17 soldiers in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Council Area of Delta State, has come out to justify their action.

In a trending TikTok video, the young man, who did not bother to mask his face, dismissed reports that the killed soldiers were on a peace mission to the community. He claimed that they were rather there to fight on behalf of the neighbouring Okoloba community in the lingering land dispute. While Okuama is Urhobo, Okoloba is Ijaw.

According, to the gang leader, who said that his father, a retired Nigerian Army Captain, died last year, the soldiers earlier came and took away some people and allegedly killed them, only to come back to arrest Okuama community leaders.

Speaking in Pidgin English, he said in the video, which he repeatedly said would be his last: “Okuama and Okoloba get land issue. Small crisis come dey dey. Ijaw people wey Federal Government give power … dat man go use army carry people from Okoloba community. Now dey don dey come back to come carry community leaders. And once they carry community leaders, you know the youths are powerless.”

The gang leader said that in the circumstances, they had no regret in killing the soldiers.

The 17 victims, all of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were murdered on March 14.

In a statement titled “Rest in Peace, our Fallen Heroes,” the Nigerian Army identified the victims as Commanding Officer, 181 Amphibious Battalion, Lt.-Col. A.H. Ali, Majors S.D. Shafa and D.E. Obi, and Captain U. Zakari. Soldiers affected include Staff Sergeant Yahaya Saidu, Corporals Yahaya Danbaba and Kabiru Bashir, Lance Corporals Bulus Haruna, Sola Opeyemi, Bello Anas, Hamman Peter and Ibrahim Abdullahi. Others were Privates Alhaji Isah, Clement Francis, Abubakar Ali, Ibrahim Adamu and Adamu Ibrahim.

The Nigerian Military has launched a manhunt for the suspects.

The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has advised Nigerians to grow their food amid the nationwide food inflation and economic downturn.

According to Mrs Tinubu, the focus on agriculture is the way forward for the country.

In a statement issued by her special assistant on media, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady said this at the State house while receiving the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed.

The First Lady noted that the various interventions of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) especially in the areas of Agriculture, Empowerment, Education, Health and Social Welfare are to complement the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The President has made the right decisions. These decisions will help us build a Nigeria that is more respected. We should be more accountable as a people as regards our resources,” she said.

“We have to inspire them [Youths] to think Nigeria first before any State.

“Youth between 15 years to 25 years will design the fabric depicting Nigeria and not just their State or tribe. The prize money is huge.”

In her remarks during her visit, Mohammed explained that the UN is looking forward to the country committing more funds to Youth, Women and Girls.

She said: “We need your voice for what the UN is doing with women empowerment, girls, poverty alleviation, education and the rest.”

Nairaland / General / Young People Becoming Less Happy Than Older Generations, Research Shows by amoreobansu: 5:07am On Mar 20
Dr Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, says ‘young people are really struggling in the US and around the world’ Composite: Guardian Design/Getty Images
America’s top doctor says governments’ failure to better regulate social media is ‘insane’

Young people are becoming less happy than older generations as they suffer “the equivalent of a midlife crisis”, global research has revealed as America’s top doctor warned that “young people are really struggling”.

Dr Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, said allowing children to use social media was like giving them medicine that is not proven to be safe. He said the failure of governments to better regulate social media in recent years was “insane”.

Murthy spoke to the Guardian as new data revealed that young people across North America were now less happy than their elders, with the same “historic” shift expected to follow in western Europe.

Declining wellbeing among under-30s has driven the US out of the top 20 list of happiest nations, the 2024 World Happiness Report revealed.

After 12 years in which people aged 15 to 24 were measured as being happier than older generations in the US, the trend appears to have flipped in 2017. The gap has also narrowed in western Europe and the same change could happen in the coming year or two, it is thought.

Murthy described the report findings as a “red flag that young people are really struggling in the US and now increasingly around the world”. He said he was still waiting to see data that proved social media platforms were safe for children and adolescents, and called for international action to improve real-life social connections for young people.

The World Happiness Report, an annual barometer of wellbeing in 140 nations coordinated by Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre, Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, showed “disconcerting drops [in youth happiness] especially in North America and western Europe,” said Prof Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, director of the Wellbeing Research Centre and editor of the study.

“To think that in some parts of the world children are already experiencing the equivalent of a midlife crisis, demands immediate policy action,” he said.

The falling wellbeing scores for North America (in a grouping that includes Australia and New Zealand) “contradicts a well-established notion … that kids start out happier before they slide down the U-curve towards a mid-life crisis before [wellbeing] picks up again,” De Neve added.

British people under 30 ranked 32nd in the rankings, behind nations such as Moldova, Kosovo and even El Salvador, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates.

By contrast British over-60s made it into the top 20 of the world’s happiest older generations. Earlier this month a majority of British teenagers told pollsters they expect their lives to be worse than the previous generation.

The US fell eight places in the overall happiness rankings to 23rd, but when only the under-30s were asked the world’s richest nation ranked 62nd – behind Guatemala, Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria. If the views of only people aged 60 and over were accounted for, the US was the 10th happiest nation.

“For the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, happiness has decreased in all age groups, but especially for the young, so much so that the young are now, in 2021-23, the least happy age group,” the report found. In 2010 the young were happier than those in midlife.

The report does not reveal the causes of the changes, but they come amid increasing concern at the impact of rising social media use, income inequalities, the housing crisis, and fears about war and climate change on the happiness of children and young people.

Murthy said US adolescents were spending nearly five hours a day on social media on average and a third were staying up until midnight on week nights on their devices. He called for legislation “now” to reduce harms to young people from social media including limiting or eliminating features such as like buttons and infinite scrolling.

The World Happiness Report tracks subjective wellbeing using respondents’ own assessments of their lives and their positive and negative emotions. Once again Finland, Denmark and Iceland were the top three happiest countries.

Jukka Siukosaari, Finland’s ambassador to London, said his nation had managed to create an “infrastructure of happiness” including a “safe and secure environment”, affordable opportunities for people to express themselves culturally, and relatively equal incomes. “It all begins with high levels of trust between citizens and our institutions,” he said.

Costa Rica and Kuwait were new entrants to the top 20. Germany dropped from 16th to 24th. Afghanistan and Lebanon stayed as the two least happy nations. Countries that enjoyed increasing happiness included many African nations, Cambodia, Russia and China. Serbia recorded the biggest increase in happiness.

Childhood wellbeing and emotional health may be the best predictor for adult life satisfaction, the report found. Earlier research has concluded adolescents and young adults who report higher life satisfaction earn significantly higher levels of income later in life, even accounting for differences in education, intelligence, physical health and self-esteem.

Lord Layard, a Labour peer in the UK parliament and co-editor of the report, said child wellbeing should be a big issue at the general election expected to be held this year. “We need pledges to upgrade mental health support teams and to make them universal across the country. And life skills should be taught in every school,” he said.

Politics / As Obaseki Finally Goes For Shaibu’s Jugular by amoreobansu: 6:58pm On Mar 18
Those who say politics is a dirty game and a game where dogs-eat-dogs sure know what they are talking about. It is a game where there are no permanent enemies but permanent interests, Politics is a game where betrayal is taken as a part of the game. Politics is a game for the fittest, strongest and meanest.

In Edo State, what used to be a match made in heaven for Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Phillip Shaibu, has since not just turned sour, but as things appear now, only the total emasculation of Shaibu will be good enough and acceptable to Governor Obaseki.

And given his antecedent, Obaseki will not back down until Shaibu is completely ruined, politically and economically.

Shaibu’s sin is that he dared to contest for the office of the governor of the state. Obaseki has his preferred candidate and Shaibu’s position is that the contest be left open for all to try their popularity and acceptance by the Edo people.

Knowing the sheer size of the ego of our sitting governors, Shaibu’s temerity to go against the desire of Obaseki is a sin that cannot be forgiven, Of course, for daring to go the whole hog and fight for the ticket of the PDP, Shaibu should be prepared for the worst.

Asue Ighodalo, a former banker, and preferred choice of Obaseki recently won the PDP governorship ticket in Edo while Mr Shaibu, through a parallel primary election in which he was a lone candidate, claimed he was the rightful candidate of the party.

After denying him access to his office and relocating the office of the deputy governor, Obaseki also denied him his rights and privileges as deputy governor, in spite of the fact that they both jointly share the ticket. Having frustrated, harassed and intimidated him, what is left now for Obaseki is to ensure that every memory of Shaibu is erased from the state government record and to deny him whatever is due him after eight years as his deputy through impeachment.

And like all state assemblies, the Edo State Assembly is poised to carry out the biddings of Obaseki.

Shaibu, had in February alleged of a fresh plot to impeach him.

Shaibu, who had been declared winner of a factional governorship primary election that was reportedly held at his residence in Benin City, the state capital, said he would not be deterred as contesting the Edo governorship election is his constitutional right

Speaking in Abuja Shaibu said his team revealed the alleged plot to impeach him over his ambition.

“And I said, well, if fighting for my rights and all of us collectively fighting for our rights, which is in the constitution, can trigger impeachment, so be it because fighting for my rights and saying I must contest the election are my constitutional rights and cannot be taken by anybody. So, if constitutional right is why they will now trigger impeachment, the courts are there, they will interpret it.”

Recall that on July 28, Shaibu approached a federal high court in Abuja with a suit to prevent an alleged impeachment plot against him. Shaibu asked the court to restrain Obaseki, the speaker of the state assembly, and the chief judge, from “initiating impeachment proceedings or sanctioning any impeachment” against him.

On August 4, the court restrained Obaseki, the speaker, and other parties in the suit from initiating impeachment moves against Shaibu.

Reacting to the suit, Obaseki alleged that Shaibu wanted to kick him out of office ‘because of his desperation to succeed him’.

He also said there was no plan to impeach Shaibu.

On September 5, Shaibu withdrew the suit against Obaseki.

However, penultimate Wednesday, March 6 precisely, the Edo House of Assembly, commenced impeachment proceedings against Shaibu.

The Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian (PDP Ovia North-East 1), who announced the impeachment notice, said a petition dated 5 March against Mr. Shaibu, was signed by 21 of the 24 members of the legislature.

He added that the petition was based on perjury and the disclosure of government secrets.

Mr Aiguobarueghian noted that the number of members who signed the petition was higher than two-thirds which is required by the constitution.

Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku (PDP-Owan-West), who acknowledged receipt of the petition, directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the deputy governor.

Mr Agbebaku also gave the deputy governor seven days to respond to the notice of impeachment.

Meanwhile, Shaibu has denied that an impeachment notice was served on him.

However, the Assembly has directed that the impeachment notice be published in national dailies (by substitution) as it has become impossible to serve the deputy governor the letter in person.

It is rather unfortunate that our brand of democracy has remained a poor replica of how democracy is practised in the US from where we copied it from.

The very principle and letter of the separation of power is to allow for checks and balances and also ensure that all arms of government are put in check. Unfortunately, in our own experience, all other other arms of government are completely under the control of the executive. The worst culprits are the governors who are so powerful that they literally have the powers to decide who lives and who dies.

Of course, the Edo State Assembly is only acting on a script written and directed by Governor Obaseki, and woe betide them if they chose to, as much ask question, let alone, advise the governor against this bloated ego trip of his.

The perjury and the disclosure of government secrets allegations upon which the assembly is pursuing this shenanigan cannot hold water.

How has it become a crime to seek an office? Why has our brand of democracy allowed the governors so much power that they can get away with murder?

Obaseki must be enjoying the fact that everybody seems to be begging him not to carry out his plot against his deputy whose only offence is that he has chosen to decide his own destiny.

Knowing Obaseki for who he is, that pliable House would successfully carry out his biddings and impeach Shaibu, but he must be told that if there is any betrayal of trust between both of them, it is Obaseki who has betrayed Shaibu, after walking through thick and thin with him in his moments of trials, the least he could do is to at least allow him serve out his tenure as deputy governor. Obaseki is the one that has acted true to type by exhibiting his penchant for betraying those who had given him a shoulder to lean on during his moments of tribulation.

Politics / APC Begins E-registration Of Members by amoreobansu: 7:20pm On Mar 16
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the process of registering its over 40 million members electronically to consolidate its membership strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, said this when he received a delegation of elected Deputy National Officers and National Executive Committee members of the party at the secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday.

The development is coming two years after Mai Mala Buni-led National Caretaker Committee conducted a similar nationwide membership registration exercise, which brought the current number to over 40 million.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Ganduje said that the essence of the electronic registration innovation is to capture the current membership strength of the party.

Related News
The APC national chairman also decried the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, stressing the number of votes garnered by the party was a far cry from the actual strength of its registered members.

He said, “If you will recall, we had several 41 million members. But during the presidential election, we had only eight million. What happened to the rest? This is why we need to be digital and ensure that we are working with the correct data.

“Another step that we have taken is that we are reviewing our registration electronically now. The work has already started. You should be ready that all our members will be electronically registered so that we have an exact number physically.”

Continuing, the former Kano governor also revealed that the APC has concluded plans to establish a National Institute of Democratic Studies to help Nigerians shape their pattern of behaviour in alignment with democracy and political ideology.

Politics / Tinubu Encouraged Buhari To Print N22.7trn In 2020 - Atiku's Aide Blasts Finance by amoreobansu: 12:12pm On Mar 07
The spokesman of Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Paul Ibe, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu once encouraged former President Muhammadu Buhari to print naira in 2020.

Ibe made the disclosure while criticizing the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, over his comment on the printing of N22.7 trillion under Buhari’s administration.

Edun had said the printing of N22.7 trillion by the Central Bank of Nigeria in the name of a Ways and Means loan under Buhari’s government and ex-CBN governor Godwin Emefiele was responsible for the current rising inflation and economic hardship in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interface with the Senate Committee on Finance, the minister said the Ways and Means of loans of N22.7 trillion under the past administration was done aimlessly.

He further stated that the alleged reckless spending of the overdraft collected from the CBN under Emefiele largely accounted for the country’s food and security crises.

He vowed that Tinubu’s government would audit the CBN printing in the last eight years.

Reacting, Ibe faulted the minister’s remark stressing that Tinubu encouraged Buhari to toll such an irresponsible path in 2020.

Posting on Facebook, Ibe wrote: “Why is Wale Edun, who is more like oku eko (frozen fish) in this administration, bleating like a goat over the issue of Buhari’s printing of Naira? It was Bola Tinubu, as National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, who in 2020, encouraged Buhari on this irresponsible path of printing currency not matched with productivity.”

Foreign Affairs / Customs Give Condition For Reopening Of Nigeria’s Border With Niger Republic by amoreobansu: 2:17pm On Mar 06
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has provided explanations for its decision not to reopen the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had after its meeting on February 25 announced that it agreed to lift economic sanctions imposed on Niger Republic after the military take over power in the country.

But Customs Comptroller in charge of Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, Kamal Muhammad, said it is waiting for the last order to reopen Nigeria’s border with Niger.

“The lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and subsequent restoration of power supply to the neighbouring country are the reasons of my visit to ensure that all is set towards the re-opening of the Illela border as we await the last order,” Muhammad said.

He therefore charged Illela border community, marketers and other stakeholders to adhere to stipulated regulations as ECOWAS lift sanctions against Niger Republic.

The Customs boss said his inspection visit was to assess the situation and interact with officials of sister agencies, marketers and residents.

He solicited for more cooperation from the stakeholders and urged them to ensure harmonious working relationship at all times.

”My visit to Illela border station is to ensure that all is set in anticipation of the last order of the border re-opening.

“With collaboration, each agency will be able to effectively and efficiently fulfill its assigned mandate,” he said.

He disclosed that Customs had awarded a contract for the construction of a Primary Healthcare Center (PHC), at Illela border as part of its corporate social responsibility to the community

The Customs boss appreciated the licensed agents, traditional rulers and community members and encouraged them to support NCS with information to enable them serve the nation better.

He used the medium to sensitise the community to dangers of smuggling which, he said, was hindering economic growth.

Muhammad stressed the need for stakeholders to support NCS to achieve its constitutional mandate.

Responding on behalf of the border community, a traditional ruler, Alhaji Muhammadu, thanked the comptroller for the visit and assured him of maximum support to NCS and other sister agencies at the border.

Politics / N30 Trillion Was Printed, Shared Under Buhari’ – Northern Governor Reveals by amoreobansu: 8:00am On Mar 05
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has blamed the current economic hardship being faced by Nigerians on the last administration led by Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor alleged that Buhari supervised the printing and sharing of about N30 trillion.

Mutfwang stated this during the swearing-in of 22 Special Advisers and heads of government agencies at the Government House in Jos on Monday.

Mutfwang said Buhari left the country’s economy in terrible shape for his successor, President Tinubu.

“We are at a very difficult juncture in the history of this country and I’m an advocate that after the election you forget politics and face governance,” Mutfwang said.

“And even though the Federal Government is being led by a party other than my own, I owe you the duty to tell Nigerians the truth that this government inherited a worse situation than 1999.

“This government inherited an economy where we simply printed money up to the tune of N30tn and shared.

“This government inherited an economy where the crude oil we’re yet to take out of the ground had been sold in advance.

“So, when you’re talking about the fall of the naira, it’s not rocket science. We sold our future under the last administration.

“No wonder you’re hearing of riots today, people intercepting food on the way. We are lucky on the plateau that perhaps we have more food than many other states.

“And I pray that the time will not come on the Plateau that we will see this kind of riot for food, but it means we must roll up our sleeves and get to work.

“And that is why, for us as a government, when we announced one of the positions that talked about food security, people were laughing but it is a serious issue.”

The governor announced plans by his administration to set up a special agro-processing zone in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in partnership with the African Development Bank to the tune of $300 million.

He called on the new appointees to brace up for the challenge to enable his administration to reverse the ugly situation for the good of the people.

“And to tell you that some of the appointees, I don’t know them, but because we want to get things done, we’re looking for the right people,” he said.

Crime / 70 Percent Of Financial Crimes In Nigeria Connected To Banks - EFCC by amoreobansu: 7:49am On Mar 05
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has revealed that approximately 70 percent of financial crimes in Nigeria are connected to banks.

Chairman of the leading anti-graft agency, Ola Olukoyede, shared this information during his address in Abuja at the 2023 Annual Retreat and General Meeting of the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria.

The EFCC boss pointed out that the banking industry was becoming more characterized by fraudulent activities, posing significant challenges and concerns for the commission.

Olukoyede, represented by EFCC’s Director of Internal Audit, Idowu Apejoye, emphasized the importance of collaborative actions from relevant authorities and industry professionals, particularly audit executives, to proactively address and combat fraudulent activities within the sector.

“Broadly speaking, banking fraud in Nigeria is both inside and outside related. The inside related fraud comprises outright selling of customers’ deposits, authorising loan facilities, forgery and several other kinds of unhealthy and criminal practices,” he said.

“The outsider related ones include hacking, ATM fraud, conspiracy, among others. And then the absurd one is when both collaborate, that is collaboration among the bankers and the outsider.

“That one is the one that is really absurd because when you do that, that means you are selling out the system. It is estimated that about 70 per cent of financial crimes in Nigeria are traceable to the banking sector, this scenario is disturbing and unacceptable,” he added.

Politics / Approach Zimbabwe For Solution To Inflation, Obasanjo Tells FG by amoreobansu: 7:41am On Mar 05
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, advised that Nigeria should approach the government of Zimbabwe for a solution to the current all-time high inflation in the country.

He noted that since Zimbabwe was recently confronted with the same problem and came out of it, the southern African country would have useful advice for Nigeria.

In its latest release, the National Bureau of Statistics put Nigeria’s inflation at 29.9 per-cent.

The country is currently grappling with high cost of living, with pockets of protests breaking out across the country as Nigerians contend with increasing prices of foodstuffs.

Obasanjo, speaking on Monday at a youth leadership symposium as part of activities lined up for his 87th birthday, said Nigeria had Zimbabwe to learn from.

The symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

It was put together by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The ex-President said the times of challenges were not to give up but to face the problem head-on and draw lessons from those who encountered similar problems in the past and overcame.

He said, “When the time is rough and tough, the tough must get going..no problem is new and no problem will be permanent. Committing suicide is not the end of any problem, confront it and take it to God because he could do anything. When you have a problem look at those who have had this problem before and how they overcame it

“We have this problem of galloping inflation in the country now but do we have a country with such problems recently? Yes we do, Zimbabwe had this problem recently. Shouldn’t we ask them how they did it even if our approach will be different? Even if whatever we shall be doing will be different but we can ask questions to navigate our way out.”

Obasanjo also posited that dialogue, not guns or any form of violence, would help resolve the various conflicts on the African continent.

He said that like never before, conscious efforts to build and inculcate a culture of peace and security in the youth must be intensified to spur them to be at the vanguard of promoting peace rather than being used to perpetrate violence on the continent.

He said, “We must begin to bring up our youths in the culture of peace and security. The chances are where we have a culture of love, we will have peace. The first thing to do is to inculcate in the youths the ingredients of peace which is love and fellowship.

“Look at the attributes that God gave us to have a life of stability, life of peace, they are as I mentioned, kindness, mercy and forgiveness. All of these attributes are professed by God and He shared same with us to make life pleasant for us. But when we build negative attitudes, pull him down, then there will be a problem.”

He referenced biblical characters Esther, “who was able to secure her race from being exterminated,” and Joseph, “who helped to fight famine.”

“The youth must be at the vanguard of pursuing peace. They must be able to persuade those who believe that gun and violence is the way out of conflicts to have a rethink. The way out is conversation and dialogue.

“We have had our issues here during the civil war. We killed ourselves mercilessly and destroyed our best facilities but we still came back to the roundtable to get the challenge resolved.

“Youths must develop the culture of peace, the culture of humaneness, the culture of living the way God wants us to live,” Obasanjo added.

The coordinator of the programme and former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Peter Okebukola, said the essence of the symposium was to further drive home Obasanjo’s commitment to the African youths.

Okebukola, who is the Director of the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, said, “This event is a testament to the belief that it is not enough to grant young people a seat at the table; their involvement must be vital and meaningful.

“Through targeted interventions, inclusive policies, and international collaboration, we aim to empower West African youths as catalysts for positive change, paving the way for a more peaceful and harmonious society.”
