Crime / Egypt Condemns Nigeria Terror Attack That Claimed Around 100 Lives by amoreobansu: 6:52pm On Sep 04
CAIRO – 4 September 2024: Egypt condemned Wednesday the terror attack launched against Mafa village in Yobe state eastern Nigeria, incurring dozens of casualties.

The statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences on the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It also affirmed solidarity with Nigeria's counterterrorism efforts, and endeavors to accomplish security and stability.

On Sunday, 150 Boko Haram terrorists raided the village riding motorcycles, shooting at shoppers in a market, and torching stores and homes. Thirty-seven bodies were retrieved, while there are estimates that the death toll could be 100.

The attack is likely a retaliatory act as two Boko Haram terrorists had been killed by residents earlier, as reported by Reuters. The terrorist group has been active in Yobe among other states for 15 years, killed thousands of Nigerians, and caused the displacement of around two million.

Politics / NNPC And Those Who Plan To “remove” Tinubu by amoreobansu: 5:49pm On Sep 03
TUESDAY WITH BY REUBEN ABATI

“Hello, Bros. Hello. Hello. Hello”

“Yes. I can hear you”

“Which kin thing be this now? I don dey call you since, you no pick call. Person go dey call you, you no go pick.”

“At your level, you should know that if you call somebody once or twice and the phone rings, the best thing to do is to leave a message and expect the person to call back.”

“I called you up to ten times.”

“Why? Once you call a person twice, leave a message or send a text. Do I owe you money? You Nigerians do not know how to use a phone. You think if you call me, I must answer you compulsorily. I do not respond to such calls. All the people who call me up and down are people who want to beg for money. In this Tinubu Nigeria, if you call me and up and down, I won’t answer. I may even block your line because the desperation is a serious signal, that a hungry Nigerian is calling me. I did not cause inflation oh, let nobody come and disturb me. All of you who voted for APC in 2015, 2019 and 2023, carry your cross. Do you know some people even have the effrontery to come and ask me to help pay for their wives’ hospital bills in the maternity ward. If you have enough strength to impregnate a woman, when it is nine months and the result comes out, carry your own cross. The notice is long enough. I don’t want to hear that nonsense about helping the neighbour. Neighbour wey no get common sense.”

“So, am I one of those persons who will disturb you for hospital bills? When person call you, make you pick”

“I dey unavailable that time. Davido says I am unavailable. Dem no dey see me. The network must have told you that the line you were calling was not available at the time. So, what’s up, Omo? I have a busy day.”

“Have you seen what I am seeing in the papers today? They say NNPC Limited is facing financial strain, financial pressure and that is why there is fuel scarcity, and long queues. NNPC says it is overburdened by debt obligations running into about $6.8 billion”

“I thought they said it was weather and bad roads causing the fuel supply disruptions, and that even if they were owing, it is in the nature of the business to source credit.”

“We are in September. The weather condition will soon change from rainy season to dry season in Nigeria. There is a limit to which anyone can blame the weather and the roads. The truth has now been let out of the bag. My question to you is what do you think this implies?”

“It is obvious. NNPCL is the breadwinner of Nigeria. If the company says it is under financial pressure, it is as good as saying that Nigeria is financially bankrupt. When you link that to the fact that NNPCL is the sole importer of finished products in the downstream sector, it means that the NNPC Limited has no money to import more PMS, and that would create supply problems and translate into fuel scarcity and longer queues at the fuel stations. Very simple.”

“Nigeria produces over 1.3 million barrels of crude per day. How is that possible? NNPC Limited can sell crude and make money.”

“Sorry. Your 1.3 million, 1.4 million barrels have already been used to take loans upfront from Afrexim Bank and other sources. You produce the crude; you use it to pay existing debts. It is a perfect storm.”

“But what of the plan to have an Operation and Maintenance concession with private investors at the Warri and Kaduna Refineries?”

“It is called O and M. If you are an investor, I ask you, will you go and invest your resources in the same refineries that the Nigerian Government has not been able to fix for the past 20 years? Not even the Chinese who are looking for every possible opportunity in Africa will go near that. Why do you think the multinationals are very careful with Nigeria and some of them are using style, style to reduce their risk margins in Nigeria?nbsp; A country that cannot protect its biggest assets cannot be trusted. Investors look at risk factors. And I don’t think that refineries should be for concession. They should be privatized. Or sold as scrap. The Nigerian Government cannot run refineries.”

“President Tinubu is in China. He is talking to the Chinese looking for more investments. We pray that he succeeds at the Forum for China- Africa Co-operation (FOCAC)”

“I hear everybody is in China too, with some of your Ministers behaving like they have seen Heaven, the same Heaven that they cannot create here in Nigeria”

“Don’t mind those ones. Very soon there will be a cabinet reshuffle and they will be sent out”

“How can you be so sure?”

“I am not sure of anything. I just think that the President should return to the country to address the many matters arising. He is Minister of Petroleum, and the fuel queues have not disappeared. There is flooding in many of the states.”

“The President does not have to be on the ground for the country to run properly. That is why he has appointed people to do the job. The fuel scarcity issue is simple. I wish the government can deal with all the rent collectors in the oil and gas sector. They are the ones causing the problems and they are all over the system. The fuel marketers. The fuel depot owners. The middlemen. The thieves. Tinubu did not cause the crisis. This is one of those things that Tinubu inherited. He is trying to clear the rot in the land. His situation is compounded by the fact that he is coming as President after eight years of Buhari, whose government is remembered for its sleep-walking for eight years!”

‘Buhari. Hmm. Have you noticed that since he left office more than one year ago, nobody, I mean nobody, I mean no institution or platform anywhere in the world has invited him to come and give a lecture on any subject, not even cattle rearing? Even his Vice President gets invited all over the world. President Jonathan has been busy virtually every month since he left office in 2015. President Tinubu has a lot to worry about taking over from Buhari”.

“I am hearing that the Federal Government may increase fuel price. The Minister of State for Petroleum has said that PMS must be sold above the landing cost, at the open market price to stop smuggling and ensure sustainable fuel supply.”

“One, I don’t think the fuel subsidy regime which government had to go back to is sustainable. It only benefits the rent collectors of Nigeria. Two, I am worried about fuel price going through the roof. What would be the open market price of PMS? N2, 000?”

“People are already buying fuel at over N1, 000”

“We have issues with foreign exchange. If we don’t strengthen the Naira, people will groan.”

“As an economist, I think the pain may be for about two months, then things will stabilize and the market will adjust and self-correct.”

“Please leave economics out of this matter. No economic theory works in Nigeria. When prices go up in this environment, they will refuse to come down and the government will be confronted with another problem.”

“But I hear the Dangote Refinery has started production, up to about 70 to 80%. If they pressurize the refinery further, production levels for PMS could reach 90%.”

“What you do not know is that Dangote Refinery is a private business. Oil business is international. Dangote Refinery is not a charity outfit. They will sell at open market price and in any case NNPC limited has not yet reached an agreement with the Refinery as to how much fuel should be sold.”

“Are we helpless then? Will fuel price go up?”

“Things will get worse before they get better.”

“But how about this thing I am hearing that one British national, Andrew Wynne is working with some other persons to remove Tinubu. The Police have declared a certain Drew Povey, also a Briton wanted for subversive activities against Tinubu’s government. Povey is accused of renting a space at Labour House in Abuja as a cover for his activities which includes the funding of protests to create anarchy in Nigeria.”

“The same Povey says he has been running an innocent business in Nigeria for about seven years and that he has never done anything wrong.”

“A sleeper cell in Labour House, shortly after the NLC President was invited by the Police for terrorism related issues? I sense something here. But my position, Bros is that nobody should ever think of talking about removing Tinubu’s government. Britons coming to Nigeria to remove government? That would be pure madness. Anybody that tries any nonsense. No, it is not even trying, if anybody gets so reckless as to think of it, that person and his or her collaborators should be summarily executed. When a Northerner was in power, nobody talked about removing anybody. Now that it is our turn, some animals are talking about removing. This country belongs to all of us. Whoever is frustrated, hungry or angry should wait till the general elections in 2027, and make a choice at the polling station.”

“I agree with you. The Nigerian Military has also pledged their loyalty to the President and the Nigerian state. Even the Police.”

“The Police have no option. The retirement age for policemen has just been extended by the Senate from 60 to 65 years. The IGP, Kayode Egbetokun has been granted a grace period of four more years.”

“Well, well, well. I really don’t have a problem with that. The extension is not for Egbetokun alone. Other policemen will benefit from it, and every government has a right and the privilege to adopt its own directions. In the. UK, Sir Keir Starmer wants to stop winter fuel privileges. He wants to introduce a more stringent tax regime. The only thing that bothers me is that I know one police officer who is always terrorizing other people, threatening to lock people up. What this new law means is that he would spend more time wearing the police uniform. Useless man.”

“The general belief out there is that the retirement age for policemen was revised just to keep Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police. He is a Tinubu man, they say. And Tinubu wants his own person in that office.”

“I don’t get it. If you are President, will you as Tinubu appoint Peter Obi’s person or Atiku’s person as IGP? These are commonsense things. What we should expect is performance and better quality from the Nigeria Police Force.”

“You know what I am thinking?”

“What?”

“With all these problems that we are facing in Nigeria, why would the President buy a new Tokunbo Presidential jet? Why would a member of the National Assembly of Nigeria collect as much as N21 million per month at a time NNPC Ltd says it is facing financial constraints?”

“You have a point. Nigerian leaders should be seen to identify with the people. Yes. But purchase of PMS is not the same as buying a presidential jet or the N21 million that Senators collect. It doesn’t show on them anyway. Many of these our lawmakers look miserable.”

“It is just that I expect higher standards of conduct.”

“From who? From Comrade Senator Adams Oshiomhole for example?”

“Ha. Comrade oh Comrade. I am his fan oh. And I like his contributions on the floor of the Senate. His intervention on the National Anthem issue. His request that the Nigerian military must account for all the money that they collected to fight terrorism and banditry. But Comrade drop person hand oh, with his attack on Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, the wife of Governor Obaseki of Edo State, publicly calling her a barren woman, and asking the couple why they have failed to adopt a child.”

“I was shocked too. When did Comrade Oshiomhole become a family planning expert. And who ask am question? Wetin concern am?”

“He was actually defending the APC Gubernatorial candidate in Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, after Mrs Obaseki while introducing Mrs Ifeyinwa Ighodalo to the women electorate in Ubiaja, South East Local Government said that it is only the PDP candidate that has a wife among all the Gubernatorial aspirants in Edo State. She did not mention anybody’s name.”

“Having a wife or a child is not a pre-requisite for becoming a Governor. There is no such thing in the Nigerian Constitution. But even if the innuendo lands perfectly where it is targeted, what is Oshiomhole’s own in the matter? We hear more from him than from the APC candidate himself. He has become Okpebholo’s spokesman and campaign manager. I sympathize with the people of Edo State. Instead of their politicians talking about issues – how to fix roads, generate employment, create jobs, promote prosperity, what we now hear is gutter politics – who has a wife who does not have, who has children, who does not have. Who has DSTV, who does not. Terrible”

“I think the Comrade Senator owes the Obasekis an apology. Politics or no politics, there are things an elder should not say. When JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate in the US election played the same fertility card referring to Kamala Harris as a “childless cat”, there was an uproar. There must be decorum in politics.”

“Sometimes I actually think that the whole world is going mad. Look at what the South African did to Chidinma Adesina. They pursued her out of the Miss South Africa Beauty Pageant. They threw all kinds of things at her: They said she was married or divorced, the organizers said it did not matter, they said her mother is an identity thief and that she is actually from Mozambique. Nobody remembered that Nelson Mandela, father of modern South Africa also married a former First Lady from Mozambique. When Chidinma was invited to participate in the Miss universe pageant in Nigeria, South African netizens pursued her still. They gave their votes to Miss Kwara. But in the end Miss Chdinma Adesina emerged victorious. A very big story about xenophobia, national identity politics, Nigeria South Africa relations and the love-hate relationship between the peoples of both countries.”

“Quite a moving human story. Congratulations to Chdinma Adesina. Thanks to all the fans who gave her the 15, 482 votes that brought her victory. Perhaps not everyone is going crazy. Some people will always stand by you, no matter what.”

“What do you think of Nyesom Wike saying he would fight anybody that supports Governor Fubara of Rivers state, be such a person a Governor of another state or anybody at all?”

“Please, Bros, I think my phone is out of credit. I sincerely do not want to discuss Wike.”

Politics / Cabals In Nigeria Frustrating Dangote Refinery - Obasanjo by amoreobansu: 2:33pm On Aug 06
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concerns that those currently profiting from Nigeria's profitable fuel importation sector may seek to undermine the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

This statement follows allegations by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, who has accused certain 'mafias' of attempting to sabotage his $20 billion refinery project.

The refinery has not started buying crude oil in naira yet, even though President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to do so.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo suggested that if the refinery succeeds, it could boost investment from both Nigerians and foreigners.

He said, "Aliko's investment in a refinery, if it goes well, should encourage both Nigerians and non-Nigerians to invest in Nigeria.

"If those who are selling or supplying refined products for Nigeria feel that they will lose the lucrative opportunity, they will also make every effort to get him frustrated."

Officials of the Dangote Group recently cried out that international oil companies are hampering the refinery by either refusing to sell crude or charging up to $4 above the standard price.

They also accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority of intentionally issuing licenses to individuals for importing contaminated fuel.

The regulator denied this, saying Dangote diesel was inferior when compared to imported ones.

The NMDPRA Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, also stated that the country would not stop fuel importation to avoid a monopoly by the Dangote Group.

Obasanjo further remarked that Nigeria made a critical error by focusing solely on oil, neglecting opportunities in gas and agriculture.

"I believe we made a very, very deadly mistake. We put all our eggs in one basket of oil. We even ignored gas. We were flaring gas, which is a very important commodity

"We ignored agriculture, which should have been the centrepiece of our economic development," Obasanjo stated.

He recalled attempting to persuade Shell to operate Nigeria's refineries, but the company refused, citing excessive corruption in the sector.

"When I was president, I invited shell to come and take equity and run our refineries for us. They refused and said our refineries were not well maintained. We brought amateurs instead of professionals. Then there was too much corruption with the way our refineries were maintained. They didn't want to get involved in such a mess,' he said.

"How many times have they told us that the refineries would be fixed, and at what price? Those problems as far as the government refineries are concerned have never gone. They have even increased. And if you have such problems, and the problems have not been removed, then, it means we are not going anywhere."

The former president also criticized President Bola Tinubu's approach to removing fuel subsidies, arguing that the administration should have first considered the potential hardships and ways to alleviate them.

"There's a lot of work that needs to be done. Not just wake up one morning and say you removed the subsidy. Because of inflation, the subsidy that we have removed is not gone. It has come back," Obasanjo stressed.

Politics / Islamic Cleric Recalls Tinubu Boasting “I Bought This Presidential Seat With My by amoreobansu: 12:52pm On Aug 03
Sokoto-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Bello Yabo has claimed that President Bola Tinubu admitted to clerics and traditional rulers that he used his personal funds to secure the presidency. In a recent video of one of his sermons, Yabo recounted Tinubu’s disclosure during a meeting at the villa last week.....

He said, “Tinubu has really impressed me; he invited all the traditional rulers from the North, West, and East and told them bluntly that ‘I bought this seat I’m on with money,’” Yabo stated.

He praised Tinubu for his candor, remarking, “Tinubu has never impressed me like now for coming out to tell the naked truth. Whoever pays the piper dictates the tune; isn’t Tinubu telling the truth?”

Yabo criticized those who sold their votes during the 2023 presidential elections, highlighting the fleeting nature of the rewards they received.

“You have eaten the spaghetti and macaroni you have been given to vote, and now it is finished, it’s all over, so what next?” he asked, referencing Tinubu’s substantial campaign spending from the primaries to the presidential election.

Reflecting on the future, Yabo urged, “It’s all over now; let us pray and wait for the next election in 2027. If you like, collect his money again and vote for him, and I assure you, you’ll remain in pain, that’s all.”

Tinubu’s remarks at the meeting last week emphasized his self-funding campaign, stating, “I have no cabal. I have no sponsors. The money I spent on the elections was my personal fortune. At some point, the odds were against me; banks were locked. But Allah, the Almighty God, said I will be the president.

Your grammar is extremely poor for someone assumed to be a university graduate. undecided

Informal Language and Tone:
Phrases like "See as tone don dey change" and "Gone are the days" are informal and use colloquial language. These should be rephrased for clarity and formality.

Grammar and Structure:
"That they will see how he will operate without them" is grammatically incorrect. It should be clarified.
"Now, they are equally lamenting why Dangote is buying crude from other countries" can be more concise and clear.
"Who would lose if Dangote gets his crude oil from outside Nigeria?" needs slight rephrasing for better flow.

Punctuation:
Missing commas and periods need to be added for better readability.

Clarity and Conciseness:
The overall message is clear but can be more concise and professional.

Corrected Version
Notice how the tone has changed.

Gone are the days when some people boasted that they would not sell their oil to Dangote because he did not site his refinery in their region. They claimed they would see how he could operate without their support.

Now, they are lamenting that Dangote is buying crude from other countries.

Who stands to lose if Dangote sources his crude oil from outside Nigeria?

The answer lies in their cries of sabotage—self-destructive sabotage.

Grammatical Pedantry Syndrome
It used to be we thought that people who went around correcting other people's grammar were just plain annoying. Now there's evidence they are actually ill, suffering from a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder/oppositional defiant disorder (OCD/ODD). Researchers are calling it Grammatical Pedantry Syndrome, or GPS.

Education / ASUU Rejects Gawuna, Others On Governing Council Of BUK, Favours Udoma’s Return by amoreobansu: 12:45pm On Jun 22
KANO – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano, BUK chapter during the weekend rejected the appointment of Kano top flight politician, Dr Nasiru Gawuna into the Governing Council of the second generation tertiary Institution.

Addressing newsmen in its secretariat, the Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj said that the process that led to the appointment of politicians into the Governing Council of the nation’s citadel of learning contravened the relevant laws that guided such appointment.

Comrade Siraj explained that “I must admit that we are not happy over the decision of the federal government to appoint hard core politicians into the Governing Council.

Siraj stressed that “the criteria for such appointments is explicitly clear, as it favoured the appointment of technocrats, academic to the Council”.

He therefore called on the federal government to reinstate Senator Udo Udoma led Governing Council to complete their term in the interests of the rule of law

Siraj stressed that “the scenario is just like sacking an executive governor of a state after just one in office, and you went ahead to assume that all is normal, no, this is rape on the rule of law.”

Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, earlier had led (ASUU), Bayero University Kano branch, on a peaceful protest on Friday demanding the federal government to pay their entitlements and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement.

Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, said the action was in compliance with the directive by the national body to all its branches to organize protests within their campuses on account of the federal government’s failure to pay their entitlements.

Politics / “It’ll Destroy Your Presidency” – Galadima Warns Tinubu To Stay Away From Kano P by amoreobansu: 3:46pm On Jun 18
Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has urged the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu to refrain from intervening in Kano State’s political matters.

The warning comes amidst controversy over the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, following the enactment of the new Kano Emirate Council Law and the deposition of Aminu Bayero.

In an interview with Arise Television on Monday, Galadima cautioned Tinubu, asserting that any interference in Kano politics could jeopardize his presidency.

His words: “I want to tell the Federal Government, including my friend, President Bola Tinubu, that he should be mindful of Kano politics, it will destroy his presidency.

“I know some very powerful politicians in Kano, including some rich men who came to meet the president, that they should remove Abba Yusuf and nothing will happen.

“The man I know should be smarter than what he is by telling that nothing will happen and ask them that how did it happen that you didn’t win the election in the first place.”

Galadima concluded by drawing a parallel to the Boko Haram insurgency, warning that Kano’s political issues could be equally challenging.

“If Boko Haram can hold the Nigerian nation to ransom for the last 13 to 14 years, they should be careful with Kano. We have come of age in Kano and I am not threatening anyone. That is all I can say,” he added.

Politics / N40,000 In 2015 Equivalent To N500,000 Now - Dagogo by amoreobansu: 2:08pm On Jun 15
A former member of the National Assembly, Dr Farah Dagogo, has lamented the value of the Nigerian currency saying, “the value of ₦40, 000 in 2015 is equivalent to over ₦500, 000 in today’s Nigeria.”

He also charged the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to come up with workable economic policies that will ameliorate the sufferings and hardships the majority of Nigerians are experiencing.

Dagogo described the current living standards and situations in the country as ‘grim’, raising concerns that all indicators point to ‘ further pains for the citizenry’

Dagogo who represented Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives while in office.

In a special Eid-ul-Adha message to Muslims faithful across the country, the former Federal Lawmaker wondered why the people would continue to languish and wallow in so much misery amid the country’s abundant natural resources.

He said this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday morning by his media aide, Ibrahim Lawal, and sent to newsmen.

The statement reads, Today, yesterday and especially in the past year, the people’s purchasing powers have reduced drastically. Never has this country witnessed this level of hyperinflation in its history, not even during our civil war. It is a grim reality.

The value of ₦40, 000 in 2015 is equivalent to over ₦500, 000 in today’s Nigeria in 2024. Crisss-cross the costs of goods and services during this period and vis-a-vis the reality of today and we all will come to that sad realisation. That was why labour was justifiably demanding for a living wage.

The inconsolable unavoidable truth is that the value of the money most people are getting or earning in 2024 is not too different from that of 2015, but the purchasing powers have practically gone out the window.”

He added, “Anti-people and inhuman economic policies have helped put the people in a terrible state. Money that could comfortably procure over 10 50kg bags of rice in 2015 can only buy one now, yet no improvement in the real money in the hands of the people.

“Something has to give way, this cannot continue. These sufferings and hardships have to be remedied. Unfortunately, optics point to further pains for the citizenry.”

While taking a cue from the central message of Eid-ul-Adha, which also means festival of sacrifice, Dr Dagogo salutes Nigerians for their sacrifices and resilience over these difficult periods, especially in the past one year.

The ex-federal legislator, however, challenged the government to be above board and “walk the talk of renewing the citizenry’s hope.

“The government promises, pledges and policies, as of now, are mere cosmetics without any corresponding positivities on the majority of Nigerians.

“It behooves this government to walk the talk of renewing the citizenry’s hope. The much-touted renewed hope should reflect its literary meaning and not renew hardships and suffering as being experienced all across the country, ” Dagogo added.

You forgot to mention the dire situation our country is in. Someone could go to bed tonight and by morning, we'd hear they've passed away. They couldn't even afford the basic food you mentioned.

My fellow Nairalanders, have you noticed the alarming rate at which people are dying these days? Almost 70 percent of deaths now are sudden.

Who has money for suya and shawarma these days? Even a simple stew is beyond reach for many.

If the north was the one with crude Nigeria has in SS, I can bet that one barrel of unrefined crude will not be exported.
Just look at agriculture. They process most of whatever they produce.
When last did we invest massively in cash crops in the south like the FG is doing for the north? When last was cocoa or coffee or rubber planted massively?

If you ask me about the best region in Nigeria, I would say the South-South. The people there are incredibly tolerant and remarkable. Despite their significant contributions to the nation, especially through the oil industry, they have not agitated for independence like other regions.

Thumbs up to my South-South people. I love you all so much.

Imagine if the crude oil were located in the Southeast, Southwest, or Northern regions. But God, in His wisdom, placed it in the South-South, knowing the kind-hearted and good people who reside there.

Thumbs up to my South-South people. I love you all so much.

Health / 1 In 3 Children In Nigeria Experiences Severe Child Food Poverty Due To Conflict by amoreobansu: 7:12pm On Jun 08
ABUJA, 7 June 2024 – Around 11 million children, or one in every three children under five years of age, in Nigeria are experiencing severe child food poverty, making them up to 50 per cent more likely to experience wasting, a life-threatening form of malnutrition, a new UNICEF report reveals today.

For the first time, the Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood report analyses the impacts and causes of dietary deprivation among the world’s youngest and most vulnerable, i.e. children under five years of age, in nearly 100 countries, and across income groups. Globally, 181 million children under the age of five who consume, at most, two of eight defined food groups are considered in severe child food poverty and unable to sustain optimal growth and development in early childhood and beyond. Nigeria ranks among the 20 countries that account for almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of the 181 million children living in severe child food poverty.

Globally, four out of five children experiencing child food poverty are fed only breastmilk/milk and/or a starchy staple, such as rice, maize, or wheat. Less than 10 per cent of these children are fed fruits and vegetables. And even fewer, less than 5 per cent, are fed nutrient-dense foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, or meat.

The report warns that while countries are still recovering from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of growing inequities, conflicts, and the climate crisis have pushed food prices and the cost of living to record high levels. A recently published report by the Government and partners titled Cadre Harmonisé estimates that nearly 32 million people across 26 states of Nigeria are food insecure during this year’s lean season between June and August.

Globally and in Nigeria, several factors are fueling the child food poverty crisis, including food systems that fail to provide children with nutritious, safe and accessible options, families’ inability to afford nutritious foods, and parents’ inability to adopt and sustain positive child feeding practices.

Cheap, nutrient-poor and unhealthy ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages are aggressively marketed to parents and families and are the new normal for feeding children. These unhealthy foods and beverages are consumed by an alarming proportion of young children experiencing food poverty, displacing more nutritious and healthier foods from their daily diets.

The report shows that in Nigeria, the number of children facing serious hunger is much higher in the poorest families (44%) compared to the richest families (17%). Despite such high numbers of children affected with severe child food poverty, Nigeria has demonstrated a steady decline in the proportion of children facing severe food poverty from 45% in 2012 to 32% in 2022. However, much more needs to be done to ensure that every child has access to and consumes a diverse diet.

“Children grappling with severe child food poverty are more likely to face the life-threatening consequences of wasting, thereby impacting their survival and growth,” said UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Cristian Munduate. “We urgently need to work together to address child food poverty and make nutritious options more accessible and affordable, especially for vulnerable families.”

To end child food poverty, UNICEF calls on governments, development and humanitarian organizations, donors, civil society and the food and beverage industry to urgently:

To accelerate actions to prevent, detect and treat severe child food poverty and malnutrition, the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF) was launched in Nigeria last year with the support of several partners. The CNF is a UNICEF-led multi-partner financing mechanism that incentivizes domestic investments to end child malnutrition. So far, four states have released funds to the CNF, while another nine states have pledged their commitments. UNICEF urges governments, donors and financial partners to support the CNF and prioritise practices to end severe child food poverty and malnutrition.

Categories of child food poverty
If children are fed:
0–2 food groups/day, they are living in severe child food poverty,

3–4 food groups/day, they are living in moderate child food poverty,

5 or more food groups/day, they are not living in child food poverty.

[NH1]@Anike Alli-Hakeem do we mean four out of five children experiencing severe food poverty are….. (if yes, I would recommend we edit to make it explicit), thanks.

The minister stated this during the commissioning of the Guzape Lot II Infrastructure Project in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“Since I assumed office in August 21, 2023, you have never one day interfered in my work,” Wike said to the applause of the gathering.

“Never one day have you called me that this is what you want, you have never. Sometimes, I pretend I will come to you and say, ‘Are there people complaining?’ You will tell me ‘Have I ever called you one day? So don’t bother yourself, go and do your job.’

“I must say I and the Minister of State, we are sincerely happy that you gave us the free hand to work and this is what we are seeing today.”

The minister also pledged the FCT Administration’s commitment to complete the projects in the diplomatic area of Abuja.

He assured the President that the projects would be completed by next year, describing the area as a preferred residential choice for most Nigerians.

Politics / Nigerian Governors With Billions In Unaccounted Security Votes Reject N60,000 Mi by amoreobansu: 8:47pm On Jun 07
Nigerian governors with billions in unaccounted security votes reject N60,000 minimum wage

“The NGF cautions parties in this important discussion to look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it.”

Nigerian state governors, who are recipients of billions of naira in unaccounted monthly security votes remittance from the federal government, have rejected the N60,000 minimum wage proposal, saying the amount is “unattainable” for them, thus “cannot fly”.

“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum is in agreement that a new minimum wage is due. The Forum also sympathises with labour unions in their push for higher wages,” a statement issued on Friday by the director of media and public affairs for NGF Halimah Ahmed said.

“All things considered, the NGF holds that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal is not sustainable and can not fly. It will simply mean that many states will spend all their FAAC allocations on just paying salaries with nothing left for development purposes. In fact, a few states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month. We do not think this will be in the collective interest of the country, including workers.”

The FG and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have been at loggerheads over the implementation of a new minimum wage for workers that will reflect the current economic realities. Organised labour later embarked on a short strike after both parties failed to reach an agreement.

However, the NLC, on Tuesday, called off the strike for five days after the Nigerian government and labour unions signed an agreement which included the FG’s commitment to a minimum wage of more than N60,000 within the time frame.

With less than 24 hours before the agreement elapses and as FG prepares for an increased proposal to NLC, Nigerian governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), have rejected the initial N60,000 proposal, tagging the amount too high for them to pay.

“However, the Forum urges all parties to consider the fact that the minimum wage negotiations also involve consequential adjustments across all cadres, including pensioners. The NGF cautions parties in this important discussion to look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it; any agreement to be signed should be sustainable and realistic.”

Politics / 36 Governors Finally Speak On What They Can Pay As Minimum Wage, Details Emerge by amoreobansu: 4:15pm On Jun 07
FCT, Abuja - State governors under the umbrella of the Nigeria Governors' Forum have reportedly ruled out the option of paying N100,000 and above as the new minimum wage.

At their meeting on Thursday, June 6, the governors were said to have considered a minimum wage between N60,000 and N70,000.

Minimum wage: How much will governors pay? According to The Nation, state leaders reviewed the country's economic situation and concluded that anything above N70,000 would not be sustainable and affordable.

The governors then ruled out the option of paying N100,000 as many people have suggested. Sources familiar with the issue said the governors could not reach a conclusion on what should be paid between the N60,000 earlier proposed by the federal government and the N70,000 currently being paid by the Edo state government.

Imo governor leads committee on minimum wage. It was gathered that at the meeting, the governors set up a committee, headed by Hope Uzodinma of Imo state, to review the minimum wage. Uzodinma is also currently the chairman of the progressives governors forum, which is a platform for governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governors' stance echoed the previous statement from the NGF and the governor of Kwara state, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, that they would only agree to an 'affordable and sustainable' minimum wage.

The meeting of the governors comes after a recent industrial action by organised labour, which started on Monday, June 3 but was suspended temporarily afterwards to allow for further deliberation.

Politics / Yusuf thanks Tinubu for donating 70 fertilizer trucks to Kano farmers by amoreobansu: 5:42pm On Jun 06
The Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his generous donation of 70 trucks of fertilizer in support of agricultural activities in Kano. This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.

During the inauguration of rural access roads in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, the governor announced that the President had graciously provided 70 trucks of fertilizer to be promptly distributed to farmers in the state.

The governor expressed his delight and extended his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the government and the people of Kano for the President’s gesture.

“Kano remains steadfast in its commitment to agricultural transformation by ensuring the accessibility and affordability of high-quality agricultural inputs to enhance crop production within the state” he said.

Previously, the governor had directed the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) to begin extensive production of fertilizer in preparation for the upcoming rainy season, with the objective of aiding smallholder farmers across the state.

As one of Nigeria’s leading crop-producing states, Kano is blessed with vast arable land suitable for cultivating staple crops such as rice, maize, soybeans, groundnuts, sesame, hibiscus, and sorghum.

Politics / UN Report: Acute Food Insecurity May Hit Nigeria, 17 Other Countries by amoreobansu: 6:03am On Jun 06
Acute food insecurity is set to increase in magnitude and severity in 18 hunger “hotspots,” including Nigeria, a new United Nations (UN) early warning report has revealed.

The report released recently spotlighted the urgent need of assistance to prevent famine in Gaza and the Sudan, and further deterioration in the devastating hunger crises in Haiti, Mali, and South Sudan.

It also warned about the lingering impact of El Niño and the looming threat of La Niña that risked bringing further climate extremes that could upend lives and livelihoods.

It stated, “Since the previous edition of the Hunger Hotspots report (October 2023), the Central African Republic, Lebanon, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zambia have joined Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Malawi, Somalia and Zimbabwe in the list of hunger hotspots, where acute food insecurity is likely to deteriorate further during the outlook period,”.

The report found that many hotspots faced growing hunger crises and highlighted the worrying multiplier effect that simultaneous and overlapping shocks were having on acute food insecurity. It noted that conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks continued to drive vulnerable households into food crises.

The report warned that 2023 was likely to mark the first year since 2010, in which humanitarian funding had declined compared to the previous year, but it still represented the second highest funding level ever for humanitarian assistance.

FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu said, “The daunting prospects highlighted in this report should serve as a wake-up call to all of us. We need to spearhead the shift from responding to crises after they occur to more proactive anticipatory approaches, prevention and resilience building to help vulnerable communities cope with upcoming shocks.

“Acting ahead of crises can save lives, reduce food shortages and protect livelihoods at a much lower cost than a not timely humanitarian response.”

On his part, the WFP Executive Director, Cindy McCain said, “Once a famine is declared, it is too late – many people will have already starved to death. In Somalia in 2011, half of the quarter of a million people who died of hunger perished before famine was officially declared.

“The world failed to heed the warnings at the time and the repercussions were catastrophic. We must learn the lesson and act now to stop these hotspots from igniting a firestorm of hunger,” adding that: “We have proven solutions to stop these crises in their tracks, but we need the resources and the political will to implement them at scale before more lives are lost.”

The report also noted that ongoing conflict in Palestine was expected to further aggravate already catastrophic levels of acute hunger, with starvation and death already taking place, alongside the unprecedented death toll, widespread destruction and displacement of nearly the total population of the Gaza Strip.

Politics / El-Rufai's Gang Looted Kaduna For Eight Years - Shehu Sani by amoreobansu: 10:16pm On Jun 05
Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has recalled how he raised an alarm over how ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai and those around him allegedly systematically looted the state for eight years.

Sani said El-Rufai and his alleged gangs were deceiving people with aesthetics in the state while they were looting.

He was reacting to the report by the Kaduna State Assembly that indicted El-Rufai’s administration.

The assembly claimed that El-Rufai’s administration embezzled over N423 billion.

In its report, the assembly called for the investigation and prosecution of the former governor.

Reacting, Sani posted on X: “For eight years, I stood alone, telling the people of Kaduna State and the country how our state was systematically looted by the governor and the criminal gang around him.

“The people inside and outside the state were deceived with aesthetics and industrial-scale propaganda. They wrecked the economy of the state, enriched themselves and their families, destroyed the lives and livelihoods of millions of people and used religion to divide our state.

“I was persecuted and many attempts were made on my life and that of my supporters. Many politicians in the state were silenced out of fear of arrest, attacks by thugs or having their properties confiscated or demolished. I refused to be silenced. The Kaduna Assembly report is a vindication.”

Politics / El-rufai's Government Withdrew N1.4trn From State Account - Kaduna Assembly by amoreobansu: 10:06pm On Jun 05
El-Rufai's government withdrew N1.4trn from state account - Kaduna Assembly
The chairman of the Kaduna State House Committee on Information, Henry Marah Zachariah, has come up with some revelations on the financial activities of the El-Rufai administration.

The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday set up a 13-man committee to probe financial dealings, loans, grants and other project implementations from 2015–2023 under former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure.

Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts, who is also the Deputy Minority Whip, Honourable Mugu Yusuf, who moved the motion, said the public needed to know what happened during that period, adding that the House also mandated the committee to invite notable personalities that served during the period, including contractors, to explain how the loans and grants received during the period under review were spent.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai had on Wednesday dismissed the State House of Assembly’s adoption of a report by its ad-hoc committee demanding to probe his governance of the state from May 2015 to May 2023.

El-Rufai described it as a “politically motivated hatchet job,” insisting he served with integrity.

But appearing on Channels on Wednesday evening, Zachariah said that N423 billion was withdrawn from the state account with nothing attached to it.

”The N423 billion were monies taken from the purse of the government without any activity attached to it,” he said.

“The Commissioner for Finance and Accountant General withdrew N30 billion. They withdrew N1.4 trillion from the state government account.”

Politics / El-Rufai Replies Kaduna Lawmakers Over Corruption Allegation by amoreobansu: 8:23pm On Jun 05
The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has denied any wrongdoing while in office and accused the state’s lawmakers of conducting a ‘jaundiced’ probe of his administration.

Mr El-Rufai, in a statement by his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, accused the ad-hoc committee that probed him of “merely going through the motions of an inquiry just to give some gloss to predetermined conclusions.”

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the Kaduna State House of Assembly on Wednesday adopted the report of its ad-hoc committee that indicted Mr El-Rufai and requested his prosecution.

The lawmakers accused the ex-Kaduna governor of mismanaging about N423 billion while in office.

Mr El-Rufai, in the statement by Mr Adekeye, however, denied the allegation.

We are aware of news that the Kaduna State House of Assembly has adopted the report of the ad-hoc committee it asked to probe the El-Rufai government. We have not been availed a copy of the report, to which we would respond robustly whenever we obtain it. We affirm the integrity of the El-Rufai government and dismiss the scandalous claims being aired as the report of the committee.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai is immensely proud of his record of governance and the legacy he left in Kaduna State. This record of consistently high performance in public and private office cannot be altered by any malicious effort to use the auspices of a state legislature for defamation and undeserved smears.

Many of the officials who served in the El-Rufai government appeared before the ad-hoc committee because of their confidence in the quality of their service and the rectitude which they served Kaduna State. They were under no illusion that they were participating in a fair process. It was obvious that the ad hoc committee was merely going through the motions of an inquiry just to give some gloss to predetermined conclusions.

It is sad to see such a shameful departure from any notion of decency and fairness by a state legislature. We dismiss with contempt the claims being peddled in connection with the report.

Malam El-Rufai wishes to assure discerning Nigerians that he has served Kaduna State with integrity and to the best of his capacity, assisted by a hardworking and patriotic team. He complied with all extant laws in all his activities while he was the governor. This jaundiced probe should be disregarded as the politically motivated hatchet job it is.

Politics / Wale Edun Admits FG Paying More For Subsidy Despite Increasing Fuel Prices by amoreobansu: 5:05pm On Jun 05
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun has admitted that the federal government spent more money secretly subsidising petrol for Nigerians in 2023 despite President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of scrapping the subsidies at his inauguration last year.

The removal of the fuel subsidy jerked prices from N190 per litre to N580 per litre, and often more, depending on the naira’s value in the foreign exchange market.

Mr Edun conceded the subsidy payment in a draft report of the Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP), which was submitted to Mr Tinubu on Tuesday.

He projected that the fuel subsidy would reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024, which contrasts sharply with the N3.6 trillion budgeted for it in 2023 and 2022’s N2 trillion.

“At current rates, expenditure on fuel subsidy is projected to reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. This compares unfavourably with N3.6 trillion in 2023 and N2.0 trillion in 2022,” stated the draft ASAP report.

The report came on the back of repeated denials by Mele Kyari, group CEO of Nigeria’s energy regulator, NNPC, that there were no provisions whatsoever to accommodate fuel subsidy payment in the 2023 budget.

“I told you there’s no subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import,” Mr Kyari said in August 2023 to squelch rumours that the government was partially funding subsidies.

“We sell to the market; we understand why the marketers are unable to import. We hope they do this quickly, and these are some interventions the government is making. There is no subsidy,” the NNPC boss said.

However, Nigerians’ effect of the subsidy payment remains unfelt, as they still pay between N600 and N680 per litre to buy fuel. This has caused a drastic decline in the revenues of small businesses and multinational companies.

Companies like Microsoft and UK pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline have already shut down their businesses in Nigeria due to the harsh economic environment.

Inflation, at 40 per cent, was at a never-before-seen peak, causing some of the president’s supporters to openly rebuke him and question the achievement of his policies since assuming office over a year ago.

On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress declared a nationwide strike over the removal of subsidies and consequently rising food prices, which were not met with an increase in the minimum wage.

The strike was relaxed for five days after the federal government lobbied the organised labour and assured them Mr Tinubu was committed to increasing the minimum wage to above N60,000.

Politics / Senator Abdul Ningi Returns Plenary After 77-Day Suspension (Video) by amoreobansu: 4:00pm On Jun 04
Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents the Bauchi North Senatorial District, resumed his duties at the plenary sessions after 77 days of suspension on Tuesday.

The Senate had granted him a pardon, lifting the suspension that had been in effect since March 12, 2024.

The motion for Ningi’s recall was moved last week by Deputy Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro, who expressed regret on Ningi’s behalf and accepted responsibility for his actions

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced Ningi’s unconditional recall following pleas from several lawmakers.

Ningi’s suspension was a result of a controversial interview in which he claimed there were discrepancies in the 2024 budget, stating that the National Assembly had approved N25 trillion, while the Presidency had implemented N28.7 trillion.
