Sokoto-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Bello Yabo has claimed that President Bola Tinubu admitted to clerics and traditional rulers that he used his personal funds to secure the presidency. In a recent video of one of his sermons, Yabo recounted Tinubu’s disclosure during a meeting at the villa last week..... He said, “Tinubu has really impressed me; he invited all the traditional rulers from the North, West, and East and told them bluntly that ‘I bought this seat I’m on with money,’” Yabo stated. He praised Tinubu for his candor, remarking, “Tinubu has never impressed me like now for coming out to tell the naked truth. Whoever pays the piper dictates the tune; isn’t Tinubu telling the truth?” Yabo criticized those who sold their votes during the 2023 presidential elections, highlighting the fleeting nature of the rewards they received. “You have eaten the spaghetti and macaroni you have been given to vote, and now it is finished, it’s all over, so what next?” he asked, referencing Tinubu’s substantial campaign spending from the primaries to the presidential election. Reflecting on the future, Yabo urged, “It’s all over now; let us pray and wait for the next election in 2027. If you like, collect his money again and vote for him, and I assure you, you’ll remain in pain, that’s all.” Tinubu’s remarks at the meeting last week emphasized his self-funding campaign, stating, “I have no cabal. I have no sponsors. The money I spent on the elections was my personal fortune. At some point, the odds were against me; banks were locked. But Allah, the Almighty God, said I will be the president. https://aznews.ng/breaking-islamic-cleric-recalls-tinubu-boasting-i-bought-this-presidential-seat-with-my-money/ |

KANO – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano, BUK chapter during the weekend rejected the appointment of Kano top flight politician, Dr Nasiru Gawuna into the Governing Council of the second generation tertiary Institution. Addressing newsmen in its secretariat, the Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj said that the process that led to the appointment of politicians into the Governing Council of the nation’s citadel of learning contravened the relevant laws that guided such appointment. Comrade Siraj explained that “I must admit that we are not happy over the decision of the federal government to appoint hard core politicians into the Governing Council. Siraj stressed that “the criteria for such appointments is explicitly clear, as it favoured the appointment of technocrats, academic to the Council”. He therefore called on the federal government to reinstate Senator Udo Udoma led Governing Council to complete their term in the interests of the rule of law Siraj stressed that “the scenario is just like sacking an executive governor of a state after just one in office, and you went ahead to assume that all is normal, no, this is rape on the rule of law.” Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, earlier had led (ASUU), Bayero University Kano branch, on a peaceful protest on Friday demanding the federal government to pay their entitlements and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement. Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, said the action was in compliance with the directive by the national body to all its branches to organize protests within their campuses on account of the federal government’s failure to pay their entitlements. https://independent.ng/ASUU-rejects-gawuna-others-on-governing-council-of-buk-favours-udomas-return/ |
Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has urged the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu to refrain from intervening in Kano State’s political matters. The warning comes amidst controversy over the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, following the enactment of the new Kano Emirate Council Law and the deposition of Aminu Bayero. In an interview with Arise Television on Monday, Galadima cautioned Tinubu, asserting that any interference in Kano politics could jeopardize his presidency. His words: “I want to tell the Federal Government, including my friend, President Bola Tinubu, that he should be mindful of Kano politics, it will destroy his presidency. “I know some very powerful politicians in Kano, including some rich men who came to meet the president, that they should remove Abba Yusuf and nothing will happen. “The man I know should be smarter than what he is by telling that nothing will happen and ask them that how did it happen that you didn’t win the election in the first place.” Galadima concluded by drawing a parallel to the Boko Haram insurgency, warning that Kano’s political issues could be equally challenging. “If Boko Haram can hold the Nigerian nation to ransom for the last 13 to 14 years, they should be careful with Kano. We have come of age in Kano and I am not threatening anyone. That is all I can say,” he added. https://politicsnigeria.com/itll-destroy-your-presidency-galadima-warns-tinubu-to-stay-away-from-kano-politics/ |

ABUJA, 7 June 2024 – Around 11 million children, or one in every three children under five years of age, in Nigeria are experiencing severe child food poverty, making them up to 50 per cent more likely to experience wasting, a life-threatening form of malnutrition, a new UNICEF report reveals today. For the first time, the Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood report analyses the impacts and causes of dietary deprivation among the world’s youngest and most vulnerable, i.e. children under five years of age, in nearly 100 countries, and across income groups. Globally, 181 million children under the age of five who consume, at most, two of eight defined food groups are considered in severe child food poverty and unable to sustain optimal growth and development in early childhood and beyond. Nigeria ranks among the 20 countries that account for almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of the 181 million children living in severe child food poverty. Globally, four out of five children experiencing child food poverty are fed only breastmilk/milk and/or a starchy staple, such as rice, maize, or wheat. Less than 10 per cent of these children are fed fruits and vegetables. And even fewer, less than 5 per cent, are fed nutrient-dense foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, or meat. The report warns that while countries are still recovering from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of growing inequities, conflicts, and the climate crisis have pushed food prices and the cost of living to record high levels. A recently published report by the Government and partners titled Cadre Harmonisé estimates that nearly 32 million people across 26 states of Nigeria are food insecure during this year’s lean season between June and August. Globally and in Nigeria, several factors are fueling the child food poverty crisis, including food systems that fail to provide children with nutritious, safe and accessible options, families’ inability to afford nutritious foods, and parents’ inability to adopt and sustain positive child feeding practices. Cheap, nutrient-poor and unhealthy ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages are aggressively marketed to parents and families and are the new normal for feeding children. These unhealthy foods and beverages are consumed by an alarming proportion of young children experiencing food poverty, displacing more nutritious and healthier foods from their daily diets. The report shows that in Nigeria, the number of children facing serious hunger is much higher in the poorest families (44%) compared to the richest families (17%). Despite such high numbers of children affected with severe child food poverty, Nigeria has demonstrated a steady decline in the proportion of children facing severe food poverty from 45% in 2012 to 32% in 2022. However, much more needs to be done to ensure that every child has access to and consumes a diverse diet. “Children grappling with severe child food poverty are more likely to face the life-threatening consequences of wasting, thereby impacting their survival and growth,” said UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Cristian Munduate. “We urgently need to work together to address child food poverty and make nutritious options more accessible and affordable, especially for vulnerable families.” To end child food poverty, UNICEF calls on governments, development and humanitarian organizations, donors, civil society and the food and beverage industry to urgently: To accelerate actions to prevent, detect and treat severe child food poverty and malnutrition, the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF) was launched in Nigeria last year with the support of several partners. The CNF is a UNICEF-led multi-partner financing mechanism that incentivizes domestic investments to end child malnutrition. So far, four states have released funds to the CNF, while another nine states have pledged their commitments. UNICEF urges governments, donors and financial partners to support the CNF and prioritise practices to end severe child food poverty and malnutrition. Categories of child food poverty If children are fed: 0–2 food groups/day, they are living in severe child food poverty, 3–4 food groups/day, they are living in moderate child food poverty, 5 or more food groups/day, they are not living in child food poverty. [NH1]@Anike Alli-Hakeem do we mean four out of five children experiencing severe food poverty are….. (if yes, I would recommend we edit to make it explicit), thanks. https://www.unicef.org/nigeria/press-releases/1-3-children-nigeria-experiences-severe-child-food-poverty-due-conflict-climate#:~:text=ABUJA%2C%207%20June%202024%20%E2%80%93%20Around,new%20UNICEF%20report%20reveals%20today. |

Nigerian governors with billions in unaccounted security votes reject N60,000 minimum wage “The NGF cautions parties in this important discussion to look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it.” Nigerian state governors, who are recipients of billions of naira in unaccounted monthly security votes remittance from the federal government, have rejected the N60,000 minimum wage proposal, saying the amount is “unattainable” for them, thus “cannot fly”. “The Nigeria Governors’ Forum is in agreement that a new minimum wage is due. The Forum also sympathises with labour unions in their push for higher wages,” a statement issued on Friday by the director of media and public affairs for NGF Halimah Ahmed said. “All things considered, the NGF holds that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal is not sustainable and can not fly. It will simply mean that many states will spend all their FAAC allocations on just paying salaries with nothing left for development purposes. In fact, a few states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month. We do not think this will be in the collective interest of the country, including workers.” The FG and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have been at loggerheads over the implementation of a new minimum wage for workers that will reflect the current economic realities. Organised labour later embarked on a short strike after both parties failed to reach an agreement. However, the NLC, on Tuesday, called off the strike for five days after the Nigerian government and labour unions signed an agreement which included the FG’s commitment to a minimum wage of more than N60,000 within the time frame. With less than 24 hours before the agreement elapses and as FG prepares for an increased proposal to NLC, Nigerian governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), have rejected the initial N60,000 proposal, tagging the amount too high for them to pay. “However, the Forum urges all parties to consider the fact that the minimum wage negotiations also involve consequential adjustments across all cadres, including pensioners. The NGF cautions parties in this important discussion to look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it; any agreement to be signed should be sustainable and realistic.” https://gazettengr.com/nigerian-governors-with-billions-in-unaccounted-security-votes-reject-n60000-minimum-wage/ |
FCT, Abuja - State governors under the umbrella of the Nigeria Governors' Forum have reportedly ruled out the option of paying N100,000 and above as the new minimum wage. At their meeting on Thursday, June 6, the governors were said to have considered a minimum wage between N60,000 and N70,000. Minimum wage: How much will governors pay? According to The Nation, state leaders reviewed the country's economic situation and concluded that anything above N70,000 would not be sustainable and affordable. The governors then ruled out the option of paying N100,000 as many people have suggested. Sources familiar with the issue said the governors could not reach a conclusion on what should be paid between the N60,000 earlier proposed by the federal government and the N70,000 currently being paid by the Edo state government. Imo governor leads committee on minimum wage. It was gathered that at the meeting, the governors set up a committee, headed by Hope Uzodinma of Imo state, to review the minimum wage. Uzodinma is also currently the chairman of the progressives governors forum, which is a platform for governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governors' stance echoed the previous statement from the NGF and the governor of Kwara state, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, that they would only agree to an 'affordable and sustainable' minimum wage. The meeting of the governors comes after a recent industrial action by organised labour, which started on Monday, June 3 but was suspended temporarily afterwards to allow for further deliberation. https://www.legit.ng/nigeria/1596197-minimum-wage-governors-rule-n100k-option-unveils-benchmark/ |
The Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for his generous donation of 70 trucks of fertilizer in support of agricultural activities in Kano. This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday. During the inauguration of rural access roads in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, the governor announced that the President had graciously provided 70 trucks of fertilizer to be promptly distributed to farmers in the state. The governor expressed his delight and extended his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the government and the people of Kano for the President’s gesture. “Kano remains steadfast in its commitment to agricultural transformation by ensuring the accessibility and affordability of high-quality agricultural inputs to enhance crop production within the state” he said. Previously, the governor had directed the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) to begin extensive production of fertilizer in preparation for the upcoming rainy season, with the objective of aiding smallholder farmers across the state. As one of Nigeria’s leading crop-producing states, Kano is blessed with vast arable land suitable for cultivating staple crops such as rice, maize, soybeans, groundnuts, sesame, hibiscus, and sorghum. https://guardian.ng/news/yusuf-thanks-tinubu-for-donating-70-fertilizer-trucks-to-kano-farmers/ |

El-Rufai's government withdrew N1.4trn from state account - Kaduna Assembly The chairman of the Kaduna State House Committee on Information, Henry Marah Zachariah, has come up with some revelations on the financial activities of the El-Rufai administration. The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday set up a 13-man committee to probe financial dealings, loans, grants and other project implementations from 2015–2023 under former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s tenure. Chairman House Committee on Public Accounts, who is also the Deputy Minority Whip, Honourable Mugu Yusuf, who moved the motion, said the public needed to know what happened during that period, adding that the House also mandated the committee to invite notable personalities that served during the period, including contractors, to explain how the loans and grants received during the period under review were spent. Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai had on Wednesday dismissed the State House of Assembly’s adoption of a report by its ad-hoc committee demanding to probe his governance of the state from May 2015 to May 2023. El-Rufai described it as a “politically motivated hatchet job,” insisting he served with integrity. But appearing on Channels on Wednesday evening, Zachariah said that N423 billion was withdrawn from the state account with nothing attached to it. ”The N423 billion were monies taken from the purse of the government without any activity attached to it,” he said. “The Commissioner for Finance and Accountant General withdrew N30 billion. They withdrew N1.4 trillion from the state government account.” https://dailypost.ng/2024/06/05/el-rufais-government-withdrew-n1-4trn-from-state-account-kaduna-assembly/ |

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun has admitted that the federal government spent more money secretly subsidising petrol for Nigerians in 2023 despite President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of scrapping the subsidies at his inauguration last year. The removal of the fuel subsidy jerked prices from N190 per litre to N580 per litre, and often more, depending on the naira’s value in the foreign exchange market. Mr Edun conceded the subsidy payment in a draft report of the Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan (ASAP), which was submitted to Mr Tinubu on Tuesday. He projected that the fuel subsidy would reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024, which contrasts sharply with the N3.6 trillion budgeted for it in 2023 and 2022’s N2 trillion. “At current rates, expenditure on fuel subsidy is projected to reach N5.4 trillion by the end of 2024. This compares unfavourably with N3.6 trillion in 2023 and N2.0 trillion in 2022,” stated the draft ASAP report. The report came on the back of repeated denials by Mele Kyari, group CEO of Nigeria’s energy regulator, NNPC, that there were no provisions whatsoever to accommodate fuel subsidy payment in the 2023 budget. “I told you there’s no subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import,” Mr Kyari said in August 2023 to squelch rumours that the government was partially funding subsidies. “We sell to the market; we understand why the marketers are unable to import. We hope they do this quickly, and these are some interventions the government is making. There is no subsidy,” the NNPC boss said. However, Nigerians’ effect of the subsidy payment remains unfelt, as they still pay between N600 and N680 per litre to buy fuel. This has caused a drastic decline in the revenues of small businesses and multinational companies. Companies like Microsoft and UK pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline have already shut down their businesses in Nigeria due to the harsh economic environment. Inflation, at 40 per cent, was at a never-before-seen peak, causing some of the president’s supporters to openly rebuke him and question the achievement of his policies since assuming office over a year ago. On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress declared a nationwide strike over the removal of subsidies and consequently rising food prices, which were not met with an increase in the minimum wage. The strike was relaxed for five days after the federal government lobbied the organised labour and assured them Mr Tinubu was committed to increasing the minimum wage to above N60,000. https://gazettengr.com/wale-edun-admits-fg-paying-more-for-subsidy-despite-increasing-fuel-prices/ |
