Mitsurugi:Fury as Southerners "take over" Northerners' slots in N-Power shortlist — Daily Nigerian November 23, 2016 tiamin rice By Adnan Tudunwada Controversy has trailed the release of the list of the beneficiaries of federal government’s job creation program, N-Power, after names perceived to be those of Southerners appeared on the shortlist of some Northern states. The N-power is a federal government’s programme designed to drastically reduce number of unemployed graduates and provide qualified manpower in basic education, agriculture and healthcare sectors. But some activists in the North faulted the shortlist of the 200,000 successful candidates, believing that it was doctored to favour Southerners. ad The activists argued that in Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, among other states of the North, some “strange names” are replete in the list. In Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, some residents cried that there was a higher number of non-Indigenes than indigenes of the local government. A youth activist, Nasir Suleiman, said natives of Abadam, a Kanuri dominated area with Fulani and Buduma people minorities, were out-numbered by non Indigenes. “Names like Josephine Adebayo, Olywaseyi Oye, Ibe Ije, Adebisi Lawrence, Jude Okorie and Ilemiri Godson are examples of names that dominated the list of Abadam Local Government in the N-power programme,” he added. JaizBank A native of Abadam, Malam Abuy Akhuwa argued that “nowhere in Abadam one can see persons named Olywaseyi Oye, Ibe Ije, Adebisi Lawrence, Jude Okorie, etc. But these are the names we saw representing us. No! It is impossible.” Another youth activist, Kabiru Haruna said in Bagwai Local Government of Kano State, previous reports indicated low number of application from the natives of the local government, but suddenly “some strange names” sprouted from the local government. He added that in Kano Municipal, with its population of over 1 million, only 373 applied but more than 30% of those selected are said to be non-Indigenes. “It will be very hard for Kano Municipal Local Government to have an Igbo or Yoruba Indigine. You can’t have a similar treatment in Imo or Bayelsa. In the whole Imo, there was not more than two Hausa people that were selected but in Jigawa alone more than a 100 non-indigenes have occupied the space of indigenes,” he added. A Kano based lawyer, Barrister Abubakar Mujahid, said nobody will raise alarm if there was equilibrium in the distribution of the names of Northerners in the Southern states. “But one could not find a similar inclusion of Northerners in any Southern States,” he lamented. Responding to Daily Nigerian enquiry on the matter, Laolu Akande, the spokesman of the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said there was no cause for alarm as applicants were selected based on their place of residence not state of origin. https://dailynigerian.com/fury-as-southerners-take-over-northerners-slots-in-n-power-shortlist/ |

“A land without a people, and a people without a land” is how the relationship between Palestine and the Jewish people was described by Christian writers in the 1800s. And the 20th-century history of the Middle East has largely been written through these eyes. But this film from Al Jazeera Arabic looks at Palestine from a different angle. It hears from historians and witness accounts, and features archive documents that show Palestine as a thriving province of Greater Syria and the Ottoman Empire at the dawn of the 20th century. The evidence suggests that its cities had a developing trade and commercial sector, growing infrastructure, and embryonic culture that would enable it to meet the challenges of the decades ahead. However, the political ramifications of the Balfour Declaration, San Remo Conference and British Mandate set in motion a series of events that profoundly affected this vibrant, fledgeling society and led to the events of 1948 and beyond. This film is the other side of the Palestinian story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUCeQt8zg5o |
Israel is one of the most racist countries in the world. While Israel works hard to play the victim, it’s actually a racist, Jewish supremacist state that’s been trying to ethnically cleanse Palestine for decades. Afghanistan’s currency has emerged as the world’s best performing unit in the September quarter, rallying 9 per cent during the three-month period and 14 per cent so far this year amid foreign aid flows and the US releasing funds to the war-torn country. At Tuesday’s exchange rate, an Afghan Afghani is worth Rs 1.06 and 78.54 against the US dollar. The mostly agrarian economy of the now Taliban-ruled Afghanistan had tanked almost 30 per cent, and its currency had dropped to 124.2 against the US dollar on August 16, 2021. On August 14, the local currency quoted 80.96 against the greenback, according to a currency analyst at HDFC Securities told PTI. The analyst did not want to be named as the brokerage does not track the Afghan currency since the current Afghanistan regime has stopped sharing data. According to a recent World Bank report, the economy steeped in unemployment and abject poverty of the vast majority is now facing deflation. On the back of foreign exchange inflows, the Afghani has rallied from 85 to the US dollar in early August to 73.38 on August 31 — its best-ever show since the Taliban takeover. Since then in September, the unit lost the sheen by 6.5 per cent and closed at 78.54 on Tuesday, according to HDFC Securities. Despite the fall, the Afghani was the best performing currency across the world in the September quarter, gaining 9 per cent in the quarter and 14 per cent year-to-date, according to Bloomberg data quoted in a section of the media. There is no liquidity in the Afghani market, and the rally should be a one-off event and does not look like it will last, the analyst said. According to the analyst, the major reason for the massive rally in the unit, which mostly happened in August, was due to the resumption of the UN and other international agencies’ aid to the war-ravaged country. Also, the US releasing USD 280 million out of the USD 8 billion of frozen funds since the Taliban takeover has helped in the currency appreciation, the analyst added. Recently, the US Treasury Department said it would transfer USD 3.5 billion more of the frozen funds to an Afghan fund established in Switzerland to ensure economic stability in Afghanistan. As per reports, the 9 per cent rally of the Afghani has outpaced the Colombian peso’s 3 per cent gain. Another unit that gained is the Sri Lankan rupee. https://www.dnaindia.com/business/report-afghanistan-s-currency-emerges-as-best-performing-globally-afghan-afghani-taliban-world-bank-3062164 |
Referees once again took the headlines on the opening matchday of the 2023/24 Premier League season following an incorrect VAR decision in Manchester United's fixture against Wolves. Gary O'Neil's side were denied a late penalty after a foul from Andre Onana on Sasa Kalajdzic. Despite a long VAR check, Wolves were not given the spot-kick in injury time and lost the match 1-0. Fans watching the game were in disbelief when the call was made, and similar incidents have happened since, including against United. Bruno Fernandes said he would wait for an apology — one that never arrived — after Cristian Romero was not punished for handball in the Red Devils' 2-0 loss to Tottenham, and plenty of onlookers debated the penalty won by Marcus Rashford in United's subsequent comeback win at home to Nottingham Forest. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for referees in English football, has apologised on multiple occasions for mistakes made during matches. Here is an updated list of the incidents. Every PGMOL apology for referee mistakes Here are all the apologies carried out by the PGMOL for wrong decisions later accepted to have been wrong. Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool: September 30, 2023 Liverpool had their hearts broken as Joel Matip's stoppage-time own-goal gave Tottenham a 2-1 victory. The Reds, down to nine men after a red card to Curtis Jones and two bookings for Diogo Jota, were looking to hang on at the death, and nearly did so until the cruel finish. However, the game could have turned out completely different had the VAR booth not committed a "serious human error" earlier in the match. Soon after Jones was sent off in the first half, Luis Diaz scored to put Liverpool 1-0 up despite their disadvantage, but the flag went up for offside. Replay seemed to show that Diaz was onside, but VAR Darren England ended his check without even drawing lines, and the decision stood. The PGMOL issued a statement after the match stating the goal should have stood. Manchester United 1-0 Wolves: August 14, 2023 After Onana clattered into Kalajdzic in the box, O'Neil thought a penalty would certainly be awarded. Instead, the Wolves manager received a yellow card on the sidelines for his protests. PGMOL's Jonathan Moss did apologise for the mistake after the match, which O'Neil said he appreciated. Tottenham 2-1 Brighton: April 8, 2023 Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb had to give to Brighton an apology after they were denied a penalty in their away trip to Tottenham. It was one of many decisions the Seagulls were not happy about. Arsenal 1-1 Brentford: February 11, 2023 Arsenal were denied two points in their race for the title after VAR's Lee Mason did not use the right player when checking for an offside in Brentford's goal. Mikel Arteta was not happy after the game. He said: "That wasn't a human error. That was a big, big, big not conceiving and understanding your job." Crystal Palace 1-1 Brighton: February 11, 2023 Incredibly, the referees made another wrong offside decision on the same day. John Brooks was taken off VAR duty for two games after he drew the offside line in the wrong place, denying Brighton's Pervis Estupinan a goal. Aston Villa 3-1 Manchester United: November 6, 2022 Lucas Digne's free-kick was one of the highlights in Aston Villa's victory over Man United, but a post-match review showed he received additional help following a mistake from the referee. The Red Devils' wall was set more than 10 yards behind the ball, allowing Digne more room to find the back of the net. Nottingham Forest 2-2 Brentford: November 5, 2022 Brentford were awarded a penalty after a collision between Dean Henderson and Yoane Wissa. Replays showed that Wissa initiated the contact, but Brentford were still given the spot-kick. This forced Webb to apologise to Forest after the match. Fulham 3-0 Aston Villa: October 20, 2022 Douglas Luiz was wrongly sent off for Aston Villa just after the hour mark. He was thought to have instigated a bust-up, when the real perpetrator was in fact Aleksandar Mitrovic. Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal: September 4, 2022 Arsenal's first defeat of the season came at Old Trafford, but a refereeing decision impacted the match early on. Gabriel Martinelli was denied a goal after a VAR check decided Martin Odegaard had fouled Christian Eriksen. PGMOL later revealed that the goal should have stood. Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace: September 3, 2022 Crystal Palace were let off the hook when Tyrick Mitchell's own goal was ruled out after Joe Willock was thought to have impeded Vicente Guaita between the sticks. It turned out to be the wrong decision, despite a lengthy check in the VAR hub. Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: September 3, 2022 Maxwell Cornet thought he scored late on against Chelsea to make it 2-2, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul on Edouard Mendy by Jarrod Bowen in the build-up. Webb apologised to David Moyes after the incident. Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa: August 20, 2022 Webb's first apology in his new role came during Villa's defeat at Selhurst Park. Andy Madley awarded Palace a penalty following a check on the VAR monitor. The decision, which went against Digne, was the wrong call. Everton 0-1 Manchester City: February 26, 2022 Man City were given a helping hand in their title race against Liverpool after Everton were denied a penalty in the second half. Rodri misjudged the flight of the ball and it ricocheted off his arm. VAR official Chris Kavanagh stuck with the on-field decision, which later forced referees chief Mike Riley to apologise to Everton. https://www.sportingnews.com/us/soccer/news/var-apology-list-premier-league-pgmol-referee-mistakes/hhw8byssj025djuce3gbd2pp |

To cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday presented a cheque of two billion naira (N2b) to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, in Borno State for disbursement of interest-free loans to eligible workers with repayment period of 24 months. The presentation took place after a meeting between the governor and officials of the NLC led by the labour chairman in Borno State, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa. The meeting took place at the council chambers of the Government House in Maiduguri. Zulum asked the NLC to complete talks with state’s ministry of finance to determine category of workers to be entitled to the loans as well as the loan recovery through monthly deductions of not more than one third of salaries. The governor also announced 100% increase in monthly releases for payment of gratuities backlog. The payment was increased from N100 million monthly which equals N1.2 billion annually to N200 million monthly which will amount to N2.4 billion. The gratuities are lump sums paid workers who retired from service, even as they become entitled to monthly pensions. For many years, retired workers in Borno State are owed gratuities for which Governor Zulum has released about N20 billion to drastically reduce the backlog even though more workers retire every year, making more of them to be owed gratuities. Although many are owed gratuities, Governor Zulum has since introduced a policy of automatic migration of retired workers from salaries to pensions. Before the policy, it took retired workers months to complete documentation before getting monthly pension while they wait for gratuities which takes longer waiting time. … Zulum allocates 30 buses to ease workers transport Also as part of outcome from his meeting with the NLC, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday in Maiduguri announced the allocation of 30 buses to be dedicated to conveying workers in the metropolis at subsidized fares. The buses are to be managed by the Borno Express Transport Corporation but to be deployed at pick up points along major routes to move workers to the Musa Usman secretariat in the morning and return them by evening from the secretariat to where they were picked up in the morning. … Directs payment of promotional benefits Still as part of the outcome of his meeting with labour, Governor Zulum has directed the state’s ministry of finance to clear backlogs of promotional benefits owed workers whose names were omitted during earlier payments. The workers were those still being owed 2016, 2017 and 2018 promotional benefits after their names where omitted during payments approved by Governor Zulum in 2019. Zulum directed that workers owed 2019 and 2020 promotional benefits should all be paid while those owed from 2021 to date are to be paid based on outcome of a recent promotional exam which they participated in. … NLC Chairman speaks Before Governor Zulum’s pronouncement, chairman of the NLC in Borno State, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa tabled some demands, top of which the governor approved. The chairman said the NLC demanded loans for workers who may want to do agricultural and other businesses or acquire some assets. He also said the NLC demanded allocation of buses and clearing of promotional benefits. Inuwa also said labour demanded increase in the monthly allocation for payment of pensions. The NLC chairman later thanked Governor Zulum for meeting top of their demands, hoping that labour will continue engaging the government for more demands to be addressed for the welfare of workers at the state and local government levels. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/09/subsidy-zulum-gives-nlc-n2bn-for-workers-loan-raises-gratuity-n2-4-bn-annually/ |

How Major Nzeogwu killed Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sokoto Gripping details of how Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the Northern region was killed by mutinous soldiers led by the late Major Kaduna Chukwuma Nzeogwu on January 15, 1966 have been revealed in a series of dispatches by British diplomats and intelligence officers during the period. Titled:British Secret Files on Nigeria’s First Bloody Coup, Path to Biafra, the details are contained in the current issue of TheNEWS magazine which is out today on the newsstand. It was written by Damola Awoyokun, an engineer and historian. According to intelligence dispatches on the death of Ahmadu Bello, he was not in the main house but upstairs in the rear annex with his senior wife Habsatu; his second wife Goggon Kano, third wife Jabbo Birnin Kebbi and Sallama, a house retainer when Nzeogwu and his soldiers started breaking down doors asking for Sardauna. ”They (Sardauna and his wives) listened and rattled prayer beads in fear for an hour as Nzeogwu and his motivated mutineers booted down doors, pumped bullets into guards mounting resistance and shouted to others, “Ina Sardauna? Take us to the Sardauna.” It was dark, Sardauna and his wives went downstairs and into the courtyard connecting the annex and the main house. They were trying to escape. ”On finding them, Nzeogwu shot the Sardauna and his senior wife who was trying to protect him. He then blew a whistle which was the agreed signal for all soldiers to converge at the rallying point at the front gate for the final onslaught on their symbol of national decay. ”The rocket-launching party then began shelling the house. Boom! Boom! The ground shuddered like the cannon fire which the great Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky laced into his 1812 overture. Nzeogwu was a lover of jazz and classical music. Their beauty heightened his sensitivity to the decay which Nigeria was. He even mentored Captain Theophilus Danjuma to become a classical connoisseur. ”With the huge flame before him overpowering the harmattan and the night with abundance of light and heat, Nzeogwu was satisfied his own unit’s assignment was a success. He felt like a single note from an oboe, hanging high up there unwavering, avid for glory, above pulses from bassoons and basset horns till a drag from a clarinet took over and sweetened the note into a phrase of such delight, such unfulfilled longing making the coup’s failure unlikely with every passing bar. ”Nzeogwu then left for the brigade headquarters to await news from other units confident as ever like that high oboe note from Mozart’s Serenade for the Winds in B Flat that the news would be good news. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/06/12/how-major-nzeogwu-killed-ahmadu-bello-sardauna-of-sokoto/ |
