Politics‘Grow Your Own Food’ – Remi Tinubu Tells Nigerians Amid Hardship by amoreobansu(op): 5:32pm On Mar 20, 2024
The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has advised Nigerians to grow their food amid the nationwide food inflation and economic downturn.

According to Mrs Tinubu, the focus on agriculture is the way forward for the country.

In a statement issued by her special assistant on media, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady said this at the State house while receiving the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed.

The First Lady noted that the various interventions of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) especially in the areas of Agriculture, Empowerment, Education, Health and Social Welfare are to complement the efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The President has made the right decisions. These decisions will help us build a Nigeria that is more respected. We should be more accountable as a people as regards our resources,” she said.

“We have to inspire them [Youths] to think Nigeria first before any State.

“Youth between 15 years to 25 years will design the fabric depicting Nigeria and not just their State or tribe. The prize money is huge.”

In her remarks during her visit, Mohammed explained that the UN is looking forward to the country committing more funds to Youth, Women and Girls.

She said: “We need your voice for what the UN is doing with women empowerment, girls, poverty alleviation, education and the rest.”

Nairaland GeneralYoung People Becoming Less Happy Than Older Generations, Research Shows by amoreobansu(op): 5:07am On Mar 20, 2024

America’s top doctor says governments’ failure to better regulate social media is ‘insane’

Young people are becoming less happy than older generations as they suffer “the equivalent of a midlife crisis”, global research has revealed as America’s top doctor warned that “young people are really struggling”.

Dr Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, said allowing children to use social media was like giving them medicine that is not proven to be safe. He said the failure of governments to better regulate social media in recent years was “insane”.

Murthy spoke to the Guardian as new data revealed that young people across North America were now less happy than their elders, with the same “historic” shift expected to follow in western Europe.

Declining wellbeing among under-30s has driven the US out of the top 20 list of happiest nations, the 2024 World Happiness Report revealed.

After 12 years in which people aged 15 to 24 were measured as being happier than older generations in the US, the trend appears to have flipped in 2017. The gap has also narrowed in western Europe and the same change could happen in the coming year or two, it is thought.

Murthy described the report findings as a “red flag that young people are really struggling in the US and now increasingly around the world”. He said he was still waiting to see data that proved social media platforms were safe for children and adolescents, and called for international action to improve real-life social connections for young people.

The World Happiness Report, an annual barometer of wellbeing in 140 nations coordinated by Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre, Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, showed “disconcerting drops [in youth happiness] especially in North America and western Europe,” said Prof Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, director of the Wellbeing Research Centre and editor of the study.

“To think that in some parts of the world children are already experiencing the equivalent of a midlife crisis, demands immediate policy action,” he said.

The falling wellbeing scores for North America (in a grouping that includes Australia and New Zealand) “contradicts a well-established notion … that kids start out happier before they slide down the U-curve towards a mid-life crisis before [wellbeing] picks up again,” De Neve added.

British people under 30 ranked 32nd in the rankings, behind nations such as Moldova, Kosovo and even El Salvador, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates.

By contrast British over-60s made it into the top 20 of the world’s happiest older generations. Earlier this month a majority of British teenagers told pollsters they expect their lives to be worse than the previous generation.

The US fell eight places in the overall happiness rankings to 23rd, but when only the under-30s were asked the world’s richest nation ranked 62nd – behind Guatemala, Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria. If the views of only people aged 60 and over were accounted for, the US was the 10th happiest nation.

“For the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, happiness has decreased in all age groups, but especially for the young, so much so that the young are now, in 2021-23, the least happy age group,” the report found. In 2010 the young were happier than those in midlife.

The report does not reveal the causes of the changes, but they come amid increasing concern at the impact of rising social media use, income inequalities, the housing crisis, and fears about war and climate change on the happiness of children and young people.

Murthy said US adolescents were spending nearly five hours a day on social media on average and a third were staying up until midnight on week nights on their devices. He called for legislation “now” to reduce harms to young people from social media including limiting or eliminating features such as like buttons and infinite scrolling.

The World Happiness Report tracks subjective wellbeing using respondents’ own assessments of their lives and their positive and negative emotions. Once again Finland, Denmark and Iceland were the top three happiest countries.

Jukka Siukosaari, Finland’s ambassador to London, said his nation had managed to create an “infrastructure of happiness” including a “safe and secure environment”, affordable opportunities for people to express themselves culturally, and relatively equal incomes. “It all begins with high levels of trust between citizens and our institutions,” he said.

Costa Rica and Kuwait were new entrants to the top 20. Germany dropped from 16th to 24th. Afghanistan and Lebanon stayed as the two least happy nations. Countries that enjoyed increasing happiness included many African nations, Cambodia, Russia and China. Serbia recorded the biggest increase in happiness.

Childhood wellbeing and emotional health may be the best predictor for adult life satisfaction, the report found. Earlier research has concluded adolescents and young adults who report higher life satisfaction earn significantly higher levels of income later in life, even accounting for differences in education, intelligence, physical health and self-esteem.

Lord Layard, a Labour peer in the UK parliament and co-editor of the report, said child wellbeing should be a big issue at the general election expected to be held this year. “We need pledges to upgrade mental health support teams and to make them universal across the country. And life skills should be taught in every school,” he said.

PoliticsAs Obaseki Finally Goes For Shaibu’s Jugular by amoreobansu(op): 6:58pm On Mar 18, 2024
Those who say politics is a dirty game and a game where dogs-eat-dogs sure know what they are talking about. It is a game where there are no permanent enemies but permanent interests, Politics is a game where betrayal is taken as a part of the game. Politics is a game for the fittest, strongest and meanest.

In Edo State, what used to be a match made in heaven for Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Phillip Shaibu, has since not just turned sour, but as things appear now, only the total emasculation of Shaibu will be good enough and acceptable to Governor Obaseki.

And given his antecedent, Obaseki will not back down until Shaibu is completely ruined, politically and economically.

Shaibu’s sin is that he dared to contest for the office of the governor of the state. Obaseki has his preferred candidate and Shaibu’s position is that the contest be left open for all to try their popularity and acceptance by the Edo people.

Knowing the sheer size of the ego of our sitting governors, Shaibu’s temerity to go against the desire of Obaseki is a sin that cannot be forgiven, Of course, for daring to go the whole hog and fight for the ticket of the PDP, Shaibu should be prepared for the worst.

Asue Ighodalo, a former banker, and preferred choice of Obaseki recently won the PDP governorship ticket in Edo while Mr Shaibu, through a parallel primary election in which he was a lone candidate, claimed he was the rightful candidate of the party.

After denying him access to his office and relocating the office of the deputy governor, Obaseki also denied him his rights and privileges as deputy governor, in spite of the fact that they both jointly share the ticket. Having frustrated, harassed and intimidated him, what is left now for Obaseki is to ensure that every memory of Shaibu is erased from the state government record and to deny him whatever is due him after eight years as his deputy through impeachment.

And like all state assemblies, the Edo State Assembly is poised to carry out the biddings of Obaseki.

Shaibu, had in February alleged of a fresh plot to impeach him.

Shaibu, who had been declared winner of a factional governorship primary election that was reportedly held at his residence in Benin City, the state capital, said he would not be deterred as contesting the Edo governorship election is his constitutional right

Speaking in Abuja Shaibu said his team revealed the alleged plot to impeach him over his ambition.

“And I said, well, if fighting for my rights and all of us collectively fighting for our rights, which is in the constitution, can trigger impeachment, so be it because fighting for my rights and saying I must contest the election are my constitutional rights and cannot be taken by anybody. So, if constitutional right is why they will now trigger impeachment, the courts are there, they will interpret it.”

Recall that on July 28, Shaibu approached a federal high court in Abuja with a suit to prevent an alleged impeachment plot against him. Shaibu asked the court to restrain Obaseki, the speaker of the state assembly, and the chief judge, from “initiating impeachment proceedings or sanctioning any impeachment” against him.

On August 4, the court restrained Obaseki, the speaker, and other parties in the suit from initiating impeachment moves against Shaibu.

Reacting to the suit, Obaseki alleged that Shaibu wanted to kick him out of office ‘because of his desperation to succeed him’.

He also said there was no plan to impeach Shaibu.

On September 5, Shaibu withdrew the suit against Obaseki.

However, penultimate Wednesday, March 6 precisely, the Edo House of Assembly, commenced impeachment proceedings against Shaibu.

The Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian (PDP Ovia North-East 1), who announced the impeachment notice, said a petition dated 5 March against Mr. Shaibu, was signed by 21 of the 24 members of the legislature.

He added that the petition was based on perjury and the disclosure of government secrets.

Mr Aiguobarueghian noted that the number of members who signed the petition was higher than two-thirds which is required by the constitution.

Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku (PDP-Owan-West), who acknowledged receipt of the petition, directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice on the deputy governor.

Mr Agbebaku also gave the deputy governor seven days to respond to the notice of impeachment.

Meanwhile, Shaibu has denied that an impeachment notice was served on him.

However, the Assembly has directed that the impeachment notice be published in national dailies (by substitution) as it has become impossible to serve the deputy governor the letter in person.

It is rather unfortunate that our brand of democracy has remained a poor replica of how democracy is practised in the US from where we copied it from.

The very principle and letter of the separation of power is to allow for checks and balances and also ensure that all arms of government are put in check. Unfortunately, in our own experience, all other other arms of government are completely under the control of the executive. The worst culprits are the governors who are so powerful that they literally have the powers to decide who lives and who dies.

Of course, the Edo State Assembly is only acting on a script written and directed by Governor Obaseki, and woe betide them if they chose to, as much ask question, let alone, advise the governor against this bloated ego trip of his.

The perjury and the disclosure of government secrets allegations upon which the assembly is pursuing this shenanigan cannot hold water.

How has it become a crime to seek an office? Why has our brand of democracy allowed the governors so much power that they can get away with murder?

Obaseki must be enjoying the fact that everybody seems to be begging him not to carry out his plot against his deputy whose only offence is that he has chosen to decide his own destiny.

Knowing Obaseki for who he is, that pliable House would successfully carry out his biddings and impeach Shaibu, but he must be told that if there is any betrayal of trust between both of them, it is Obaseki who has betrayed Shaibu, after walking through thick and thin with him in his moments of trials, the least he could do is to at least allow him serve out his tenure as deputy governor. Obaseki is the one that has acted true to type by exhibiting his penchant for betraying those who had given him a shoulder to lean on during his moments of tribulation.

PoliticsAPC Begins E-registration Of Members by amoreobansu(op): 7:20pm On Mar 16, 2024
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced the process of registering its over 40 million members electronically to consolidate its membership strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, said this when he received a delegation of elected Deputy National Officers and National Executive Committee members of the party at the secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday.

The development is coming two years after Mai Mala Buni-led National Caretaker Committee conducted a similar nationwide membership registration exercise, which brought the current number to over 40 million.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Ganduje said that the essence of the electronic registration innovation is to capture the current membership strength of the party.

The APC national chairman also decried the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, stressing the number of votes garnered by the party was a far cry from the actual strength of its registered members.

He said, “If you will recall, we had several 41 million members. But during the presidential election, we had only eight million. What happened to the rest? This is why we need to be digital and ensure that we are working with the correct data.

“Another step that we have taken is that we are reviewing our registration electronically now. The work has already started. You should be ready that all our members will be electronically registered so that we have an exact number physically.”

Continuing, the former Kano governor also revealed that the APC has concluded plans to establish a National Institute of Democratic Studies to help Nigerians shape their pattern of behaviour in alignment with democracy and political ideology.

PoliticsTinubu Encouraged Buhari To Print N22.7trn In 2020 - Atiku's Aide Blasts Finance by amoreobansu(op): 12:12pm On Mar 07, 2024
The spokesman of Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Paul Ibe, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu once encouraged former President Muhammadu Buhari to print naira in 2020.

Ibe made the disclosure while criticizing the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, over his comment on the printing of N22.7 trillion under Buhari’s administration.

Edun had said the printing of N22.7 trillion by the Central Bank of Nigeria in the name of a Ways and Means loan under Buhari’s government and ex-CBN governor Godwin Emefiele was responsible for the current rising inflation and economic hardship in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interface with the Senate Committee on Finance, the minister said the Ways and Means of loans of N22.7 trillion under the past administration was done aimlessly.

He further stated that the alleged reckless spending of the overdraft collected from the CBN under Emefiele largely accounted for the country’s food and security crises.

He vowed that Tinubu’s government would audit the CBN printing in the last eight years.

Reacting, Ibe faulted the minister’s remark stressing that Tinubu encouraged Buhari to toll such an irresponsible path in 2020.

Posting on Facebook, Ibe wrote: “Why is Wale Edun, who is more like oku eko (frozen fish) in this administration, bleating like a goat over the issue of Buhari’s printing of Naira? It was Bola Tinubu, as National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, who in 2020, encouraged Buhari on this irresponsible path of printing currency not matched with productivity.”

Foreign AffairsCustoms Give Condition For Reopening Of Nigeria’s Border With Niger Republic by amoreobansu(op): 2:17pm On Mar 06, 2024
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has provided explanations for its decision not to reopen the border between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

Recall that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had after its meeting on February 25 announced that it agreed to lift economic sanctions imposed on Niger Republic after the military take over power in the country.

But Customs Comptroller in charge of Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, Kamal Muhammad, said it is waiting for the last order to reopen Nigeria’s border with Niger.

“The lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on Niger Republic and subsequent restoration of power supply to the neighbouring country are the reasons of my visit to ensure that all is set towards the re-opening of the Illela border as we await the last order,” Muhammad said.

He therefore charged Illela border community, marketers and other stakeholders to adhere to stipulated regulations as ECOWAS lift sanctions against Niger Republic.

The Customs boss said his inspection visit was to assess the situation and interact with officials of sister agencies, marketers and residents.

He solicited for more cooperation from the stakeholders and urged them to ensure harmonious working relationship at all times.

”My visit to Illela border station is to ensure that all is set in anticipation of the last order of the border re-opening.

“With collaboration, each agency will be able to effectively and efficiently fulfill its assigned mandate,” he said.

He disclosed that Customs had awarded a contract for the construction of a Primary Healthcare Center (PHC), at Illela border as part of its corporate social responsibility to the community

The Customs boss appreciated the licensed agents, traditional rulers and community members and encouraged them to support NCS with information to enable them serve the nation better.

He used the medium to sensitise the community to dangers of smuggling which, he said, was hindering economic growth.

Muhammad stressed the need for stakeholders to support NCS to achieve its constitutional mandate.

Responding on behalf of the border community, a traditional ruler, Alhaji Muhammadu, thanked the comptroller for the visit and assured him of maximum support to NCS and other sister agencies at the border.

PoliticsN30 Trillion Was Printed, Shared Under Buhari’ – Northern Governor Reveals by amoreobansu(op): 8:00am On Mar 05, 2024
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has blamed the current economic hardship being faced by Nigerians on the last administration led by Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor alleged that Buhari supervised the printing and sharing of about N30 trillion.

Mutfwang stated this during the swearing-in of 22 Special Advisers and heads of government agencies at the Government House in Jos on Monday.

Mutfwang said Buhari left the country’s economy in terrible shape for his successor, President Tinubu.

“We are at a very difficult juncture in the history of this country and I’m an advocate that after the election you forget politics and face governance,” Mutfwang said.

“And even though the Federal Government is being led by a party other than my own, I owe you the duty to tell Nigerians the truth that this government inherited a worse situation than 1999.

“This government inherited an economy where we simply printed money up to the tune of N30tn and shared.

“This government inherited an economy where the crude oil we’re yet to take out of the ground had been sold in advance.

“So, when you’re talking about the fall of the naira, it’s not rocket science. We sold our future under the last administration.

“No wonder you’re hearing of riots today, people intercepting food on the way. We are lucky on the plateau that perhaps we have more food than many other states.

“And I pray that the time will not come on the Plateau that we will see this kind of riot for food, but it means we must roll up our sleeves and get to work.

“And that is why, for us as a government, when we announced one of the positions that talked about food security, people were laughing but it is a serious issue.”

The governor announced plans by his administration to set up a special agro-processing zone in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in partnership with the African Development Bank to the tune of $300 million.

He called on the new appointees to brace up for the challenge to enable his administration to reverse the ugly situation for the good of the people.

“And to tell you that some of the appointees, I don’t know them, but because we want to get things done, we’re looking for the right people,” he said.

Crime70 Percent Of Financial Crimes In Nigeria Connected To Banks - EFCC by amoreobansu(op): 7:49am On Mar 05, 2024
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has revealed that approximately 70 percent of financial crimes in Nigeria are connected to banks.

Chairman of the leading anti-graft agency, Ola Olukoyede, shared this information during his address in Abuja at the 2023 Annual Retreat and General Meeting of the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria.

The EFCC boss pointed out that the banking industry was becoming more characterized by fraudulent activities, posing significant challenges and concerns for the commission.

Olukoyede, represented by EFCC’s Director of Internal Audit, Idowu Apejoye, emphasized the importance of collaborative actions from relevant authorities and industry professionals, particularly audit executives, to proactively address and combat fraudulent activities within the sector.

“Broadly speaking, banking fraud in Nigeria is both inside and outside related. The inside related fraud comprises outright selling of customers’ deposits, authorising loan facilities, forgery and several other kinds of unhealthy and criminal practices,” he said.

“The outsider related ones include hacking, ATM fraud, conspiracy, among others. And then the absurd one is when both collaborate, that is collaboration among the bankers and the outsider.

“That one is the one that is really absurd because when you do that, that means you are selling out the system. It is estimated that about 70 per cent of financial crimes in Nigeria are traceable to the banking sector, this scenario is disturbing and unacceptable,” he added.

PoliticsApproach Zimbabwe For Solution To Inflation, Obasanjo Tells FG by amoreobansu(op): 7:41am On Mar 05, 2024
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, advised that Nigeria should approach the government of Zimbabwe for a solution to the current all-time high inflation in the country.

He noted that since Zimbabwe was recently confronted with the same problem and came out of it, the southern African country would have useful advice for Nigeria.

In its latest release, the National Bureau of Statistics put Nigeria’s inflation at 29.9 per-cent.

The country is currently grappling with high cost of living, with pockets of protests breaking out across the country as Nigerians contend with increasing prices of foodstuffs.

Obasanjo, speaking on Monday at a youth leadership symposium as part of activities lined up for his 87th birthday, said Nigeria had Zimbabwe to learn from.

The symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of the Youths in Conflict Prevention in Africa” held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

It was put together by the Centre for Human Security and Dialogue in collaboration with the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The ex-President said the times of challenges were not to give up but to face the problem head-on and draw lessons from those who encountered similar problems in the past and overcame.

He said, “When the time is rough and tough, the tough must get going..no problem is new and no problem will be permanent. Committing suicide is not the end of any problem, confront it and take it to God because he could do anything. When you have a problem look at those who have had this problem before and how they overcame it

“We have this problem of galloping inflation in the country now but do we have a country with such problems recently? Yes we do, Zimbabwe had this problem recently. Shouldn’t we ask them how they did it even if our approach will be different? Even if whatever we shall be doing will be different but we can ask questions to navigate our way out.”

Obasanjo also posited that dialogue, not guns or any form of violence, would help resolve the various conflicts on the African continent.

He said that like never before, conscious efforts to build and inculcate a culture of peace and security in the youth must be intensified to spur them to be at the vanguard of promoting peace rather than being used to perpetrate violence on the continent.

He said, “We must begin to bring up our youths in the culture of peace and security. The chances are where we have a culture of love, we will have peace. The first thing to do is to inculcate in the youths the ingredients of peace which is love and fellowship.

“Look at the attributes that God gave us to have a life of stability, life of peace, they are as I mentioned, kindness, mercy and forgiveness. All of these attributes are professed by God and He shared same with us to make life pleasant for us. But when we build negative attitudes, pull him down, then there will be a problem.”

He referenced biblical characters Esther, “who was able to secure her race from being exterminated,” and Joseph, “who helped to fight famine.”

“The youth must be at the vanguard of pursuing peace. They must be able to persuade those who believe that gun and violence is the way out of conflicts to have a rethink. The way out is conversation and dialogue.

“We have had our issues here during the civil war. We killed ourselves mercilessly and destroyed our best facilities but we still came back to the roundtable to get the challenge resolved.

“Youths must develop the culture of peace, the culture of humaneness, the culture of living the way God wants us to live,” Obasanjo added.

The coordinator of the programme and former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Peter Okebukola, said the essence of the symposium was to further drive home Obasanjo’s commitment to the African youths.

Okebukola, who is the Director of the Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, said, “This event is a testament to the belief that it is not enough to grant young people a seat at the table; their involvement must be vital and meaningful.

“Through targeted interventions, inclusive policies, and international collaboration, we aim to empower West African youths as catalysts for positive change, paving the way for a more peaceful and harmonious society.”

Investment“Rice And Beans LTD”, Unusual Names Dominate Nigeria’s Bureau De Change Market by amoreobansu(op): 5:02pm On Feb 29, 2024
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has recently updated the number of Bureau De Changes (BDCs) operating in the country, confirming 5,687 operating licences.

The CBN website has a list of BDCs in a publication titled, ‘Approved BDCs’, seen on the CBN website.

From less than 100 operators in 2006, the sector has increased to over 5,600 BDCs as of today, fueled by the country’s rising demand for foreign exchange.

While the total number of BDCs has grown considerably, their geographical distribution remains uneven. Analysis reveals that Lagos State accounts for over half (52%) of all BDCs in the country, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) with 21% and Kano State with 17%.

However, along with this growth comes a peculiar trend – a growing number of BDCs sporting unconventional names like “CCTV BDC LTD,” “Chelsea BDC LTD,” and even “Rice and Beans BDC LTD.”

The following are the top unusual names approved by CBN in Nigeria’s booming Bureau de Change market.

They include; CCTV BDC LTD, Chelsea BDC LTD, Couple BDC LTD, Cream BDC LTD, Cruising BDC LTD, Day-by-day BDC LTD, Deadlist BDC LTD, Decorum BDC LTD, Deep Freezer BDC LTD, Divine Focus BDC LTD, Ephesians-three-twenty BDC LTD, Four to five BDC LTD, Fourteen February BDC LTD and Fullmoon BDC LTD

Others are Go-well BDC LTD, Gucci BDC LTD, Happy Ends LTD, His Grace BDC LTD, Home Alone BDC LTD, Honeymoon BDC LTD, Hourglass BDC LTD, In-to-in BDC LTD, JJC BDC LTD, Looking and Seeing BDC LTD, Lovers BDC LTD, Pros and Cons BDC LTD

Names like Rice and Beans BDC LTD, Select and Pay BDC LTD, Set up BDC LTD, SIX Six Six BDC LTD, Slow Down BDC LTD, You and Me BDC LTD, Young Free & Single BDC LTD, Zero to Ten BDC LTD, 10-20 Times BDC LTD are also not left out.

This comic-like names has sparked curiosity and amusement, with many wondering about the motivations behind the choice of names for a corporate entity.

Some speculate that they were coined from a marketing strategy to stand out in a crowded market, while others believe it reflects the diverse personalities of the BDC owners.

CrimeArmy Uncovers 40 Wells Where Oil Thieves ‘Fetch’ Crude Oil by amoreobansu(op): 1:02pm On Feb 29, 2024
He further said some suspects arrested at the scene were still in the custody of the army as investigation continues.

“Few people have been arrested, they are in our custody, we hope they will give us useful information that would lead to the arrest of others that are involved in this act.”

Answering questions from newsmen, one of the suspects confessed to the crime, saying the wells belonged to different families in the community.

He revealed that sometimes diggers die in the process of digging the wells when they inhale the smell of the gas, saying they were usually paid about N40, 000 to excavate a well of about 15 feet.

The suspects, whose name was not revealed as of the time of filing this report, stated, “It is owned by the community and not by one person.

“To get oil, sometimes if the place is like here, we dig like 10 to 15 feet. When we dig it and notice that the gas is rising, if you do not run out on time people might suffocate and we bring them out half-dead, but the unlucky ones die.

“When we bring them out, we pour water on them and give them coke. After the gas the oil will come out and another set will come to fetch it after we have finished digging it.”

BusinessNigeria: Exclusive - Inside Details of How Nigerian Govt Detained Binance Execut by amoreobansu(op): 8:11am On Feb 29, 2024
One of the two detained Binance executives is an American, while the other is British-Pakistani.

The Nigerian government has detained two executives of the Binance crypto exchange platform amid efforts to stabilise the nation's foreign exchange market and salvage the value of the local currency.

Sources familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES that the two executives were detained in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, a day after they flew into the country as part of moves to negotiate with the Nigerian authorities amid a crackdown on the crypto platform.

Last week, PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Nigerian government blocked the online platforms of Binance and other crypto firms to halt what it described as continuous manipulation of the forex market and illicit movement of funds.

Sources within the major telecommunication companies in the country told PREMIUM TIMES last week that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) communicated the directive to telcos, and they immediately acted on the advisory.

Apart from Binance, other platforms such as Forextime, OctaFX, Crypto, FXTM, Coinbase, Kraken, among others, were equally blocked.

Presidency and regulatory sources said the government decided to move against Binance and other crypto firms following reports that currency speculators and money launderers were using them to execute criminal activities. Authorities believe the 'criminal activities' going on the platforms are contributing significantly to the weakening of the naira.

Binance, a digital assets platform, serves as a window for peer-to-peer transactions, allowing users to advertise interest to sell or buy currencies of their choice.

In September 2023, Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) disclaimed Binance Nigeria Limited, saying the platform was "neither registered nor regulated by the Commission and its operations in Nigeria are therefore illegal".

Despite the warning by the regulatory agency, the firm continued its operation, attracting huge patronage especially among urban youths and suspected speculators and money launderers. Aside from suspicions of economic sabotage, officials also speak of national security concerns as the platforms are often patronised by other criminal groups, including for payments of ransom.

In its reaction last week, Binance said "users behaving in a manipulative way" would be removed from its platform.

"As industry leaders, we are working hand in hand with local authorities, lawmakers, and regulators to ensure we act on non-compliance," the platform added, noting that it is "setting an upper limit for ads, filtering and removing bad ads, requiring and raising deposits for merchants posting ads as well as processes for actioning against any market manipulators."

The Binance Detention

Sources with details of the matter told this newspaper earlier in the week that the two executives of the online platform arrived in Nigeria on Sunday to negotiate with the government amid the crackdown.

On Monday afternoon, the executives met with top cyber security officials and other investigators from the office of the National Security Adviser to discuss the various areas of contention.

However, the meetings were deadlocked as Binance officials declined to meet some of the demands put forward by the Nigerian government.

They were also accused of operating a business worth billions without the requisite registrations and documentation.

According to sources who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES Wednesday evening, the Nigerian authorities requested Binance executives to provide data relating to transactions involving the Nigerian Naira on the Binance platform in the last seven years. They also demanded that some other data relating to Nigeria be deleted from the Binance platform.

However, the Binance executives insisted that they should be taken to their respective countries' embassies before they could comply.

While the full identities of the two Binance executives remain sketchy as of press time Wednesday night, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that one of them is an American and the other a British-Pakistani.

The Nigerian government also obtained a court warrant to detain the officials for at least twelve days in the first instance.

A source with knowledge of the matter told PREMIUM TIMES that the investigation was consequently taken over by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while the two executives were detained at a guest house near the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The EFCC did not immediately respond to PREMIUM TIMES' enquiries seeking clarity about the issue Wednesday night. Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson of the commission, told this newspaper to call back later.

Meanwhile, indications emerged Wednesday that Binance disabled its peer-to-peer function for Nigerian users on its platform.

More popularly known as P2P, the platform allows users, buyers and sellers to trade without third-party interference and became popular among Nigerians when the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari banned cryptocurrency in 2021.

With the disabling of the P2P platform for Nigerian users, it remains unclear whether Nigerians would still be able to trade on the Binance platform.

Binance officials did not immediately respond to enquiries on the matter Wednesday as emails sent to their communication unit were not responded to.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Central Bank of Nigeria claimed that the sum of $26 billion flowed through Binance Nigeria over the past year from "unidentified sources".

"In the case of Binance, in the last one year alone, $26 billion has passed through Binance Nigeria from sources and users who we cannot adequately identify," Olayemi Cardoso, the CBN governor, said.

The apex bank governor also hinted that there is a collaboration among government agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Police, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to address such illicit financial activities.

CrimeGroup Writes Tinubu, DSS, Invites EFCC To Probe Missing N20bn Benue LGs Funds by amoreobansu(op): 7:44pm On Feb 27, 2024
A pro-democracy, anti-corruption and justice sector civil society organisation, Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN), has written a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest, interrogate and prosecute the Special Adviser to Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dennis Akura, and others for alleged diversion of local government funds.

The petition, which was written on February 20, 2024, was received and acknowledged Tuesday at the headquarters of the the anti-graft agency in Abuja.

In the petition also sent to President Bola Tinubu, the Director-General, Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, GICN, a group made up of lawyers, private investigators, human rights activists, media professionals and policy analysts, accused Akura and others of supervising alleged brazen embezzlement and diversion of over N20 billion being part of aggregate Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds which accrued to the 23 local government councils in Benue State between June to November 2023.

It said the LG Bureau under Governor Alia has been using some of its staff and privately owned companies to syphon the funds meant for local governments in the state.

GICN further stated that it had been inundated with complaints and documents from whistleblowers showing that the office of the Special Adviser to Governor Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has allegedly become a conduit pipe for high level corrupt practices, massive fraud and other sundry offences which prompted its petition to the anti-graft commission.

“From the records attached as APPENDIX 2A and 2B, the aggregate FAAC allocation received in the State Joint Local Government Account (SJLGA), maintained pursuant to Section 162(6) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) for onward disbursement to the 23 Local Government Councils within the period under review totals N55,897,592,592.81 only.

“Out of the above sum, only N35,849,988,725.37 was disbursed to the 23 Local Government Councils. This left a balance of N20,051,603,867.44, which remains undisbursed, even though the SJLGA is supposed to be a transit account and not a savings account. It happened that Dr. Dennis Akura under the strict directives of Governor Alia, allegedly diverted the aforesaid N35,849,988,725.37 using staff of the Bureau as well as some companies they have registered mainly for that purpose…” the group stated.

The group urged EFCC to ensure that Akura and the others fingered in the petition are brought to justice.

“The EFCC should not allow any of the persons mentioned in this petition to benefit from their own wrongdoing, if fiscal accountability and transparency must be restored in Benue State. We have absolute belief that the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR has zero tolerance for any form of corruption capable of inflicting hardship on the masses and sabotaging the economy of Nigeria as a whole,” it stressed.

In the 17-paragraph petition, the group also attached documentary evidences of how funds were transferred from various local government council accounts to the account of individual staff of the Bureau and companies, which the lawyers investigated and annexed the full details of owners of each company, with documents from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

GICN urged the anti-corruption commission to ensure that if found culpable, the Benue State officials are made to refund the loot, to serve as deterrent to others.

“We hereby pray, pursuant to our statutory obligations to expose corrupt practices under Section 24(d) and (e) of the 1999 Constitution (supra) and the Whistle Blowing Policy of the Federal Government of Nigeria, 2016, that you urgently ARREST, INTERROGATE and PROSECUTE the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Iornem Alia on Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Dennis Akura, together with all his cronies for the serious offences they have (allegedly) committed,” the petition read in part.

TravelJapa: Nigerians Flood Foreign Embassies As Economic Hardship Bites Harder by amoreobansu(op): 7:54am On Feb 20, 2024
The harsh economic conditions in Nigeria, exacerbated by policies implemented under President Bola Tinubu, have driven a surge in the number of Nigerians desperately seeking to leave the country.

The phenomenon, known locally as ‘Japa’, reflects the frustration of the youth amid economic hardship, inflation, and insecurity.

The desperation to escape the economic challenges has significantly increased visa applications at foreign embassies, particularly in Europe and North America.

The trend is attributed to the unprecedented rate at which people have been leaving Nigeria in the last seven years, as hunger, insecurity, and poor purchasing power grip the nation.

President Tinubu’s policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Nigerian currency, have contributed to rapid inflation, impacting citizens’ daily lives.

The consequences of these policies have driven thousands of Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad, with Canada being a preferred destination due to perceived less stringent conditions and the country’s focus on attracting skilled immigrants.

A notable increase in emigration has been observed in the last seven months of the Tinubu administration, with reports of Nigerians relocating to countries such as Canada, the UK, Belgium, Turkey, and even more obscure destinations like Cambodia in Asia.

The deteriorating economic situation and concerns about the future have fueled the desire among the youth to leave the country.

Nigerians expressing their frustrations highlight the lack of hope in the current situation, citing joblessness, high costs of living, inflation, and growing insecurity.

Protests have erupted in various parts of the country, with organized labour threatening strikes over the economic downturn.

President Tinubu’s decision to remove subsidies on petroleum products, leading to a nearly 300 per cent increase in fuel prices, has contributed to the worsening economic conditions, prompting a wave of discontent and encouraging many to seek refuge in other countries.

The impact on the streets of Nigeria, marked by insecurity, kidnapping, and terrorism, has further intensified the desire among citizens to find better prospects abroad.

PoliticsHardship: Widow Collapses Due To Hunger In Ibadan Market [VIDEO] by amoreobansu(op): 8:11am On Feb 17, 2024
An unidentified widow recently collapsed due to hunger while walking with her three children in a market in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The distressing scene was captured in a viral video shared on social media on Friday.

The video shows the widow, weakened and lying on the bare floor by the roadside, surrounded by sympathizers.

According to traders in the video, the widow, who came from Amuloko in Ibadan with her three children, fainted with one of the children on her back at Oja Oba Iso Ololubo. The purpose of their journey was to buy a bag of sachet water on credit.

Traders and passersby, moved by the dire situation, began donating money for the widow in a small black plastic bucket, and her youngest child was given pap.

The widow, too weak to speak, had reportedly not eaten for four days, as per her account.

The eldest child of the widow, a girl, explained in Yoruba, “We’ve not eaten for four days.

“My mother said all of us should come to carry water and sell it so that we can find money to eat. We were walking from home, and she fell down here.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress has declared a two-day nationwide strike from February 27 to 28, 2024, in response to the prevailing economic challenges across the country.

PoliticsTinubu’s Abrupt Subsidy Removal Caused Hardship – Sagay by amoreobansu(op): 11:51pm On Feb 09, 2024
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Professor Itse Sagay, has criticized the recent removal of petrol subsidies by President Bola Tinubu, calling it a hasty decision that has caused untold hardship for citizens.

In an interview on Channels TV, Sagay argued that the government should have waited for the commencement of domestic oil production before taking this step.

The renowned legal scholar and Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), pointed to the Dangote refinery and the Port Harcourt refinery as examples of projects that could have eased the transition away from subsidies.

He said, “Petrol is critical to our lives. The cost of living is going up, and basic living is now expensive. I think we might have gone on for another six months and as internal production was coming up, then the subsidy can be removed.

“The immediacy and the sudden manner of the decision to remove petrol subsidy has created an immediate level of hardship which is almost becoming unbearable.

“I am not in full agreement with the way and order some of the things are being done now. On the issue of petrol, I would have been happier if the government had been patient to allow internal production to commence before removing the subsidy.

“Now, Dangote is now producing. And of course, the refinery in Port Harcourt is almost ready. Perhaps, if we had waited a little longer, the transition will not have been harsh. We are in it already but I think we are in competent hands and we will get out of it.

“We’ve been on this subsidy for decades and a few more months would not have killed us. You can see the difference in lifestyle now.”

Sagay also said there must be a stop to the “deterioration of the value of the naira”.

He said, “I never dreamt that there would be a time when the dollar would change for over N1,000 to a dollar. It has to stop, otherwise, it will destroy everything that the government is trying to do.”

He however expressed confidence in the new government and its ability to provide quality leadership for the Nigerian people.

PoliticsBetta Edu: Inside APC Women Leaders’ Letter To Tinubu by amoreobansu(op): 9:46pm On Jan 08, 2024
Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the aegis of ‘Elected Female National APC Officers and Zonal Women Leaders’ have passed a ‘vote of no confidence’ in Dr Betta Edu.

Edu, who is the party’s national women leader, is accused of allegedly abusing her office.

A petition written to President Bola Tinubu on Friday reads “Without deviating from the essence of this subject, it is pertinent we express our total displeasure and concern over the misrepresentation and self-aggrandisement of the National Woman leader, Dr. Beta Edu during her visit to the Presidential Villa on the 13th of July 2023.

“We wish to state categorically and in strong terms that her visit to the Presidential Villa was a misrepresentation as she in no way represent the elected National Women Officials and Zonal Women Leaders of the party as against the news making the rounds.

“We were totally unaware of her presidential visit and no due information nor notification were given to us the women she claimed to represent during her visit. It is disheartening that Dr. Beta Edu could label her visit to Mr President to be the representation of National Stakeholders and Zonal Women leaders, even without them knowing and not in attendance during the visit.

“It is worrisome that at this infancy stage of the administration of President Bola Tinubu which needs all hands to be on deck that the women leadership of the party is already experiencing division and seclusion in representation which has been the pattern of the National Woman Leader Beta Edu since her emergence. It is in strong terms that we reject her leadership because she has failed in managing the affairs of the women in the party.”

A copy of the letter was also sent to National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu; National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, all APC governor’s wives and zonal Vice-chairmen of the party.

It was signed by nine women leaders from the six geopolitical zones which includes APC Deputy National Treasurer, Omorede Osifo; National Ex-Officio (South-West), Olubunmi Oriniowo; National Ex-Officio (North-Central), Oluwatoyin Opawoye; Zonal Women leader (North Central), Princess Zahra Audu; Zonal Women leader (South-West), Mrs Yetunde Adesanya and Zonal Women leader (South-East), Mimi Diyiokeh.

Others were the Zonal Women leader (North East), Zainab Alman; Zonal Women leader (South-South), Mrs. Cynthia Princewill; Zonal Women leader (North-West), Hajia Hadiza Shagari.

“Throughout the electioneering campaign, Dr. Betta Edu worked in isolation without synergy with her colleagues’ National Women officials of the party and the Zonal Women leaders. We individually devised means and strategies to galvanise and mobilise support for the party in our various states and traveled to almost all states campaigning with Mr. President with our personal funds and resources because we are highly committed to the Renewed Hope project and which we are glad to be part of the success story of today.

“We want Mr. President to know that most women paraded by Dr. Betta Edu were mostly fake. Authentic and democratically elected national officers who are even National Executive Council Members, all Zonal women leaders, the three women senators and fifteen female House of Representatives members, and a host of other relevant women leaders and stakeholders were replaced by fake women in the visit to the President.

“We hereby reject the leadership of Dr. Betta Edu and unanimously pass a vote of no confidence on her and whatever she represents. We appeal to Mr. President to use his good office to grant audience to the Elected National Female Executives and Zonal Women Leaders of our great party for inclusiveness,” the letter stated.

Politics“We Will Know Who Is In Charge Soon” – Wike Blows Hot, Visits APC Chairman by amoreobansu(op): 9:58pm On Jan 06, 2024
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said Rivers State People will know who is in charge of the state soon.

This comes amidst the face-off between the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara and Wike.

In a meeting that took place at the home of the south-south Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Victor Giadom, on Saturday, Wike said the visit was personal and non-political.

However, the meeting has fueled speculation about his potential defection to the APC, especially given his apparent task of supporting President Bola Tinubu in the state.

Wike, who spoke on the purpose of the visit, said, “I didn’t come here for politics. I came here to visit my friend, Giadom. Let nobody misinterprets why I came here. That is why I came with PDP and APC leaders. It is a private visit to my friend.”

Wike said Giadom only gathered his people to show he was still politically relevant, noting that politics was about impacting the people.

Addressing Giadom, he said: “I have never been in doubt about your capacity to relate with your people. Politics is about impact. If you want to be a successful politician you must impact on your people so that when you call them they will answer you.”

However, he said: “Forget about these hungry noisemakers on the road. When the time comes, we will know who is in charge and who is not in charge. There is a time for everything.

“This is not time for politics. When the time comes, we will know who is who. If you like abuse me as you want . If you like employ everybody on social media. I have never bothered myself one day to know who is abusing me. Politics will come. We didn’t contest election based on social media. We spoke to the people, they listened and believed in us”.

Speaking on his realignment with Giadom, he said: “Party will come and go and friendship will remain. We have made our mistakes, we are all humans but friendship remains.

“When I was appointed a Minister, Victor Giadom led a team to congratulate me. It does not matter where you belong to what is important is the interest of Rivers. If you want to be a successful politician, greedy ones will not like you. Nobody has done well in politics without enemies. Those who hate you are in the minority. Those who love you are in the majority”.

Wike added: “When I was governor, Nigeria heard about Rivers State. That is what I have always preached. So, nobody should be afraid. I have no regrets when I stood by with my colleagues and friends that the presidency must go to the south.

“There was nothing I was not offered. But I said no. That is why I will continue to support the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. As I am going back home, I am going with the satisfaction that my friend is back.

“This visit I came today will cause a lot of trouble. Some people will start visits now. Follow who knows road. Continue to support Victor and all your leaders who mean well for all of you.

“For the first time in the history, Ogoni man is the chairman of works. I am happy that Ledum Mitee is a member of the NNPCL. Let nobody do community problems. When you do that development will not come.”

Earlier, Giadom referred to Wike’s visit as homecoming of a brother, a friend and a leader. He assured him of their support.

Giadom said: “Today is homecoming of a brother, a friend and a leader. I stand here on this ground to let you know that we have lived well, paid our dues and contributed to the development of this place.

“Be rest assured that we will support the team you will lead in Rivers to provide support for our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the main reason we are all here today. This place nobody can challenge any visitor on this soil. We are in firm control of this place.”

In attendance in the event was serving senators, House of Representatives members from Rivers, APC and PDP leaders, and two former PDP chairmen in Rivers, Felix Obuah and Amb. Desmond Akawor, PDP’s South-south Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, former PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, and various local dignitaries including traditional rulers, local government chairpersons, and youth and women’s groups.

PoliticsAnger As Tinubu’s Minister Asks Accountant-general To Transfer N585m To Private by amoreobansu(op): 6:21am On Jan 06, 2024
One of the ministers in President Bola Tinubu-led administration, Betta Edu, has asked Oluwatoyin Madein, the accountant-general of the federation, to transfer N585 million to the bank account of an individual, sparking anger in several quarters.

The instruction for the payment is contained in a leaked letter dated December 20, 2023.

The letter, signed by the humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation minister, was titled: “Mandate for Payment of Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos and Ogun States Respectively”.

In the letter, Edu instructed the accountant-general to transfer N585,189,500 to the UBA account of one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.

According to the document, N219,429,750 was earmarked as “2023 Grant for Vulnerable Groups in Akwa Ibom state”, N73,828,750 was budgeted for Cross River state, N219,462,250 for Lagos state, and N72,468,750 for Ogun state.

The minister said the payment should be deducted from the account of the national investment office.

“I hereby approve the payment of the cumulative sum of N585,189,500. These are payments for programmes and activities of the Renewed Hope grant for Vulnerable Groups,” the letter reads.

“This payment should be made from the National Social Investment Office account with account number: 0020208461037 to the project accountant’s details listed above.”

The letter has elicited varied reactions on the social media as many Nigerians questioned the rationale behind the minister’s instruction of transferring the funds to a private bank account.

‘FRAUDULENT INTENTION’

The public sector financial regulations of 2009 prohibits the payment of public funds to the account of a private individual.

Section 713 of the law states that: “Personal money shall in no circumstances be paid into a government bank account, nor shall any public money be paid into a private bank account. An officer who pays public money into a private account is deemed to have done so with fraudulent intention.”

‘N585m FUND FOLLOWED DUE PROCESS’

In a statement on Friday, Rasheed Zubair, media adviser to the minister, said the N585 million fund for vulnerable groups followed “due process”.

Zubair said Bridget, whose bank account was stated to receive the payment, is the project accountant for grants for vulnerable groups scheme.

The media adviser said it is “legal in civil service” for a project accountant to receive payments, use funds legally and retire all receipts as evidence of the project.

He added that the circulation of the document on social media is another attempt to blackmail the minister.

“It is glaring that the same sponsored disgruntled elements in the past few days have been trying to smear the Honourable Minister, Dr Betta Edu, and stain her integrity because she alerted the Federal Government attention to the ongoing N44.8 Billion Fraud in NSIPA,” the statement reads.

“These elements have been trying to link her to a phantom fraud and are behind this latest misadventure.

“However, this latest vile effort of theirs is another infantile blackmail doomed for evisceration. For the avoidance, the said N585,198,500.00 was approved, and it is meant for the implementation of grants to vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states.”
