BusinessSpeculators Get Burnt As Naira Gains Value by amsad19(op): 6:48am On Feb 29, 2016
There are strong indications that the efforts of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stabilise the naira may have started yielding the expected results.

A CBN official last week noted that the deployment of a number measures by the bank may have turned the tide in the foreign exchange (FOREX) market and led to the severe punishment suffered by currency hoarders and speculators.

The CBN had earlier insisted that speculators were behind the market bubble since the upper week which dealt negatively on the naira, sending it down to an all-time low of almost N400 to the dollar.

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, had accused speculators who connived with bureau de change operators to undermine the efforts of the bank of propping up the naira and warned that such speculators would eventually be punished by the market. Last week, it became apparent that the recent depreciation of the naira was not as a result of genuine demand but the insatiable urge of speculators, many of whom had got burnt in the sharp appreciation of the naira.

The value of the naira which started the week at N367 rose to N350 by Tuesday and N305 by Wednesday. There had been a wide gap between the selling price and the buying price on Wednesday. Money changers bought from customers at N270 per dollar but sold at average of N305 per dollar.

A bureau de change operator explained that the wide gap between the buying rate and selling rate was due to the attempt by operators to minimise their loss.

He said, “People had bought when the rate was N370, and they are already making losses. But by combining dollars bought at N270, the average buying rate becomes N320. So at N305, they are still losing about N15 per dollar.”

Although it rose again to N350 to the dollar at the close of business activities on Thursday, the naira closed the week stronger at N315 to the dollar.

Counting their losses, a good number of the sellers who had suffered huge losses confessed that they had bought at the rate of N380, hoping to sell at N400 before the sudden turn in fortunes.

Industry analysts say that a number measures taken by the apex bank lately may have led to this improvement. One is the decision to publish all FOREX sales from the inter-bank market to make for unprecedented transparency. The second is said to be the mop-up operations of the CBN which had reduced the excess liquidity behind the high speculation of the upper week. This step is said to have made the naira ‘relatively scarce.’

There was also the decision by the CBN to maintain the supply of FOREX for school fees and medicals which earlier speculated the removal from interbank FOREX eligibility had caused panic. Another reason being adduced by market watchers has to do with the rising cost and drop in demand for imported goods because a good number of Nigerians are beginning to switch consumption to local goods. This is also said to have led to a significant fall in dollar demand. Likewise, the unchanging stand of the federal government against devaluation, despite pressures from many quarters, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), also had its own impact on the fortunes of the naira.

According to a source within the apex bank, “The aim of the CBN is to ensure that the divergence between the official and parallel rate does not exceed N3, so we are looking at a parallel market rate of N200 to the dollar because the downward trend in the pressure on the naira will be sustained. The CBN has the capacity to sustain the downward pressure and will deploy further currency management initiatives while capitalising on fiscal policies of the federal government to remain in support of non-devaluation of the naira. The current stand of the federal government on Nigeria’s legal tender is non-devaluation. It will be unwise for anybody to be hoarding dollars because we can assure you that the naira appreciation is going to trend upwards going forward.”

So far, the CBN in a bid to manage the pressure on supply has deployed over $11.7 billion to support the agricultural sector, SMEs, manufacturers, and others. This has reduced the patronage of black market by end-users and has forced rent seekers to dump the greenback, thereby creating a dollar-glut in the black-market.

It has been observed that most of the imports that were draining FOREX resources have since found local substitutes with attendant savings in FOREX and shortage of demand for the greenback, which was fuelling the pressure. This is also coming on the heels of the CBN’s instruction to commercial banks to publish the allocation of FOREX to end-users. This has in recent times ensured that the real sector of the economy and genuine users of the greenback for education and medicals have been able to access FOREX at the official rate.

Industry analysts have also described the development as a game changer for a majority of local manufacturers in Nigeria. The manufacturers acknowledged that the impact of the CBN policy on FOREX since, its inception, has more than doubled their productive capacity with attendant benefits in terms of expansion to meet increasingly higher demands for their products and services.

The analysts said, “Conveniently, since the CBN foreign exchange policy came into existence, production capacity by local manufacturers has increased from 50 per cent to 70 per cent. This has impacted on their propensity to increase exports with higher volumes which is expected to also earn Nigeria commensurate higher foreign exchange earnings.”

Speaking further, the analysts are of the opinion that the policy has helped the local manufacturers to realise the urgent need to expand because of increasing demands for their products. With global oil prices rising gradually and an upward trending external reserves, the naira is expected to regain its lost value. In the past one week, the external reserves of the country has so far improved from $27.789 billion to $27.807 billion, an $18 million improvement. Also crude oil prices at the international market is priced around $32.89 according to data made available by the CBN.

PoliticsIPOB Threatens Showdown Over Allegations That Kanu Is Starved In Prison by amsad19(op): 8:53am On Feb 16, 2016
Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB),
yesterday, threatened that if anything
happens to its detained leader and Director
of Radio Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu following
allegations that he was being denied access
to food and toiletries and had been
subjected to serious intimidation and
harassment by some prison officials in Kuje
Prison, that the action, if true, would
attract a protest never heard of in Nigeria
before.
Addressing newsmen in Nnewi, Anambra
state, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Officer,
Mr Emma Powerful, claimed that the
inhuman treatment being meted to Kanu
was meant to demoralise him “as directed
by the Federal Government’s agents, who
are now convinced that he will be set free
by the court at the end of the day and
they now resorted to denying him access
to food in order to starve him to death.”
Similarly, Ogirishi Igbo, Igbo spiritual
leader, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka has
appealed to the federal government to,
unconditionally release Mr Kanu without
further delay, so that Igbo elders could
talk with him on his group’s agitation for
Biafra. He added that the agitation for
Biafra would be more pronounced, if
anything happened to him in prison.

PoliticsBudget Mess: Buhari Fires DG by amsad19(op): 8:42am On Feb 16, 2016
•Sacks Orhii, Sola Omole, Odumodu, 23
others

•Appoints Akabueze, Dabiri-Erewa aides

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye & Magnus
Eze, Abuja

In what seemed a fall-out of the budget
mess, President Muhammadu Buhari
yesterday appointed Mr. Tijjani Mohammed
Abdullahi as the new Director-General
(Budget). He replaced Mr. Yahaya Gusau
This is even as the President hit the civil
service yesterday with the immediate sack
of 26 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of
parastatals and agencies. These include
those of National Agency for Food, Drugs
Administration and Control (NAFDAC),
Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON and
Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Dr.
Paul Orhii, Dr Joseph Odumodu and Mr Sola
Omole respectively.
A statement announcing Abdullahi’s
appointment said he is a banker of repute
with experience in managing public finance.
“The new Director-General (Budget) is
expected to work with the Minister of
Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma
Udo Udoma to efficiently deliver on the
mandates of the Budget Office of the
Federation,” the statement by Femi
Adesina, the Special Adviser to the
President, (Media & Publicity), said.
It also said Buhari approved the
appointment of Mr. Ben Ifeanyi Akabueze
as the Special Adviser on Planning to the
Minister of Budget and National Planning.
Mr. Akabueze is the former past
Commissioner for Economic Planning and
Budget in Lagos State.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to
the Government of the Federation (SGF),
Babachir David Lawal, the President has
also approved that the most senior
officers in the parastatals, agencies and
councils should oversee the activities of
the organizations pending the appointment
of substantive CEO.
Others affected are CEOs of Bureau of
Public Procurement (BPP), Bureau of Public
Enterprises (BPE), Petroleum Technology
Development Fund (PTDF), New Partnership
for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Nigeria
Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF),
Nigerian Content Development and
Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Federal
Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN),
Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund),
National Information Technology
Development Agency (NITDA) and
Petroleum Equalization Fund.
Others are Nigeria Railways Corporation
(NRC), Petroleum Products Pricing
Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Nigeria
Investment Promotion Council (NIPC),
Bank of Industry (BoI), National Centre
for Women Development (NCWD),
Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Nigerian
Export-Import Bank and National Agency
for Prohibition of Traffic In Persons and
Other Related Matters (NAPTIP).
Lawal said Buhari however, thanked them
for their invaluable services to the nation
and wished them well in their future
endeavours.
Meanwhile in the Ministry of Information
and Culture, all the bosses in the six
parastatals got the boot. Their sack was
announced by the Minister, Alhaji Lai
Muhammad through a statement issued by
his Special Assistant, Mr Seguu Adeyemi.
The ministerº announced the
disengagement in a meeting with the CEOs
of the NTA Omole, Federal Radio
Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mallam
Ladan Salihu, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr.
Sam Worlu, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN),
Mr. Ima Niboro, Nigerian Broadcasting
Commission (NBC) Mr. Emeka Mba and the
National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr.
Mike Omeri.
Adeyemi said the minister directed the
affected bosses to hand over to the most
senior officials in their various
establishments.
He also thanked them for their service to
the nation and wished them the best of
luck in their future endeavours.
Daily Sun gathered that government
needed to retool and rejig its information
machinery in line with the change agenda
of the present administration.
Meanwhile, mixed reactions trailed their
disengagements across the parastatals in
Abuja yesterday.
At NAN, some staffers said the sack was
long overdue; they were jubilating.
But in the NBC, the recent travails of Mr.
Mba many of the workers had expected him
to drive the on-going digitalisation policy
to its logical end.
In another development, Buhari has
approved the appointment of a former
member of the House of Representatives,
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, as his Senior Special
Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora.
Though no official statement has been
made yet, she was in the Presidential Villa
yesterday to pick her appointment letter.

Science/TechnologyFollow These 5 Steps To Keep Yourself Safe From Hackers by amsad19(op): 9:27am On Feb 06, 2016
No matter how secure you think your devices are, someone could access your data if they put their mind to it. It's just the reality of the Information Age, but you should still do everything in your power to make yourself less of a target forhackers.
In an extensive piece for The Wall Street Journal this week, Geoffrey A. Fowler laid out a five-step checklist that shouldn't take more than an hour to complete, and might be the difference between having your data stolen or not.

Here are just a few of the most important steps you should take:

First, update everything. Start with the operating system, even if you've set your Mac or PC to install OS updates automatically. It never hurts to check. If you have an iPhone, you can make sure you're up to date in Settings > General >Software Updates. Android users should look for Settings > System Updates. And unless you have a great reason for it, make sure that your apps are being updated automatically on your smartphone as well.

The next step might be the most important: fix your passwords. The average person uses the same few passwords (if not just one password) for nearly every account they own. Download a password manager (I use 1Password), generate a complex password that won't be cracked in seconds and apply it to your Google, Facebook or Twitter account. Rinse and repeat.

It's also a good idea to turn on two-factor authentication, which requires you to supply additional information when you login. It can be a bit of a hassle, but it's far better than the alternative of having to reclaim a stolen account.

Finally, you can be doing a lot more to keep your Internet browsing private and secure by fixing a few things on your browser. Every so often, clear your browsing data and all of the saved passwords. If the option in your browser'sSettings menu isn't thorough enough, try CCleaner.

You can also activate Do Not Track, install an extension like Ghostery and, of course, disable Adobe Flash once and for all.

Follow all of these steps and read Fowler's full piece at WSJ, and you'll be well on your way to leading a safer, more secure life.

Ferebiekun:
Why make a mountain out of a molehill? The Latin alphabet that we and many other peoples of the world have adopted as their writing system is not the only orthography available to write a language. Many institutions of learning, from primary school to university, write their motto not only using the Latin alphabet but in Latin language. Meaning you, as a responsible and curious student, are expected to LEARN what the "mysterious inscription" means.

And if we're to unnecessarily complicate the issue we would argue that Latin as an ancient language is synonymous to Christianity. Should we then jump to the conclusion that any institution that uses Latin inscriptions for whatever purpose is religiously biased?

Moreover, the so-called Muslim or Arabic inscription is written using Ajami, one of the writing systems in the northern and eastern parts of Africa. It's not uncommon to have a single language codified using different writing systems. So, next time you want to label someone an illiterate, ask yourself how many writing systems can YOU READ. Writing down a language does not start and end at using the popular A B C.
his knwledge is only A B C, then why wld he argue on smthng dat he dsnt knw? To me, datx d defintn of illeteracy, The inscriptn on d NM logo is nt in ajmi itx one of the verses of the holy Qur'an which translates victory is from God alone...

Why is all this allegations against fulani alone? ur report is biased and full of hatred to the fulani's. A fulani only fights for revenge he cannot fight just like that. The case in Jos for instance is the people of jos that started by killing their wifes, children and cows.
When a fulani man wins the chairmanship election in 2007 in jos, how many hausa's and fulani's are killed just because one of their own won the election instead of the native jos people? Why didnt u include that in your write-up?
we all have problems and we just have to understand our difference b4 this will end. This will never end by just criticizing one tribe and the other we are 1 let us unite.
